"This is a reprise of the paper ‘Back to the Future – Why Change Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Progress’ presented to the Tenth Mill Operators’ Conference in 2009. It was observed that the ‘boom and bust’ cycles of the industry, together with trends in tertiary education and the effects of fly-in fly-out (FIFO) operations raised serious questions about the sustainability of human capital in the mineral processing sector.In 2016 we find ourselves in a ‘bust’ after enjoying a decade of the longest commodity price ‘boom’ in a century. In the ‘boom’ did we:make any technological breakthroughs?put measures in place to improve our human capital, especially in the area of ‘professional formation’?The paper makes observations on the current performance of mineral processing engineers and the organisational milieu in which they operate. It questions whether mineral processing engineers are actually ‘adding value’ at some sites given their organisational and operational practices.Some technical trends are examined and what it might mean for mineral processing engineers.Given the above and demographic trends for mineral industry professionals, changes to the seemingly current laissez-faire model of professional development are proposed.Citation:Munro, P D, 2016. It is recognised by the major international codes that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological and grade continuity, etc. However, the difficulty in quantifying the degree of uncertainty associated with mineral resources estimation has led to the creation of a large suite of methodologies, terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of standards. It is also intuitively known that several traditionally used methods to evaluate resources do not take into account the spatial continuity of the grades, being unable to provide a reliable measure of the error associated with their estimates. Since they do not provide an error assessment, these methods are inappropriate to assess local or global uncertainty associated with an estimate. Faced with these problems, this work aims at developing a methodology for either quantitative or qualitative analysis of mineral resources estimation, through incorporation of uncertainty and the correct definition of the associated risk or error. The proposed methodology includes the development of a software code incorporating all the main classification techniques used by the mineral industry. A comprehensive study about each technique was conducted allowing a comparison of the parameters affecting mineral inventory assessment. A case study was conducted with a typical iron ore deposit data set from the Conceitpo mine of the Itabira Complex in the Iron Quadrangle, Brazil. The results showed the specific limitations of each classification system and the influence in selecting their key parameters, always based on subjective choices.

The Certificate in Mining Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is a collaborative initiative between mining schools and industry to provide accessible, cost-effective, accredited continuing education and training, designed to address the future needs of the global mining community. Content is provided by industry specialists and delivered through an integration of online learning, short courses and interactive webcasts. Accreditation is provided by a network of mining schools. In 2011, the program will deliver close to 100 short courses and interactive webcasts and provide 24/7 access to more than 130 online courses in six mining streams, to participants from as far afield as Tanzania, Argentina and Mongolia. The program is proving adaptable to corporate and mine site engineer-in-training and graduate-development programs, as well as providing accessible professional development opportunities for individuals. It also provides opportunities for cross-training from other disciplines and integration with mining school curricula.

The flotability of monazite, zircon and rutile in the presence of sodium oleate, potassium octyl hydroxamate and a commercial hydroxamate was investigated through microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube. Zeta potential determinations in the absence/presence of collectors were performed in a microelectrophoretical cell. The microflotation testwork showed that, in general, the flotability characteristics of all three minerals are very similar. Commercial hydroxamate is, by far, a stronger collector than the pure potassium octyl hydroxamate. Electrokinetic studies indicated that the adsorption of collectors shifts the isoelectric point (IEP) of the minerals towards lower pH values. These collectors also are capable of changing the zeta potential values to more negative figures in the pH region above the isoelectric point. An increase of the conditioning temperature, generally, enhances the floatability of the three minerals. A depressant is required in order that selective flotation is feasible in the system monazite-zircon-ruffle. Sodium metasilicate is an efficient depressant for zircon and rutile and affects only slightly the flotability of Monazite.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

"The development of a predictive geometallurgical model is a multidisciplinary and iterative task that involves both discovery and integration aspects. In this paper, the authors discuss the concepts of geometallurgical modelling in terms of the underlying relationships that are used to connect geology, metallurgy and economic value, and how the early-stage preparation of a spatial geometallurgical model enhances project value and provides a sound basis for future studies and test work programs.Hot Chili’s (copper-gold-molybdenum) Productora Project, which is located in northern Chile, is a porphyry-copper style deposit that can be exploited using open pit mining and preparation of a saleable concentrate from fresh ore, as well as heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) extraction of copper from oxide ores. To enhance project value in the Productora prefeasibility study (PFS), Hot Chili developed a geometallurgical model that was used to predict the process responses of both sulfide and oxide ores. The Productora model incorporates test results from mineralogical, metallurgical and comminution testing, as well as other studies completed on a suite of samples collected from the many geological domains of the deposit.Using Bond Work Index and Abrasion Index proxies in the geometallurgical model, Hot Chili estimated the variability of sulfide ore throughput and comminution costs. Heap leach acid consumption in oxide ore was estimated from drill hole calcium concentrations. The model was then used in mine scheduling to identify high and low throughput or high and low acid ore zones so that the processing of these zones could be advanced or deferred to improve net present value (NPV). Additionally, the cost benefits of preparing an early-stage geometallurgy model were quantified through a comparison to a conventional model that was based on test work averages.CITATION:King, G S and Macdonald, J L, 2016. Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) is an emerging junior iron ore company that is actively developing projects in the Central and Western Pilbara region of Western Australia. IOH commissioned URS Australia Pty Ltd (URS) in mid-2008 to prepare environmental assessment documents for the Phil’s Creek Project, which was rapidly moving into the development phase. This project comprised a small open cut iron ore mine that was expected to deliver approximately seven million tonnes over a five year mine life.IOH faced several challenges in the environmental assessment process for the Phil’s Creek Project. Although the Phil’s Creek Project attained approval but has now been placed on hold, it is a useful case study to discuss these challenges and how IOH addressed them. Several important lessons were learned through this process that can assist other proponents in addressing environmental challenges in a constructive and proactive manner.One major challenge faced by IOH related to the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Another challenge was the unusually high species richness of troglofauna recorded within the project area, with several species initially known only from within the proposed pit footprint.Meeting and overcoming these challenges has provided IOH with an increased understanding of the level of input required for consultation with government departments regarding environmental assessments, and this should stand the company in good stead for developing future tenements. Challenges in regards to the environmental assessment process may be faced during future developments, but IOH’s experiences to date and the lessons learned from the Phil’s Creek Project, will help pave the way for successfully overcoming them.

Questions of sampling precision and accuracy affect every process plant in differing ways and to differing extents. To address these perceived issues, chemists, metallurgists and engineers are often asked to check their results to confirm their reliability. However, it is not possible to achieve the level of detail required to check every sample, especially if the event has already occurred. No operation has the resources to frequently sample every point in the process for the purpose of verification.One way to address this scenario is by generating a sufficiently detailed comparative data set from a dynamic mass balance simulation of the processing plant. This mass balance uses both sample and plant instrument data to model every flow, while also taking inventory changes and process chemistry into account.The mass balance data can be used to identify any bias present in plant sampling and analysis. It can also be used to verify any unexpected assay results by taking a holistic view of the process. Improving the precision and accuracy of sampling data helps support operational decision-?making and understanding. An extensive trial of laser-based survey and monitoring systems at Hillgrove Resources Kanmantoo Copper Mine in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, has proved the capabilities of the system in monitoring rock movements on open pit walls. Initially, the trial involved deploying a Maptek I-Site 8820 laser scanner and the proof-of-concept Maptek Sentry software in the Nugent Pit to monitor ductile rock movements located up to 260 m away. The system was proven to be capable of monitoring various rock movements from 1.5 tonne rockfalls up to a 40 m high toppling wall failure. Data collected from smaller rockfalls was used to help build a database for Hillgrove’s rockfall management program. As part of the trial, the laser scanner was deployed to monitor a ramp movement event, as well as the toppling failure, adjacent to an IBIS slope stability radar. Both devices monitored the slump and the slowly developing toppling movements, with similar results. Although the radar was used as the successful ‘critical alarm’ device for the toppling failure, post-failure analysis showed the laser-based system to be capable of performing a similar role in the ductile rock regime; albeit over much shorter distances than the radar capability. A second laser scanner was deployed to monitor Kanmantoo’s Emily Pit in early December 2014, where it successfully provided critical alarm warnings for a block topple event. Sentry software, which takes advantage of Maptek I-Site 3D spatial imaging technology, was first released in November 2014 to meet industry demand for a cost effective, flexible system to detect movement. Sentry has now been re-launched as a fully transportable monitoring system. Deployed in a custom trailer, the system offers a power and communications module, cellular and Wi-Fi networking and a stable bollard for the I-Site laser scanner and Sentry software. This paper will present rock wall movement data from the Sentry trial and a subsequent two years of monitoring of the open pit walls at the Kanmantoo Copper Mine, at distances out to 750m. In addition, examples of remote geological mapping and small rockfall detection, using the laser scans, will be described. The Sentry system has proven to be beneficial for the continual improvement of slope monitoring and risk management at hard rock mines. World demand for iron ore is far from peaking, and the substantial price decline that has captivated commentators since early 2014 is not the result of widespread misreading by producers of the prospects for global market growth. Recent price movements provide little useful insight into the industry’s longer-term fortunes, apart from reminding mining companies that their businesses need to be robust against the volatility and inescapable cyclicality of mineral commodity markets. When the Paulsens operation was poised to be placed on care and maintenance, Bill Beament and the rest of the Northern Star Resources (NSR) team capitalised on the opportunity to send the Ashburton region’s only operating gold mine into the record books.A three-stage strategy was devised by NSR to pay off the acquisition and maximise the return from the operation. The first stage was to mine the 55 000 oz mine plan and pay off the cost of the acquisition, then maintain profitable production beyond the seven months and re-establish a mine life. The second stage involved an early commitment to a 220 m long diamond drill drive being placed in the hanging wall of the orebody from which the extensions of the orebody could be further explored, allowing the second stage of the plan to come into effect and extend the mine life by converting Inferred Resources into the mine plan. The third stage of the initial plan was to utilise this drill drive and continue to drill deeper holes beyond the current limit of drilling in the ore zones to extend the orebody and increase the mine’s life.With an ever growing desire to further expand, the young company took on the bold move of establishing its own mining services division. A critical element to the success of this was ensuring that the right people were recruited with the appropriate specialised skill sets.Aligning common goals amongst all NSR team members, from the board and senior management to the work force on site, was critical to integrate the new and driven direction that Paulsens had adopted. It was essential to change the focus and a shift in all employees’ attitudes and values from a mine that was all but down and out, to a site that wanted to be kicking some serious goals.Teaming together a passionate and driven leader with a strong allied workforce was always going to put NSR in the best position possible to make Paulsens the success story that it now is. Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. The Albany Conglomerate is a widespread geological unit found in northern areas of Auckland, New Zealand. It has previously been described as part of the early Miocene Waitemata Group which underlies most of Auckland. Much of the Waitemata Group comprises weak interbedded sandstones and mudstones, but also includes conspicuous conglomeratic units such as the Albany Conglomerate. The Albany Conglomerate comprises a well-cemented mixture of hard pebbles, cobbles and boulders of igneous and metamorphic derivation in lenticular beds. A number of tunnelling projects are planned for the near future in Auckland. Recent experience has shown that the variable features associated with the Albany Conglomerate can make selecting appropriate construction methods very challenging. This paper explores the engineering geological and sedimentological features of the Albany Conglomerate with respect to other conglomerates within the Waitemata Group and the potential implications on tunnelling projects in Auckland. The Dutwa Nickel Project is a nickel laterite atmospheric leach project located in Tanzania that has been under development by African Eagle Resources plc (2012). A bankable feasibility study (BFS) has been progressed to evaluate mining of the resource (107 Mt at 0.92 per cent Ni) followed by hydrometallurgical processing on-site to make a mixed nickel-cobalt intermediate product. The unique relatively high silica contents in the Dutwa deposits, as opposed to limonite, which is more commonly occurring in nickel laterites, presented the possibility for beneficiation of the ores to enhance the leach feed nickel grades and provide economic benefits in terms of operating and capital cost efficiencies.Geometallurgical relationships, based on the results of an extensive variability metallurgical test work program for beneficiation and leaching, were developed for the BFS, which resulted in an improved understanding of ore classifications within the deposit and their responses. The geometallurgical information obtained has been instrumental in making key preliminary techno-economic decisions, such as forecasting whether or not mined material should be beneficiated and was ultimately used to drive the mine plan towards the prioritisation of areas within the deposits that delivered the best cost efficiencies and overall project economic outcomes.CITATION:Elkington, T, Lorenzen, L and Czerny, C, 2013. "Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). A programme of blast improvement was initiated at the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine by BHPIO management in early-1998. One component of that work was the need to improve wall control blasting practices to better achieve the designed pit slope elements. This paper describes the geological conditions in which pit walls are developed, the mine operating equipment, the blast design concepts applied to minimise blast damage, the techniques applied in an assessment of the blast performance and the operational procedures developed to ensure that the blast concepts are effectively implemented in the production environment. Substantial changes have been implemented in both technical and operational aspects of the mining operation in order to achieve the improvements in pit wall condition, in particular recognising the need for a more flexible approach to limits blasting in response to highly variable and complex geology. The benefits to the mine are not only an improved wall condition, but increased confidence on the part of mine management that mine plans may be implemented on design and on schedule.

Gravity gold circuits have an important part in reducing operating costs and maximising recovery in modern gold plants where coarse gold is present in the ore body. The design and selection of equipment has a vital part in the overall effectiveness of the gravity gold circuit. There are a number of associated factors that need to be taken into consideration when selecting the most suitable equipment for gravity gold circuits including occupational health and safety, security and labour requirements. This paper is a case study that outlines the validation behind the design, selection of equipment and subsequent benefits of the recent upgrade of the gravity circuit at the Marvel Loch gold mine with the main component to the upgrade being the installation of a Consep Acacia Reactor. Since the upgrade there has been a significant increase in gravity recovery, which has reduced the amount of gold reporting to the leaching circuit therefore reducing reagent consumption and overall operating costs. There has been an increase in overall gold recovery and therefore increased gold production. The benefits to occupational health and safety include the removal of toxic gases being released in the gold room during the previous practice of gold concentrate calcination and the removal of the arsenic and nickel from the gold doré, which poses a risk during refining. Manual handling and security has improved as there is no physical contact with gold concentrates during the automated process using the Acacia reactor. The total time for gold room personnel working in the gold room has also reduced from around six hours per day to less than one hour per day.With the continuing development of low grade gold deposits, there will be an increase in demand for low capital, high recovery gravity gold circuits that can significantly increase overall production while reducing operating costs.

This paper discusses the factors that contribute to the cost effective design of a concentrator. Concentrator design and layout outcomes are functions of the team (engineer’s and owner’s) participating in each particular project. The benchmark for relatively modest projects was set in the 1980s and 1990s during the ‘gold boom’ when numerous cost effective plants were designed and constructed on a lump sum basis in a very competitive market. A number of factors contribute to lack of transference of the lessons learnt in gold plant design to concentrator design including established paradigms in the design and layout of concentrators, lack of experience in cost effective design, operator’s preferences for flowsheet and layout and simple lack of appreciation of the impact of plant footprint on materials quantities and resultant capital costs.Experiences with recent copper concentrator projects (both small and large) are used as case studies.

For many mining operations the challenge of equalling World Best Practices has become the key motivator for increasing mine productivities and for lowering total costs. In most instances this will only be achieved if mines optimise their total system rather than minimising specific costs within unit operations. In the past, drilling and blasting have been viewed as a cost to be minimised rather than operations which should have their impacts fully leveraged. Once a hardrock orebody is defined the activity which has the most substantial impact in determining the efficiency of a mining operation is the blasting. The output from a blast affects every downstream operation; only by understanding the extent and interactions can the mine be optimised. Substantial improvements to hardrock mining, quarrying and excavation operations are achievable. Instead of seeking the regular one to three per cent improvements based on reduction of consumables, mine operators would be well advised to go for much bigger targets of ten to 30 per cent by fully leveraging the drill and blast operations.

The æMountain Camp reefÆ at Alford's mine, Wakamarina,Marlborough, had no recorded gold production although assays of 5 - 26 g/t were reported, but it did produce c. l000 kg of scheelite. The lode consists of a lower massive quartz layer, and upper, cm-banded, ribboned quartz layers, and has a very low sulphide content. Within the massive layer, relict early fine-grained mosaic quartz with idioblastic scheelite is surrounded by recrystallised granoblastic coarse-grained quartz with calcite and plagioclase, in which an original ribbon banding texture is mimiced by strings of tiny inclusions. In both the banded and massive layers, rounded quartz grains, created by cataclastic milling of grain margins and along syn-vein fractures, have been partially annealed within later quartz overgrowths. Late fibrous quartz and calcite fill brittle cross fractures.   Deformation events D1 and D2 are associated with mid-late Jurassic metamorphism of the Pelorus Group, D2 producing the main regional schistosity (S2, and the earliest scheelite. D3 is an extensional mylonitic shear event that formed the dominant schistosity in Alford's mine (S3). The quartz lode was emplaced within the mylonite by a series of individual dilation pulses (D4). The D5 event caused crenulation of the S3 mylonite, kink banding and chevron folding of the S2 schist and S3 mylonite, and reverse faulting, rodding and cross-fracturing with late fibrous quartz-calcite veining of the D4 quartz lode.   Fluid influxes during successive dilations of D4 fractures progressively caused recrystallisation of earlier quartz bands on the footwall, annealing and recrystallisation of quartz along milled crystal margins and fractures, and deposition of minor sulphides. There was thus a dynamic interplay between fault dilation, lode fracture, fluid influx, lode band deposition, and lode recrystallisation.
