During the phosphating of car bodies containing aluminium, the employed phosphating chemicals zinc, manganese and nickel are, for thermodynamic reasons, only used to a limited extent for the desired surface coating. The major proportion of these metals is discharged together with the incidental cryolite-containing phosphating sludges and the rinse water. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Institute of Mineral and Waste Processing, Waste Disposal and Geomechanics at the Clausthal University of Technology has developed a two-stage process for the production-integrated recovery of the dragged out chemicals and for closing the rinse water cycle for Audi AG. During the first stage, the phosphating chemicals are recovered by means of leaching. In the second stage, the rinse water is treated by means of electroflotation followed by an ion exchanger.

As the mining landscape continues to transform, the challenge of accessing deeper orebodies quickly and safely is becoming a frequent topic of conversation amongst those in the mining industry. The rapid development of underground mine entries to gain earlier access to deeper orebodies is an ever-present challenge to mine owners and contractors. Overcoming this and providing economical solutions to unlock the value in these deeper deposits is a challenge that should be confronted.In 2013, Redpath Australia Pty Ltd (Redpath) commenced construction of what would be the first of two drifts excavated through the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.The excavation and development of the two drifts (declines) was completed as part of a contract for underground mining services between Redpath and Anglo American at the Grosvenor Coal Mine Project in Central Queensland, located approximately 5 km north of the town of Moranbah. Having recently completed the drift development, this paper will extend on the early writings of Donnelly, Ramage and Donghi (2014) and provide detail on the operational achievements, advance rates, threats, opportunities and learnings during the excavation of the two declines: the conveyor (CV) drift and the transport (M&M) drift.CITATION:Ramage, G, Donghi, M and Barnes, A, 2016. The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

This paper describes the design, the first three years of operation and optimization of a large, single stage SAG mill at Minera Yanacocha?s Gold Mill facility located in northern Peru. The Gold Mill was commissioned in March 2008 with a 32? x 32? EGL, 16.5MW single stage SAG mill, to process 5 million tonnes per annum high grade oxide Au/Ag ore. Operational control, feed size distribution, grinding media, mill liner, grate and pulp lifter optimisation have allowed the mill to operate 15-30% above design throughput rates, but with a product P80 coarser than design. As part of the optimization, full grinding circuit surveys were conducted. Historical operating data and survey data were analyzed and used to evaluate possible circuit changes and determine alternative operating strategies. A number of changes were implemented which allowed the SAG mill to operate similarly to a large ball mill and achieve finer mill product that was closer to design. This paper summarizes life to date data analysis and improvements made by Minera Yanacocha as well as the grinding circuit optimisation study conducted by Metso Process Technology and Innovation.

The paper describes some problems encountered with the foundation of a deep drainage caisson constructed on the Nile Bank in Cairo. The use of suction dredging while sinking the caisson led to a piping failure of the sandy soil in the base which was loosened during the process of pumping. A study was carried out to investigate the problem and a procedure was adopted to retain the stability of the caisson.

[Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. INTRODUCTION After a mining company has discovered a mineral deposit, the problem is then how to mine and process that deposit the best way. The principal problem facing managers or engineers who must decide on mine plant size, equipment selection, and long-range scheduling is how one can optimize a property not only in terms of efficiency but also as to project duration. Mine opti¬mization is dependent upon the interaction of con¬tributing parameters which leads to maximizing the net present value (NPV) Realistic mine planning is the key, to the analysis. The process is to be used when evaluating undeveloped properties or when a complete revamping of existing facilities is scheduled The proc¬ess is not intended for detailed mine design but rather for property evaluation and feasibility studies. The derivation of the various input parameters will only be discussed to the point where a meaningful correlation can be made with the overall analysis. The interrelationship of the parameters will be the central point because most company guidelines and financial analysts have their own standards when deriving the various inputs. Assume that the data is totally acceptable and pro¬vides at least the following categories of information and guidelines- (1) mineral and waste inventory; (2) geologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical criteria; (3) topographic layout including property boundaries; (4) metallurgical flowsheet, recovery and design criteria; (5) access, water, power, and environmental base-line study; and (6) financial constraints (minimum rate of return, payback period, etc).

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The use of conventional, circulatory air rotary and fluid rotary, cased and uncased drilling methods in the vicinity of sensitive infrastructure can have deleterious effects on the ground conditions surrounding and supporting structures and the structure itself. Furthermore, the use of these conventional methods offers the engineer or contractor little information about the condition of the subsurface during geotechnical applications. Conversely, sonic drilling measurements and samples can be used to evaluate actual conditions during the progress of exploration and construction across a given site. This paper will discuss the history and properties of sonic drilling and explore case histories of geotechnical applications for the advancement of boreholes within vulnerable structures and on sensitive sites for several recent infrastructure projects ? a tunnel and railroad project, a dam grout curtain project, a bridge micropile exploration project and a tunnel instrumentation project. Project summaries will discuss the advantages realized when the application of sonic drilling techniques demonstrated superior accuracy, quality control, efficiency, productivity, penetrability, waste minimization and adaptability when drilling adjacent to or within existing infrastructure. Finally, the discussion will address the current testing and application of sonic drilling to the installation of micropiles, earth retention anchors, grout injection and instrumentation installation where the quality control benefits provided by the inherent soil cores, measurement while drilling systems, accuracy and non-destructive production drilling features will be advantageous.

The history of mineral processing in general and flotation in particular is long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. Building on the ever-improving fundamental understanding of the underlying science, the most significant trend in flotation has been the putting into practice the learnings from trailblazers such as Professor Fuerstenau that has given the confidence that enabled an ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against global trends such as that of falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. In addition, we see that globally, the social license to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure and, at the very least, is under much more rigorous scrutiny. In this paper, we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10–20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation, as we know it, will change significantly.

"Mine waste storages including tailings dams and waste rock dumps represent arguably the biggest risk on a mine site from both physical and geochemical viewpoints, related firstly to structural stability and the consequences of failure and secondly from potential on-going seepage or run-off of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). The risks are most likely to increase during operations and continue through the closure and post-closure phases, with the waste storages likely to be the most difficult features to resolve in the mine closure process. Contaminated water quality from tailings dams and waste rock dumps can require treatment "in perpetuity" at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The problem is increasing with ever larger mine operations and waste generation volumes. This paper identifies leading practice methodologies in planning and operating mines and process plants to minimise the risks from tailings storages and how this might also affect waste rock management and even the design of mine excavations. These methodologies require a "big-picture" approach to develop an understanding of the overall issues and identify synergies between the different operational areas on a mine site that can reduce overall risk. With a conservative approach and realistic allowance for future costs it is possible to facilitate decisions at the mine planning stage that can reduce risk and save cost over the long term. This is in contrast to the common approach where each operational area is looking to minimise its own costs with a short-term view. Incorrect mine methodologies can be developed by allowing net present value (NPV) accounting methods to trivialise future closure issues.Methodologies discussed include: Integrated Waste Management - Significant structural improvements to tailings dams can be achieved if the structures can be incorporated into the waste rock dumps. Risk of AMD can also be reduced by utilising the tailings and waste rock effectively. This could go even further to consider the placement of wastes to limit mine void environmental issues; Process Optimisation - Water quality and the nature of potential tailings dam structures can be highly influenced by the geo-chemistry of the tailings. This can be modified by processing, where simple changes such as maintaining separate streams of geo-chemically different tailings rather than recombining them or by initiating further processing to remove problematic minerals such as sulphides; Enhancing Geophysical Properties - The geochemical performance of waste repositories can be greatly influenced by the geophysical properties of the stored materials, particularly the air-water characteristics, which are influenced by particle size, density and permeability. The geotechnical properties can be enhanced by strategic paddock dumping, blending and compaction.These methodologies are demonstrated by case histories.CITATION:Brett, D, 2013. "IntroductionTITANIUM is probably the most widely publicized metal today. Much has been written, both in the lay press and the technical press, about its properties and potentialities. In view of the fact that Canada possesses large quantities of titanium-bearing ore, and could conceivably become a major producer of metallic titanium, it was felt that a paper dealing mainly with the physical metallurgy of titanium would be of interest to this Institute. This paper is concerned chiefly with the useful properties of titanium and its alloys and the fundamentals governing the modification of its properties by alloying.Physical Properties of TitaniumTitanium belongs to a family of metals that have been termed 'gas sensitive' (I), because their mechanical properties are altered by certain gases which they readily absorb and retain. Other metals of this group are zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, columbium, tantalum, and chromium. Titanium has a strong affinity for oxygen and nitrogen and once it has absorbed these gases they cannot be removed either by melting in vacuum or by any degassing agent. These gases, when present in excess of about half a per cent oxygen plus nitrogen, render the metal brittle and useless as a structural material.Some of the typical physical properties of titanium are listed in Table I along with those of common structural metals for comparison."

The opportunity to evaluate the pile design procedures used on a major project is an infrequent occurrence. It is even more infrequent that the project involves piles with significant tension and horizontal capacities. This report synopsizes over twenty years of design and construction experience on just such a major pile founded structure. The philosophy governing foundation design procedures is described and discussed. The order and extent of full scale pile testing are evaluated. Principal points in the specifications are established and their effect on construction progress and claims are noted. The report concludes with recommendations for future projects.

Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). Since 1954, much drilling, mapping, and quarrying has been done but there is no published report of this work.The rocks which constitute the Middleback Range, Camel Hill-Cooyerdoo line, Katunga Hill-Iron Knob, and Ash Range (Fig. 1) belong to the Middleback Group of Middle Precambrian or late Archaean age. Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia's geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. This paper presents a comprehensive review of steel sheet piling including internationally manufactured hot rolled sections, their history, applications, installation and driving techniques. The discussion will cover both temporary and permanent installations; temporary piling used in construction of cofferdams with various bracing systems, deep foundation installations for buildings, bridges and tunnels, etc., and permanent piling used for highway, railroad and bridge construction as well as for riverbanks, piers, wharfs and docks, normally required for port facilities. In addition, cofferdams, as self-supporting gravity structures where interlock strength is of prime importance, will be discussed. The design and application of light, intermediate and heavy sections will be presented including heavy combined walls and information on Z-shaped, U-shaped and HZ sections and their corresponding interlocks. Emphasis is placed on new developments for design applications for deep foundations and waterfront structures within the "state of the art".
