This paper summarises the process taken to simplify 35 ground support standards accounting for the multiple development profiles, dynamic geotechnical environment and the practical safety implications of a large-scale change in the ground control standards. This reduction was required after an incident involving incorrect standards being issued. The subsequent investigation identified that: • Selection of ground support standard for a mining instruction (MI) is not straightforward due to multiple standards, standards not reflecting current reinforcement used and complex geotechnical environment being encountered. Instead, site-specific ground control instructions were being issued. • Ground support standards were hard to follow and confusing, errors were present and not all standards to scale. • Ground support standards being used did not reflect what was being installed, ie bolt type incorrect and mesh orientation different. • No process or tier action response plan (TARP) for operators to follow for ground control standard noncompliance. • No justification for ground support standards being used in the current geotechnical environment. • No process for ground support standard selection and thereby no paper trail to document and assess adequacy of performance. A project was undertaken to reduce and simplify the ground support standards, produce a justification document to support ground support design and develop a process for site practitioners to identify the type of ground support standard required for the mining instruction. The exercise of rationalising the ground support was met with some challenges, including: • Technical aspects to determine the level of demand and the capacity for each ground support scheme. • Training the geotechnical engineers how to determine the level of risk for each area. • Winning over other technical services staff and the underground mining contractor of the new approach and then implementation. One of the major successes was the acceptance by the underground operators who found the system simplified their work and gave them increased confidence in management of seismicity. The rationalised ground support standards have now been successfully in place for over two years.

A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.

Granulation of the iron ore blend and the additives is the foremost step in the agglomeration of iron ore fines to achieve a permeable bed during sintering, which is crucial for sinter productivity. This study investigated the granulation of four types of blends to determine the impact of granulation on bed permeability. The blends were granulated in a rotating drum at various moisture contents and their JPU permeability was measured at each moisture content in a permeability pot (diameter 95 mm and height 500 mm) at various flow rates. Several independent experiments were carried out to investigate the changes in permeability when mixtures of different particle size range (-1 mm and +1 mm) were introduced into a packed bed with a larger particle size range (-6.3 mm to +4.0 mm). The results revealed that the addition of particles in the -1 mm size range had a more pronounced negative impact on permeability compared to particles in the +1 mm size range. This can be attributed to the relatively higher energy losses (mainly inertial) associated with the presence of -1 mm particles in the mixture. The findings were used to quantify the granulation process based on the -1 mm particle size fraction in the granulated mix and their utilisation (denoted by UI-1 mm). For achieving optimal permeability in a specific blend, it was found that a UI-1 mm (utility index of -1 mm particle size) ranging from 0.82 to 0.92 was required. However, exceeding a UI-1 mm value of 0.95 resulted in weaker granules prone to deformation and led to decreased bed permeability. The study also showed that the UI-1 mm was highly dependent on the water addition per kg of -1 mm in dry feed and suggested adding ~80 to 110 mL of water per kg of -1 mm in dry feed to attain the best possible permeability. Additionally, the research proposed a mechanism involving the melting of granules at high temperatures and highlighted the influence of -1 mm particles on bed permeability during the sintering process.

One of the key aspects to develop sustainable metallurgical production is to ensure that the predictive power of thermodynamic tools is brought up to a new level of accuracy and reliability. Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

Flash flotation is a process designed to remove coarse, liberated, fast floating minerals from hydrocyclone underflow. Irrespective of liberation, coarse particles would normally remain in a grinding circuit until they are reground fine enough to report to the hydrocyclone overflow. Additionally, minerals of high density also report to hydrocyclone underflow despite being fine in size and/or liberated because hydrocyclones separate on the characteristics of both particle size and density. Dense particles continually reporting to the hydrocyclone underflow can lead to over-grinding and the production of ultra fine particles. These particles exhibit slow flotation kinetics and thus are difficult to float in conventional flotation circuits. Therefore, removing coarse, liberated particles from the hydrocylcone underflow by flash flotation has the potential to improve recovery and can improve dewatering unit operations and reduce grinding costs.The impact on the overall performance of the flotation circuit by removing coarse, fast floating minerals prior to conventional flotation is not well understood. Ultimately, predicting the overall recovery improvement provides the justification for the installation of a flash flotation cell within the milling circuit. In the past decade mineral deposit models have become an important tool for the exploration geoscientist. By combining genetic theories on the formation of particular deposit styles, with geological, geochemical and geophysical criteria relevant to ore location, it has been possible to more effectively focus exploration effort to the regions and local targets which have the best chance of success. However, such models have their limitations, and must be carefully and critically applied and continually updated as new technical and research information becomes available.

"The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a waste rock remediation program conducted at a gold mine in New South Wales (NSW) over a six-year period. The treatment of waste rock dumps included the longitudinal results of one-off applications using: ViroMine Technology, including the application of a chemical reagent called Terra B, which is a benign, clay-like substance derived from processed bauxite and other sources lime and biosolids (added for nutrient value) clay capping and topsoil compared treatment outcomes from these three approaches to a control.Parameters measured in the program included leachate pH, total actual acidity (TAA) and chromium reducible sulfur (CRS), Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and tree height and vegetative cover density with data collected at regular intervals over a six-year monitoring period. Findings over the life of the study indicated, for example, that leachate pH in the control area was 4.5 in year 1 falling to 4.0 by year 6; pH in the lime and capping treated waste rock was initially raised to about 5.5 after treatment but fell to 5.0 within 24 months and remained a low 4.7 by year 6; pH in the Terra B waste rock was 6.8 in year 1 immediately after treatment, and actually increased to 7.3 by year 6 with no further treatment. This finding is of relevance because it effectively profiles the acidity curves of waste rock control, lime, and capping applications, and shows that they decline over time, despite an initial æpH shockÆ to the solids as measured by TAA and CRS in the case of lime. Similar treatment curves were observed for heavy metal leachates. Tree height and vegetative cover density indicated that with increasing acidity in the waste rock dump, the lime and capping options did not allow healthy revegetation, but in the Terra B treated areas tree growth and density were comparable to background, undisturbed forest levels.is needed with respect to tailings management, based on a novel integrated research framework.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Barros, G, 2012. The need to continue the development of the Ensham mine has led to blast up to 75 m to the Eastern side of a water dam in the vicinity of Ramp 23. The water dam wall is exposed to blasting over a distance of approximately 500 m. The first decision was to determine that the existing rock pillar between the Eastern side of the water dam and the blasting operations may not be less than 75 m in order to minimise the damage that the blast could generate to the dam wall. It was also necessary to define blasting practices to minimising the blast damage to the rock properties of the dam wall and to avoid adverse effects from vibration and gases generated by the detonation on structures.For this purpose analytical designs and test blasts were conducted to assess the ground vibration attenuation within the rock pillar. From this analysis, it was concluded that the best practice to reduce the rock damage was to create a zone of fractured rock adjacent to the side of each production blast. This fractured zone would create an effective filter both for vibration and for gases generated by the blast. This zone of fractured rock was created by firing two buffer rows. In terms of pattern size and powder factor the two buffer rows were designed just to generate a fractured rock zone. To date approximately 500 m have been excavated along the eastern wall of the water dam where each production blast was preceded by a Trim blast. This practice has given good results with regard to minimising the damage generated by production blasting.

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.The evaluation of magnetite deposits involves specialised approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation. The sampling protocol for magnetite deposits will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a mini-pilot plant that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be estimated directly or assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents. For estimation, the concentrate grades are weighted to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries of each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.

Brownfields geoscience measurement such as drilling and surface geophysics can be costly and it is often difficult to weigh the cost of data collection and processing against the value it unlocks at the time of extraction. This makes it difficult to prioritise geoscience expenditure and find the optimum intensity of geoscience activity across competing assets. There are multiple options for managing resource uncertainty and spatial variability through mine planning and resource engineering such as varying marketing strategy, adjusting stockpile or other infrastructure design and product blending. Consideration of these alongside increased data collection further complicates finding a comparable value of geoscience programs to determine the right blend of geoscience measurement and engineering controls. Concepts similar to Value of Information (VOI) analysis which is applied to strategic planning can be used to estimate the value of geoscience measurement and pit sequencing at tactical planning and operational timescales. This involves the quantification of resource uncertainty and prediction of how it will affect resource extraction. This paper outlines this process and demonstrates its use to prioritise geoscience at BHP Coal Assets. The value of infill drill programs in enabling operational stability is quantified and compared the value of engineering controls like increased stockpile capacity. This study supports that idea that the application of VOI methods to bulk mining at tactical time horizons has potential to inform geoscience planning and resource engineering not just separately, but as part of a unified strategy for managing resource uncertainty.

This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.

Mine site rehabilitation generally includes the re-shaping of overburden to create a final landform, manipulation of substrates and subsequent revegetation. Due to the wide range of environmental variables that influence rehabilitation progression, having clearly-stated final land-use goals and ongoing significant contributions to the planning process, from prefeasibility through to mine closure, is essential for achieving stable landforms and sustainable rehabilitated communities. Two examples of rehabilitation processes in the phosphate rich region of North West Queensland are used to illustrate some of the possible benefits of early planning and communication of rehabilitation requirements.Approximately 160 km south of Mount Isa, Incitec Pivot Limited operates a 35 year old open cut mine at Phosphate Hill. Monitoring of rehabilitation areas and selected analogue sites is undertaken annually, but the initial landform design, substrate management and species selection has created a difficult environment for revegetated areas to successfully establish. Constant management input (such as weed management, erosion control, supplementary seeding, etc) will, therefore, be required over a long time frame.The second example uses exploratory drilling and historic costean pits at Legend International HoldingÆs Paradise South site, 135 km north of Mount Isa, to determine the success of natural vegetation colonisation on waste rock and compacted soils, and the effects of cattle grazing on recolonisation. This information can be used by planners of the mine life to inform possible end-land use decisions and proposed completion criteria.In a semi-arid environment such as North West Queensland, the creation of a post-mine landscape suitable for nature conservation and/or grazing can be an arduous task. The input from environmental personnel at all stages of the mining process will positively impact upon the quality of the resulting rehabilitation and ensure undesirable legacy issues are minimised.CITATION:Gillespie, M J and Erskine, P D, 2012. The paper describes the surface chemistry and particle physics that control the fundamental flow properties (Theology) of mineral particle slurries. We further address, through a series of case studies, the design data that emerges from experimental studies of the flow properties of complex, high volume fraction mineral slurries. The case studies are drawn from mineral oxide concentrate processes, tailings dewatering operations and from filter cake production and management. The paper emphasises the essential links between design of process slurry handling systems and the control of the flow of such slurries by control of the pulp chemistry.

The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at 'Ellatzite-Med' Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of 'Ellatzite' flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

The enrichment of magnetite to haematite and haematite-goethite leads to a coincident magnetic low and gravity high within the banded iron formation. Palaeochannel deposits of pisolitic limonite can be expected to provide a relative magnetic high and gravity low in a sinuous geometry. Detrital iron deposits of conglomerate, scree or ‘canga’ might have indistinct magnetic response but will usually have a relative gravity high.These signatures provide clear discriminators detectable by a joint gravity and magnetic survey.The combination of airborne gravity gradiometry and magnetometry is particularly powerful in detecting and discriminating targets, as well as mapping lithologies and structure, across a wide variety of iron ore deposit styles. It provides detection capabilities in a platform capable of rapid, complete coverage with minimal access issues. This approach has been used in FALCON™ airborne surveys for iron ore exploration in the Great Lakes, USA; the Middleback Ranges, South Australia; and the Hamersley Basin, Western Australia.The complex magnetic properties of iron formations (particularly remanence, anisotropy and depth of weathering) prevent this approach from being simple. The use of vector residual magnetic intensity (VRMI), calculated from the measured total magnetic intensity (TMI), assists by reducing the complexity due to the different directions of the remanent and induced magnetic fields.Estimations of the density to magnetisation ratio via the pseudo-lithology calculated from the VRMI and gravity gradients provide a useful method of capturing the discriminatory power of joint magnetic and gravity gradient data.

The perceived and actual impact of government mineral policy upon the government share from gold mining revenues is assessed for ten key countries in which the gold sector is of relevance in advancing economic growth. Five African and five South American jurisdictions are considered, namely Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, South Africa and Tanzania from Africa; and Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guyana and Peru in South America.Both the headline corporate income tax rate and royalty level are identified as poor indicators for the total government share. In addition, significant differences between industry perception and actual government tax levels are identified by this study. The quantitative financial analysis shows that there is no clear relationship between individual taxation rates, taken in isolation, and the overall average effective tax rate (AETR) paid by the project over its life. Neither companies nor governments should use individual taxation rates, or industry perceptions, in isolation to assess the overall competitiveness or equity of a country’s minerals taxation regime – such analysis can be very misleading.In this study, the perceived impact is determined from the well-established Fraser Institute survey published each year, and in 2014 compared 122 minerals jurisdictions globally. The actual impact is determined from quantitative modelling of the financial performance of a hypothetical gold mining project in each country. The technical parameters of the project are held constant; instead the differing mineral policies in each jurisdiction are applied to determine the resultant impact upon the relative share of the economic rents delivered to both private and public sectors. Evaluation of the construction method used for the pedestrian underpass construction at Ipswich Road, Brisbane, Australia is presented in this paper. The pedestrian underpass was constructed through the existing railway embankment between Harrogate and O’Keefe Streets on the eastern side of Ipswich Road. This underpass construction is part of the CLEM7 tunnel project (formerly known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel) which is the longest toll road in Australia at a total length of 6.8 km. The jacked box construction technique was initially identified as a preferred option during the tender and concept design phases. However at the final design stage, the cut and cover technique was selected as this method can reduce the construction time and cost significantly. The design and construction teams effectively managed the challenges, complexities and risks associated with undertaking cut and cover tunnel through the existing heavily utilised rail embankment. The on-site construction time for the underpass using the cut and cover technique was reduced to less than 42 hours.

For some time the-mining industry has been criticised, completely unjustifiably, by certain people who style themselves conservationists but are actually preservationists. The criticism of the mining industry - and indeed all developmental industries has an emotional background and is not supported by facts. Some claims have been so disturbing that the Australian Mining Industry Council considered that the industry should do more in stating its position and attitude than has been done to date. It was therefore decided to request the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (which is a technical organization) to join with it in presenting this seminar so that the subject could be examined on a scientific and factual basis, removed from the pressures of, emotion, and so that the media and the public could be presented with some basic factual data and, I trust, convinced of the soundness of the industry's attitude and policy. Many of the individuals in the mining and metallurgical industry are men who chose mining as a career because the location of mines gives an opportunity normally available only in the more remote areas. "These men do not want to see their countryside despoiled. '-The mining companies they manage and w rk for have accepted a responsibility to the environment which grows out of their close relationship with the earth.

Commonwealth of Australia (2016) defines rehabilitation as comprising “the design and construction of landforms as well as the establishment of sustainable ecosystems or alternative vegetation, depending upon the desired post-operational land use”. For open cut coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales, the question of how to apply this intent to pits at mine closure is repeated for hundreds of individual pits. In EISs, closure plans and public discussion, assorted treatments are proposed to rehabilitate pits. While some aspects of final voids have been intensively studied, there is little guidance on how to choose a final void treatment option that delivers the optimal outcome against rehabilitation goals. For example, in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley commonly proposed rehabilitation actions include reducing the angles of pit walls; however, with few voids successfully rehabilitated to date there is limited understanding of what different wall slopes will achieve.CITATION:Henderson, S and Hocking, A, 2018.
