The mechanism by which stratiform ore deposits of PGE (platinum-group elements) are laid down in ultrama?c igneous complexes is not completely clear. Early studies by the author and coworkers on numerical analyses of the convective cooling of low-Rayleigh-number magma chambers examined the effect of suspended crystal load on ?uid density, and raised the possibility that the growth of the suspended crystal load during cooling could split a magma chamber into several convecting layers. The lower layers would have a higher content of refractory phases than the upper layers, which would consist of more evolved melt. This paper considers numerical modelling, as well as theoretical and experimental work in other ?elds dealing with suspended loads in ?uids. The calculations, which are based on the physics of convecting magmas, yield quantitative relationships consistent with the observation that economically interesting stratiform PGE deposits are restricted to large magma bodies, and also yield estimation of the depth in a magma chamber at which certain grades of mineralization may occur.

Mining mobile equipment is becoming larger in order to lower operation cost and increase productivity; however, their performance characteristics are often limited by the tire capabilities. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of tire research, the lack of comprehensive knowledge on tire performance characteristics impedes the advancement of off-the-road tires. Longer haul roads, and a severe operating environment make tires more vulnerable than other components of a vehicle. Furthermore, due to a limited availability of large tires, mines are facing shortages. Thus mines and tire service companies are keen to improve tire performance, extend tire life and hence lower operating costs. This paper reviews the relevant tire performance research, analyzes tire interactions with the surrounding environment, tire maintenance practices and operational issues using a case study based on data collected during an ongoing project with Fountain Tire.

Gypsum scrap generated from wallboard manufacturing, construction and deconstruction activities in North America, Europe and Japan is a recognized environmental problem. Landfill disposal of this gypsum scrap is problematic, with deposits often creating hydrogen sulphide emissions and metallic sulphide groundwater leachates. Of these regions, Europe is the most advanced in dealing with the issue having enacted legislation, which will come into effect in July 2005 that will strongly encourage gypsum recycling throughout the EU. An estimated 10% to 17% of all gypsum used in the wallboard industry becomes recyclable scrap, which represents approximately 1% of the total waste stream in North America. In the United States, 2.5 to 4.5 Mt of gypsum scrap is generated each year; the volume is similar in Europe (the percentage of total tonnage is less because of the higher use of brick and concrete). The Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia has banned gypsum from its landfills, and as a result, all gypsum scrap is now recycled. New West Gypsum Recycling, a Canadian firm, uses its proprietary technology to process large quantities of gypsum scrap that is reincorporated into new wallboard, at percentages ranging up to 25%. The operation of New West Gypsum Recycling Inc. of Langley, Vancouver is examined as a case study and recommendations are provided as to how other urban regions can implement similar gypsum scrap recycling programs.

THE realization by metallurgists of the important effect that traces of impurity may have upon the properties of a metal, and their steady demand for purer and still purer metals, have made the special cools for 'trace' analysis of increasing value. In the United States at least, spectrographic analysis is becoming the standard method for determining the impurities in zinc die-casting alloys. The Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, as a producer of virtually pure zinc, uses the spectrograph to control the purity of its products, and-as the electrolytic method is employed here-to control both the impurities in the electrolyte and those 'trace' elements, which, while they do not contaminate the zinc, have a great effect on the plating efficiency. The general plan of the laboratory is shown in Figure l; the housing for air purification, which is on the roof, is indicated by broken lines. One of the chief factors affecting the layout was the easy way in which a spectrographic assay can be spoiled by contamination. To minimize the quantity of dust tracked in, the laboratory was made separate from the general research laboratories, and an office was placed between the two. This arrangement has its drawback because of the traffic through the office, but it has effectively cut down dust. For similar reasons, the available space was subdivided into a number of small rooms, and the air currents in the laboratory were so arranged that dust would be carried where it would do least harm. Air is drawn in at the roof over a 50-kilowatt bank of Calrod heaters, through Annis air filters, by a No. 4 Sirocco fan. Most of it is forced into the spectrograph room, but some goes to the office and darkroom. The air flow is from the spectrograph room, through the plate-measuring room, into the chemical laboratory, where it is exhausted by a No. 1% Sirocco fan on the fume hood. Air can also re-circulate from the plate-measuring room back to the heater. The arrangement is such that the air in the laboratory is maintained at higher pressure than the outside air; consequently, no dirt enters through cracks about the windows and doors. A thermo-regulator holds the temperature constant within one or two degrees; only on the hottest days in summer does the temperature rise enough to affect the focus of the instrument.

Potential changes in government policy, such as tax incentives, E.G.M.A. allowances, etc. affect the economic future of present and proposed mining ventures.This paper will discuss various measures of effectiveness normally used in assessing this future, such as discounted cash flow, etc., and will describe means of introducing uncertainty into the computations. As the recognition of risk and attitudes toward accepting it are very important in the life of a mine executive, there will be a brief discussion of utility theory and its application to risk analysis.Risk models are usually of a size to warrant the use of an electronic computer. Therefore, to demonstrate the simple interaction necessary between a financial analyst and such a model, data will be read into a remote computer from a time-sharing terminal in the meeting room. It will be shown that changes may be rapidly made and alternative policies investigated ""on line"" to a computer."

The reduction of aqueous slurries of uranyl carbonate at elevated temperature with compressed hydrogen m the presence of metal catalysts and certain organic promoters has been shown. to yield uranium dioxide. The reduction takes place in a sequence of steps. The purity and sintering properties of the dioxide make it of interest as a starting material for fuel element production. Simple control can be exercised over the surface area and oxygen/uranium ratio of the product during reduction. "Aerial surveys of the open pits have been conducted regularly at Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. -a subsidiary of American Smelting and Re-fining Company -since 1958. Ground controls are supplied by Lake Asbestos, and a topographic map of the pits at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft., with 2-foot contour intervals, is obtained by aerial photography. The information from the topographic map is then transferred by the Lake Asbestos engineering staff to sections from which the volumes removed are calculated. Considering the size and complexity of the operation, this system has proved to be the cheapest, fastest and most accurate way of determining the quantities of rock and overburden removed. More than 11,000,000 tons of ore and waste are mined each year in three different pits. Further-more, the nature, shape and extent of the orebodies make it necessary to mine on many (up to eight) benches of a pit during a single year. In addition, there are sections of the pits where it is impossible or un-safe to survey the crest of some benches by standard ground methods. For these reasons, the tonnages obtained by truck count are checked and adjusted by aerial survey. These surveys are now taking place every six months. With this system, it is possible for a two-man surveying crew to look after all field work in the mine area."

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. "AbstractA commercial method .has been developed for controlling the texture of chrysotile asbestos fibers so that they may possess properties comparable with natural sem1-harsh fibers for use in wet •processes.The physical properties of the soft, silky and slimy fibers are partially altered by a flash-heating process which removes a portion of the molecular water.The heat-treated fibers show an improvement in filterability, an increase in bulk, absorption, and surface area and better electrical properties, such as volume resistivity.IntroductionCHRYSOTILE ASBESTOS fibers are found in nature having varying degrees of texture, referred to as soft, semi-harsh, and harsh. Fibers of each type of texture have inherent characteristics which directly affect their usefulness to industry. Visual differences are apparent under a microscope where it is seen that the soft-textured fibers have a silky, serpentine or wavy appearance, whereas the harsh-textured fibers are coarser and spicular. Semi-harsh fibers, of course, have properties intermediate between these extremes.Fankuchen and Schneider ( l) have shown by the use of low-angle X-ray scattering that the diameter of the harsh type of chrysotile fiber is somewhat greater than tha of the soft variety. Surface area measurements on various chrysotiles of different textures tend to confirm their findings. By nitrogen adsorption methods, it was found that the surface areas of soft types of chrysotile asbestos are approximately 23M2 / g whereas for the harsh types they are as low as 11M2/g."

THE Great War forced the peoples of the world to recognize the importance of the wise development and use of the world's natural resources. Not the least, and perhaps the most, important, is the world's fuel supply- solid, liquid, and gaseous. Without fuel our civilization would be impossible, and mankind would of necessity have to congregate in the torrid zones of the earth's surface for at least six months of every year. Of the three classes of fuels the solid ones are the most plentiful, as well as being the most widely distributed, since few countries are entirely devoid of solid fuels of one kind or another. Until a hundred years ago wood was the fuel most generally used in this country, but since then coal has supplanted wood as a fuel in all its uses, except in the outlying districts and among the farming communities. For many years the supply of coal was thought to be unlimited, but as years went by more thought and study were given to the world's coal resources, until today not only are the limits known, but in one instance at least their depletion is predicted to be almost within the age of living men, unless more provident methods are put into practice for their winning and utilization.

BEFORE describing the methods used for fabricating uranium into various shapes and sizes it is necessary to illustrate briefly the unusual conditions under which uranium has to operate when used as a fuel element in a reactor. During reactor operation, for every fission that occurs two atoms of intensely radioactive fission products are produced together with two or three neutrons. The neutrons that are ejected possess several m.e.v. of energy and when one of them strikes an atomic nucleus, that atom acquires up to 105 e.v. of kinetic energy. This is large enough to displace the atom from its lattice position and send it shooting through the crystal, displacing other atoms out of their lattice positions. The net result is that a large number of vacancies and interstitial atoms are formed within the crystal lattice which sometimes have profound effects on the physical and mechanical properties of the material in question.

"FLAC3D is an important numerical analysis software to study dynamic response of rock slope. In application of the program, the common issues such as absorbing boundary and the method to apply wave have been well studied. However, effects of model mesh size, damping and width of slope are still unknown. In order to make the result more convictive, this article has discussed the above issues systematically. It found that when the maximum mesh size is smaller than 1/10~1/8 of the smallest wavelength, the mesh size is smaller, the computational accuracy is higher. Meanwhile, values of damping and width of slope have no effect on the result. Additional, results of FLAC3D modeling on wave transmission across rock joints agree well with analytical solutions, so it has verified the capability and accuracy of FLAC3D on dynamic response of rock slope.INTRODUCTIONChina is a mountainous country accompanied with many earthquakes. Thousands of geological disasters are triggered by the Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan Province, and the majority of the disasters are landslides induced (Xu et al., 2009). Meanwhile, the paper (Li et al., 2003) points out five significant issues about dynamic loading in the area of geotechnical engineering, which includes the study of rock slope stability under earthquakes, and the dynamic response of rock slopes is one of its important study issues."

In order to make increased use of automation in copper smelting, it is evident that a useful first step .world be the accurate determination of the copper end point in the converter operation. After laboratory tests, the copper end points in a copper converter at Gaspe Copper Mmes Ltd. were determined without reference to melt samples or other observations. The results indicated that the rapid measurement of the S02 level in the gas released from the converter has potential as a new and independent method of determining the copper end point in converter operation.

Viburnum, located in the foothills of the Ozarks in south-east Missouri, is the site of a modern lead mining and milling operation. Two mines are currently producing a total of 5,000 tons per day and a third mine is in the final development stage, with full production scheduled for late this year (1964). These mines will supply the tonnage required to keep the Viburnum mill operating at a full capacity of 7,000 tons per day for many years. The efficient underground mining operation is completely trackless. Drill jumbos are used to break the ore in a room and pillar method of mining. Transloaders, or St. Joe shovels, and trucks do the loading and hauling. The Viburnum mill has a world-wide reputation as a most efficient operation. This is due to the extensive use of automatic process controls, and labour saving materials handling facilities. Introduction Gunite is a mixture of sand and cement applied to any surface by being shot by compressed air through a nozzle, where it is wetted just before leaving the orifice. The mixture is transported through a hose from a machine called a 'cement-gun'(l). Guniting of rock surfaces has been standard practice at the Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, for several years. Where used on walls and backs of cross-cuts; shaft stations, and other rock openings, as an air seal, gunite has eliminated the necessity of constant scaling to keep rock from falling from these places, and, under worse conditions, it has been used in place of timber supports. This has been of definite help in reducing costs, promoting safety, and minimizing fire hazards. During the past year guniting has been quite extensively used here in the rock head-works of the new internal shaft, No. 12, sunk from the 3,875-foot level. Gunite is at present being applied to the stations of that shaft well below a mile from the surface. This paper describes the method of guniting as carried out at the McIntyre, and illustrates how, by the adoption of this process, mining problems connected with scaling and loose ground have been completely solved. It is hoped that the information presented may stimulate discussion and assist in the use of gunite in this and other mines. The guniting method of applying cement was first developed by Carl E. Akeley (2), Curator of the Field Museum, Chicago, in 1907, and was exhibited in New York at the Cement Show in 1910. The museum was located in one of the old World's Fair buildings, built of roughcast and in bad repair. Mr. Akeley, who was a man of inventive nature, set about devising means of applying cement to repair the walls. The cement-gun was the result. Mr. Akeley was a taxidermist of note, a sculptor, and also the inventor of the Akeley camera. In his work, he was in the habit of using fast setting materials to build up foundations for statues, etc.

"Competitive pressures dictate that the mining industry moves to larger mobile underground haulage equipment with more advanced equipment mechanization, higher levels of autonomous operation of machines, and longer periods between access by maintenance personnel. Since such new machines will of necessity be more complex than existing designs, machine reliability has become a key issue in progressing toward advanced mobile underground haulage equipment. Reliability and maintainability models of such equipment are practically non-existent in the literature. This paper addresses the issue of reliability and maintainability of mobile underground haulage equipment on two fronts: reliability modelling to enhance decision making for maintenance planning; and reliability simulation to enable evaluation of more rigorous production planning scenarios. A case study from a gold mine in the Chilean Andes is presented, for which reliability models of mobile underground haulage equipment, specifically load-hauldump vehicles and underground haul trucks, are developed, and a reliability-based simulation implemented. IntroductionMaintenance accounts for 20% to 35% of the overall operating budget for a typical underground operation, and hence represents the largest portion of the mine’s controllable operating costs (Cutifani et al., 1996; Campbell, 1997; Goddard, 1998). This paper outlines the changes that have occurred, and which are still unfolding in Canadian coal mining, firstly, in terms of mining technology and productivity, secondly, in terms of corporate divestments, acquisitions and bankruptcies, and finally, in terms of resource development. "At first glance, the activities related to mining and mineral exploration appear to be local or domestic, rather than international, in nature. Minerals, as corporeal or tangible property, form an integral part of the land in which they are found until extracted and exploited commercially. Even in the latter phase, the tangible nature of minerals gives the impression that the law governing the commercialization of minerals is the law of their situs at any given time. The nature of minerals appears to negate the international aspect of mineral enterprises.The fundamental flaw in the above analysis is its focus upon the nature of minerals, rather than the role of persons in mineral enterprises. The high costs of mineral exploration and commercialization invariably require the involvement of international consortiums or joint ventures. Governments may not have access to the funds necessary to exploit the mineral resources that they control. Local or domestic enterprises may not have sufficient expertise for mineral exploration. Further, markets for various types of minerals are far from localized or static. For these and other reasons, the tangible and localized nature of minerals belies the fundamentally international nature of mineral exploration and commercialization."
