This paper describes the possibility of the application of flotation to the separation of monazite from xenotime and of columbite from ferberite, which have been said to be difficult with generally used physical beneficiation methods. For Malaysian monazite and xenotime samples, a great difference is observed between the flotation recoveries at pH 7.5 using 1.0 x 10-4mol/1 dodecylammonium chloride (DAC). The grade and recovery of columbite in the binary flotation with both minerals result in 85 per cent and 67 per cent in the cleaning froth and 91 per cent and 51 per cent in the re-cleaning froth, without adding any scavenging stages. For monazite samples from various localities, the flotability is dominated by the electrostatic interaction between mineral surface and collector ion using DAC as collector, but the singular decrease of flotation is observed in the sample of which the crystallinity is low and the surface structure is rugged and complex. Otherwise, ferric ion in the flotation system probably dissolved from mineral is found to activate the flotation using sodium dodecylsulfate as collector. For columbite and ferberite, the separation is judged possible at pH 3.0 using 1.0 x 10'3mo1/l sodium oleate (NaOl) from the single flotation results of each mineral. In the binary flotation, however, columbite recovery in the froth is greatly diminished below that expected. This would be because NaOl is prevented from adsorbing on the columbite surface of which the charge is transformed more negative side by the specific adsorption of the tungstate ion dissolved from ferberite.

The installation of a final cleaning column at Ok Tedi Mining Limited was carried out to increase final concentrate grade in order to reduce concentrate handling, shipping and treatment charges and to reduce penalty payments. To fast-track the project a decision was made to install a full-size column on one of the two parallel circuits, designed on information readily available and utilising the experience of mill staff and an engineering consultant, rather than delay installation while a pilot scale program was conducted. A 3.66 m diameter by 12.8 m high column was installed to produce 40 t/h of final concentrate from a combination of rougher concentrate and recleaner concentrate. The column design and sparger system were by Cominco Engineering Services Limited.

Collector and frother molecules in sulfide mineral flotation are thought to have separate roles in the flotation process, where the collector selectively hydrophobizes the mineral surface and the frother adsorbs onto the bubble surface, inhibiting bubble coalescence. Molecular interactions have been observed between these molecules which allow them to co-adsorb at each of the respective interfaces, improving pulp phase recovery. This study investigated the molecular interactions between sodium diethyl dithiophosphate (SDEDTP) and hexanol, and the mechanism by which these interactions improve the recovery of galena. In this study each of the respective interfaces were investigated for the adsorption of SDEDTP. The adsorption of SDEDTP on galena was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry. At the air-water interface foam stability and pulp bubble coalescence was used to quantitatively discern if there are interactions between SDEDTP and hexanol. Microflotation and induction time experiments were performed to determine the effect of SDEDTP, hexanol and their mixtures on mineral recovery and bubble-particle attachment. The results of all these tests were collated to determine if SDEDTP-hexanol mixtures synergistically improve sulfide mineral recovery. It was found that SDEDTP reduced bubble coalescence in the pulp demonstrating activity at the airwater interface. Together SDEDTP and hexanol synergistically enhanced foam stability. This indicated that there are attractive molecular interactions between these reagents. Even though DTP did not adsorb onto galena, DTP-frother mixtures synergistically improved the recovery and attachment probability of this mineral. Adsorption studies with aeration showed that DTP in the presence of a frother transfers from the air-water interface to the galena mineral-water interface during bubble-particle collision. It was proposed that the transfer of hexanol through the thin film enhanced the kinetics of film thinning between the bubble and the particle by destabilising the thin film thus improving pulp phase mineral recovery.

In this paper, the kinetics of iron precipitation as sodium jarosite from aqueous solution is investigated. The determination of the reaction mechanism is attempted based on the experimental data of iron removal as a function of time, without using the characteristics of the precipitate.Experiments at the temperature range from 50° to 95°C were carried out with initial conditions of iron concentration IQ g/L, sodium sulphate concentration 25.44 g/L, sulphuric acid concentration 3.68 g/L, pH = 1.5 and agitation rate 600 rpm. Temperature greatly and positively influences iron precipitation from the solution and this is accompanied by pH decrease. The activation energy was determined using the maximum values of the precipitation rate, which were evaluated by polynomial fitting of the sigmoidal shape experimental curves, and it was found to be 44.37 kcallmole. The determination of the rate-controll ing mechanism was based on some criteria used for the discrimination among the three probable mechanisms of precipitation (diffusion, mononuclear nucleation, polynuclear nucleation). These criteria utilise various funetions of the recovery 'a' of iron precipitated versus time, the most important of which are the chronomals. The results of the kinetic analysis procedure showed that the polynuclear nucleation growth mechanism controls the precipitation of iron as sodium jarosite. This was confirmed by the high value of activation energy, excluding diffusion as the controlling mechanism.

In many operations the use of less electrochemically reactive grinding media in the first grinding stage (for example, rod milling and high aspect ratio SAG milling) is rarely considered. Therefore, in reality a plant may inadvertently be using a 'mixed' media charge. That is, whilst employing inert grinding media during secondary grinding, electrochemically active forged steel grinding media may be used in the primary grinding stage. This paper discusses the impact of such a circuit on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a refractory gold ore. The Wiluna concentrator has two grinding circuits operating in parallel. Line 1 operates a single ball mill in closed circuit with cyclones, and utilises high chrome grinding media, while the second circuit (Line 2) consists of a rod mill (with forged steel rods) in series with a ball mill, which also utilises high chrome grinding media. The cyclone overflows from both circuits are combined to feed a sulfide flotation circuit. Pulp chemistry surveys were completed around both grinding circuits, and laboratory flotation tests were conducted on the cyclone overflows. The results demonstrate clearly that the rod mill/ball mill circuit operated at significantly lower Eh and dissolved oxygen values, while the percentage EDTA extractable iron was considerably higher, when compared to the single stage ball milling circuit. These variations in pulp chemistry had a marked negative impact on the laboratory rougher flotation response, and suggests that plant performance may be affected.

Alcoa of Australia's Del Park mining op eration is centred 9 km. east of the Pinjarra alumina refinery, and is centrally locatedwith- in the 10, 000 sq. km. lease which the Company holds for bauxite in the Darling Ranges. An- other mining operation is situated near the township of Jarrahdale, and supplies bauxite to the Kwinana refinery. Definition of the bauxite ore, development works and mining to the ore haulage stage, are identical for both mining operations. Exper- ience, and production cost figures, obtained from the Jarrahdale mine, where 100 tonne trucks are used to haul ore to a fixed crushing plant, led to the development of the Del Park mining concept with increased mobility of op- erations. The crushing-conveying-stockpiling arrangement at Del Park consists of a 1200 t. p. h. mobile crusher feeding bauxite to an overland conveyor system which transports the ore approximately 6. 66 km. to the stockpile area in the refinery. In the refinery raw mat- erials area the bauxite is distributed into 200, 000 tonne stockpiles by means of a travel- ling boom stacker.

Since the mid 1950s, limonite deposits of a new type have been found in the northwest of Western Australia. The deposits consist of extensive fossil valley fillings up to several hundred feet in depth, of medium to high grade limonite, frequently containing limonitized fossil wood, and of Mesozoic or Tertiary age. The distribution of the deposits is closely linked with hilly outcrops of Archaean and Proterozoic jaspilite in the headwaters of the old valleys, from which the iron has been derived by leaching, and presumably re-precipitated by a process not unlike that which operates in forming bog iron deposits. Due to the relative resistance of tlie limonite to erosion, the rejuvenation of streams in the area in recent times has left limonitic remnants as mesas up to· several hundred feet above the levels of the present creeks, the courses of which generally are adjacent to or within a few miles of those of the old limonite filled valleys.The Robe River limonite deposits are the largest of this type known and can be traced for approximately 130 miles along the old stream, over 30 sq. miles of limonite remnants remaining at the present time.The present quantity of limonite in this system alone is probably in excess of 5,000,000,000 tons, and the original quantity must have exceeded four times this tonnage when allowance is made for erosion.Some thousands of millions of tons of this material contain in excess of 54 per cent Fe, with approximately 10 per cent combined water. The chief impurities are SiO2 and Al2O3, and minor elements are not present in objectionable amounts. A portion of these deposits was extensively tested by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (the B.H.P. Co. Ltd.) during 1962-1964. Most of the data presented in this paper are based on the work done on these deposits which are typical of those discussed. The overall problem of the origin of the limonite is discussed. It is apparent that the limonite originates from the jaspilitesof Archaean and Proterozoic age which form the highlands at the upstream ends of the deposits. Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is a sub-level caving operation located in north-west Queensland, Australia. Located below a previously mined open pit, the underground operation ramped up production to 6.8Mt/a in 2017. The EHM ore body dips at 45 degrees to the South and therefore requires each level to “step out” from the level above as seen in Figure 1. Within this step out zone it is important to both maximise recovery and allow for efficient operation of the underground workings production to bring the level up to full production as quickly as possible. Throughout the step out design process, a combination of further defining the ore boundary, using lessons learnt from production performance on upper levels and the introduction of design improvements, has reduced the production ramp-up time, decreased costs and increased recovery for a single level at EHM. The leaching of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide solutions may be reduced significantly by the passivation of the gold by a surface layer of polymeric aurocyanide. This passivation of the gold is typically countered by the presence of Pb(+2) species in solution, which may be present as an impurity in the solution, or specifically added for this purpose. The speciation and availability of Pb(+2) in typical cyanide leach solutions is illustrated as a function of pH, and the presence of S(-2), S(+6), Cu(+1) and Ag(+1) species. The probable role of the Pb(+2) species in efficient gold leaching is discussed.

The phosphatic overburden of Christmas Island is a lateritic soil and consists dominantly of crandallite and millisite. These minerals are polymorphs of general formula, (Na,K)x Ca2-x (Al, Fe)6 (PO4)4 (OH)10-x (2+x) H2O. Iron occurs only in millisite. Both minerals exhibit similar thermal transformations, dehydroxylating near 600¦C and recrystallizing above 800¦C. Dehydroxylation results in crystal structure collapse but retention of crystal morphology. Ggethite, boehmite and apatite are minor constituents of some-of the phosphatic Soils.

The Effluent Treatment System at Pasminco Metals - EZ (PMEZ) was commissioned in December, 1991 and has operated satisfactorily, ensuring that aqueous discharges from PMEZ comply with the Tasmanian Environment Protection Act. The system treats both spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant, and acidic liquor generated in the gas cleaning section of the Sulphuric Acid Plant. The spills and run-off from the Zinc Plant are collected in a large catchment pond. The pond liquor, after partial neutralisation with sodium hydroxide to pH 4, and removal of suspended solids, is preferentially recycled to the Zinc Plant, for example, for washing of residues. Liquor which cannot be recycled, is treated in the Lime Neutralisation Section. The other input to the Lime Neutralisation Section is the acidic liquor from the Sulphuric Acid Plant from which mercury has been removed by contact with aluminium pellets in a fluidised column. In the Lime Neutralisation Section, the liquors are blended and neutralised to pH 10 by the addition of slaked lime. The heavy metals and most of the fluorine are precipitated. The precipitated solids are removed in a thickener with part of the thickener underflow being filtered. Most of the thickener underflow is recycled to generate solids that settle rapidly and filter well. The filter cake is returned to the Zinc Plant for the recovery of contained heavy metals while the thickener overflow is discharged to the Derwent River.

Since pyrite is a semiconductor, the relationship between the leaching rate and the semiconducting properties is of interest. In order to investigate this relationship, a pyrite concentrate (95% FeS2) was oxidized at 90¦C (363 K) in an acid solution containing 100 g/dm3 H2SO4 and 1.0 to 25.1 g/dm3 total Fe. The suspension potential (Pt vs. SCE) was maintained at the desired values, within the range 0.40 to 0.70 V, by controlled additions of a KMn04 solution during leaching. The results were analyzed using a simplified kinetic expression. The rate constant was independent of the Fe concentration, while it increased with suspension potential. Partly oxidized samples were then prepared at varying fractions of reaction. After removing the elemental sulphur formed, they underwent thermoelectric power measurements using a packed bed lying in a temperature gradient. The value of thermo- electric power increased from about 0 to 30 pV/K in the early stages of oxidation. The results obtained are compared with those for chalco- pyrite reported in a previous paper.

The recovery of phosphate minerals from the Mt Weld deposit by froth flotation has been studied by many researchers. Most of the flotation experiments were carried out with a tall oil fatty acid as collector and sodium silicate as dispersant and gangue depressant at pH about 10. Several rougher stages and cleaner stages and, sometimes, a desliming stage were included. The major difficulty was to reduce the Fe2O3 impurities in the concentrate to the required level. We used QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscopy) to provide a comprehensive and accurate mineralogical analysis of the flotation products. The analysis indicated that the Fe2O3 impurities were mainly recovered in the second concentrate, owing partly to the incomplete depression of the liberated iron oxides by the sodium silicate and partly to composite particles containing iron oxides. The selective depressing action of sodium silicate was improved by adjusting the variables such as the modulus (SiO2/Na2O), pH and time of standing of the stock sodium silicate solutions or by adding some polyvalent metal salts into sodium silicate solution. The flotation process was optimised to produce a phosphate concentrate with the required grade and recovery (38.6 per cent P2O5, 2.67 per cent Fe2O3, 13.7 for P2O5/(Fe2O3 + A1203), at P2O5 recovery of 81.5 per cent). The possibility of recovering the rare-earth phosphate, monazite, from the Mt Weld deposit by flotation was also studied.

AustraliaÆs record-breaking drought, efforts towards environmental best practice and the current commodities boom is demanding water use and reuse as never before. Mining practices, processing, the remote communities and support industries require vast amounts of specific quality water. Sustainability of water use has been a key factor in mine development, expansion of existing operations and increasing profitability of processes involving water. Developments in water treatment technology have enabled the use of a range of processes to produce this water reliably at ever decreasing costs. This increasing acceptance of new technologies has seen seawater desalination, recycling of plant wastewater streams, municipal wastewater reuse and others to become commonplace. Processes including seawater and groundwater reverse osmosis (RO), low pH RO, thermal desalination, high rate clarification, brine water treatment, ion exchange and other advanced treatment technologies are now used as part of mining operations. This paper surveys the trends in water treatment for the mining industry both in Australia and internationally with a review of technologies and case studies of operating plants. The key technologies are explained with an emphasis on the specific requirements for mining operations û unusual raw water, process and operations limitations, environmental concerns, as well as harsh climate. Case study information from several mining operations is included.

Testwork carried out in the cooling water circuit at the Yabulu treatment plant of the Greenvale Joint Venturers (Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated) since 1980 has resulted in significant improvements to both fouling and corrosion control. At the same time corrosion inhibitor costs have been reduced.Acrylate-type silt dispersants were identified as the most effective means of sediment control in the circuit. An increase in the cathodic component of the corrosion inhibitor coupled with a relatively minor adjustment to water pH has yielded a two to three fold reduction in corrosion rate. It has been established that these lower corrosion rates can be sustained in the face of a 20% reduction in corrosion inhibitor addition rate. Further improvements are indicated with a change of raw water algicide.

The past 100 years the mining industry can be characterised by a focus on increasing financial returns often to the detriment of social, human, manufactured and environmental capitals. Despite the sustainable development principles promoted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Equator Principles and the African Mining Vision, which should have enhanced project promoters’ ‘licence to operate’ within a host community or nation, the industry has often failed to integrate proven innovations and best practices that enhance sustainability outcomes for mineral resource projects. This failure has led to delays, the abandonment of projects, with value destroyed for promoters, governments, host community and investors.The paper will outline the application of proven innovations, Enterprise Optimisation (EO), and Sustainable Operations (SUSOP®), during the pre-feasibility phase of a project. By determining the value of each capital before and after the application of proven innovations, the presentation will outline how and where value can be created across all five capitals over the life of a project or operation.The paper will demonstrate how the application of proven innovations significantly transforms the value-proposition of a mineral resource project or operation by generating additional value across all of the five capitals, reducing project risk, thus generating value for all stakeholders.CITATION:Jones, M, 2015. Two major issues are to be addressed in the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The first of these is the need to increase concentrator flotation capacity to increase copper recovery, while the second is the need to reduce the iron sulphide dilution to meet future smelting requirements. Extra capacity in the cleaner and retreatment sections of the concentrator have been identified as key target areas, with additional copper recovery of at least one per cent identified from plant trials. Extensive pilot plant tests have been undertaken to evaluate the performance of the Jameson cell compared to conventional mechanical cell and column circuits. This work has shown that Jameson cells present an opportunity to achieve the desired grade and capacity specifications at lower capital cost than available alternatives. This paper outlines metallurgical results of work undertaken in the Copper Concentrator, together with a summary of pertinent Jameson cell operating parameters investigated during the period.

Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile has been conducting detailed assessments investigating value adding options for their asset. The mine has conducted several detailed Mine-to- Mill and Grade Engineering studies to investigate increased throughput and head grade and to quantifying the impact of these approaches across the life of mine. CRC ORE has two key technologies namely Grade Engineering and the Integrated Extraction Simulator. These two technology suites have been combined to understand the technological landscape and associated value drivers suitable for application at Los Bronces. Detailed ore characterisation test work was conducted to:  measure and spatially model the propensity of ores to naturally deport and  develop customised blast models for Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering evaluation The outputs of this work were utilised to develop a block model populated with a range on new Grade Engineering and blasting parameters suitable for scenario analysis. To facilitate scenario analysis a high-fidelity value chain model of the Los Bronces operation from blasting to concentrate production was built in IES. IES was combined with sophisticated analytical tools such as Neural Networks to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model made it possible to simulate in IES all available blocks in the block model to predict throughput and grade changes for different strategic scenarios. The scenario analysis was run across 24 strategic combinations of Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering and comprised several million simulations. The scenarios investigated each technology independently and jointly to provide an attributed block model that can feed forward into technoeconomic modelling to determine optimal execution strategies for the mine. This paper presents the first published study combining Grade Engineering and IES to provide mass simulation capability to investigate strategic options for a mining asset.

The Matakan Unit of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea is a highly fossiliferous lagoonal deposit containing numerous coal pods and lenses. The unit is strati graphically part of the massive reefal Lelet Limestone of Miocence age. These organic-rich sediments have a high hydrocarbon potential as evident from microscopical observations as well as Rock- Eval pyrolysis data. The coal is varied in regard to dominant macerals, vitrinite being predominant in some parts and pollen and spores present in sufficient proportions to constitute a cannel coal elsewhere. The highly fossiliferous carbonaceous sedimentary rocks associated with the coal are rich in pyrite expressed in the sulphur content (19.7 - 22.8%). A high primary productivity and anoxic sediment pore waters or just above sediment - water interface have given rise to sufficient organic matter accumulations to yield a potential hydrocarbon source rock. Atomic H/C ratios of the coals are between kerogen type III and type II mainly, expressing the mixed nature of the coal and that of the associated sediments is type II. Early generated hydrocarbons (exsudatinite) have formed from pollen exines filling the pollen cavities and in places filling micro- fissures in the surrounding vitrinite.
