The effect of superficial gas rate distribution (Jg profile) on down-the-bank metallurgical response was tested in the rougher-scavenger bank (eight 10-m3 tank cells, 4 roughers and 4 scavengers) at Highland Valley Copper Mine's Cu/Mo separation circuit. Three Jg profiles were tested: (a) as found (i.e., typical practice), (b) increasing decreasing (i.e., increasing from cell 1 to 4 and decreasing from cell 5 to 8), and (c) decreasing-increasing (i.e., decreasing from cell 1 to 4 and increasing from cell 5 to 8). The Jg profile approach proved to be of considerable value. Profile (b) gave the best metallurgical results, i.e., the highest down-the-bank grade/recovery (increase in grade at constant recovery was approx. 3-4% compared to the as found case) and the most efficient Cu/Mo separation (cumulative Cu recovery was reduced by almost half - approx. from 20% to 12%, at 99% Mo recovery). The success of the evaluation prompted the implementation of profile (b). Detailed gas dispersion characterization tests (Jg and Db (bubble size)) showed significant discrepancies between the Jg measured directly (using the McGill University sensor) and the Jg calculated from field instrument readings (volumetric gas flowmeter) and machine dimensions (cell cross-sectional area). Tests were designed to reveal the source of disagreement. It was observed that a significant number of bubbles were not able to float (i.e., they were entrained with the tailings), the evidence appearing to be a significant number of very small bubbles (approx. 200-300 µm) which did not have sufficient buoyancy to rise. Consequently, rather than relying on the field instrument, the evaluation depended on the McGill University Jg sensor, which collects bubbles in a tube near the pulp-froth interface, thus providing significance to the data as the measurements were obtained from bubbles that almost certainly floated.

"What is new in air compressors? A good deal - the designers have been keeping pace with technical developments in related fields and also contributing new techniques of their own. Plant reliability no longer requires bulky slow-speed machines. Even the reciprocating machines, which still provide the most efficient method of compressing air, have been greatly reduced in size and installation cost for a given capacity rating. New materials and fabrication techniques are being used, by most manufacturers, to produce less costly plants in total. Many packaged plants are available, which generally means a more complete assembly for shipment. This type of construction offers savings in handling and erection costs at the site. A warning is in order, however - the extent of packaging in any given plant should be investigated carefully to determine what is included and just what field costs can be realized. A suggested specification has been offered for consideration when studying comparative costs. Rotating machines intrigue many because of their potential as regard fewer wearing parts, higher speeds and hence smaller units, utilizing less expensive drivers, and lack of contamination of the compressed air by lubricants. The inherent shortcomings of these machines - lower •efficiency and capacity control - have been much improved lately, and this type of plant is now becoming quite popular. Noise control, of much concern to everyone, is another development that has received considerable attention.Systems for efficient capacity control and continuous monitoring of compressor operation offer additional reliability and low-cost operation of the modern compressed air plant. Accessory equipment and its effect on over-all plant operation is also considered."

Recirculation is the major concern associated with the utilization of booster fans. In controlled recirculation, a portion of the return air is purposely mixed with the intake air and the mixture is directed towards a working district, while the air quantity and gas concentrations in the air are closely monitored and managed. The objectives of this study were to determine the gas concentration in intake and return airways during controlled recirculation, and to determine the recirculation fraction for multiple headings. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory model to determine the effect of controlled recirculation on the quality of air circulated through the working faces. Preliminary results showed that recirculation is beneficial to ventilation planning because it reduces the build-up of air contaminants at the working faces and reduces the overall power consumptions. The experimental results were used to quantify the recirculation fraction and to calibrate ventilation models of the laboratory model. These models are used to simulate the controlled recirculation and to predict the gas concentrations in multiple headings.

ONE of the reasons advanced for the decline in prospecting and discovery is that, as regards surficial examination, the law of diminishing returns is becoming applicable. Fewer surficially unprospected fields remain; therefore, fewer discoveries by such means result. Much in the nature of mineral resources remains to be unearthed, but even now, and more so in the future, will discovery depend on painstaking petrographic and structural mapping, aided, where necessary, by judicious applications of all the complementary scientific knowledge and devices (e.g., thin section microscopy, geophysics, and drilling) that experience proves effective in localizing a mineral deposit even beneath drift, lake, or muskeg. It is to be expected, then, that the rate of discovery will decrease, that the cost per discovery will greatly increase, and that the work of discovery will become more and more the careful, methodical assembling of field data, conscientiously interpreted on the basis of scientific knowledge by trained, experienced operatives. In view of these trends, the status of applied geophysics to Canadian mining exploration and development work might well be reviewed. The niche which geophysics may occupy relative to geological surveying and drilling has been clarified by the last twenty years' experience. The cloud of somewhat justifiable scepticism that followed the 'geophysical promotion' period of the late 1920's has lifted. Mining, exploration, and finance companies, in open-minded fashion, are seeking sound advice as to what are the scope and limitations of the geophysical methods at present practised. The purpose of this paper and the following one is, therefore, as far as lies within the author's power, to review briefly the geophysical methods at present in practice in Canada, and, at greater length, to joint out impartially and critically their scope, merits, shortcomings, an possible future development. The treatment will be non-technical, the hope being that an accurate statement of the present status of geophysics in Canada may do much to result in a sounder, saner growth of what, in the future, shall undoubted} y prove an increasingly useful tool in exploration and development work. ?

Replacing diesel power in underground metal mining vehicles with available clean energy (e.g. hydrogen, lithium-ion batteries) is now a priority due to worker health issues, the increasing price of diesel, ventilation costs and air quality. Hydrogen fuel cells are a known and broadly applied power technology. They have been the focus of a dedicated research program to carry our proof of concept projects as well as regulatory developments for mining application. However, hydrogen remains a demanding energy vector to use in confined, underground applications. Standardization and safety considerations are being addressed in the industrial consortium Hydrogen Mine Introduction Initiative (HMII). Research projects are being carried out to resolve the gaps for regulated use. This article focuses on HMII objectives and Project results. The first has reviewed the relevant codes and standards and mine regulations, indicating that hydrogen and fuel cells could be allowed underground and that current codes, especially the Canadian Hydrogen Installation Code would be sufficient for hydrogen use. The second project established the standard hydrogen storage and distribution architecture along with related risks and safety requirements for its use in the third project, using an underground test chamber to delineate the behaviour of hydrogen leaks in confined conditions with various ventilation regimes and ignition studies. This project will end in 2013. It will be followed by the last project, which will establish best practices in support of regulations development, and develop the ISO standard for mine hydrogen infrastructure and underground application.

With the present-day trend of rising labour costs and a lowering of production efficiency of workmen, it has become imperative that every effort be made to use manpower to the greatest advantage and to mechanize mining as much as possible. During the past few years this trend has gained much prominence in the Porcupine camp. In view of this, the executive of the Porcupine Branch considered that the Mechanical Movement of Muck would be a very timely subject for a Symposium. Accordingly a Committee was formed, with A. K. Douglass, Mine Superintendent for Delnite Mines, Ltd., as Chairman, and the Symposium was held in the Auditorium of the McIntyre Community Building, Schumacher, on March 25th last. Papers dealing with shovel loader and mechanical scraper operation at six of the larger mines of the camp were presented and discussed, and a tabulation was prepared giving data on the machines in operation at a total of eleven mines. The papers and tabulation, reproduced below, will doubtless be of considerable interest to operators of mines in all parts of Canada.

In 1953, a deposit of sedimentary oolitic iron ore was discovered in the Clear Hills area of northwestern Alberta. Since that time, detailed drilling has outlined reserves in excess of 200 million tons of ore grading 30 to 35 per cent iron. Attempts to physically beneficiate the ore to meet blast furnace or direct reduction feed specifications have been, in general, unsuccessful. In 1960, Premier Steel Mills Limited and the Research Council of Alberta jointly sponsored a pilot-plant test at the R-N Corporation at Birmingham, Alabama. About 5,000 tons of ore were treated, and briquettes containing 90 per cent Fe were produced, with 83 per cent recovery. At the same time that the R-N tests were being made, the Research Council initiated a program to produce high-purity powders by chemical methods. "In the past, the metallurgical industry was most of the time dedicated on their main commodity, recovering base metals like zinc, copper or lead but leaving other valuable side elements in the generated residues. As a result, these accompanying minor elements, like gold, silver, indium or also PGMs can be found in the dumps of the corresponding industry. Because of political unrest, strikes, economic reasons or decreasing primary resources leading to a high supply risk, also those mentioned minor elements moved into the focus of the recycling industry. Therefore, beside the base metals, first of all the recovery of those minor metals would be of high interest contributing to the economic viability of recycling processes, although they occur in much smaller quantities in materials. In this context, residues from zinc industry, like leaching residues or precipitation residues show high potential to carry silver as well as indium next to lead and zinc. Therefore, the paper summarizes carried out thermochemical calculations investigating a possible recovery of silver as well as indium by volatilization and the influence of zinc and lead on this process. Based on these theoretical investigations with HSC, trials in lab scale were done verifying the obtained results.INTRODUCTIONHuge amounts of iron precipitate, mainly jarosite get landfilled every year although there is a high content of valuable metals in this residue beside iron. Nevertheless, jarosite has to be dumped due to the presence of contaminating heavy metals. The accumulation of these residues takes up massive land on the one hand but also causes a series of environmental problems in ecosystems on the other. Moreover, some toxic ingredients such as arsenic and cadmium can be dissolved in rain water and are therefore harmful to the health of the aquatic systems. (Erdem & Özverdi, 2011; ÖzverdI & Erdem, 2010) Approximately 0.5 t of dry jarosite accumulate in the production of 1 t of zinc by the hydrometallurgical zinc-winning route (Svens, 2010). Jarosite is a precipitation residue formed during the iron removal. In general, the iron already exists in the zinc ore which is why zinc ferrite builds up during the roasting step of the zinc ore. Zinc ferrite is only soluble in strongly acidic solutions and during the hot acid leaching step it gets dissolved while zinc and iron enter the solution. It is necessary to get rid of the iron because otherwise it would deposit on the cathode first due to its precious character which would be harmful in the zinc-winning electrolysis. Nevertheless successful investigations were done by adding chlorine to the jarosite to recover silver. These findings leads to another residue which occurs in huge amounts – electric arc furnace dust (abbreviated with EAFD) from the iron and steel industry. In 2013 the annual electric steel production reached about 451 million tons. Around 15-20 kg of EAFD is produced per ton of steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF), creating approximately up to 9 million tons of dust per year. (Grabda, Oleszek, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2014; World Steel Association) Next to elements like zinc, lead and iron, chlorine and fluorine are present in this dust. While galvanized steel plates in the scrap act as a source for zinc, casting powders, flame retardants and synthetic coatings are responsible for the chlorine and fluorine contents in the dust."

Introduction The importance of coal in our economy is well established, but it may not .be so generally realized how important a part it plays in our daily life. Select a product - any product - and, if it is made in America, bituminous coal has touched it first. Everywhere we will find coal, derivatives of coal, or functions made possible by coal. Apart from the well known major uses of coal for domestic purposes, coking, utilities, railways, and manufacture of steel and cement, there are over 200,000 products derived from coal, from lipstick colours to nylon products and perfumes. An item of interest is the recent action of the Canadian Government in voting $90,000 for development of coal deposits in Yukon Territory to make coal available to the settlers in that area. The value of this move, in case of some emergency, is very evident. Coal in its several stages of formation as peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, semi-bituminous, semi-anthracite, and anthracite, has been used for centuries. Coal, as such, was not very well known to the ancients. First reference to "magic stone', or coal, was in 371 BC by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle. This substance was said to burn like wood coal or charcoal and was used by the smiths. The first record we have in modern times was in 852 AD, when sea coal was gathered by the cowled monks of Durham, in Britain, and even at that time a major problem was transportation. Our first record of coal in this continent was near Richmond, Virginia, in 1700. Commercial mining was not under way, however, until 1750. The anthracite fields (presumably in Pennsylvania) were opened in 1793. Even so, there was no extensive mining until about the year 1820. The famous Pocahontas coalfields were opened in 1883. The earliest record of coal mining in Canada is about 1746.

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. With respect to impurities, HBM&S' copper smelter, located in Flin Flon, Manitoba, is in an unusual position. In addition to the usual concerns, the fact that copper and zinc production at Flin Flon is closely integrated results in the unique situation where feed to the copper smelter typically contains 7% to 8% zinc. This paper discusses the ramifications to copper smelter operations resulting from the marriage of HBM&S' metallurgical plants. Distributions of impurities (specifically Zn, Pb, Ni, As, Bi, Sb, and Cd) are presented and operating practices designed to reduce the impact of impurities on anode copper quality are detailed.

Ltd. (HBM&s), has been operating its metallurgical complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba, since 1930. The smelter and zinc plant were originally separate entities with respect to production. The smelting operation consisted of traditional multiple-hearth roasters, a reverberatory furnace and Peirce-Smith converters. The zinc plant also utilized multiple hearth roasters and then followed with sulphuric acid leaching, purification and electrowinning. The zinc plant also recovered cadmium from a separate purification/electrowinning circuit.The two plants operated essentially independently of each other until rising zinc levels in the copper concentrate and large stockpiles of zinc-rich leach residues prompted the construction of the fuming plant in 1949. The smelter used pulverized coal to reduce zinc oxide present in the reverb slag and then captured the resulting zinc bearing fume in the fuming plant baghouse. The fume was sent to a separate ""oxide roaster"" in the zinc plant where it was first roasted to remove halogens and then leached to recover the contained zinc. This oxide fume became a major source of feed to the zinc plant accounting for roughly one quarter of the total zinc production. Furthermore, through the smelter's treatment of sulphide leach residue, both copper and zinc recoveries were improved for the over-all complex."

Since 1978, most systematic studies of AMD passive treatment with limestone drains (LD) have dealt with coal mines in the United States. The authors present in this paper the first results of a triennial study initiated in 1999 on the performance of LD installed at the Ni-Cu Lorraine old mine site in Temiscamingue during a remediation plan that involved the installation of a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) over the reactive pyrrhotite-rich tailings. Typically, a LD is a trench enclosed by impervious materials filled with crushed limestone and may be oxic or anoxic. Four LD (one filled with marble and 3 with dolomite) were installed at the Lorraine site. The LD have been in operation since May 1999 and are performing differently. The most contaminated mine effluent flows south and is directed towards 3 LD filled with crushed dolomite, while a 4th LD was filled with crushed marble and installed west. The LD filled with marble has been generating maximum alkalinity since the beginning of the passive treatment. Two of the dolomite drains have been generating alkalinity since mid-summer 1999, but one is not, even if a substantial pH raise was observed. A pH above 5.5 is required usually for the dolomite drains to start generating alkalinity. The installation of LD at the Lorraine site contributes significantly to the reduction of metals and sulphates loading.

"IntroductionRECENT ADVANCES in geo-chemistry and in •our knowledge •of crystal structure provide a key which enables us to create a systematic picture of the genesis of many ore deposits. This genetic scheme may be used with confidence in assessing certain types of orebodies and may be of some aid in actual exploration, since it affords a rational explanation of the dependence of the composition •of the ore minerals on that of the rock type in which they occur with which they -are •associated. For purposes of the present paper, .the elements chosen are •chromium, vanadium, iron, and titanium. The oxides of all these metals occur in deposits of similar or related type, and it is proposed to show that, for each, the composition of the •ore mineral is related to •the composition of the enclosing :rock, and that one of the principal factors controlling the composition of the ore is the ionic size of its constituent elements.Geochemical PrinciplesThe crystals of the rock-forming silicates and of the magmatic oxide minerals are essentially ionic types. This means that they are composed •of oppositely charged ions such as Mg²+ and 0²-, which are held together by electrostatic attraction. The ions of each element are spherical, with characteristic size known as the ionic radius. Crystals are built up by the packing of these spheres in the most stable arrangement compatible with the size and the size and valence of the ions• involved.Many of the principles governing the formation of ionic crystals are •simple ,and logical."

Both the dry and the wet fluorination systems require hydrogen fluoride (HF) for the process of uranium conversion to uranium hexafluoride (UF6). The dry methods depend on the electrolysis of HF to generate the fluorine (F2) required for the high temperature pyro-fluorination. The wet methods require aqueous HF in water solutions for the low temperature hydro-fluorination (Argonne, 2019). This paper uses the available HF safety guidelines and industry information to discuss the issues of transportation, storage and utilization. Health effects and environmental considerations are reviewed. Safe practices for handling the HF (both as anhydrous and as aqueous) are considered. Proper selection of different materials of construction are discussed, for both the anhydrous and the aqueous HF.

In New Brunswick, during the 1970's, rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Basin of the Fundy Epieugeosyncline have been the target of intense exploration and drilling programs. Sylvinite ore was discovered in three structural basins of the Moncton Basin near Sussex through a drilling program sponsored jointly by the Federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. In 1973, exploration and development rights to the western end of the Moncton Basin were awarded to the Potash Company of America. One high-grade sylvinite unit, varying between 15 and 70feet in true thickness, with a strike length in excess of 5 miles, is located near the stratigraphic top of the assymetric, semi-diapiric, locally overturned anticline. Late in 1975, exploration and development rights to the Marchbank Syncline were awarded to International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited. To date, a stratigraphic evaporite sequence, forming the semi-diapiric core of the syncline, has been shown to contain one major high-grade sylvinite unit averaging 70 feet in true thickness over a strike length in excess of 2 miles. Both properties appear to have potential considerably in excess of that revealed by the exploratory drilling, and both, because of numerous mineralogical, structural and stratigraphic similarities, are thought to be depositionally contemporaneous. Both potash deposits lie within 50 miles of the Saint John all-weather deepwater port, thus affording easy access to eastern and mid-western U.S. markets. Further opportunities for potash exploration in New Brunswick are considered excellent, as there are large untested areas with favourable geology and known potassium water anomalies and negative gravity anomalies occurring in the Moncton and Cumberland basins, and in the Central Basin of New Brunswick.

Operating CIP/CIL gold recovery plants in the arid regions of Western Australia face unique challenges due to water and ore quality issues. The presence of cations of Mg, Fe and Cu metals in water supplies and leached sulphide ores can have considerable effect on plant consumption of lime and cyanide, due to pH buffering and complexation effects. Reagent costs are critical to many of these operations. In this paper, computational modelling is used to analyse a number of process options to mitigate such issues. This requires careful consideration of the chemistry of the process system, and the ability to predict accurately the response of speciation and precipitation reactions to changing process conditions. The Mg-Fe-Cu-CN-H20 system is specifically modelled in this application. The Gibbs Free Energy Minimisation thermodynamic framework has been selected to model equilibrium phenomena. Furthermore, this approach has been extended to the process flowsheet level, incorporating multiple unit operations and recycle streams in a steady-state mass balance model. The Gibbs equilibrium composition module of HSC Chemistry software has been successfully integrated into the commercial flowsheeting package SysCAD. Consideration of the Gibbs Energy Minimisation capabilities of other flowsheeting packages has also been given. This approach has been successful in simulating the aqueous process chemistry typical of such plants. It has resulted in a predictive capability where equilibrium states respond appropriately to process changes. Potential cost savings may be identified by examining alternative process conditions to minimise overall reagent consumption.This methodology may be extended to other hydrometallurgical plants where issues of solution ideality, temperature and other equilibrium processes are sufficiently understood.

THE recorded production of the Sheep Creek camp from 1900, when the Yellowstone Mining Company first put its mill into operation, to the present day is in excess of $17,500,000. Of this total, $2,500,000 can be attributed to the early period from 1900 to 1916, at which time increased costs of labour and material due to the Great War forced abandonment of any operations on a large scale for a number of years. Since the camp was revived in 1929, at which time the Reno mine started large-scale operations, and the early 'thirties', when the increased price of gold induced the commencement of operations on other properties in the district, total gross production has been in excess of $15,000,000. In addition to the above totals, intermittent shipments were made by lessees and small operators, principally during the period of inactivity from 1916 to 1929, but no records of this production are available. The Sheep Creek camp would rank fifth in the Province-behind Rossland, Portland Canal, Bridge River, and Hedley-in gross gold production, but, because of relatively inexpensive mining and milling costs, would occupy a more prominent position in regard to total dividends paid. Operating mines at the present time include Reno Gold Mines, Gold Belt Mining Company, Kootenay Belle Gold Mines, and Sheep Creek Gold Mines. Each one of these companies, with the exception of Kootenay Belle, represents a consolidation of several smaller properties, all of which were in existence for a number of years prior to 1929. These four companies, at the present time, own, or hold options on, practically all the important claims in the district with the exception of a very few claims and fractions still held by private owners.
