The Manto Verde copper mine (Atacama Region, Chile) is due to go into production in 1996. It will produce 40 000 tonne/year of copper cathode by heap leaching/SX-EW. Mineralogical studies were undertaken in conjunction with the metallurgical testwork program to characterise the ore and its response to leaching by dilute sulphuric acid. The leachable copper mineralogy is dominated by the oxide copper minerals: brochantite and malachite with minor chrysocolla and atacamite. The gangue minerals include abundant orthoclase, specularite, quartz and chlorite with minor muscovite and trace smectite clay, calcite and limonite. The study showed that complete or partial decomposition of calcite, chlorite, smectite and wad consumed acid and generated solution impurities (Ca2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, A13+, K+, Si4+ and Mn4+2+ ). Although these were manageable at Manto Verde, their uncontrolled build-up could have affected the operation in several ways: the degradation of heap penneability and fonnation of crud in the SX plant from the precipitation of gypsum, goethite, colloidal silica and jarosite; and the entrainment of contaminated pregnant leach solution in the SX organic resulting in the transfer of impurities to the electrolyte and subsequent effects on cathode quality and electrowinning efficiency. In conclusion, process mineralogy played an important role in understanding and managing potential mineral-related problems in the heap leaching and SX-EW recovery of Manto Verde ore.

Conventional polygonal and block modelling techniques inadequately represent the grade-thickness distribution of some narrow shear and stratabound gold deposits. The polygonal influence of high-grade drill intercepts can result in overestimates of resource tonnages at high-grade cut-offs. Although block modelling methods provide grade smoothing and a better representation of structural continuity, the technique can lack precise definition of ore width. An alternative method known as Spatial Object Modelling (SOM) has been developed on MineMap software to overcome some of these modelling issues. This method does not rely on a uniform cell size and allows grade smoothing between resource intercepts in three-dimensional space. The SOM technique creates grade-thickness bars on regular, user-defined spacings which allow easy visual comparison of raw intercept data to the interpolated model. Model cell values are readily transformed into isopachs, isopleths and resource perimeters for reporting and mine planning purposes.

Recent development at Strongman 2 Mine has seen the use of high pressure monitors to cut coal and a corresponding increase in the scale of production.This paper provides a brief introduction to hydraulic mining, describes the present system used at Strongman 2 and discusses future potential development.

Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at the intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from the deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along the margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

A number of ideal detonation codes are used internationally for estimating the strength of explosives compositions. Important and far reaching decisions by explosives users are ofen based on the predictions of these codes, but since different codes can deliver very different answers for the same composition, there is a strong possibility of decision makers being misled. In order to both provide a sensible basis for comparing the theoretical energy from explosives from different manufacturers and to prevent the entire rating system from slipping into disrepute, it is in the interests of all to reach agreement on fundamental criteria used by detonation codes for detemtining strength. The problem is illustrated by a case history and basic conventions are proposed, specifically the adoption of energy of reaction as a fundamental and code independent indicator of explosive energy, and agreement on disclosure by suppliers of key non-proprietary information. These measures would assist explosives customers in assessing the true strengths of explosives from the strengths calculated by the different ideal Codes.

Whereas traditionally, stable isotope research has been directed towards resource exploration and development, it is finding more frequentapplications in helping to assess the impacts of resource utilization upon ecosystems. Among the many pursuits, two themes are evident:(1) tracing the transport and conversions of pollutants in the environment and(2) better understanding of the interplay among environmental receptors, e.g. food web studies. Stable isotope data are used primarily to identify the presence of pollutants in the environment and with a few exceptions, the consequence of their presence must be assessed by other techniques. Increasing attention has been given to the isotopic composition of humans with many potential applications in areas such as paleodiets, medicine, and criminology. In this brief overview examples are used from the Pacific Rim to illustrate the above concepts. Stable isotope data will undoubtedly play an increasing role in multi-disciplinary research in the Pacific Rim. However, consideration should be given to more effective strategies, e.g. networking, for pursuing large scale problems such as long range circulation of pollutants.

Draglines have been used exclusively for primary overburden stripping at the German Creek Mine complex in central Queensland, where coal has been extracted from a series of ten open cut pits working seams of the German Creek Coal Measures. Due to the dip of the seams, most of the pits have now reached the limit of current economic viability and the emphasis has switched to underground extraction using longwall methods and to a new area of open cut reserves in the nearby Rangal Coal Measures at German Creek East. This area is characterised by weak Tertiary overburden, relatively steep dips and low strength intraformational shear planes at the top and bottom of the coal.The first pit, with a maximum depth to coal of 15 m at the low wall, avoided any major slope failure through use of scrapers to excavate the boxcut and dump the spoil away from the low wall. However, this method was not considered economically viable for the second pit where low wall depths reached 44 m. Following geotechnical investigations the boxcut was divided into a number of zones depending on depth of cover, dip and thickness of Tertiary clay. Slope stability was assessed for each zone using several analytical techniques to ensure that dragline mining would be acceptable. Slope design parameters incorporating various stabilisation techniques, notably an updip trench backfilled with competent spoil to form a low wall buttress prior to excavation of the boxcut panel, were successfully integrated into the mine plan after careful consideration of the complex scheduling to minimise rehandle.

Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.

A co-operative research project, combining Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research scientists findings and company iron ore geologists' expertise, resulted in new concepts about the origins, distribution and complexitie of iron ores and their parent rocks (banded iron-formation or BIF) in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Understanding these problems was important to the efficiency of exploration, development and ultimate mining of iron ores. This genetic model, based on a detailed mineralogic background, was modified by Mt Newman geologists to obtain a user oriented classification for practical application in the field.The proposed Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) gives iron ore geologists a basis from which to understand, identify and record the various mineralogic and physical characteristics of the many genetically different ore types occurring within and between orebodies in the Pilbara. More definitive quality control over ore products can be achieved based on the detailed understanding of ore types which the PIOC allows, compared to current classifications which deal only with the physical nature of ores. Of equal importance, the classification remains sufficiently simple to enable owners, operators and buyers to achieve a basic appreciation of ore type variations.With little modification, it is believed the classification has applications beyond the Pilbara, to iron ore worldwide.

Exploration for uranium in Australia commenced only during the 1940s, but in this short period has been very successful as one third of the world's low cost uranium reserves have been discovered in Australia. Total uranium exploration expenditure in Australia up to the end of 1983 was $A(1983) 554 million; this discovered 20 potentially economic deposits and official reserves of 560 000 tonnes of uranium oxide at an average cost of $1 per kg of U 0 . An exponential 8 eserves indicates distribution of uranium r that there could be 54 undiscovered uranium deposits in Australia, each with reserves of 20 000 tonnes U308 or more, in addition to smaller deposits. Using a constant uranium price of $A(1983) 79 per kg, no deposit is economic at a grade below 0.12 per cent U 08 or with reserves of less than 3 000 tonnes. Selecting deposits with reserves of 5 000 tonnes U 0g or more as prime exploration targets, only 39 per cent of discoveries will yield a real internal rate of return (IRR) of 10 per cent or more. After committing a minimum exploration budget of $10 million to this search, an explorer has one chance between 7 and 12 of discovering a deposit that will repay the exploration investment.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

It has been identified that particulate matter in the form of suspended solids and bed load has the ability to adsorb heavy metals. Each year Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd (RUM) identifies potential danger areas which could become major sediment sources during the wet season. Methods of suppressing sediment uptake such as hydromulching and coating areas with Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA) glue are used. Other methods of reducing the sediment load after uptake such as diversion bunds, filters across drains, stone filters, minor sumps and settling ponds are also used. The 1983/84 wet season saw drain sediment loads reduced to acceptable levels before the water reached the outside environment. Studies to qualify and quantify flows from minor drains are still underway.

From the ventilation aspect, there is a basic difference between advancing and ezreating longwall layouts. Particular rroblems with retreating, using differing mining methods and layouts include high gas emissions, spontaneous combustion and -radients. There is an acceptable method of crntrolling the environment at the return end a retreating longwall face without the use a multiple heading system. Incorporated in the design is the facility to practice xtensive methane drainage, thus ensuring a ntrol of the rate of methane emission into the main roadways. IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. The mechanism and rate-limiting step of carbonaceous reduction of zinc from slags was investigated in the laboratory. Disks of graphite were rotated in ZnO-containing slags at various speeds for fixed periods at 1250 to 1325¦C. The mass loss was used as a measure of the amount of ZnO reduced. Application of the Levich equation indicated that at rotation speeds at which it is valid, the reduction was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 27 kcal/mol. At zero rotation speed the reduction of ZnO by carbon appeared to be slag-phase mass transfer controlled with an activation energy of 38 kcal/mol. An increase in the FeO content of the slag increased the rate of reduction while an increase in sulphur content decreased the rate of reduction. When FeO was present in the slag, reduction appeared to occur by a combination of indirect reduction of ZnO by carbon and by reduction by FeO with reduction of Fe203 back to FeO by carbon. The effect of sulphur was consistent with a surface blockage mechanism due to the surface active nature of sulphur in slags.

The Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline form a chrono- stratigraphic sequence of mainly greenschist- and amphibolite-grade shallow-marine to supratidal pelites, psammites, carbonate rocks, and volcaniclastics which in places rests unconformably on Archaean basement. Granite and later dolerite intrude the sequence, and are associated with the major orogenic 1800-m.y. event which regionally metamorphosed the sediments. Most mineralisation is stratabound, and can be related at least partly to volcanic activity. Uranium mineralisation is mainly confined to particular carbonate-rich horizons near basement. Other metals are mainly in small hydrothermal deposits near intrusive granite. Specialist studies indicate that uranium was leached from its source rock, and probably carried as carbonate complexes in highly saline fluids at between 100 and 3500 C. Precipitation took place by redox reactions in breccia zones in carbonate rocks; these zones were formed by carbonate solution or diapiric movement of evaporites which preceded the carbonate. Extensive chloritisation in the ore zones suggests metasomatism by Fe- and Mg-rich fluids which may have evolved during dewatering of the evaporites. Underground production from the low grade copper orebodies at Mount Lyell in recent years has involved surface subsidence of open cut areas. Relevant structural and lithological features of the geological environment are des- cribed. The highly mechanised underground mining system involves sublevel caving and sub- level open stoping with associated hangingwall cave. Monitoring of subsidence and caving has been made by regular visual inspection and measurement of crack development, and by sur- face profile surveys. These simple techniques have proved adequate in assuring management that ground movement is proceeding normally and safely.

In the stability assessment of open pit walls, geotechnical engineers have to deal with uncertainty related to structural geology, rock mechanical parameters, groundwater and so on. This uncertainty will immediately and significantly impact on wall stability assessment and therefore. influence mineral recovery and ultimately the financial return of open pit mining. However, the conventional factor of safety applied to measure the stability of slopes and the relevant analytical computer packages cannot quantitatively consider the variability or uncertainty of the input data. As a supplement, therefore, geotechnical engineers have begun to apply probability to the stability assessment of open pit walls over the last two decades. To-date unfortunately, no powerful computer package is available to geotechnical engineers to conduct the probability analysis of slope stability. This paper presents a computer package of probability analysis for rock and soil slope stability. In this computer package, the strength parameters of rock and/or soil material such as cohesion, friction angle and unit weight of the different rock and/or soil type domain in a complex structural geology environment can be considered as the basic input random variables. Groundwater level can also be taken into account as a random variable in this package. Two `rigorous' limit equilibrium solutions, the Morgenstern/Price method and the Sarma method, can be used to calculate the factor of safety during Monte Carlo Simulation applied in this program. Five types of probability distribution are included in this package for the user to simulate basic input random variables. Two realistic cases from BHP Iron Ore are used to illustrate this package.

Pyrite and Cu-concentrate were roasted in vertically suspended state in an externally heated tube. Tubes of three different lengths of reaction zone were used for three different reaction times. Roasted ores were submitted to chemical analysis and the extent of roasting reactions was determined. In case of pyrite, extent of roasting reactions was not affected much by reactor length and heating temperature (above 500¦C), but was considerably by ore/air ratio. Micro- scopic and XMA examinations led to the conclus- ion that pyrite particles decomposed to pyrrho- tite and then pyrrhotite was oxidized to give Fe-S-0 melt, magnetite and hematite. The extent of reaction was not uniform in all particles but had a wide distribution from unreacted pyrite to completely oxidized particles. Combustion of Cu-concentrate from Kuroko complex sulfide ore ) was unstable under a uniform wall temperature of 450¦C, but proceed- ed rapidly at temperatures above 500¦C. Sticking of roasted ores to the wall of the reaction tube induced choking of the tube, caused by melting of roasted ores, at tempera- tures above 950¦C. Enrichment of oxygen exterted less influence on reaction rate than heating temperature of the tube. Particle size of ore had a big effect on reaction rate.
