SAFER, cheaper, and faster sinking of mine openings seems to have been realized with the completion of a borehole 5 ½ ft. in diameter and 1208 ft. deep, in Minnesota, during 1938. Moreover, as the opening is to be used solely for ventilation, its circular cross section, smooth walls and freedom from fire hazard recommend it in comparison with the usual timbered shafts of rectilinear cross section. It should be pointed out that a drill hole sunk without the use of explosives frequently will stand open without support, whereas a shaft sunk by standard procedure using dynamite usually must be timbered because of the wall-shattering effect of explosives. The saving in maintenance resulting from the elimination of timber is obvious. The work was done by Pickands Mather & Co. at its Zenith mine, Ely, Minn. This company wanted a ventilation opening capable of delivering 50,000 cu. ft. of air per minute to the fourteenth level, 1200 ft. below the surface. While several general articles1-3 have described the method used, detailed time and performance records have not been presented before. Moreover, with a method as new as this, it is important to compare the results attained under widely varying conditions. Among the new conditions faced at Ely were some extremely hard rock, a series of vertical fractures, seepage water, and some long stretches of sound rock which, combined with excellent equipment, gave a chance to operate without unusual delays. Developments in boring large holes have generally taken the obvious course of increasing the size of the equipment, a line of attack that has resulted in putting down 3-ft. diameter holes at damsites for studying the foundations4 and in drilling ventilation openings between levels at Butte.5 Such drills operate from the collar of the hole, and the power from the drill is transmitted to the cutting tool through drill rods or pipes. In order to keep down the volume of rock that must be ground to sludge, the cores in large-diameter drilling are made as large in diameter as possible. The following discussion occurred on the afternoon of Sept,. 22, 1930, as part of the fall meeting of the Iron and Steel Division at Chicago. About seventy-five men attended this session. C. B. Murray opened the meeting, as follows: C. B. Murray, Cleveland, Ohio.—It is very encouraging to see so many here this afternoon to discuss this important matter of beneficiation. The producers of ore, I am sure, are anxious to furnish the grade of ore that the consumer wants. The consumer sometimes wants that which cannot be economically produced and often the producer cannot understand why the consumer wants certain things. It was to bring together these two interested parties that this meeting was proposed. I was appointed the chairman of the meeting, chiefly because I happened to be the chairman of the Iron Ore Committee of the Institute. I know a little about iron ore but have not perhaps kept up with the times in blast-furnace practice. I am asking Mr. Sweetser, who is well informed from both sides, to take over the meeting and carry on the discussion. R. H. Sweetser, Columbus, Ohio.—We want to have a free discussion between the iron-ore men and the blast-furnace men as to just what we are trying to reach in the beneficiation of iron ores. Many of those present have had a great deal of experience. There are men here from the ranges who have been passing through the experimental stage of beneficiation of iron ores, and there are some who have already gone on to commercial production. We have reached the point where the beneficiation of iron ore is important to the whole iron and steel industry. The connection between iron-ore beneficiation and the cleaning of coal is so close that I think we can profit by working very close to the coal people. Some Aspects of the Iron-ore Situation W. G. Problems involved in applying wet scrubbers to gas cleaning coal dust from thermal dryers are reviewed. Careful consideration of all the elements going into a modem coal preparation plant is required in view of the increasing difficulty of applying suitable gas cleaning equipment. This problem arises not only from the presence of finer coals to be handled, but also from the pressures applied by both the general population and the plant operators to improve the standard of gas cleaning performance. The Peabody scrubber is presented by the author as a machine designed to help improve this cleaning operation. Wet scrubbing of fine coal from thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment to the fine particulate matter. Among them are: 1) Dust in gases leaving the thermal dryer cyclones is often extremely fine with high percentages of total dust loading less than 1p in size. 2) Flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulfur or higher. Therefore, comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3) Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas scrubber are continually being lowered, while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend. 4) Installation of a scrubbing system on thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore, the operating costs of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum. We have, then, the basic situation which calls for comparatively high cost stainless steel alloy wet scrubbers, which must be highly effective in removing coal fines particularly in the 0 to 5-p size range. Further, the standards of scrubber performance are continually being raised towards the level where gas discharged from the scrubbers must be essentially free of any coloration due to residual dust. In view of the highly refractive nature of fine coal dust, residual loadings of 0.01 grains per cu ft or less are required to provide a color free discharge gas. In the present specifications under consideration a residual coal loading of 0.05 grains per cu ft would be considered color free, since the discharge gases are saturated in the range of 150°F. The steam plume acts as a masking agent at the point of discharge, and upon dissipation of the 150° saturated vapor stream, the effluent gas stream could be essentially color free. The specification under consideration calls for residual solids loading of 0.05 or less grains per cu ft, given a coal size distribution shown in the basic data in Table I. It is noted that the dust laden coal stream has a size distribution by weight of 33% in the 2 to 5-p size range and 55% in the 0 to 2-p size range. During the past 50 years the attention of mining-men has been turned to Africa, and within the past decade prospecting-expeditions sent into Central Africa have resulted in the open-ing-up of several mines. Having recently spent two years in the Belgian Congo for the Societe Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo, it is our purpose to outline briefly the mining-conditions in that part of Central Africa. Before it became, in 1908, a Belgian colony, this region was known as the Congo Free State. 11. Location and Area. The Belgian Congo lies in southwestern Central Africa, west of the continental divide, as illustrated in Fig. 1. It has a coastline of but 20 miles on the Atlantic, but widens rapidly eastward to points 5 north and 14 south of the equator. Its area is 908,000 sq. miles, which is almost one-quarter that of the United States and Alaska, or more than one and one-half times that of Alaska. Stated in other terms, its area is nearly one-third that of the United States, exclusive of Alaska and the insular possessions, or more than that of all the United States east of the Mississippi river. THE solubility of gases in metals has been of interest since Graham's time in 1866, but, although the subject was actively studied by iron and steel metallurgists during the eighties, the era of painstaking laboratory investigation begins in 1907 with the publication of Sieverts'1 thesis on the occlusion and diffusion of gases in metals. Since then, Sieverts has worked almost continuously in this field, and his views on the subject are the prevailing ones at the present time.2 Probably the most important result obtained by Sieverts, and frequently verified since by other observers, is the discovery that at a constant temperature the solubility of almost all gases in both the liquid and solid state of most of the metals is proportional to the square root of the pressure (for pressure above 100 mm.). The obvious explanation of this fact is that the gas dissolves as atoms and not as molecules, although it has been pointed out a number of times, first by Donnan and Shawl in connection with their work on the solubility of oxygen in silver at 1075° C., that the formation and solution of a compound of the metal and gas would also be indicated by a variation of the solubility with the square or higher root of the pressure. Sieverts4 himself raised the question whether the usual explanation (i. e., that the gas dissolves as atoms) may not be wrong, when he found that the square root law held also for the solubility of sulfur dioxide in molten copper; in which case dissociation into simpler molecules or atoms does not take place. This subject covers much ground, therefore it must be treated in a general way rather than in detail in this paper. Personnel To approach the measure of a mine, it is, of course, essential that the personnel be measured, and this measuring must be done in a circumspect manner and conclusions must be reached slowly. There may be one unit in the personnel of an organization that may be out of step with the remainder of the organization, not always because of lack of ability, but because of misplacement or lack of proper measurement of his capabilities. Too much time can scarcely be spent in the study or measure of the personnel ; in fact, a manager or a superintendent of a mine never completes his work along this line. Mine or Plant Just as no two men are alike, so no two mines or plants are alike; and yet there are many similarities. Find out what the similarities are, and this will help to make clear the dissimilarities. Try to visualize details of the difficulties, not because you will have to deal with them yourself, but to consider them in later studies of general problems. To outline all the steps to be taken in familiarizing oneself with a plant or operation would be impossible, but the following points may be of interest in any investigation. The study of a mine is generally made backwards-—that is to say, one sees the finished product first-—-but this is immaterial, because each step must be considered separately in any event. As a rule, there are certain heads under which the different features of mining can be placed, as follows: Ventilation.—Ventilation is usually the most important item in power cost and safety, especially in gassy mines. Quantity of air, water gage and power consumption, and finally analysis of the return air in full return and separate splits should be considered. In the United States, fully 98 per cent. of the anthracite and bituminous coal tonnage obtained from underground operations is mined by the room-and-pillar system. Under this system, the total cost of the coal f. o. b. railroad cars contains as its greatest single item the money paid for "labor." Each labor dollar in an average bituminous mine may be subdivided into 85 c. paid for work done inby the gathering turnouts (including all work at the face), and 15 c. outby that point (including all work in and under the tipple). In an average anthracite mine, the corresponding figures are 70 c. and 30 c., the larger breaker force accounting mainly for the difference between these and the bituminous figures. The next largest single item after "labor" is usually "supplies and power;" and a division of this item inby and outby the gathering turnouts shows somewhat the same relative proportions as has been noted under the case of "labor". During the past 10 years, the chief advances made in the coal industry have been to obtain economies through complete mechanization covering that portion of the work which lies outby the gathering turnouts. These results have been accomplished by applying scientific principles to railroad yard layout, to cleaning and sizing machinery, to dumping facilities, to roller-bearing haulage equipment, and to heavy-rail, well-ballasted trackage. But these improvements, while gratifying in their resulting economies, apply only to 15 to 30 per cent. of the important cost items. Obviously, then, the big problem before the engineers of the coal industry today has to do with the methods of mining and the layout inby the gathering turnouts. Four years ago, Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., determined to have an exhaustive study made of the conditions which must be met in order to gain complete face mechanization, and in order that such a mining layout would be based on correct underlying principles. The result of that study, which was made by the writer, led to the adoption of a method of longwall mining wherein the roof is worked on the caving system and is supported as an overhang along the face by steel jacks.

INTRODUCTION The magnitude of the thermal expansion of silica brick, and its inability to withstand rapid temperature changes, present problems of considerable importance in the manufacture of siliceous refractories. In the study represented by the experimental data herein described, these problems are considered from the point of view afforded by the results of recent investigators: Fenner and his associates of the "Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D. C., who have established the stability relations of the silica minerals, and Endell and co-workers in Berlin, who have studied the changes brought about in the constitution of siliceous refractory materials upon the application of heat. In the process of manufacture, the quartzite from which the brick is made changes in part into cristobalite and tridymite. The attempt is herein made to determine by microscopic methods the degree of transformation in various specimens of test bricks manufactured at slightly varying temperatures of burning, with varying coarseness of grain, and to determine the effect of repeated burning. BY COMBINING the sessions on reduction and refining of copper, lead and zinc it was possible to devote an entire day to nonferrous metallurgy. Four interesting papers were presented at the morning session and four more in the afternoon. In the discussion of papers on copper, F. R. Pyne acted as chairman, with H. M. Shepard as vice-chairman, whereas for those on lead and zinc, F. F. Colcord acted as chairman, with C. R. Hayward as vice-chairman. The paper by P. D. I. Honeyman on the smelting of raw concentrates in the reverberatory furnace was presented by Mr. Pyne and discussed by Messrs. Mazany and Hayward. The interesting paper by E. S. Bardwell, com- paring the use of various fuels in copper-refining furnaces at Great Fails, Mont., was presented by Mr. Shepard and discussed by Messrs. Boggs, Gronningsater and Hayward. That by R. G. Knickerhocker, describing the stationary basic copper converter at Messina, Transvaal, was presented by Mr. Pyne, together with a written discussion by c. R. Kuzell, of the United Verde Copper co. It was an interesting illustration of how well-known processes may sometimes be modified to fit into unusual conditions.

THE major portion of the work described in this paper was performed by R. W. Young,+ a graduate student in the department of Mining and Metallurgy, Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, working under a cooperative agreement between the Hardinge Conical Mill Co., the Sheffield Scientific School, and himself. Since this cooperative scheme is at present in effect in the case of a considerable number of other students in the department and since it is the hope of the school that the privilege thus extended may be utilized even more freely in the future by mining and manufacturing companies, it may not be amiss at this point to give a summary of the general plan. Briefly it is as follows: A graduate student, whose undergraduate work in this or other universities shows promise of ability to handle research work, is chosen by conference between the company and instructor involved. The aim of the company in the agreement then entered into is to obtain the solution of one or more of the technical problems with which it may be confronted, or, at the end of 1 or 2 years, to obtain as an employee a man especially trained in its work. As. a means to accomplish one or both of these ends, the company furnishes the machine, apparatus, or material to be tested and pays the student during his graduate work a small salary, usually just sufficient to cover his living expenses, tuition and fees. The aim of the student is special training along a line in which he is particularly interested, the attainment of his advanced degree, and the chance to show to his future employer ability to handle such problems as may be presented to him. In return for the financial aid which he receives he agrees to devote at least half of his working time to the special problem submitted by his company. The other half is devoted to study of the collateral subjects required by the department for the granting of the degree which the student seeks. The student further agrees to enter the employ of the company in question at a wage not greater than that paid in like positions to recent graduates not specially trained and to remain with his employer at such wage for at least 1 year. If the student is to obtain a degree, the special work forming the basis of his investigation must be such as will involve real research and not mere routine manipulation. The subject is chosen by conference between the three parties to the agreement. The work is carried on under the direct supervision of the instructor involved. A metal is said to be overstrained when it is deformed beyond the elastic limit at a temperature well below the critical range, as in cold working. Quantitatively, overstrain might be considered as that part of the total elastic deformation of the piece of metal, left over after the external load is removed, that added to the permanent deformation due to plastic action will give the total permanent deformation. Ordinarily the effects of this phenomenon, which vary with the internal residual stress probably in accordance with Hooke's law, are more noticeable when the yield point of the metal is exceeded, but they probably also exist to a smaller degree when the load is just large enough to cause the least amount of permanent set. These effects, which we recognize as the result of overstrain, are as follows: 1. An apparent increase of the elastic limit in tension and a decrease of the elastic limit in compression, provided the external load is tensile. The reverse is true when the load is compressive. 2. An elastic after-effeet in which time and temperature are important factors. 3. A state of imperfect elasticity in which Hooke's straight line becomes slightly curved, giving rise to an hysteresis loop. 4. In addition to the apparent increase in the elastic limit, such properties as the hardness, ultimate strength, and resistance to fatigue failure are increased, provided the overstraining has not been carried far enough to make the metal brittle. 5. Correspondingly the ultimate elongation, reduction in area, magnetic quality, ratio of endurance limit (fatigue breaking stress) to elastic limit, and resistance to season cracking (in certain copper alloys) are decreased. The question naturally arises: how do these changes in the properties of a metal resulting from overstrain influence our method of design? The fact that most of the desirable qualities are increased makes overstraining a favorable process, from an engineering standpoint; but on the other hand, the loss of such qualities as perfect elasticity and complete

IT is indeed an honor and a responsibility to have been selected to present the thirty-fourth in this series of Henry Marion Howe lectures, established to perpetuate the memory of a great teacher and one of America's outstanding scientists. Previous Howe lecturers have established high standards for this annual AIME event. It has been my good fortune to have enjoyed close association with five of these former lecturers; namely, Bain, Grossmann, Johnston, Sosman, and Vilella, all of whom have been prominently identified with the research activities of the organization with which I am connected. Some years ago I had an opportunity to examine a letter written by Professor Howe in 1904. This document was particularly interesting to me since I never had the privilege of personal acquaintance with Professor Howe and do not recall even having seen him during his long and active career. In view of the fact that the letter dealt, to some extent, with matters related to the subject of today's lecture, I would like to quote briefly from it. The letter is datelined, "Bad Kissingen, June 11, 1904." The salutation reads, "Dear Bradley," which suggests that it was probably addressed to Bradley Stoughton, who, I believe, was working with Howe at Columbia University at that time. The letter reads, in part, as follows: "Austenite and Martensite. I have not examined what Osmond says in his new book. His former remarks about austenite I found very confusing, indeed unintelligible. I think we can reconcile matters well enough for the present by assuming that martensite is a transition step between austenite at one end and ferrite and cementite at the other. Above critical range for steel of 0 to 1.80 carbon, austenite is normal state; below Ar1, ferrite and cementite are normal." The letter then continues with a discussion of Osmond's ideas on metallographic nomenclature, particularly his use of the terms martensite, troostite, and sorbite, including the following pointed comment: "For common purposes it seems to me unwise to drag them in, and much simpler to confine ourselves to the end stages Austenite Ferrite plus Cementite Osmond does not really know his own mind— or does not clarify his ideas to others—as to nomenclature." DRY cleaning, or pneumatic separation, is not, strictly speaking, a recent discovery. Among the archives of the Patent Office may be found many patents dating back as far as 1850 which cover early attempts to separate materials of varying specific gravity or of different shape by means of air. Hundreds of patents covering this art have been issued, which may be roughly classified into four general groups, as follows: 1. Stationary devices with pulsating air currents. The separating surface is usually riffled and air is supplied by bellows or compressors. This group also includes air jigs, which have been used rather extensively. 2. Stationary devices with continuous air currents. These submitted the material to a continuous current of air, either horizontal or vertical. Chaff is blown from wheat by such a device. 3. Reciprocating or vibrating devices with pulsating air. A small group in which the pulsating air is supplied by bellows and some motion provided in the separating surface to move the stratified material to various discharge points. 4. Reciprocating or vibrating devices with continuous air supply. This is by far the most important group and all recent developments have been along this line. All of the above groups involve the stratification of material by air and include none of the dry methods that use other principles, such as coefficient of friction, magnetism, etc. Air Stratification In all of the above groups of air separating devices, the same phenomena are found as exist in water concentrators; that is, free settling will be found in some and hindered settling in others, with a complex action on the reciprocating tables similar to the wet tables. The experimental value of the settling ratios of particles in air has never been determined but, following the formulas given in Richards'

Secondary or scrap materials appear at all stages in the industrial process and in a bewildering variety of forms, grades, and values. It is useful to begin analyzing them by dividing the broad concept of "Secondary Supply" into three parts First, the concept must encompass the stock, or pool, of secondary materials. In the process of satisfying his wants, man produces desired products from the materials and natural resources found around him. As long as the rate of production is greater than the rate of obsolescence of a given product, the total stock or pool of materials embodied in that product will increase in size This stock concept relating to secondary materials is directly analogous to the "resource" concept used for primary raw materials in the preceding chapter, and includes all materials embodied in existing products (Obviously, this excludes those materials which are destroyed in the consumption process, viz , fuel oil burned to provide heat.) Consumption of a primary material in a productive process tends to reduce the resource base of that primary material In direct contrast, however, the production or use of products increases the resource base of the secondary material. Thus, we find that a country which has no resource of a primary material can, by importing products that contain the material, build up a large enough stock to provide a basis for secondary recovery. The estimated growth of the pool of copper in use in the United States through 1967 is shown in Table 5.B.1.a The estimate of 39 3 million tons at the end of 1967 includes only technologically recoverable copper and is, therefore, somewhat less than the stock concept described previously, which does not distinguish between recoverable and unrecoverable material. Nevertheless, Table 5 B.1 does give an idea of how a nation's secondary resource of a material can grow over the years. A second aspect of the concept of secondary supply is the generation of secondary materials. This includes materials generated as scrap in production as well as the movement of a material out of the stock of existing products via wear, damage, or obsolescence The quantity of materials generated is usually either nearly or completely independent of the technologic capabilities and economic forces which prevail in the secondary recovery market.b The justifications for and the qualifications to this statement are considered later. FEATURES of the second fall meeting of the Petroleum Division for 1941, held at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, Oct. 29-30, were the forum on the Paloma Plan on Thursday after- noon, the large attendance from east of the Rockies, and the dinner on Wednesday evening sponsored by the Southern California Section and at which President Suman spoke on the strategic minerals and metals situation. The attendance was large and the technical fare uniformly good ; the presiding officers had the proceedings well in hand at all times and kept things humming. Some- times it was necessary to taper off the discussion because of pressure on time. All this was due to careful groundwork before the respective sessions. These presiding officers deserve citation: L. W. Huebel, Howard Pyle, E. K. Parks, Carlton Beal, E. G. Trostel. R. W. French, Jr., John Dodge, and H. N. Marsh. The Los Angeles local commit- tees and the Southern California Section deserve much credit for the arrangements, which were recognized by suitable resolutions at the end of the meeting.

Concord coal mine near Bessemer, Ala., built, owned, and operated by Tennessee Coal & Iron Div., U. S. Steel Corp., produces only a metallurgical grade for use as coke in blast furnaces of the division at the Fairfield and Ensley works. Capacity of the operation is approximately 800 tph, half of which is delivered to the coke and coal chemical plant at Fairfield after beneficiation to metallurgical grade coal. The remaining portion of the mine run is rock and refuse removed during preparation. Concord mine coal is hoisted to the surface coal preparation plant by an underground slope conveyor. The slope conveyor is 2449 ft long and has a lift of 729 ft. At time of installation the Concord mine slope conveyor was the largest single conveyor unit ever made with respect to belt horsepower and total lift. After several years it became necessary to determine the cause of slope conveyor cover wear.

Two massive sulfide zinc-copper ore bodies are in quartz-sericite schist (probably formed by regional metamorphism of sediments) and andesite of the Precambrian Yavapai Series, on opposite sides of a large rhyolite mass. The Copper Queen ore body is conformable with bedding of its schist host rock, but the Old Dick ore body probably crosscuts the strata. A lens of low-grade mineralization in chlorite schist, associated with the Old Dick ore body, crosscuts through 150 feet of strata. The ore bodies are almost entirely enclosed by premineral faults with less than 150 feet of displacement. The minerals of the ores are pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, with minor arsenopyrite and galena and small amounts of intimately associated chlorite, sericite, and calcite. Old Dick sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have mutual boundaries, and sphalerite grains contain abundant exsolved chalcopyrite. Copper Queen sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have extremely ragged boundaries, the sphalerite contains no exsolved chalcopyrite, and the ore overall has a schistose texture. The pre-mineral fault on the hanging wall of the Copper Queen ore body has had 100 feet of post-mineral displacement. Wall rocks of the Old Dick ore body locally have been sericitized. Andesite and quartz-sericite schists for at least several hundred feet around both ore bodies have been chloritized erratically and contain traces of copper.

RAPID progress has been made during the past year in the copper mills throughout the country. Particular efforts have been made to increase the fine-grinding efficiency by the installation of larger classifying units operating in closed circuit with ball mills, such as the 78-in. high-weir Akins installation at the Phelps Dodge plant at Ajo, Ariz.; also the Type "FX" Dorr classifiers of Nevada Consolidated at McGill. Nev. and the "FX" Dorr bowl classifier of the Braden Copper Co. in Chile. Some of the copper milling plants in the Southwest, such as Chino in New Mexico and Ray Con. in Arizona, have replaced rolls operating wet in their fine-grinding circuit by rod mills. At Hollinger primary rod mills were formerly used in open circuit followed by pebble mills in closed circuit with classifiers. They now have primary ball mills in closed circuit with large extra heavy classifiers and no secondary mills. This new installation is producing the same grinding on 5000 tons per day with a reduction in cost of nearly 4c. per ton. At the Braden plant, in Chile, short-head Symons crushers have replaced 54-in. rolls, thereby in- creasing crushing capacity with some saving in maintenance cost.

VERY few studies of the aluminum-sodium system have been reported. Heycock and Neville1 were unable to detect any solubility of sodium in liquid aluminum. Mathewson2 prepared an equilibrium diagram consisting of two horizontal lines at the melting points of the two metals. He was unable to detect solubility at either end of the system. Scheuer3 first developed a method for the chemical determination of sodium in aluminum and then studied the solubility of sodium in liquid aluminum. His method involved heating aluminum with excess sodium under hydrogen until the two liquids were at equilibrium, chilling the melt, and analyzing the aluminum-rich layer. He reported the solubility to be 0.l0 pct sodium at 700°C, 0.115 pct at 750°C, and 0.128 pct at 800°C. This paper on the aluminum-sodium system is the twenty-first in a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories describing equilibrium relations in aluminum alloy systems. MATERIALS The alloys for this investigation were prepared from electrolytically refined aluminum (99.99 pct) and sodium of reagent quality conforming to specifications of the American Chemical Society.4 Chemical analysis of the aluminum showed the following impurities: 0.002 pct Si, 0.002 pct Fe, 0.002 pct Cu, <0.001 pct Mn, 0.002 pct Mg and 0.001 pct Na. The sodium content of all alloys was determined by either chemical or spectrographic standard procedures5 No. IIA and No. SII respectively. DETERMINATION OF LIQUIDUS The boundary of the miscibility gap was determined by a modification of the method of Scheuer3 and of that used by Henry and Cordiano.6 As finally developed the method was as follows: A fused alumina crucible 25 mm id with 75 mm depth and 1.5 mm wall thickness was placed on the bottom of a container made from a 4-in. length of 1 ½ -in. iron pipe and pipe caps. The space around the sides of the crucible was filled with 40 mesh crystalline alundum. A charge of 60 g of aluminum and 10 to 15 g of sodium was placed in the crucible, the sodium first being trimmed and rinsed with iso-pentane to remove kerosene. The container was tightly capped, filled with argon (99.6 pct pure), and heated to the desired temperature (between 670 and 800°C). A positive pressure of argon (about 8 mm of mercury) was maintained through a small pipe to the upper cap. After soaking for from 2 to 5 hr, the container was quenched by directing a stream of water onto the base, so that solidification of the aluminum-rich layer was rapid and essentially unidirectional. Physical properties of thin films of CdS and CdSe formed by vacuum deposition onto glass sibstrates have been studied as a function of deposition and processing conditions. The crystallinity and surface features of CdS films were examined using electron microscopy and electron and X-ray diffraction techniques. The films were poly crystalline; the preferred orientation and crystallite size increased with film thickness, substrate temperature, and deposition time. The CdS films consisted primarily of hexagonal-phase material, in contrast to similarly prepared CdSe films which have previously been observed to contain mixtures of cubic and hexagonal phases. As-deposited CdS films showed no major dependence of Hall mobility on crystallite size or degree of preferred orientation. Hall mobility and carrier concentration in CdS and CdSe .films were measured at various temperatures; both parameters increased with temperature and yielded activation energies which depended on fabrication conditions. Surface-desorption phenomena and overcoating of the semiconductor with SiO affected the observed electrical properties significantly. THIN films of cadmium sulfide1,2 and cadmium sele-nide3,4 have been employed by various workers as semiconductors in the insulated-gate thin-film field-effect transistor, known as the TFT. These devices are most commonly made by vacuum deposition of all materials onto an amorphous substrate such as glass. A knowledge of the microstructure and electrical properties of semiconductor layers used in the thin-film transistor is essential in order to form a realistic model for the device and to improve its performance, reproducibility, and reliability. This paper will describe studies of the physical properties of vacuum-deposited CdS and CdSe films prepared under various conditions. Structural characteristics examined in- cluded phases present, crystallite size, nature of preferred orientation of crystallites, surface roughness, and structural homogeneity throughout the film thickness. Electrical properties measured were Hall mobility and conductivity and their dependence on temperature and ambient. Thin-film properties are affected by many fabrication parameters including purity and physical form of evaporant, deposition rate, film thickness, design and temperature of the evaporation crucible, geometry of the deposition chamber, nature of the residual atmosphere, composition and temperature of the substrate, and details of postdeposition processing. PREPARATION OF FILMS In this work the semiconductor films were deposited in a conventional oil-diffusion-pumped system with pressures in the 10-8 torr range. The CdS evaporant was obtained from the Eagle-Picher Co. as a high-purity coarse-grained crystalline powder; the CdSe was a high-purity sintered powder supplied by the Harshaw Chemical Co. The evaporation crucible was a resistance-heated molybdenum-wire basket coated with aluminum oxide and filled with a quartz wool plug at the top. The source to substrate distance was usually 10 cm. This region was enclosed by a Pyrex inner cylinder. The substrate was heated with an overlying Pyrex plate coated with tin oxide. The substrate temperature was controlled using a thermocouple attached to the lower side of the heater. This thermocouple was calibrated against another thermocouple attached to a dummy substrate and by observation of melting points of various metal films deposited in the system. The substrates were polished borosilicate glass plates and conventional glass microscope slides. Substrate preparation included cleaning with an ultrasonically agitated detergent bath followed by isopropanol-vapor de-greasing. Film thickness was measured interferomet-rically during and after deposition.
