The question of the influence of gases upon the properties of copper has received the attention of a number of investigators, among whom Sieverts,' Iwase,2 Lobley and Jepson3 stand preeminent. Solubility of Gases in Copper Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a variety of gases in the metal in the solid and liquid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metal. In this respect they disagree with Lobley and Jepson, who have based their opinions upon the appearance of small ingots of the metal which had been fused in an atmosphere of one or other of three gases and had then been rapidly cooled, while surrounded by gas, to the freezing point (rate—possibly 30" to 60" C. per sec.). The ingots that had been fused and cooled under nitrogen and carbon monoxide were free from blowholes and it was assumed that these gases were not absorbed in amounts much in excess of those which would dissolve in the solid metal; the ingots similarly treated under hydrogen were full of blowholes and it was assumed in this case that gas was ejected on solidification of the copper. The effect of varying the rate of freezing upon the character of the test ingots was not examined by these investigators; otherwise, it is felt, their views might have been subject to modification. Sieverts' most important contribution is that the solubility of a gas in any metal is proportional to the square root of its pressure or concentration. Knowing then the absorption coefficients of the various gases in copper, it should be possible to determine the analysis of the

Geophysical prospecting for ore has been more or less at a standstill during the present crisis owing to the lack of interest in base-metal exploration. A notable exception is the increased use of electrical and magnetic methods in prospecting for gold, the former in Canada, United States, Sumatra, Africa and Western Australia, and the latter on the Rand. This application to gold prospecting marks a forward step in ore prospecting because it is based upon mapping the geology instead of a direct location of the ore in question, as the amount of gold in an average gold ore is far too small to have any influence upon the physical properties of the rock in which it occurs. The development has thus gone in the same direction as geophysical prospecting for oil; that is, to find geological conditions that are genetically connected with the gold ore as exemplified by known occurrences. Naturally the success of this indirect prospecting depends upon two things: (1) the soundness of the geological conclusions upon which is based the hope of discovering new deposits, because a great many geological "set-ups" are barren, and (2) the ability of geophysical methods to help the geologist to collect the pertinent geological data within reasonable cost, after which favorable structures may be drilled or trenched. The first point is one to be considered by the mining geologist. In the vicinity of producing mines or promising prospects, the chances of finding ore in quartz veins and shear zones are great, and a survey giving the location of these features will materially guide both surface and underground exploration. Even in outside exploration the chances are sometimes favorable. As an example may be taken the Northeastern Ontario-Western Quebec gold zone. Large areas are here covered with glacial and post-glacial deposits and a simple study of available maps reveals the fact that less than 30 per cent of the area can ever be even preliminarily prospected by cominonly used prospecting methods, of which the pick and shovel are the main tools. S EVERAL FACTORS have brought about a vastly greater interest in the gold-mining industry in the last two or three years. Outstanding is the fact that there is an open market at a fixed price for all that can be produced. a condition that holds for no other commodity. Costs of production have decreased greatly, owing to lower prices of supplies and equipment and lower wages. Improved metallurgical processes and equipment are also available. To big new gold district is being opened up but virgin ground is being prospected with some success in many of the more remote parts of the world and right here in the United States many old properties are being reopened 111 the light of present condition<, tailing dumps are being re- worked, and profitable leases taken on abandoned property. Many of the men who are becoming interested in gold are mining engineers whose experience has all been with base metals heretofore: some are engineers with no mining experience; some are not engineers at all but men who cannot find profitable employment in their usual field of activity and are attracted by the age-old lore of the yellow metal. Some are business men with a little money and an idea that under present conditions gold mining offers a safer investment for it than most other kinds of business. It is to those more or less inexperienced new- comers in the gold-mining industry that this article i4 ad dressed. Those who are connected with the large gold mines or who have had rears of experience with the small ones will find in the following pages little or nothing of interest but it is hoped that the newer generation of small mine operators, on whom the healthy growth of the industry depends so much, may find here some helpful hints.

Thin foils made from the gold-rich region of- short (0.15 mm)Au-Ag diffusion couples annealed at 880°C for 1 hr were examined in ax electron microscope and the structures were compared with that of pure gold subjected to identical heat treatments. The couples underwent Plastic deformation (bending) during the diffusional anneal. The foils prepared from the diffusion zone have a higher dislocation density and incidence of subboundaries than pure gold. The plastic bending of the couple can be interpreted in terms of the climb of edge dislocations, which are pavallel to the bend axis, along the direction of diffusion. THE interaction of lattice defects during interdiffu-sion between two metals has been considered by several investigators. In particular, da Silva and Mehl,1 Barnes,&apos; and Bardeen and Herring3 have proposed models based on interactions between point and line defects to account for the Kirkendall effect (marker movement). Each of these models is based on dislocation climb, which can either add or remove lattice planes, induced by an under- or supersaturation of vacancies. A theoretical treatment of the nucleation and growth of voids by the condensation of vacancies has been presented by Seitz.4 Stresses can arise in a binary diffusion couple as a result of the vacancy flux and the gradient in the lattice parameter. rinkmman&apos; has investigated the effects of diffusion-induced stresses on void formation; the results of his analysis suggest that voids can form and grow under the influence of these stresses in the absence of an excess vacancy concentration. The relationships between vacancy supersaturation and diffusion-induced stresses and void formation have been elucidated also by Balluffi and seigle6 who concluded that the stress generated by a vacancy supersaturation aids the growth of voids. Experimental evidence which indirectly shows that stresses are produced by chemical diffusion has been obtained by several researchers.2,7-9 This evidence consists in part of the observation by light microscopy of the formation of subgrains, a process characteristic of the high-temperature deformation of some metals during creep.&apos;0 More striking, however, is the plastic bending of short (0.2 mm) Cu-Ni couples observed by Barnes2 and of boron-doped silicon crystals reported by Queisser.9 Diffusion-induced dislocations in iron and silicon have been investigated by Ainslie et a1.11and Schwutte and Queisser,12 respectively, the former using transmission electron microscopy and the latter an X-ray transmission technique. Matthews and Crawford13 observed the formation of boundaries by the climb of interfacial misfit dislocations in thin, vapor-deposited Au-Pd couples diffused in situ in an electron microscope. In order to obtain additional information on the phenomena associated with defect interaction and diffusion-induced stresses in binary couples, an electron transmission study of foils prepared from the diffusion zone of short Au-Ag couples was undertaken. The initial objective was to investigate the processes occurring at various points of the diffusion zone. Subsequent research demonstrated that foils could be prepared only from the gold-rich region of the diffusion zone using the technique described herein. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation and Annealing of the Diffusion Couples. The couples were made from annealed, high-purity (99.999 pct). polycrvstalline gold and silver sheets (0.075 mm thick). Shall (0.075 by 5 by 17 mm) elec-tropolished coupons of gold and silver were pressure-bonded by heating the two metals in a graphite device to 770°C and holding at this temperature for approximately 30 min. THe Pocahontas district occupies the extreme southern end of West Virginia, principally McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties, and a part of Tazewell county, in southwestern Virginia. The first record of the coal field is a report by Prof. J. P. Lesley, of Pennsylvania, about 1880, in which he mentions a coal opening at the upper end of Abbs Valley, Tazewell county, Va. C. R. Boyd, a mining engineer of Wytheville, Va., published a series of articles in 1881, mentioning coal on Indian Creek, Tazewell county, and on Horse Pen creek, which coals, he stated, extended toward the Ohio River. He also mentions the Abbs Valley coal reported by Lesley. In 1881, F. J. Kimball (who became president of the Norfolk & Western R. R. in 1883)) after examining the Scott mine in Abbs Valley, went northward across Abbs Valley Mountain to the place now known as Pocahontas, where he located what has since been called No. 3 vein of Pocahontas coal. In November, 1882, Jed Hotchkiss and others prepared a cross-section of the Flat Top Mountain coal measures, some notes on which were published by Mr. Hotchkiss, between 1880 and 1892, under the title of " The Virginias.&apos; In May, 1881, the Norfolk & Western R. R. was organized through the purchase of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio R. R., an old line running from Norfolk, Va., to Bristol, Tenn., with branches from Petersburg to City Point and from Glade Springs to Saltville. At that time, charters had been granted for three railroads tributary to the New River Valley, but their proposed routes would indicate that the promoters were concerned with minerals, timber, and a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R., rather than the development of any coal in the Pocahontas district. One of them was projected to extend up Bluestone River a short distance, but not far enough to reach the coal in the Bluestone Valley, and a little grading was done for a narrow-gage road between New River Station and a point in Giles county, Virginia, near the West Virginia line. All charters and railroads in this district were acquired by the Norfolk & Western R.R.

The destruction of long-range order in Mg-Cd, has previously been thought to occur as a second order process. In the present work a variety of X-ray diffraction techniques are employed to show that in this case and in Mg-Cd alloys containing frorn 20 to 33 1/3 at. pct Mg the process more nearly resembles an ordinary first order phase transformation. It is found that the ordered alloy, which occurs as a single phase at lgw temperatures, transforms with increasing temperature into a Cd-enriched disordered (P) phase and an Mg-enriched ordered (a) phase. The interval over which these two phases coexist under apparently equilibrium conditiovs extends from 25" to 87°C content. At 33 1/3 at. pct Mg the two-phase region has disappeared. Measurement of the long range order parameter, s, for the ordered phase in MgCd, (from superlattice line intensities) shows that it disorders only very slightly before it is transformed into the p form. Kinetic experiments reveal that when the a phase is formed frorn the p phase by suitably quenching so as to suppress phase segregation, the transformation is essentially complete and the a phase has acquired its equilibrium value of S in less than 1 min. In an earlier investigation carried out in this Laboratory1 the rate of disordering of the MgCd3 superlattice was determined over an extensive range of temperature. The process was found to be first order and the rate constant, k, was established. At the lowest temperatures studied k was found to increase exponentially with temperature. At higher temperatures, however, it passed through a maximum and for the 100 deg interval below the point at which the superlattice was destroyed k was observed to decrease with increasing temperature. The various theoretical treatments1-3 of order-disorder phenomena lead to a negative temperature coefficient for k near the superlattice critical temperature but this region for MgCdB seemed unusually wide. Detailed analysis of the point indicated&apos; that either the long-range order parameter, S, for MgCda varied with temperature in an anomalous way or the disordering in this instance is more complex than in the cases which have been treated theoretically. The original objective in the present work was simply to determine S vs temperature for MgCda to ascertain whether the disordering was in conformity with theoretical expectations.2° In an early stage of the work it was noted, however, that under equilibrium conditions ordered (a) and disordered (0) phases coexist in MgCd, over a considerable range of temperature. Since on thermo- dynamic grounds the coexisting phases must differ in composition, the investigation was enlarged to permit the compositions of the two phases in MgCd3 to be determined and to establish the extent of the two phase regions for alloys containing from 20 to 33 1/3 at. pct Cd.

Delayed failure in steel occurs by controlled initiation and growth of a crack. The incubation period for crack initiation was measured. Crack initiation and Propagation are controlled by interaction between hydrogen concentration and triaxial stress state. The incubation period results from stress-induced diffusion of hydrogen to the point of crack initiation. THIS paper describes the phenomenon of delayed failureland the kinetics of crack initiation and propagation in uniformly hydrogenated steel. The investigation was prompted by service failures of high-strength-steel components at applied stresses far below the conventional yield strength, after the part had successfully sustained equal or higher stresses for an extended time interval. This delayed failure phenomenon, often termed static fatigue, is associated1 with the presence of hydrogen. This is not surprising, since the voluminous literature on flaking and hydrogen embrit-tlement demonstrates that hydrogen may exert a potent embrittling influence. Flakes, or internal hairline cracks in alloy-steel forgings, are related to the presence of hydrogen retained from the steel-making process.2 On the other hand, embrit-tlement arises from hydrogen introduced during surface treatments such as acid pickling or electroplating. Laboratory delayed failures have been induced in notch specimens of 4340 steel by electrolytic charging of the specimen surface with hydrogen and subsequent static stressing.l,4,5 Static fatigue was observed over a wide range of applied stresses; however, failure did not occur below a critical applied stress, designated as the static fatigue limit. In this instance the extended time for failure resulted primarily from the macroscopic redistribution of hydrogen. A crack formed to the depth of the hydrogen enriched "case* upon loading; further crack growth naturally awaited diffusion of hydrogen into the material ahead of the crack. The crack-propagation rate was therefore controlled primarily by the macroscopic diffusion of hydrogen into the specimen interior during the test. Thus, in this instance static fatigue was associated with the movement of a gross concentration gradient. However, delayed failure in steel of uniform hydrogen concentration is of greater fundamental interest, as well as commercial significance. With a homogeneous hydrogen distribution a different mode of delayed failure might be expected. As the heterogeneous hydrogen distribution became more uniform,4,5 the initial crack-propagation rate decreased markedly and, in fact, what appeared to be an incubation period for crack initiation was observed. However, the macroscopic concentration gradient precluded an accurate evaluation of these observations. Although the existence of an incubation period, up to this time, has not been established definitely, it is not amiss to point out some implications of the concept. It is of interest in all hydrogen-induced embrittlement phenomena, such as flaking, delayed failure, and hydrogen embrittlement. Much discussion has centered around the possibility of an

The mechanical behavior of MgCu2 from 20 o to 725°C has been determined by "brittle-ring" tensite-test techniques, axial compression, and bending experiments. Compressive ductility begins at 450°C (0.65 T/Tm) and slowly increases with increasing temperature white the tensile ductility is characterized by an abrupt brittle-ductile transition at 600°C (0.8T/Tm). The compressive strength increases eightfold from room temperature to 400°C with a "normal" decrease as the temperature is further increased. The tensile strength goes through a rather abrupt threefold increase above 600°C with a subsequent decrease at higher temperatures. The slip system is (111)[110] and the twinning system is (111)[112]. At high temperatures MgCu2 is quite rate-sensitive, and dynamic yield points are observed that are extremely orientation-dependent. The high-temperature creep behavior under constant load is characterized by an increasing strain-rate with time. The general characteristics of the mechanical behavior make it possible to classify MgCu2 with those materials in which initial mobile dislocation density and the dislocation velocity-stress dependence are significant in determining mechanical response. Mgcu2 is the C15 prototype of the cubic Laves phase. Its range of homogeneity extends from 32.8 to 35.5 at. pct Mg at 500°C and narrows at lower temperatures. The lattice parameter is reported to vary from 7.02 to 7.05A,1 and the compound is completely ordered to the melting point of 819°C. MgCu2 has a brassy metallic appearance, is extremely brittle, and many of its physical properties are intermediate between those of the constituent elements: the electrical resistivity is 3.5 x 10-6 ohm-cm, Young&apos;s modulus is 10x 106 psi, the shear modulus is 6 x l06 psi, and the thermal coefficient of expansion is 18.7 x 10-6 cm per cm per "C from 20" to 250°C. Usually, properties of intermetallic compounds as functions of temperature have been determined by hardness, compression, or impact behavior, and almost all of these experiments have been performed on polycrystalline materials. Tammann and Dahl,2 for instance, determined the onset of ductility in a series of binary intermetallics by ball-hardness measurements and found the onset to range between 0.71 and 0.96 T/T,. Lowrie&apos;s3 investigations included some tensile properties, and he found ductility beginning around 0.65 T/Tm for most materials examined. His work did include some data on polycrystalline, nonstoichiometric MgCu2, however. The theory of gravitation is based on Newton&apos;s law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A = KMRm2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth&apos;s gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical discussions and calculations,in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C:. C:. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. Gravity and Level Surfaces Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm. /sec.2) and less commonly lrierely as centimeter-gram-second units (c. g. s). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, perpendicular to the earth&apos;s surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as (&apos;the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth&apos;s surface it comrrlonly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

Previous investigations have shown that lithium is body-centered cubic from near its melting point to the temperature of liquid air.1,2,3 Nevertheless there was an incentive to search again for a transformation at low temperatures: C. Zener4.5 has remarked that the low value of the elastic modulus (C11 — Cl2)/z of body-centered cubic metals and alloys implies a rapid increase in free energy with decreasing temperature, which would favor the occurrence of a transformation; also the shear movement to which this modulus applies is one that can transform a body-centered cubic structure into a slightly distorted face-centered cubic structure. It was confirmed that lithium does not transform spontaneously at liquid nitrogen temperature, but it was found that a transformation can be induced at this temperature by cold working the metal,6 and at slightly lower temperatures a different transformation occurs spontaneously. Transformations were also found in solid solutions of magnesium in lithium. The Nature of the Transformations Before presenting a detailed treatment of the technique used and the specific data obtained, it would be well to give a brief survey of the general characteristics of the transformations. A new crystal structure begins to form spontaneously in a specimen when it is cooled below a critical temperature. In lithium the structure appears to be close-packed hexagonal; in theLi-Mg alloys most of the diffraction lines (but not all) are near those for hexagonal lithium. The transformation proceeds as the temperature is lowered and soon stops if the temperature is held constant or raised. The course of the transformation on cooling is indicated by the curve at the lower left of Fig -I. This curve is drawn in stepped fashion because the transformation goes by discrete steps with audible clicks. Because of the similarity to the decomposition of austenite into martensite in steels, it seems appropriate to designate the beginning of the spontaneous transformation on cooling as the Ms point. On heating to room temperature after the low temperature treatment only the usual BCC structure is found. On heating, the low temperature modification begins to disappear at a temperature which will be designated as Ac. The transformation on heating is halted when the rise in temperature is halted. The temperature must be raised 40 to 50°C above Ac before the reversion is complete—an interval which is sensitive to the rate of heating and to the time of holding at temperatures above Ac. This behavior on heating thus has similarities also to the formation of martensite in the cooling of steels.

Bond type simulated closed-circuit grindability tests and batch grindability tests were run on six pure minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore. The simulated closed-circuit tests were made at five different meshes of grind. The minerals tested varied widely in hardness and breakage pattern. For all simulated closed-circuit tests both Bond and Holmes work indices were calculated and compared. The Bond grindability testlm6 has been widely and quite successfully used for predictions of such items as ball mill power requirements and as an aid in plant comminution equipment selection. The test is interesting in that although run as a series of batch tests it is over-all a simulated closed-circuit test with a circulating load of 250%. The simulated closed-circuit feature is probably the primary reason for the notable success of the test. Perhaps the major criticism that can be brought against the test is that it is time consuming, since it normally takes a trained technician about an eight-hour shift to perform it.4 For many purposes this is an acceptable time requirement. However, if a grindability test is to be used for mill control purposes it should be performed in as short a time interval as possible, preferably under an hour. Sometimes in industry strictly batch tumbling mill tests are run and an attempt is made to correlate such batch tests with plant mill operation. Then an attempt is made to adjust operating tumbling mills based on data from the tests. The tests, however, frequently do not correlate well with operating data. The purpose of the present work was to explore some of the similarities and differences between a simulated closed-circui.t grindability test and a batch type test. Six different minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore were tested in the experimentation. These materials varied widely in hardness, breakage characteristics, etc. Standard dry Bond grindability tests were mn on all materials at 48, 65, 100, 150 and 200 meshes of grind. Feed material was prepared by stage cmshing to -6 mesh. Initial feed volume was 700 cc. Care was taken to maintain the standard constant weight (about 20125 gm) and number of balls (283) during all the tests. Rotational speed was 70 rpm. Table I lists the materials studied along with pertinent data regarding the materials and Bond grindabilities obtained. In addition, dry batch tests were performed on all materials. These tests were made in the same mill as was used for the Bond tests. An identical ball charge and an identical feed volume were used. After rotating the mill for a predetermined number of revolutions at the same rotational speed as for the Bond test, the material was removed and separated from the ball charge. A screen analysis was performed on this product. Knowing the original size distribution of the feed and the size distribution of the product, it was possible to calculate the grindability or grams of a particular mesh produced per revolution of the mill. After the screen analysis of the product, the various fractions were recombined and placed back in the mill for further grinding. After grinding for additional revolutions of the mill the procedure was repeated. Thus, it was possible to obtain grindabilities for each material at a number of meshes of grind and for various revolutions of the mill. Grind-abilities obtained from batch tests are shown in Table 11. COMPARISON OF BOND AND BATCH GRINDABILITIES Figs. 1A through 1D show relationships between batch and Bond grindabilities. Figs. lA, lB, 1C and 1D show respectively graphs indicating the relationships for batch tests run for 100, 300, 500 and 700 revolutions of the mill. For a particular material on each graph, points are shown for 200, 150, 100, 65, and 48 meshes of grind except for several missing coarse meshes of grind for galena which did not fall conveniently on the figures. For each material and graph the point nearest the origin is for 200 mesh, the next for 150 mesh, the next for 100 mesh, etc. Considering Fig. lA, it is interesting to note that all relationships shown are essentially straight lines. THE decomposition of austenite in steels, because of its immense practical importance, has been subjected to extensive study in recent years from the point of view of the mechanism of the process.1-3 Although much information has been acquired a number of questions, principally of theoretical interest, remain. One is that of the atomic-crystallographic mechanism by which each of the various reaction products forms. The isothermal reaction products of the eutectoid decomposition in plain carbon steels (to which this study is restricted) have conveniently been classified in three general groupings-pearlite, bainite, and martensite. Of these several products, pearlite and martensite have been studied extensively, but bainite has received only scant attention. As a result, the mechanism of the formation of pearlite and that of martensite are now fairly well understood while a great deal of uncertainty exists regarding bainite. PEARLITE Pearlite forms from austenite by the precipitation of alternate platelets of cementite and ferrite, which grow into the austenite matrix.2-5 The rate of reaction may be described in terms of a rate of nucleation and a rate of growth 2 3 Mehl and Smiths have attempted to determine the lattice relationships existing between the ferrite in pearlite and the parent austenite. Using a pole-figure method of analysis, it was found that a limited number of ferrite orientations resulted from the decomposition of a single grain of austenite; it was not possible,[ ]decide between two assumed ideal relationships, both of which appeared to account for the experimentally determined pole figure. It was definitely shown, however, that the relationship obtaining was quite different from that determined for the proeutectoid separation of ferrite.7 No attempt was made to determine the habit plane (matrix plane to which the precipitate lies parallel) of the pearlite lamellae. The stress distribution at the surface of a twisted cylinder is analyzed along the boundary of a slip plane of arbitrary orientation and this analysis is applied to the torsion of cylindrical crystals of magnesium. A criterion for slip is developed and the critical resolved shear stress of magnesium in torsion is found to be 0.038 kg per sq mm. The mechanism of torsional deformation in magnesium and aluminum is described, as well as the relaxation of a twisted crystal at elevated temperatures. THERE has been considerable fundamental study A of the mechanism of slip occurring during deformation in tension and compression but comparatively little attention has been paid to the mechanism of torsional deformation. This paper is concerned with the way in which a single crystal deforms in static torsion and with the phenomenon of untwisting which a twisted crystal undergoes during annealing. Particular attention is paid to the application of the critical resolved shear stress law to torsional deformation. Probably the most likely mode of torsional deformation that can be imagined consists of rotation of one part of the crystal relative to another on the active slip plane. Here the most interesting feature is the slip direction. If a cylindrical single crystal is twisted about its axis and if, to consider the simplest case, the active slip plane is normal to the specimen axis, then the direction of gross slip at any point must always be at right angles to the radius drawn to that point. It follows that the crystallographic direction of slip must be continually changing, in sharp contrast to slip in tension which occurs in a crystallographically constant direction. Extensive investigations of slip in torsion have been made by Gough and his associates.&apos; They made torsional fatigue tests on metal single crystals belonging to a number of different crystal systems and observed, with a microscope, the appearance of slip lines on the surface and of strain markings on the transverse cross section of cylindrical specimens. They concluded that the critical resolved shear stress law was just as valid in torsion as in tension, in the sense that slip occurred on that plane and in that direction in which the resolved shear stress was a maximum. They also established that the operative slip planes and directions were the same as in tension. They did not, however, measure the critical resolved shear stress in torsion nor, in fact, did they establish that a critical value of the resolved shear stress was necessary for the initiation of slip. Their investigations were, moreover, restricted to torsional fatigue tests which necessarily involve small strain amplitudes. THE large-scale manufacture and use of uranium in conjunction with the atomic energy development during the war led to a need for knowing the equilibrium diagrams of uranium with various other metals. The alloys of uranium with aluminum and with iron were among the first that were studied for this purpose. Much of the work was done in the manner of a survey since it was necessary to determine the important features of the phase diagrams rather than to obtain completely detailed results. For this reason no attempt was made to locate exactly such features as liquidus lines, solid solubility limits and compound and eutectic compositions. It is believed, however, that there are no great inaccuracies in the diagrams reported here and that no important points were overlooked. Earlier work on alloys of uranium with aluminum and iron is almost nonexistent and in each case is considered to have been of little value by M. Hansen. It is interesting to note, however, that the compound UAl3 was first reported in 1902 by L. Guillet. Experimental Procedure Materials: The uranium used for making most of the aluminum alloys was obtained from material prepared by Metal Hydrides, Inc., and melted in vacuum at M.I.T. Because of the lack of an adequate supply of metal, it was necessary to use material from several different batches and hence it is impossible to state an exact analysis. However, a few results indicated about 0.01 to 0.03 pct iron and probably about 0.03 to 0.05 pct carbon. Toward the end of the work a small amount of metal was obtained from Brown University and from Iowa State College and this was used in determining the transformations in pure metal and in some dilute alloys. All of the aluminum used in this investigation came from a supply of high purity metal (greater than 99.9 pct aluminum) which was obtained through the courtesy of Dr. Mehl of the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The uranium used for making the alloys with iron was produced by the bomb reduction process which has been described by J. Chipman.² This metal, after vacuum melting, contained about 99.9 pct uranium by weight with carbon and iron as the chief impurities. Electrolytic iron containing about 0.012 pct carbon, 0.020 pct nickel and 0.009 pct copper was used in making the melts. Melting Equipment: The melting of the alloys went through a stage of development which culminated in the use of beryllia or beryllia-lined crucibles and in the use of high frequency heating in either vacuum or in an atmosphere of argon. It was found that uranium at a few hundred degrees above its melting point would pick up aluminum and to a lesser extent silicon from an alundum thimble while aluminum above 1000°C would extract silicon from the impure alundum. No reaction of either metal with beryllia was noted at temperatures as high as 1800°C. The distillation of aluminum from the aluminum-rich alloys was quite troublesome at temperatures above about 1300°C and was only partially avoided by the use of argon instead of vacuum. OF all the machinery used in mining work, mine cars are probably the most abused. They are hauled through water and muck, up hill and down grade, whipped around curves, bumped and jerked, and exposed to the ravages of the weather. However, as a general rule their lubrication is not altogether neglected. The mine operator may not heed the extra drag that a frozen conveyor bearing gives, but he is all too aware of the increased load that faulty mine car wheels put on his power plant. When the circuit breakers begin to fly, and when his mine loco- motives come out with only half the cars that they were able to carry a month before, then neglected mine car wheel lubrication becomes apparent, and woe to the person responsible.

In changing from one brand of pig lead to another a readjustment of press operating conditions is nearly always necessary. This is due largely to different flow characteristics, and some brands extrude at a much lower pressure than others; for example, copper-bearing lead requires much more pressure than a low-bismuth lead under the same operating conditions. With the modern type of lead press the extrusion practice in general differs very little. Molten lead at a temperature of 375" to 400" C. (710" to 750" F.) is cast in a water-cooled cylinder and allowed to cool or solidify into a slug for six to nine minutes, This slug is forced into the die block and around the core tube through which the cable runs. The • die block is held at an optimum temperature by means of gas flames, usually 175" to 225" C. (350" to 435" F.). Measurements of the temperature of the cable sheath taken at the time of extrusion have covered a range of 190" to 225" C. (375" to 435" F.). According to Tammann, the rate of extrusion for a metal under constant pressure through a simple orifice is almost doubled for each 10" C. rise in temperature. Because of the irregularity of die-block construction, such a great increase is not obtained in lead-cable extrusion practice. To obtain more definite information about the effect of small percentages of metals usually present as impurities in virgin pig lead, a series of compression tests were made covering several different brands of lead and various alloys. Since the usual temperature of the sheath is approximately 200" C. as it emerges from the die block, these compression tests were all performed at 200" C. Five different brands of virgin pig lead were selected, as follows: Brand A: A desilverized western lead of very high purity. This lead contains neit,her copper nor bismuth. Brand B: A bismuth-free southeastern Missouri lead, usually containing 0.05 to 0.08 per cent copper. Brand C: A copper-free mid-western desilverized lead of very good grade, usually containing around 0.06 to 0.10 per cent bismuth.

The effect of fluid injection to control water coning in oil and gas wells was investigated. Analytical and model techniques were employed. The factors investigated were the position and length of the completion interval, the point of fluid injection, the viscosity of the injected fluid and the relative thickness of the oil and water sections. The resulting influence of these factors on the net producing water-oil ratio was determined. Several important conclusions can be drawn from the study. In general, it was found that the net producing water-oil ratio can be reduced by fluid injection. The magnitude of this reduction depended on the factors listed above. An important practical consideration is that the injection fluid may be either oil or water. If the injected fluid is less dense than the connate water of the reservoir, the fluid will not be lost. This fact is reassuring when valuable oil is being injected. Efforts to suppress water production were more successful when the injection fluid was more viscous than the reservoir oil, or when a zone of reduced permeability existed in the vicinity of the point of fluid injection. Under test conditions, little benefit was derived through the use of impermeable barriers or cement "pancakes". INTRODUCTION The occurrence of water coning has been known for at least 60 years. In thin oil or gas pay sections, the presence of an oil-water or gas-water contact hinders production and often causes early abandonment of the afflicted well if a completion is even attempted. Even when relatively thick pay sections are found, the encroachment of water when a water drive is present will eventually pose serious water coning problems. This water is often corrosive, expensive to separate from the oil or gas and is costly to dispose of. The theory of water coning has been discussed by a number of authors. 1,2,3,4 Briefly, water coning to the producing interval in a well is due to pressure gradients resulting from the production of fluid from the reservoir. These pressure gradients will cause a water cone to rise toward the bottom of the producing interval if a water-oil or water-gas contact exists. The tendency of the water to cone is offset or partially offset by gravity forces since the water has a higher specific gravity than the oil. A balance then exists between two forces, gravitational forces arising from the difference in specific gravities of the oil and water, and the pressure gradients causing the flow of fluids to the wellbore. If the pressure gradient exceeds the gravitational force, water coning to the wellbore occurs and water production results. Through the years considerable thought has been given to the water coning problem. More than 50 U. S. Patents have been granted to inventors on the subject. A relatively complete literature review of the water coning problem has been made. 5 A number of these patents hold considerable promise for the solution or the partial solution of the water and/or the coning problem. Very little has been written describing field tests of techniques for the suppression of water coning. A notable exception is the paperby West. 6 He reports success in reducing gas coning by a combination of gravel packing and oil injection above the oil-producing interval. He also describes a comparable method to prevent water coning, but provides no field examples. This study experimentally and analytically verifies the benefits of oil injection as a means of partially or completely suppressing the water cone. While the gas coning problem was not treated, it is anticipated that results comparable to those obtained in water suppression could be obtained with reduced oil injection since the viscosity contrast between oil and gas exceeds that between oil and water. For the purpose of this study, the conventional potential flow theory was applied to the water-coning problem. The experimental verification centered on both a radial and a linear model. The model study permitted the investigation of complex flow configurations and the use of fluids of differing densities and viscosities. No analytic expressions are available to permit a solution of the problem as stated (see Fig. 1).

The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 A.D. graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell district of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still used for the mineral are "Plumbago," meaning leadlike, and "Black Lead." The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it "graphite" from the Greek word "graphein," meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite. Physical Properties and Classification Graphite is found in laminated, flaky aggregates disseminated in schistose rocks. It also occurs in veins and exhibits a foliated or fibrous structure. Graphite is a black lustrous mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal system, with rhombohedral symmetry. The crystals have tabular form and are six-sided; the faces are commonly striated. The flakes have perfect basal cleavage and are opaque. When well crystallized, the flakes have a black metallic luster while the amorphous material is black and earthy, with a microcrystalline compactness. The flakes feel greasy. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It melts at approximately 3550°C at a triple point under 1250 psi. It sublimes between 3300-3500°C at 14.7 psi. At 3726°C a second triple point occurs at approximately 100,000 atmospheres. Thermal oxidation in the presence of oxygen begins at 300°C and the rate increases with temperature. The three forms of carbon (charcoal, graphite, and diamond) are distinguished by chemical and physical tests. The specific gravity of charcoal is 1.3 to 1.9, of graphite 2.266 g/ cm3 (crystal density), and of diamond 3.5. Graphite has a hardness of 1 to 2 (Mohs&apos; scale). Natural graphite can be divided into three classes: disseminated flake, crystalline vein (fibrous or columnar), and amorphous. Flake graphite is a lamellar form found in metamorphic rocks, such as marble, gneiss, and schist. Each flake is separate, having crystallized as such in the rock. Crystalline vein graphite is found in the form of well defined veins or as pocket accumulations along the intrusive contacts of pegmatites with limestones. The graphite of such deposits is of two types, foliated and columnar. The important Sri Lanka (Ceylon) deposits are vein type. Amorphous graphite is commonly found as minute microcrystalline particles more or less uniformly distributed in feebly metamorphic rocks, such as slates and shales, or in beds consisting practically entirely of graphite. The latter usually are metamorphosed coal seams and carry as much as 80-85% graphitic carbon, while the former, being altered carbonaceous sediments, commonly range from 25 to 60%

GERMANY&apos;S recent collapse and the occupation by the Allies of the coal fields of the Ruhr, the Saar, Silesia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia have focused attention on the postwar coal problems of Europe. American coal operators are interested deeply in what is happening in Britain, particularly in the discussion of plans to rehabilitate and reorganize the entire British coal mining industry, as such reorganization will probably determine the place Britain will occupy in the European coal markets for the next few decades. The continuing decline of British out-ut per man-shift, particularly during wartime, has resulted in a most serious effort to determine whether this unfortunate trend is due to the physical condition of the coal seams, poor management, poor engineering and planning, inadequate use of power and machinery, or failure of labor to co-operate with management.
