The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 × 100 400 mm long) "Polyscin" Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.

The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is low angle, duplex thrust system that has developed in a graphitic pelite schist within the Otago schist belt, New Zealand . At Round Hill lateral ramps have developed parallel to the movement direction between+ the footwall and hangingwall shears. These structures exhibit normal oblique-slip displacement which has been an important mechanism for creating space in an otherwise compressional system. Gold-bearing quartz veins were emplaced along the boundary shears and lateral ramps during thrusting. Gold within the lateral ramps is coarse (up to 300 microns) however hanging wall cataclasite development in the boundary shears after the gold was deposited has reduced the grainzise of most of the gold to less than one micron. This bimodal gold distribution has metallurgical implications with respect to the maximisation of gold recovery at Macraes.

Six simulations by the Mpnte Carlo method employing both classical and geostatistical techniques are presented for the determination of the probability distribution of the in situ value of a coal seam. To avoid the problem of qualitative estimation of parameter variability in the calculation of an arbitrary seam value, only data values from borehole information were used to quantify the variation in four coai seam parameters.The method which is suggested as being the most appropriate is a particular geostatistical approach that employs the best linear unbiased estimate and the error of estimation for a number of two dimensional blocks. The results indicate that the variance of the coal seam unit value may be much higher than that indicated by the classical approach because of the spatial variability that is properly incorporated in the geostatistical approach.The model used in the Monte Carlo simulation to determine the economic value of a coal seam can be extended to incorporate all those parameters which are necessary for a true estimation of the probability distribution of the coal seam value. A time value concept for discounting can also be incorporated to optimize the economic return of a coal mining project.

Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

Many policy issues facing the mining industry and affected communities are at a level of complexity that they can be called ‘wicked’ problems. The term ‘wicked’ in this context is used, not in the sense of iniquity, but rather as social and economic issues highly resistant to resolution. For the resource extraction sector and affected communities there are an array of challenges embedded in the industry’s production and profit paradigm, the remoteness of mineral reserves and affected communities’ expectations of economic benefit and a positive legacy. The mining industry as a whole is dominated by economic, political, legislative and market structures that influence and constrain interactions between mine operations and local communities. For communities, with particular reference to regional Western Australia, intractable problems include the uncertainty of, yet increasing dependence on, a mining economy. Questionable outcomes for local communities include the limited realisation of local employment and business development benefits, and low overall outcomes or low multiplier effects. ‘Wicked’ problems, according to the literature, are best addressed via collaboration. In the mid-west region of WA, with mining and infrastructure construction underway, alliances have formed between mining companies, the major port and rail infrastructure project (Oakajee Port and Rail) and regional and local governance stakeholders. The major impetus for these affiliations is to expedite planning and associated infrastructure development taking into account the lessons from other mineral-led regions. What has resulted is an array of innovative approaches to stubborn problems including planning well in advance of full-scale mining; regionally coordinated procurement; ‘mine ready’ local businesses; and strategic investments in social infrastructure; including community trust funds paid in advance of project delivery. This paper examines these innovative approaches/alliances and assesses their effectiveness in addressing long standing mining/community dilemmas.

The uptake of gold by activated carbon from acid chloride solutions involves the reduction of gold(IIl) to metallic gold. Deposition occurs only on the surface of the carbon at localized active sites at first, and subsequently at less active areas. The rate of uptake depends on the surface area of activated carbon, which confirms results from a recently published study (de Siegel and Soto, 1984). Increased rates of uptake were observed at higher temperatures and lower chloride concentrations due to the decreased stability of AuCI4-, the major gold(IIl) species present. Recoveries of gold approached 100 per cent for a contact time of 60 minutes at 20°C in a well stirred solution initially 5 ppm in gold(III) and containing 0.5 per cent w/v coconut-shell carbon. The presence of 0.25 Mnitric acid or 100 ppm iron(IIl) had no detectable effect on either rate or efficiency of gold uptake.

The pores within iron ore sinter are important for producing a high quality material that is strong and easily reduced. The complementary methods of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) were used to characterise the structure of industrial and pilot scales sinters across a wide range of pore sizes (3 nm to 100 µm for MIP and 50 µm to 5 mm for CT). The inhomogeneous nature of sinter and the variation in the measurements make it difficult to compare samples. The generalised additive modelling (GAM) approach, using the open source statistical software package, R, has been applied to highlight where there are peaks in the concentration of pore sizes. Importantly, the shape of the GAM-fitted function and the heights of the peaks show statistically significant differences between samples. For the samples investigated, the GAM-fitted functions for the MIP volume distribution of pore diameters were found to have a common set of distinctive peaks at 0.005, 0.6 and 20 µm. The GAM approach was also applied to the X-ray CT measured pore wall thickness, highlighting a single peak whose position varies between samples. The cause of these distinctive peaks and their implications for sinter quality are discussed. Correlation was found between the volume in peak 1 (0.005 µm) and the concentration of primary hematite. No correlation was found between the pore wall thickness and the strength of the sinter, suggesting the composition of the pore walls may be more important. The primary purpose of these investigations is to determine dewatering requirements and likely impacts associated with mining operations. Standard aquifer testing techniques were carried out at multiple locations within the Ord Range near Pardoo, Western Australia. Aquifer properties of an oxidised haematite orebody were calculated from test pumping data conducted in five fully penetrating test bores. Hydraulic properties of the Ridley magnetite orebody were calculated based on short term constant rate pumping tests, and packer tests. Packer tests were conducted in undeveloped and uncased exploration holes and diamond core holes. The new data sheds light on the hydrogeological properties of this previously unexplored region of Western Australia.Aquifer testing procedures for each bore included a preliminary step test followed by a constant rate test. Recovery data were collected in each bore over a period of four to six hours. Prior to testing, background water levels and water samples were collected in a network of monitoring and exploration bores to establish baseline water levels, gradients and water quality. Water quality within the bedrock of the Ord Range varies from 2000 to 5500 mg/L TDS whereas water quality within the alluvial sequence of the De Grey River is highly variable (400 to 2500 mg/L TDS), but is predominantly brackish with some water of potable quality which is used to supply Port Hedland. Test pumping supports the conceptual hydrogeological model that consists of a pod like orebody (aquifer) surrounded by low permeability waste rock (BIF), with very weak hydraulic connection to the adjacent alluvial systems. Calculated hydraulic conductivity from test pumping data across Pardoo ranged from 0.01 to 59 m/d, depending on deposit tested.A groundwater model was used to simulate dewatering required in proposed pits and to estimate the impact of dewatering on the surrounding shallow alluvial aquifers. Test pumping and numerical groundwater flow modelling indicate the proposed below water table pits can be successfully dewatered utilising in pit dewatering production bores. Yields from individual dewatering bores will reduce with time due to the reduction in saturated aquifer thickness.Based on the numerical groundwater modelling and field investigations the likely impacts to the adjacent De Grey River alluvial aquifer system (within the Priority 1 De Grey River Water Reserve) resulting from mining and dewatering activities is considered minimal. Recalibration of the groundwater model will be undertaken once several months of dewatering data are available.The aim of this paper is to present a range of aquifer parameters derived through standard aquifer testing techniques for an area previously unexplored in terms of hydrogeological characteristics. It is the goal of the authors to provide this comparison data set for future work in similar geologic media.

It cannot be said that accurate and reliable ore reserve estimation is the fundamental of any mining operation success. Estimation techniques which are used to estimate the grade distribution of an orebody together with the assessment of uncertainty and risk have a vital influence on the success of any optimisation algorithm. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for assigning grade values to blocks. Various attempts have been made in order to compare geostatistical estimated methods for ore reserve estimation. This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of different estimation methods over changing the block dimension. For this reason, several block models with different dimensions were derived in Chador Malu iron ore mine which is located in 180 km northeast of Yazd in the centre of Iran. Each block model was estimated by different estimation methods such as nearest neighbours (NN), inverse distance (ID) and ordinary kriging (OK). The results of each estimation methods were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blastholes drilled in the ore over four benches of the pit. The results signify that by estimating the large block size, no significant improvement occurred due to the employment of different estimation techniques. Furthermore, the grades estimated based on ID method is more reliable, but OK methods estimated more accurate tonnage.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

The concept of using travelling magnetic fields created by linear motors was stimulated by Laithwaite who advanced ideas on motors with shaded poles (Laithwaite, 1968), rack and pinion motors (Laithwaite, 1970) as well as low speed, brushless motors and three dimensional motors (Laithwaite, 1973a and 1973b).Sudan (1963) and Sundberg (1969) had applied the concept to metallurgical processes. However, the use of travelling magnetic fields has not been used widely to produce conditions for the separation of magnetic from non-magnetic minera1s or even magnetic materials from non-magnetic materials, although some attempts were made by McCarthy (1922), Davis (1934), Dean, Gottschalk and Davis (1934) and Gottschalk (1934).Laithwaite (1973, a) while working with linear motors made suggestions for designing separators and in the work described here, the observations of Laithwaite and others are extended to determine the characteristics of the motor with a view to using it as a magnetic separator.

Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. Owing to the number of chemical processes now in use for the separation of metals from their ores, and the consequent employment of chemicals at the mine, it is sometimes necessary to be able to produce them on the spot. This particularlyapplies to sulphuric acid which may be required for the manufacture of chlorine and of sulphate of copper, or for the treatment of'sulphides and other purposes. It can be made from brimstone for rather less than £3 per ton, but when delivered to any distance from the works, the cost of packages and other charges would amount to more than the value of the acid.I hope therefore, that to any of the members of the Institute who may find it necessary to make sulphuric acid for their own requirements an outline of the process, and some details of the plant etc may be useful, and perhaps lead to their devising improvements, mechanical or otherwise. Though acid can be made from pyrites in Europe for about 15/- per ton, it is probable that for most metaIIurgical purposes the quantity required. and the uncertainty as to how long it would be needed, would make it advisable to spend as little as possible on plant, and so use brimstone, though more expensive, I have therefore given no details of pyrites burning, which is very fully treated by Prof, Lunge in his work on " Sulphuric Acid and Alkali."

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

THE choice of a pumping plant for the drainage of a mine is a matter of such importance that it is obvious that in a short paper it is impossible to go fully into the reasons governing the adoption of any particular type. The author, therefore, proposes to briefly discuss the methods.in vogue, and, as far as possible, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the numerous systems. The probiem is of extreme importance to the mining engineer, and it appears that in the past sufficient thought has not been given to this branch, as shown by the numerous failures which are encountered.When water is met with in large quantities, the development of the mine depends upon the pumping plant to such a great extent that the most careful consideration should be given before deciding on any particular scheme for drainage. The pumpingplant in a mine should be looked. upon in the light of an insurance policy, and should be treated as such, care being taken that the premium is as low as possibl~, and to ensure this it is necessary that the most efficient plant be secured. Local conditions play such an important part ill the design of a plant that no hard and fast rules can be laid down. The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

Over the past three decades, mining operations have seen a significant increase in the use of contractors for mining, camp management and catering, recruitment, maintenance, power management, and commissioning. More recently contractors have been engaged for stores and logistics, OH&S, environmental, exploration, training etc. In some countries, such as South Africa, the trend is towards total outsourcing of all aspects of a mining operation which is coordinated by the owners’ management team.During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) more Australian companies considered and/or took on this approach to recruiting for both projects and operations as mining companies were forced to rethink their corporate strategies as commodity prices plummeted to low levels, pushing operations and projects into potentially financially unviable territory.This paper discusses the labour recruitment, commissioning and operating strategy of Western Areas NL (WSA), with the assistance of Independent Metallurgical Operations Pty Ltd (IMO), as it progressed construction, commissioning and operation of the Cosmic Boy nickel concentrator at the Forrestania Nickel Project during and post GFC. The use of IMO contractors allowed Western Areas to mitigate labour cost risk during the uncertainty caused by the GFC and let their management team focus on the task of bringing a new operation into viable and profitable production.

Titanium is not yet being produced on a commercial scale despite the facts that it has some impressive properties, and that it occurs very abundantly in easily-mined, highgrade oxide ores. One important reason for this is that the excellent mechanical properties of the metal were not widely recognised and appreciated until about twenty years ago.Another factor which has tended to retard progress in titanium metallurgy has been the realization that the oxide minerals of titanium are very stable; in other words, considerable energy has to be expended to reduce the oxide to metal. Table 1 presents the minimum energies which would have to be expended to produce one ton of each of the metals, aluminium, magnesium, titanium and iron from their respective oxides under theoretically ideal conditions at normal temperature and pressure. At higher temperatures, the minimum energy requirements are different, but the values for the various metals still fall in the same order as indicated in Table 1.In actual fact, the energy consumption in the case of any particular metal is higher than the ideal value by an amount which can be determined only by' the results of plant practice.
