Western Australian tin deposits are similar to those of other Precam- brian terrains in that they are mainly associated with rare-metal pegmatites, in which cassiterite is found with minerals containing any or all of the elements Ta, Nb, Be, Li, Cs, Rb and the rare earths.. They differ from Phanerozoic deposits where cassiterite occurs in quartz veins, greisens, dis- seminations in granite or sulphide lodes, and is associated with minerals containing W, Mo, Bi, Sb, As, Ag, or Cu. The main tin production in Western Australia has come from the Pilbara Block where the more important tin- bearing pegmatites are related to a younger granite phase, and from Green- bushes where large albite pegmatites intrude ?Proterozoic metamorphic rocks. The more important tin deposits in the Pilbara Block, and those in the Halls Creek and Murchison Provinces, are related to granites which are richer in Si and K and poorer in Ca, Mg, Fe and Ti than 'average granite'. The tin granites tend to have higher than average contents of Sn, Rb and Li.

Salinity in Australia is caused by over irrigation and land clearing for agricultural use over the last 100 years. It is now the biggest threat to the quality of land and water in the Murray Darling Basin and Western Australia. Pumping the saline waters straight into the ocean or transporting the solid residue (mainly sodium chloride) to the ocean after evaporation of the water is expected to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars every year. This paper proposes that the salinity problem of Australia, at least in part, can be converted to an asset rather than a liability if it is exploited and used to make value-added products. The more value made out of saline waters, the more saline water is processed and therefore the more salt is extracted from the land. The value-added products that can be made out of saline waters are numerous and diverse. Rough calculations show that value addition to the saline waters could potentially generate up to $A 200 million per annum business in the Murray-Darling Basin. Although it is a challenge to make cost competitive products and find markets for these products it is possible that up to $A 100 million per year may be gained from import substitution. Value addition to salinity would also reduce the threat on the environment and existing agricultural industry. Investment to add value to salinity will create business in the region, nurture the local small population communities, and increase services and long-term employment.

This paper is a preliminary report of research on the Mount Morgan gold-copper deposit being done at the Division of Mineralogy, CSIRO. Fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope measurements were made on a suite of 11 samples collected by the staff of Geopeko Ltd. This suite contained representatives of the main ore and rock types of the deposit. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions measured on quartz from 8 of the 11 samples, ranged from 172¦C to 276¦C and to this must be added a pressure correction (in this case, up to 50¦C) to obtain the formation temperature of the mineral. Sulphur isotope measurements were made on 34 sulphides from 8 of the 11 samples. The 6S values form a well defined group ranging from -0.5%oto +3.6%owith a mean of +2.4%c. Although the preliminary data do not indicate unequivocally the origin of the deposit they do impose restraints on the wide ranging suggestions that have been put forward. This work is complementary to the paper of Dr G. Gibbons who has described other mineralogical aspects of the Mount Morgan deposit, based on a more extensive suite of Samples.

The zinc-lead-silver mineral resource at Lady Loretta ranks amongst the worldÆs richest when measured in terms of in situ metal grades. However, the project remains undeveloped 28 years after its discovery in 1969. The primary obstacle to development has been the fine and complex grain structure of its ores, which make flotation concentration inefficient even with fine grinding. The size and remote location of the deposit have also hindered exploitation. BUKA planned to directly fume the volatile target metals from the ore when it acquired the project. Intensive, post-acquisition modeling showed the innovative processing route to be uneconomic, notwithstanding high metals recovery and low waste content in fume product. Progressive modifications and supplements to the underlying fuming process enhanced economics and resulted in a new mine-to-metal processing route for zinc-lead-silver ores. The proprietary, three-stage BUKA Zinc Process offers technical, economic and environmental advantages. It is expected to find widespread application in the treatment of ores and residues. However, neither continued R&D nor application to Lady LorettaÆs currently delineated resource can be justified under prevailing market conditions. The objectives and results of each step in the process development sequence are outlined with reference to their impact on the commercial viability of the Lady Loretta project.

Three selected iron ore samples from the major bedded and channel iron deposits of Western Australia were analysed using a scratch test commonly used in the oil and gas industry. The portable commercial equipment dubbed Wombat cuts a groove on the surface of the sample with a cutter under imposed depth of cut and cutting velocity. The normal and tangential components of the force acting on the cutter are recorded with a high degree of precision (about 1N) at fine spatial resolution of about 20 measurements per millimeter.The intrinsic specific energy inferred from the scratch test measurements is found very well correlated with a classical measure of strength such as the uniaxial compressive strength, for over 300 sedimentary rock samples.The results obtained on the iron ore samples are comparable to those obtained on oil and gas sedimentary rocks. This method could provide an objective and semi-automated measurement of material strength and brittleness in iron ores that can possibly be correlated to the lump to fines ratio.

Sustainable closure of coal mines in Australia to a safe, stable, non-polluting condition remains one of the industry’s biggest environmental and social challenges. A significant proportion of mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland have dispersive spoil. Based on an estimated area of 20,000ha and a rehabilitation cost of AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000/ha, the instantaneous rehabilitation liability for the Bowen Basin alone is estimated at AUD$2 to $3 billion.Dispersive spoils present problems in post-mining rehabilitated landforms due to increased potential for surface and tunnel erosion, compromising the ability to achieve fundamental mine closure objectives of a safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining post-mining landform (Minserve, 2004). The estimate of an ore reserve is a vital statement made about a mineral occurrence by an evaluator. It is important that such a statement communicate reality to all groups involved in a mining project, be they technical, financial, company directors, Stock Exchanges or the public. Ore reserve statements should state both resources and recoverable ore reserves. Resources may be important in very long term considerations, (because mining, metallurgical technology and economics change with time) but recoverable reserves are todays reality. The important factors contributing to recoverable reserves (in a general sense) are geology, mining method (and its impact on dilution and ore loss), metallurgical recovery, costs and commodity prices. These all need to be reflected in the ore reserve statement. In this paper recoverable ore reserve concepts across a wide range of orebodies are considered and discussed with respect to geology, mining method and ore reserve calculation procedures.

Sinter plants currently have to use many types of ores with different properties due to the great demand for iron ores, which was driven by the massive growth in Chinese iron and steel industry. On the other hand, the development of iron ore mines is limited and the quality of iron ores is in a tendency of deterioration. Therefore, the quick evaluation of iron ores has become more important for a stable sintering operation. In addition to such a background, the CO2 gas emission should be decreased from sinter plants according to the Kyoto Protocol on reduction in greenhouse gases. The present paper first describes the methods for testing the metallurgical properties of iron ores, which use a small volume of sample mainly focusing on magnetite ore that is effective for reducing CO2 and NOx emissions from sinter plants. The sintering properties of ores are evaluated separately according to each stage in sintering process, that is: heating stage before melt formation, primary melt formation in adhering fines layer of pseudo-particles, and assimilation of nucleus ore particle with calcium-ferrite system melts.Next, the application of the tests to the blending ores is introduced showing examples of the studies on the effective usage of the magnetite ores with Marra Mamba type ores.

"Evaluating the geological risk associated with ore deposits is becoming common practice in the mining industry. While geostatistical simulation is a useful tool for evaluating this risk, the effect of applying different types of simulation is less understood. For simulation of categorical variables like rock types, available methods perform simulation in fundamentally different ways. In this study, the geological risk relevant for informed mine planning is studied with two categorical simulation methods, PluriGaussian Simulation (PGS) and Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS). Risk is expressed as a probability of repeated occurrence of lithological units in the same location across simulations. Significant differences are observed between the methods in terms of spatial distribution of risk. To identify the most plausible risk model, the input parameters at every step of both techniques are scrutinised. PGS and SIS inputs are classified as four parameters that are: fundamental to implementation of the methodfixed to enable comparison of PGS and SISdetermined by user interpretation, hence variablenormally optimised during application of PGS and SIS. The effect of parameter selection from categories 1 and 4 on the risk model is investigated using drill core data from a leucogranite deposit. A corresponding block model is created for assigning outputs from PGS and SIS. Risk models produced by either method are illustrated in a cut-out from the block model to enable bench-by-bench comparison. For PGS, risk associated with relatively rare lithologies is relatively sensitive to variation of parameters. Independent of the abundance of lithology, a location-dependent effect of variogram and vertical proportion curve parameter selection is observed, with risk increasing towards the deposit edge. Although SIS requires fewer inputs, single lithologies must be modelled in turn. Using small numbers of samples in the search neighbourhood, all risk models differ substantially. For larger numbers of samples, the risk models are similar. Overall it appears that the risk model produced using SIS is less sensitive to changes than PGS but further work is required to confirm this.CITATION:Palmer, L W and Glass, H J, 2014. Hoisting ropes are constructed of wires and strands positioned helically around the axis. This helical positioning causes that, in the rope loaded at the end with the weight Q, the longitudinal displacement u, axial force P, torsional displacement v and constant torsional moment M are generated. More over, the proper weight of the rope q gives the force acting along the axis of the rope. This force changes its value from 0 at the bottom to qL at the top. This force gives, along its length, a variable torsional moment making the rope rotate. During the movement of the conveyance downwards the falling part of the rope rotates, which makes it untwist on the section up to the half-depth of the shaft and twist on the other half-depth. As the result, the twisting lay of the rope changes increasing in the upward direction and decreasing downwards. The angle of twist of the strands changes in an apposite way. When moving upwards, the uplifted rope does not twist and retains its state of deformation up to the moment when it passes over the pulley. Next, the cycle of untwisting and twisting repeats during the movement of the other conveyance downwards. This phenomenon is known from mining practice. It was also analysed, in the works of Glushko (1966) and Popowicz (1963).

The earliest suggestions that some metallic ore deposits might have resulted from seafloor volcanic exhalation seem to have been those of Elie de Beaumont in 1847 and Henry de la Beche in 1851. In 1885 Tinoco, and Bouglise and Cumenge, independently investigating-.the manto copper deposits of the Boleo district of Baja California, proposed that these had formed on the seafloor by precipitation from "hydrothermal submarine emanations". Some twenty years later the Japanese geologists Kukuchi and Tsujimoto (1904) put forward the idea that the Kuroko ore- bodies were seafloor volcanic sinter deposits and in 1919 this was re-affirmed by Ohashi. In 1909 the English geologists Thomas and MacAllister postulated a similar origin for some of the gold deposits of Mount Morgan in Queensland. Between the wars the great European economic geologists Niggli and Schneiderhohn both clearly recognized a class of seafloor hydrothermal deposits. The idea rose again immediately after the Second World War in a very clear statement by Hegeman in 1948, which was followed by contributions by Ehrenberg and Kraume and their co-workers on the submarine volcanic origin of the Meggen and Rammelsberg orebodies in 1954 and 1955 respectively. In 1955 the present writer, quite unaware of early or contemporary work on volcanic exhalative ore deposits, proposed a volcanic sedimentary/diagenetic origin for the stratiform base metal ores of SE Australia. In doing so the writer emphasized the probable importance of island arc volcanism, suggested that some "metallogenetic regions" of ancient terrains were in fact old island arc systems, that the composition of the ores might be related to the composition of the associated volcanic rocks and that such ores would be tied to volcanic stratigraphy. Ideas on relations between volcanism and stratiform ore genesis have thus been evolving over.a period of some 140 years and, beginning with the observations on Baja California in 1882, work round the rim of the Pacific has made an important contribution over a period of more than 100 years.

(Quality can be defined as that which is acceptable to the market and can be supplied with a predictable degree of uniformity and dependability at a low cost. The market for any mining product is downstream processing, whether it be an alumina refinery, a gold processing plant or a flotation plant. The cost of that downstream process is partly dependent on uniformity of its feed material both in physical and chemical terms. With more operations adopting procedures which require quality assurances in line with International Standards, from their raw material suppliers, miners must look to their grade control processes to provide uniformity and predicability.This is not a new concept. The mining industry has constantly been working with ahighly variable raw material supplied by Mother Nature, from whom we cannot demand quality assurances. Through the processes of exploration, resource and reserve definition, long and short term mine planning and day to day grade control an end product has been supplied which consistently meets our customers requirements, in an economic fashion. When any of these processes fail, then penalties are incurred which can range from increased mineral processing costs to loss of markets and in the ultimate case, failure of a mining operation.

The composition and volume of geothermal fluids in New Zealand offers considerable potential for the extraction of various metals and minerals, as well as being a source of heat energy, steam and gases, and for use in generating electricity. While extracting products from geothermal fluids is technically feasible, positive economics is the key driver for commercial success; however, there is no assessment of this opportunity that identifies simple, cost-effective processing technologies and provides a greater understanding of the economic viability and barriers for implementing such technologies. The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

Cave mining is of interest to the mining community as it offers a chance to extract large, deep orebodies with low operating costs and high production rates. It allows for extracting large low-grade orebodies, which may not have previously been considered for mining. Cave mining is done either top down (ie sublevel caving) or bottom up (ie block/panel caving). Both approaches rely on gravity, stresses and weakness of the rock to fracture and achieve a controlled collapse.Block caving starts at the base of the orebody. It progresses upward and across through continuous collapse of the roof. To achieve this, a critical hydraulic radius must be exceeded. This is accomplished by blasting drawbells, through which the caved ore passes to the production level. An entire level above the drawbells (undercut level) is excavated to help initiate the cave. The undercut level ensures the connection between drawbells and achievement of the required hydraulic radius.Conventionally, drawbells are generated by drilling and blasting several times from the production level as well as the undercut level. Mucking between each shot is required to generate enough void space for the rock to swell. The need for several blasts necessitates some downtime between each blast. Also, the cost of developing and maintaining the undercut level can constitute up to 35 per cent of the cost of mining the panel.A new blasting technique was developed to create the drawbells in a single blast from the production level. The technique ensures the connection of the drawbell to the neighbouring ones, thus, the critical hydraulic radius is reached and propagation of the cave achieved without the need for the undercut level. The technique has the potential to reduce the capital cost of a block caving operation, increase its feasibility and reduce time to reach the ore and consequently the payback period. The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Middle and Late Cenozoic fluvial conglomerates and gravel in northeastern Southland record the transport of alluvial gold from Central Otago into Southland, and subsequent reworking and concentration of this gold into economic placer deposits. A corridor of geochemically distinctive, Hg-free gold derived ultimately from veins in Torlesse Terrane schist in Otago extends through the Caples Terrane and into Southland. The initial repository in Southland was fluvial sediment of the East Southland Group, specifically weakly auriferous, quartzose delta plain strata of the Gore Lignite Measures (GLM), a downstream equivalent of Dunstan Formation in Central Otago. Miocene uplift along the northwest trending Old Man Range beheaded the parent river system, isolating GLM from its Central Otago source area and establishing the proto-Waikaia River system. Rising topography between Otago and Southland increased fluvial gradients, and initiated erosion of cover strata and a sequence of tectonically induced gold recycling events. Auriferous GLM were recycled from the hinterland into broad braided fluvial channel and floodplain deposits of the Waikaia Group (new), specifically the highly auriferous Waikaka Quartz Gravels and equivalent Waimumu Quartz Gravels downstream (WQG), superimposing more proximal depositional environments over parts of the former GLM delta plain. WQG were deformed, and locally cannibalised during the later stages of their deposition by reverse movement on north-northeast trending faults of the Dunsdale System (NW side up). Increased tempo of uplift in the hinterland (Old Man, Garvie, Umbrella, and Blue Mountain Ranges) in the Pliocene and early Quaternary resulted in further reworking of GLM and WkQG from the hinterland as well as basement erosion. Progressively more basement-rich detritus was deposited as a locally auriferous piedmont (Gore Piedmont Gravels - GPG) over earlier channel and delta plain (GLM, WQG) strata, extending from the Blue Mountains to Waikaia, and southward through the Gore Gap to beyond Mataura. Southward propagation of the north-northeast trending ranges, local warping, and uplift of the Murihiku Terrane in Pliocene and Quaternary progressively deflected GPG fluvial systems and ultimately constrained them to the present valleys. Pre-existing auriferous strata (GLM, WQG, GPG) were reworked and deposited with or without basement detritus as these fluvial systems migrated toward their present positions. Auriferous remnants of these transitional deposits are preserved in local structural depressions on the uplifted blocks that deflected the systems (eg King Solomon Mine), and on locally abandoned floodplain segments on the lowlands (Pebbly Hills-Gore Gap). The present drainage has continued to incise and cannibalise its own and earlier deposits during late Pleistocene-Recent uplift to form confined channel placers within the present valleys.

The Norman B Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, or the Department of Mining Engineering (the Department), at CanadaÆs University of British Columbia (UBC) is addressing the integration of sustainable development concepts into mining education and research on behalf of industry and society. Over the past decade, the DepartmentÆs education and research model has been evolving to incorporate collaborative and multidisciplinary strategies, where sustainability initiatives are taught in classes, supported in research and discussed in a voluntary collective of mostly graduate students û the Sustainability Working Group (SWG). The SWG has brought together a diverse array of disciplines from academia, industry, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and mining communities. The operational mechanisms and structure of the SWG have enabled momentum to be gained through several multidisciplinary educational and research networking initiatives. It acts to attract new students with diverse backgrounds, foster innovative research, develop relationships and networks, and create the space to discuss progressive ideas and projects. The original cohort of SWG graduate students laid the foundation for sustainable research initiatives within the Department at UBC. Novel research has incorporated topics such as: community resilience, artisanal small-scale mining, sustainability indicators and corporate social responsibility, environmental assessment and impact benefit agreements and the recycling of waste. Propelled by the support of the Department and inspired by the works completed, a host of new graduate students have embarked on their research quests to integrate sustainability principles into their projects. Such projects include: social impacts and benefits of mining, artisanal small-scale mining, community health, the production and transport of mine pollutants, mine waste management, mineral process plant design and the evolution of community education and mine policy. This paper reports on the departmentÆs continuing research and development towards an understanding and evaluations of the ongoing contributions of mining to sustainable development.

Over the past five years, commodity prices have been high and the focus of many plants has been æthe more metal the better, at whatever costÆ. In the recent economic crisis, the focus has shifted more to reducing the cost of production and operating at higher efficiency. Since 2002, JKTech has partnered with the Century mine in north-west Queensland to transfer technology and understanding through the good, bad and ugly economic environments, using methodology and techniques arising from research at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and other research institutions around the world as part of the AMIRA International P9 Project. The JKTech studies were concentrated around the primary zinc circuit. During this period, Century expanded the primary zinc regrind capacity, installed additional scavenging capacity, installed and commissioned a Jameson cell for concentrate cleaning in the carbon preflotation circuit, and installed additional primary grinding capacity. Flotation circuit models were developed for each of the survey campaigns and enabled opportunities for further improvement to be identified, implemented and tested in the subsequent campaign.
