The iron ore district of Gol-e-Gohar (GEG) is located 60 km south-west of the city of Sirjan, in the Kerman Province of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Six exploration targets have been identified and iron ore has been mined from one area with dry and wet concentrate products sold. Prior to mining commencing in 1999, the proven reserves were estimated at 265 million tonnes (Mt) in 2004 and 40 Mt of 100 Mt overburden has since been mined. Of the six exploration targets, the largest anomaly in the GEG district is Deposit No 3. This paper discusses economic considerations focusing on mine extraction and construction of a concentration and pelletising plant to process ore from Deposit No 3 of GEG. Planned capacity of 10 Mt product (concentrate and pellet) per year is targeted to commence in 2011, and nominal capacity by 2014. The economical evaluation and analysis is one of the most important stages in the feasibility study of mine development. Financial calculations including the provision of financial resources, operation period revenue, loss and profit statement, cash flow, net cash flow, internal rate of return and net present value have been undertaken as part of the feasibility study. The feasibility study operating plan assumes a large open pit mine containing proven reserves of approximately 250 Mt. The feasibility study assumed an economic return of $80 per tonne iron pellet. The economic study determined that Deposit No 3 of GEG can be economically developed by open pit mining followed by magnetite separation and flotation to generate iron concentrate and pellets.

This paper describes a case history of using an integrated geochemical and hydrogeological approach to predicting solute transport from gold mine tailings in highly fractured volcanic terrain. Two modes of transport are identified, namely discrete fissure flow and diffuse seepage through the intervening weathered rock. A simple mass balance approach is used to predict concentrations at points of emergence because most of the seepage migration will be by way of the discrete fissures where advective transport will predominate. The mass balance method has been modified to allow for natural degradation of weak acid dissociable cyanide. The long term effects of diffuse seepage are also examined.

Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. The industry’s hopes for new projects have been dashed and questions are being raised as to the financial viability of such projects.A comparison of Grange Resources Savage River, Arrium’s Project Magnet, the Sino Iron Project and Gindalbie’s Karara Iron Project is used to understand the differences between the projects and why some are more successful than others.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2015. The purpose of filtration in a gold reco- very plant is to separate the gold bearing liquid from the solids in the slurry. Some of the gold is inevitably lost due to incomplete separation. An investigation recently completed by the authors has brought to light a method of reducing such losses. In this investigation, the filtration pro- cess was represented by a steady-state mathema- tical model which took account of 14 indepen- dent variables and three parameters. One of the filters in the plant at West Driefontein Gold Mine in South Africa was isolated from the rest and fully instrumented. A computerized data acquisition system was installed close to the filter, and the data obtained from it served to test the model. Using the model together with an optimizing program, the optimum operating point for the filter as a function of throughput was found, and a control strategy developed to minimize the total gold losses in the filter plant.

Sixty Schlumberger electrical soundings were carried out in the Depot Springs area, near Agnew, Western Australia as part of an investigation into the availability of groundwater for the Agnew nickel project. The object of the survey was to locate calcrete aquifers related to Tertiary drainage channels on the Pre- Cambrian surface. The electrical soundings were initially interpreted using sets of master curves and auxiliary point methods. Electrical sections were produced and contour maps prepared of apparent resistivity for AB=80m, total conductance of the overburden and transverse resistance.

The productivity and economic success of a German hard coal mine is attributed to the high productivity of a small number of operation points; however high rates of production are associated with increased gas emission at the working sites. Therefore modem high technology is required in order to reach the planned production rate, since high methane concentrations often cause unplanned breakdowns in operation. The optimised simulation of gas emission is a fundamental planning tool for mine design as well as for determining the potential of a coal deposit and has increased in significance over the last years. Methane-INFO enables the three-dimensional, graphical simulation of a working site taking account of different aspects such as the mine design, ventilation, production rate, geology, seam quality, gas exhaustion, etc. The following paper gives a short overview over the benefits of the discussed system.

The quality of mine planning decisions ultimately depends on reliable estimates of the characteristics of the orebody. The quant- ifiable factors such as grades or thickness can be estimated from field data gathered from outcrops or exploratory drillholes. Since outcrop data is necessarily limited to the periphery of a deposit, extensive drilling generally is required. This paper outlines a method for selecting the number and location of additional exploratory boreholes using an iterative procedure based on a mathematical optimization concept called fixed point theory. The method is illustrated through its application to an exploratory drilling program for a coal mine where optimized locations gave a lower estimate of regional and block variances than a manual Choice.

Many of the tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in Australia are upstream raised facilities for which the consolidation of the hydraulically deposited tailings is essential to the stability of the TSF. While much operational consideration is given to limiting the rate of rise of TSFs through careful management of deposition rates to achieve desired consolidation, the rate of embankment raise construction (RoC) is often not given the same level of consideration. Loading the tailings at too high a rate during construction could lead to upstream and potentially downstream failure of the embankment. The Tailings Retention System (TRS) at the BHP Olympic Dam Mine comprises upstream raised TSFs that are continually raised with a zoned embankment. Improving on 20 years of successful embankment raising, there was a desire to understand the acceptable RoC under varying operating conditions and assess upper construction limits to improve operational risk management. To understand the RoC, trial embankment raise construction pads were constructed at different rates and the pore pressure response of the underlying tailings material was monitored. The pore pressure data were used to calibrate the permeability and consolidation characteristics of the tailings in a finite element model (FEM) that replicated a typical embankment raise. The rate of material placement, location of the phreatic surface and construction load were varied in the FEM until failure was initiated. The results were presented as a period (in days) over which the various zones for the embankment raise could be safely constructed. The results indicate direct sensitivity to the depth to the phreatic surface prior to commencement of an embankment raise, as well as the point of application of the construction traffic load. This paper presents the study approach, challenges experienced in modelling the construction methodology, the study results and their relevance in the improvement of understanding of RoC at the BHP Olympic Dam TRS.

A major tool in the search for petroleum is reflection seismic mapping. The period which has seen most of the exploration in Victoria is also one which has seen major advances in this technology, from 1963 try present day. Seismic mapping can be divided into three interlinked areas - acquisition, processing, and interpretation. In acquisition the major changes have been from an explosive energy source in 1963 to gas exploders in 1968 and airguns in 1970. The number of recording channels has increased from 24 to 192, with digital recording introduced in 1966, and floating point recording in 1976.

The operation of quarries for the production of crushed stone and aggregates, depends heavily on rock blasting efficiency, which usually represents a major share of total production costs. After investigating the causes of this situation, a series of technical aspects have been detected, and they are described for the purpose of contributing to the minimization of costs, which also reduces the effects of blasting on the environment. Utilization of empirical design methods, of inadequate explosive types, and of erroneous drilling pauems with respect to rock properties, are the main factors to be corrected, as a consequence of poor engineering criteria, with scarce use of computational methods and field instrumentation. Several concepts of blasting optimization are pointed out, and their application to industrial operations in a Portuguese limestone quarry indicated clear trends for the reduction of production costs, as well as some of the deleterious consequences of blasting on the environment.

Although efforts towards producing a `total quality rockfill product' have allowed cemented rockfill costs to be reduced considerably, there is still tremendous potential for further cost reductions. Cemented rockfill costs range from approximately $7 to $12 (US) per tonne of fill placed. Approximately 50 per cent of the rockfill costs are associated with cement costs. A large portion of the remaining 50 per cent is associated with labour and materials handling costs. Several Canadian underground mines utilise haulage trucks and/or conventional belt conveyors to distribute the rockfill. However, due to the restrictive nature of the underground environment, these current materials handling systems have limitations (ie spillage from trucks, dust from conveyors). The Sicon conveyor system (developed in Sweden) has considerable potential for replacing these current methods. The Sicon conveyor utilises a revolutionary approach - the conveyor belt is folded over upon itself (forming a tear drop shape) so that the transported material is completely encased within the belt. The Sicon conveyor's ability to negotiate very tight comers (without transfer points) makes the conveyor very appealing for underground mining applications. An analysis comparing the pros and cons associated with the Sicon conveyor system versus conventional materials handling systems will be presented in this paper.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Recognition and resolution of this conflict is necessary if a project is to progress into future development stages, both in a timely manner and with the optimal development alternative and strategy.The challenge for project developers and those conducting the Pre-Feasibility Study is to understand what the key deliverables are (ie an Ore Reserve statement, option selection, business evaluation, forward work plan or risks) and how to follow good practice to ensure that these deliver value.CITATION:Logan, D J and Jackson, J, 2016. The development of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves is a significan step towards informing the financial community and the public about the future profitability and risks of investing in resource companies. The Code is also important from the accountants' point of view because it provides them with a well-defined bash for assigning costs or attributing value to the assets of resource companies and hence improving their financial reports. Although reporting to the public is ultimately the responsibility of management, accountants, like geologists, are frequently required to provide information for inclusion in these reports. Jr the last ten years, there has been a considerable refinement in the reporting of mineral resources which can be attributed mainly tc the progress made towards developing the Code. It seems tha the classification and terminology that the geologists have developed are widely used in the annual reports. However, little progress has been made by accountants in improving the financia information. The purpose of this paper is twofold: (a) to outline briefl) some of the major problems in accounting and reporting fo; mining companies and; (b) to examine the potential contribution of the Code in solving those problems.

The South Deposit Tailings Storage Facility (SDTSF), located at Grange Resources Pty Ltd’s (Grange) Savage River mine in north west Tasmania, has recently begun construction. The facility will provide storage for approximately 37 million cubic metres of tailings, equating to approximately 20 years’ tailings storage.The SDTSF embankment will be constructed entirely out of waste rock won from mining operations, and will feature a flow-through drain constructed from alkaline, non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock. This provides Grange with an economical storage solution for waste management (both tailings and waste rock) and maximises available space on site. The outflows discharged through the alkaline rock ‘flow-through’ will provide a long-term source of alkalinity to Main Creek, subsequently feeding into Savage River. This will provide environmental benefits to the downstream ecology that has long been degraded due to the effects of legacy acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), caused by historical mining operations.CITATION:Longey, R, Brett, D and Simmons, A, 2015. PasmincoÆs Century Concentrator in North West Queensland commenced operations in November 1999. The nameplate production capacity of 500 000 tpa of zinc metal production in concentrate was achieved in August 2002. Completion of the production ramp up was successful due to the culmination of a number of initiatives throughout 2001 and 2002. Mine to mill interaction to understand and eliminate head grade related bottlenecks affecting Concentrator production and reduce feed variation. Grinding circuit process development û operating and process control strategies to improve stability and reduce grind size to support zinc recovery. Pumping upgrades to control spillage in ultrafine zinc flotation Low density zinc flotation strategy û to improve silica-sphalerite separation to improve zinc recovery while maintaining acceptable silica in final concentrate. Flotation circuit process development û froth crowders, froth cameras and reagent control strategies to improve primary zinc flotation performance. Review and implementation of longer campaigns between planned shutdowns to improve availability. Team reorganisation û to improve setting and implementation of metallurgical strategies. This paper describes these initiatives and their contribution in achieving the production target. It also notes the ball mill motor failures that delayed the successful achievement of the ramp up, and CenturyÆs response to minimise the production impact. The paper also outlines the capital improvement program that was implemented to improve zinc recovery to design 82.5 per cent recovery once the production rate had been achieved.

In reviewing recent developments in the process mineralogy of gold it is convenient to distinguish between visible (>0.1 pm) and invisible gold (1 - 2 pm in size in polished section; these can scan the surface of a polished section, identifying the gold minerals, recording co-ordinates of the grains for subsequent examination, and making measurements of areas and sizes of the grains. However, problems of sample reliresentivity in polished section mean that such data may not give good quantification of gold mineral proportions and liberation/locking characteristics and other methods are required for this (amalgamation, cyanidation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation). Characterisation of invisible gold in bulk material (eg a sulphide concentrate) can be done by mineral separation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation or by quantitative point analyses of a large number of mineral grains. Analytical methods include electron microprobe analysis (detection limit normally -200 ppm but -10 ppm by using special techniques), ion microprobe analysis (secondary ion mass spectrometry - SIMS; detection limit -0.2 ppm) or proton microprobe analysis (PIXE; detection limit

"The Phu Kham copper-gold operation in the Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining ten per cent held by the Laos PDR Government.The original 12 Mt/a copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. An incremental improvement program resulted in a number of circuit changes being incorporated by 2011, including conversion of conditioning tanks to flotation cells and the installation of a Jameson Cell cleaner scalper. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase throughput to 18 Mt/a. In April, 2013 the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project was commissioned to maximise performance by debottlenecking the plant IsaMill™ regrind and cleaning capacity.With the variable mineralogy of Phu Kham ore, control of the c concentrate regrind circuit is essential in terms of achieving effective liberation to maintain concentrator performance. On a routine basis laboratory regrind signature plot data is compared with daily surveys of the operational IsaMills™. More extensive surveys are also conducted to determine size distribution on a mineralogical basis and the effect of fine regrinding on pulp electrochemistry and flotation performance. This paper provides a review of the operating performance of the Phu Kham IsaMills™ with regard to power draw, feed and product size distribution, feed per cent solids, mineralogy and pulp electrochemistry. This paper talks about the experiences of groups we have worked with over the last few years in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea) and the ways that they have worked to bridge the divide between traditional and introduced structures, governance at a regional level and the introduction of traditional values into monitoring and evaluation practices. In doing this these groups have created structures and processes which have helped them engage both more effectively with external stakeholders while maintaining the legitimacy of their own operations with their own constituents. These are important ideas for those involved in the mining industry that could provide a number of very tangible benefits to mining firms and their engagement with these kinds of groups.

The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines installed surface and subsurface instruments at a mine site in Colorado to monitor and characterize the overburden response to longwall mining. Instrumentation included a time-domain reflectometry (TDR) cable, a multiple-point borehole extensometer (MPBX), vertical- deformation surface monuments, and in-mine pressure cells for monitoring abutment, pillar, and gob loads with respect to the longwall face position. The purpose of the study was to collect data that could be analyzed to correlate the design of the mine layout to the resulting overburden failure response. Determining the extent of caving and fracturing is important in the and and semiarid Western United States because of the possible consequences to the fragile underground hydrologic systems upon which the land owners and users depend. This study is unique from past investigations because the overburden contains massive sandstone members that impose special conditions on the caving process and pressure redistribution above the longwall panels. This paper presents the results of this correlation study.
