Pike River Coal Limited is in the process of developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction. The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park.   As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of: +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Blast fragmentation size distribution and thus blast design have been found to have a direct impact on the load and haul cycle through excavator dig time and bucket payload. Previous studies have demonstrated that by reducing the excavator dig time and increasing bucket payload, significant improvements can be made in both productivity and unit cost. Simulation work reported in the literature indicates that a 20 per cent improvement in dig time may result in only a three per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. At the same time, a ten per cent improvement in bucket payload will directly translate to a ten per cent improvement in load and haul productivity and unit cost. Based upon these findings, extensive laboratory and field work have been undertaken in the past to correlate blast fragmentation distribution to bucket payload. In contrast, the literature reports limited studies quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on excavator dig time. Field work was conducted at Placer Dome Asia PacificÆs Granny Smith Mine (Wallaby Pit) in Western Australia, concentrating on quantifying the impact of blast fragmentation on the dig time of a Liebherr 994 hydraulic excavator (shovel attachment with 14 m3 bucket). Fragmentation was assessed for each truck load of material using the Split Desktop system, while the excavator cycle analysis was conducted manually. Measured fragmentation P80 (fragment size at which 80 per cent of material passes) values ranged from 200 mm to 1200 mm. The field study investigated the impact of various fragmentation parameters (P20, P50, P80, cumulative per cent passing 250 mm size fraction, and uniformity index) on the average and total dig times. The results indicate that the fragmentation P80 provides the best correlation to average dig time (total dig time divided by the number of bucket passes to load a truck). The total dig time was found to be dependant upon the fragmentation P80 and the number of bucket passes to fill a truck. Monte Carlo simulation results, based upon these relationships, indicate a 26 per cent improvement in average dig time and a 12 per cent to 46 per cent improvement in total dig time (bucket passes ranging from 4 to 8), with a change in fragmentation P80 from 600 mm to 200 mm.

Martha Mine is an open pit gold-silver mine, located within the township of Waihi, 150km southeast of Auckland and is operated as a joint venture between Normandy Mining Ltd. 67 %) as Manager and Otter Gold Mines Ltd. (33%). The deposit was historically mined, by underground methods from 1888 to 1952, producing 5.5 moz of gold and 30 moz of silver, from 11 mt of ore. The current operation began in 1988, producing, to June 1999 - 867,245 oz of gold and 5.5 moz of silver from 9.5 mt of ore. The licensed reserves were due to be mined out by late 2000. Consents were granted in December 1998 to allow the expansion of the operation through to 2007 accessing an additional 7.5 mt of ore at 3.4 gpt Au and 26.0 gpt Ag for 800,000 oz of gold and 6.4 moz of silver. The key elements of the expansion are: 1. Pit enlargement 2. Upgraded crushing and material handling facilities 3. Construction of a second tailings storage facility 4. Upgraded water treatment capacity 5. Increased operating capacity This paper presents an update of expansion activities to date.

"Determining the deportment of economic and environmentally significant elements in sulfidic mine materials (eg ore, gangue and waste) requires the use of advanced microanalytical techniques, including electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Sulfidic boulders were sampled from an acid rock drainage impacted ephemeral stream adjacent to historical copper-silver workings at Baal Gammon, northern Queensland. The abundance and deportment of a range of trace elements and precious metals were analysed in these samples. Whilst many of these elements represent a potential environmental risk if leached from sulfidic rocks into streams in the surficial environment, significantly some of these elements (eg In, Sb and Co) represent specialised metals that are currently considered to be in critical supply.Sulfidic waste rock material at Baal Gammon is dominated by chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Microanalytical investigations revealed that chalcopyrite contains significant quantities of In, Sn, Ag and Zn either substituted directly into the crystal lattice or occurring as discrete sphalerite and stannite inclusions. Arsenopyrite, which may comprise more than 50 per cent of some boulders, is notably enriched in Sb, Co and Ni but also contains inclusions of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and stannite. In contrast, pyrrhotite contains no trace elements of economic significance, but instead represents a likely contributor to acid generation during oxidation in the surficial environment. Trace metals (eg In, Sb, Co, Ni, Zn) are liberated during sulfide oxidation of these boulders in the surficial environment, generating a metal-rich, low-pH leachate.Fe-oxides precipitated as rinds on the surface of these boulders under low pH conditions also contain abundant As, Bi, Sn, Cu and Zn. Abandoned or historical mines represent potential sources of metalliferous drainage that poses potential environmental risks to water and habitats. Al2O3 has been regarded as a harmful gangue component in iron ore, especially causing reduction degradation in industrial sintering of iron ore. The current study aimed to utilise low-grade iron ore containing high Al2O3 content in sintering process. In order to counteract the adverse effect of Al2O3 on reduction behaviour of iron ore sinter, mill-scale and calcined dolomite were chosen as FeO- and MgO-bearing materials. Firstly, mill-scale was added to high Al2O3 sinter and addition was optimised as 10 wt per cent, then calcined dolomite was added further. Magnetite and magnesio-ferrite were identified as the major phases in iron ore sinter when adding mill-scale and calcined dolomite. As the dosage of calcined dolomite increased beyond 4 wt per cent of in sinter mix, unreacted MgO particles were observed, which is ascribed to the limitation of MgO dissolution into magnetite matrix. Both mill-scale and calcined dolomite were effective in improving compressive load and Reduction Disintegration Index (RDI) of iron ore sinter although its reduction degree was highly decreased. The addition of both FeO and MgO-bearing materials to high Al2O3 sinter has a potential to improve the sinter quality, also contribute to the recycling of industrial by-product. However, the amount should be optimised in views of phase development and deterioration of reducibility.

Design and operating conditions of large size mechanical flotation cells were evaluated by comparing them with actual operating conditions in a plant. The objective was to determine the time scale-up factor, typically based on empirical rules. Experiments were conducted on the rougher flotation circuit at Minera Escondida Ltd. The circuit consisted of self-aerated mechanical cells of 160 m3, arranged in six parallel banks with nine cells each. The rougher circuit flotation kinetics were evaluated from direct sampling and local mass balances around each cell of the bank. Adjusted overall mass balances were also developed. This information was used to fit different kinetic flotation models, and it was found that the rectangular distribution function was the most appropriate to describe the distributed rate constant for industrial operation. Then, a rougher flotation simulator was developed to describe the actual operation in terms of the operating variables (mass flowrate, solid percentage, feed grade) and the actual volumetric flowrate entering to each cell. In this study feed pulp samples were taken in parallel from the rougher circuit and were simultaneously floated in the laboratory. The kinetic behaviour was then modelled at a laboratory batch scale in order to determine the time scale-up factor between laboratory batch flotation data and industrial size flotation. The time scale-up factor observed for large sized cells, 160 m3, was found to be reasonably similar to those previously determined for self-aerated mechanical cells, but of lower size, operating at similar recoveries. In addition, the relative effect of mixing, between laboratory batch and an industrial flotation bank, was quantified by the parameter, separating the impact that kinetic and mixing changes have on the time scale-up factor. In general, the rougher flotation operation was found to reach the predicted metallurgical target, and the optimal separability criterion was also respected. The diagnostic generates information about the internal state of the process and helps to identify potential improvements for design, operation and control of the circuit.

A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

Successful closure of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is an environmental issue faced globally by metalliferous mines. During the initial feasibility and design phase of the mine life importance is placed on the physical stability of above ground TSFs, largely driven by legislative requirements, whilst closure planning is often a secondary consideration. However, as the landform is further developed and constructed attention must be paid to regularly revisit the original closure plan and update it to achieve the best (sustainable) possible outcome for both the environment and stakeholders. A mine in northern Queensland is in the process of developing a closure strategy at their TSF. Appropriate closure measures for the TSF are required to mitigate the impact of any seepage emanating from the TSF on the groundwater and surface water receptors. O’Kane Consultants Pty Ltd (OKC) have provided the mine assistance with the development of a TSF cover system design in order to appropriately manage tailings during operations and to prepare for the facilities’ closure. OKC has collected data since 2007 from cover system field trials located on the TSF. To enhance engineering judgement in the design of future cover systems, calibration of soil-plant-atmosphere numerical models to field data (referred as ‘field response modelling’) were completed. Calibrated model inputs can be used to provide insight into long-term cover system performance as well as a tool for design of the final landform.Following a site investigation, materials characterisation and numerical modelling program various cover system alternatives were developed. Two of the preferred cover system alternatives referred to as Test Plot #1 (TP#1) and Test Plot #2 (TP#2) (Figure 1), were constructed at the site and instrumented. Monitoring instrumentation comprised several nests of in situ volumetric water content and thermal conductivity sensors to measure changes in water content, temperature and matric suction within the cover system materials and underlying tailings waste. The moisture content of iron ore during handling can range from the dust extinction moisture at the point of arrival at the port to the transportable moisture limit at the point of loading ships for maritime transport. Moisture content and ore composition, specifically fines content, have a large influence on ore flowability. Typically, elevated moisture can result in bottlenecks, downtime and lost productivity due to build-up, conveyor carry-back and blockages, increasing maintenance costs. On the other hand, low moisture can result in increased dust emissions influencing the environmental footprint and product losses. Managing the use of water across the supply chain is therefore critical for service life of equipment, productivity, but also has environmental and social impacts, affecting the social license to operate. Previously, experiments have shown that oscillations induced in iron ore during handling and transport can result in movement of moisture through the ore. This kind of moisture migration depends on the nature of these oscillations, such as the undulation of idlers during conveying, the inherent ore properties and the initial moisture content. Moisture has been observed to move either upwards and/or towards the bottom of the burden. These effects can be exploited to remove excess water from the ore influencing handleability and operation, however, the actual mechanisms of moisture migration are currently poorly understood. The study presented herein involves the use of simulation to examine moisture and ore interactions. Simulations using discrete element method (DEM) and coupled with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) are implemented to investigate the behaviour of moisture in wet ore in the presence of oscillation. This is conducted at a fundamental level first using glass beads and water which is then compared to iron ore at high moisture content. The results of the modelling are discussed in view of experiments conducted.

During the pyrometallurgical processes, a substantial quantity of high-temperature ironmaking and steelmaking slags, generated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1600°C, is wasted, as the heat contained in these slags is released into the environment during the tapping process without effective utilisation. On the other hand, a significant amount of energy is required to reheat the cold materials for the manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool, often necessitating the addition of high-silica materials to facilitate the production process. In this study, an innovative approach is presented to harness the heat present in molten metallurgical slags to directly produce new raw materials for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and mitigating CO2 emissions. The theoretical amount of waste glass that can be effectively added in the process has been estimated via thermodynamic calculation. Experimental assessments were conducted to examine the impact of high-silica waste materials on the dissolution, melting and fluidity. Potential recipes for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing were suggested and an assessment of the energy savings, and reduction in CO2 emissions with manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool using this innovative approach were included. It was determined that the processes could lead to a reduction of over 26 kg of CO2 emissions per 100 kg of new material used, primarily due to the utilisation of heat from slag and the accelerated smelting process.

Much of our knowledge of the behaviour of underground coal dust explosions has been derived from less than full-scale experimental explosions in facilities as small as 0.25 m diameter pipes. Although a substantial body of research has been undertaken in larger galleries approaching the size of full-scale modern mine roadways, there are still questions regarding the scaling of results to full-sized roadways in modern coalmines. Questions also surround the issue of comparing or scaling results between smooth and rough walled galleries, round and rectangular galleries and galleries with differing wall thermal properties due to different materials of construction.This paper will examine the influence of gallery size, cross-section area and wall roughness and thermal properties upon the characteristics of a coal dust explosion. Data from past explosion research will be examined and assessed for its application to the problem along with theoretical considerations for these factors.Recommendations on the design and minimum appropriate size of explosion galleries for assessing the performance of explosion inerting strategies, passive and active explosion barrier performance and determination of appropriate pressure ratings for ventilation structures will be made.CITATION:Humphreys, D, Collecutt, G, Greenwood, J and O’Beirne, T, 2015. Gold mining companies who are signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (visit www.cyanidecode.org for further information) are required to measure WAD cyanide on-line and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of specified limits. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5 such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Recognising and in response to the gold mining industryÆs need for an on-line WAD cyanide measurement device, Mintek recently developed the WAD Cynoprobe. The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide from metal-cyano complexes. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand <-> Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The instrument proved to be accurate and reliable in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. It has gained wide-spread commercial acceptance both locally and internationally. However, itÆs recent exposure to complex ore types have called for refinements to the analysis technique. It has been further developed to improve its precision and accuracy and to remove reagent and thiosulfate interferences. Its compatibility with the most commonly used destruction oxidants has also recently been investigated. The WAD Cynoprobe may be configured to measure both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately 5 min, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. Proper oxidant dosage control and monitoring of effluent concentration levels will ultimately result in less cyanide and post-destruction salts discharged into the environment.

The Northparkes, Endeavour 26 orebody is a porphyry copperûgold deposit and comprises a moderately to well jointed rock mass characterised by gypsum veining, the intensity of which decreases with depth. The top 480 metres of the orebody is currently being mined by block caving, the undercut dimensions measuring 196 metres in length by 180 metres in width. Continuous caving was never achieved after the completion of the undercut thus cave inducement techniques were sought to maintain caving so as to safely sustain production. The use of hydraulic fracturing as a cave inducement tool was successfully trialled in December 1997 using existing exploration boreholes located midway up the current lift. Subsequent fracturing campaigns have enjoyed various degrees of success and have yielded in excess of seven million tonnes of ore at a significantly lower cost than conventional cave inducement techniques. Monitoring of both the hydraulic fracture system and the rock mass response has provided considerable insight into the geometry, growth and influence of hydraulic fracture networks above the Northparkes block cave, and has initiated additional research into the use of hydraulic fracturing in other mining methods.

Many deposits have been evaluated as potential block caves over the last 20 years due to the perceived benefit of low operating costs. However, block cave projects are typically capital intensive, with mass mining providing high throughput rates that required large investments in mining, processing and utilities infrastructure. While the key economic metrics in deciding to proceed with a caving project are typically net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return, these may not represent the best decision metrics for some companies. Where a caving project is competing for scarce capital amongst other projects in a company’s portfolio or where the caving project is the only project being evaluated by a company trying to raise capital, other metrics may be more appropriate. This paper explores the use of present value ratio and the minimising of maximum negative cash flow as suitable metrics in determining alternative strategies. Trade-offs between optimising for economic value and capital efficiency measures allow for decision-makers to evaluate potentially higher-risk, higher-capital and maximum NPV projects against lower-risk, lower-capital projects.CITATION:Stewart, C A and Butcher, R J, 2016. The invitation to speak today was in the form of a single sentence instruction: How does your company run and how do you communicate from top to bottom? It looks like I'll have to let you into our little secret. The team at Croesus know what works for us but we've never talked about it with others - least of all presented it at a conference such as this. In fact we tend to avoid the jargon normally associated with Best Practice or TQM, however in our own way, each of our staff are 100 per cent loyal to our company's aim to maintain and strengthen our commercial success. Just how we achieve this at Croesus is the subject of this presentation today, but first a little history. My dear old grandfather arrived in Kalgoorlie, as a mining engineer 100 years ago. Do you think he would have chuckled if someone suggested to him that a hundred years later we would just be starting to understand Kalgoorlie's geological mysteries? Well, here we are 100 years later and Croesus Mining is fortunate to be part of a generation now realising the true potential of Kalgoorlie's Goldfields. This provides us with a very fertile field in which to sow the seeds we can obtain from the World's Best Practice in Mining and Processing. With each new mineral deposit being discovered, old theories are being exploded. Each new deposit has a personality of its own, leading to some belated pioneering theories of where to drill next, and how to reduce internal costs so that we can win the war against constantly increasing external costs. What we have now and what the old timers didn't have is a huge database of geological input spanning several gold booms and a couple of nickel booms. My only interest in history is to pick up the points that may help us for our future. This is what we are doing in our company which is something of a David, in the David to Goliath range of mining companies in Australia. As a humbling thought; of the 115 164 tonnes of gold that the world's mines have produced throughout history, four tonnes have been produced by Croesus Mining. That's equivalent to 0.003 per cent of the total world's gold production. In the past financial year we achieved a dividend yield of five per cent. To put this into perspective, that's over twice the dividend yield of BHP, Australia's largest company. As we are somewhat less known than BHP, let me spend a few moments giving some particulars of our company's background.

The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

"Conventional wisdom is that gold not assayable is not recoverable or does not exist. There has been no formal study on the possibility that gold assays using advanced spectroscopy such as mass spectrometry and neutron activation could grossly underestimate the gold recoverable by proprietary extraction techniques. Such gold is not considered here to be æinvisibleÆ to detection but rather æabnormalÆ or ædistortedÆ at atomic level. Large-scale extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores has not been demonstrated, hence this emerging field still lacks credibility and acceptance. For fear of harming their reputation, few academic researchers or companies are expected to venture into this field until it is well proven. This paper aims to create awareness amongst metallurgists of the potential of æabnormalÆ gold ores by reviewing unconventional observations, the pseudoscience mainly available in non-peer reviewed web sites, and hypotheses for the recovery of ænon-assayableÆ gold, including: the occurrence of high levels of nano-sized gold in clays detectable by high-precision analytical instruments, which represents æinvisibleÆ gold accounts of ambient transmutation of elements, mainly using thermal methods orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements (ORMEs), which are virtually undetectable by conventional means, and their conversion to normal metals the possibility of a æhigh spinÆ state of transition metals the formation of microclusters altering the chemical behaviour of gold and the possibility of clustering with other elements. It is suggested here that gold in ores displays a range of clustering, from ænormalÆ gold amenable to conventional extraction to the ORME state. The concepts of æintermolecular waterÆ in forming complex salts locking up precious metals, electro-dissolution in strong acids, and electrowinning at both the anode and cathode are discussed as a means of treating æabnormalÆ gold ores. It is also possible that the gas phase extraction of gold chlorides under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, as well as transferred-arc plasma fuming of gold through carbothermic reduction of sulfides, could be used as a basis for extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores.CITATION:van Deventer, J S J, 2013. The Sunrise deposit is one of AustraliaÆs largest and most profitable gold deposits. It has consistently and spectacularly outperformed every resource model created. Currently over the life of the Sunrise pit there has been a 50 per cent under estimation of ounces mined. Without a solid basis for predicting the tonnes and grade or the spatial location of mineralisation, mine planning becomes problematic. Recently, through a better understanding of the mineralising processes the reconciliation of the resource model has improved to be in the order of ten per cent under on ounces mined. This paper will describe how the mine geologists at Placer Granny Smith have implemented the changes required to improve the resource model. Work began with the development of a three-dimensional lithological and structural model based on historical drilling and pit mapping. Continual updating of the geological model with grade control logging, assays and in pit face mapping, now allows for the on-going improvement of the resource model and the planning of mine development drilling.

In Australia we usually define "resource" in purely material terms, and rarely relate it to intellect and human capacity. We look at the sheer abundance of our natural resources and are satisfied with the feeling that we don't really need-to rely on using our brains. Certainly our country is fortunate to have the mineral resources it does, but in many ways Australia's worst enemy is its "lucky country" syndrome because we tend to underutilise the great resource we have in the capacities of our people. Raw material exports will undoubtedly continue to contribute a major share of our export revenue, but to harness the riches our country has to offer most effectively we need the vision and planning necessary to bring together our material and human resources. There is a need not only to find, exploit and process our minerals economically, but to turn as much of our mineral wealth as possible into high value products before it leaves the country. In particular we must use our brainpower if we want to maximise economic benefit from and political influence over the strategic minerals which leave our shores. In the past we have been successful in finding and exploiting minerals because our mining industry has been in the forefront of private sector research and development. But if Australia is to have an advantage over other mineral rich countries in insulating itself from the effects of cyclical swings in commodity prices, then the future of the industry must lie even more in technological sophistication rather than depending. on such considerations as size and location of mineral deposits. To survive, our mineral industry must have the foresight and resourcefulness to make its own luck. There are two keys to increased efficiency in exploration and production and in further processing methods: enhancement of the skills of the workforce and continual improvement of R&D.
