Demand for nonfuel minerals depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1984. New housing starts rose to 1.8 million units. Automakers turned out about 15% more cars (7.8 million) and 30% more trucks (3.1 million) than in 1983. Nevertheless, many domestic mineral operations experienced difficulties in 1984. This resulted from import competition greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing and downsizing of motor vehicles. About 15% of our energy was imported. This in cluded $36 billion worth of crude oil and $22 billion in refined products This added significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $12; billion. On the bright side for mining, coal production rose 14% to 810 Mt (890 mil lion st). Three-fourths o: the coal was burned to generate electricity and more than half of our electricity was derived from coal-burning plants. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw minerals, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult. Consequently, our nonfuel minerals trade deficit rose 60% to $19 billion, reflecting imports of $39 billion and exports of $20 billion. There were increased pressures from some major segments of the minerals industry for some form of import protection. But President Reagan said, "Our goal is a system of free and fair trade in goods, services, and capital. We will work toward this goal through both bilateral and multilateral trading agreements." The US minerals industry consists of domestic mines, concentrators, smelters, refineries, mineral manufacturing plants, and recyclers. It also includes many wholly- or partially-owned operations in many parts of the world, providing employment and income for US citizens and others as well. Compared with 1983, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8%, to $23 billion. The $253 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output was a 14% increase. Major Metals Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production-rose 10%, to 84 Mt (93 million st). This stimulated a 36% rise in domestic iron ore production, to 52 Mt (57 million st), about 98% pelletized. Iron ore imports rose 44%, to 14 Mt (15 million st). Despite the increase of steel production, output remained well below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1984 production was still 23% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity remained steady at 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports as a major reason for low domestic capacity. In December, pacts with seven leading steel exporting nations were announced. This is an effort to reduce import penetration to about 18.5% of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 50% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production, at 45 kt (49,500 st), rose threefold. Libby, Montana is the site of a large vermiculite deposit that was mined between 1920 and 1990 to extract vermiculite for commercial applications such as insulation, gardening products, and construction materials. The Libby vermiculite deposit also contains amphibole minerals including tremolite, actinolite, richterite, and winchite. Historically, Libby mine workers experienced high exposures to amphibole structures, and, as a group, have experienced the health consequences of those occupational exposures. It has been suggested that Libby residents also have been and continue to be exposed to amphibole structures released during the vermiculite mining operations and therefore are at increased risk for disease. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted two epidemiological-type studies of residents living in Libby and the surrounding areas to assess these risks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected and analyzed exposure data in Libby and used those data to project risks of asbestos-associated disease for Libby residents. The EPA has placed the Libby Asbestos Site, which includes the mine and the town of Libby, on its National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in need of clean up. This article presents a review of the exposure studies conducted in Libby and an analysis of health risks based on the data collected in those studies. Libby mine workers have experienced elevated levels of asbestos-associated disease as a consequence of their occupational exposures to amphibole structures. (San Francisco Meeting, UCtober, 1911.) THE refinery at the San Francisco Mint takes the bullion purchased by the receiving department, and carrying more than 200 parts of precious metals in 1000, or, in mint parlance; over 200 fine, and separates and refines the various metals contained therein, using electrolytic processes exclusively. Bullion containing silver is treated in cells charged with a nitric electrolyte. These cells produce fine silver and leave a residue rich in gold. The residue from the silver-cells, together with crude gold-bullion, is treated in cells having a chloride electrolyte. These produce fine gold and leave a residue containing silver chloride. The latter is reduced to the metallic state with zinc and is then treated in the silver-cells. The various waste solutions and the wash-waters, after being freed from the bulk of their precious metals, still contain copper and other metals. These are removed by scrap-iron, and are then treated in the copper-cells, having a sulphate electrolyte. These cells produce pure copper, and collect a residue containing lead, some gold and silver, and all the metals of the platinum group that were in the bullion. This residue is relatively small, and is melted into bars and stored until sufficient accumulates to warrant treating it for platinum, etc. The refinery occupies three large and three small rooms. The large ones are, a melting-room, 30 by 34 ft.; a cell-room, 39 by 46 ft.; and a wash-room, 30 by 33 ft. The small rooms are used as foreman's office, laboratory, and generator-room, respectively. The methods here described are those in use in December, 1909, when notes for the present paper were taken.

A new on-line database of literature about copper has been created through a joint undertaking by the Copper Development Association Inc. and PROCOBRE-Chile, with funding provided in part through the International Copper Association, Ltd. The new database will permit Spanish-speaking technologists to access publications maintained by PROCOBRE-Chile by means of standard keyword searches. In addition, a new Spanish- English thesaurus has been written to enable Spanish-speaking individuals to search d access the Technology and Environmental databases of the Copper Data Center, which together comprise more than 80,000 publications dealing with the production, properties, uses and environmental effects of copper. Planned expansion of the new Spanish literature database is described.

It is now five years since the advent of gold-dredging in Australia, the State of New South 'Wales, or colony as it was, being the first to adopt this system of gold-getting, and the credit of its introduction rests with a member of this Institute, Mr. Chas. L. Garland, who commenced operations with his dredge on the Macquarie River, at the junction of the Muckerawa Creek, in the month of March, 1899. In this paper it is intended to give a brief history of the career of the gold dredge in New South Wales from that relate up to the present time, during which period the writer, as a designer of many dredges, has been constantly in touch with the subject in all its phases in this State; the points noted are the outcome of his observation in a general way, and to a great extent are apart from the design proper.Gold-dredging in New South Wales up to the present moment can hardly be designated an unqualified success...

The stability of steep embankments is a major safety issue in open pit mining, highway passes, and earth filled dams. A failure in any one of these situations could mean a loss of very expensive equipment, a long term inconvenience, and more importantly, a loss of life. These possible catastrophes could be avoided by installing a reliable real time monitoring system. Robotic total stations (RTSs) give one possible cost effective solution to creating a near real time monitoring system. Repeated surveys at predetermined time intervals can automatically generate warnings if slope movements exceed a preset tolerance level. The variation in atmospheric refraction, combined with possible instabilities in reference targets, can make a monitoring system based on RTSs produce false alarms. A methodology has been developed at the Canadian Centre for Geodetic Engineering (CCGE) for reducing these systematic error effects. The methodology has been realized in the creation of a software package that has been successfully implemented at large earthen dams in California and at an open pit mine operation in British Columbia.

As fractures are propagated through rocks, energy is absorbed near the extending crack tip. Apparent surface energies for several rocks have been measured by cleavage under dynamic con-ditions. At nominal crack velocities from 0.5 to 500 in (min, measurements showed that fractures propagated in discrete jumps. Calculated surface energies and moduli were relatively insensitive to nominal rate of cleavage. in another set of experiments, rocks were cleaved under high confining stresses. The rocks were submerged in low leak-off fluids which formed a filter cake on the freshly cleaved surfaces (similar to the hydraulic lracturing process). Apparent surface energies were increased substantially as the surrounding fluid pressure was increased. Moduli in bending increased significantly upon application of the first 1,000 psi but were insensitive to stress level at greater pressures. INTRODUCTION For almost 20 years, hydraulic fracturing processes have been utilized effectively to stimulate oil and gas wells. During this period, some process improvements have resulted from studies of fracture orientation, mechanics of fracturing, areas generated, conductivities of cracks, etc. Yet many questions remain concerning the conditions and pressures needed during fracture propagation. In this paper we will report additional studies of the mechanics of fracture extension. It was shown previously3 that large rock samples could be cleaved under controlled conditions so as to measure the apparent surface energy (that amount of energy absorbed per unit area of new surface created). In this paper we consider the effects of two additional factors on surface energies, viz.: (1) effect of cleavage rate and (2) effect of confining stress level. THEORY Cleavage experiments were conducted on rock samples similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Blocks of rock several inches wide, 2- to 3-in. thick, and up to 3 ft in length were grooved longitudinally with shallow guide slots. A crack was initiated and allowed to extend along the web as the top of the rock specimen was pulled (or pushed) apart. Auxiliary equipment permits the measurement of (1) force applied at the top, (2) separation at the top and (3) crack length. (Further experimental details will be given in the next section.) The rock beams created by the crack are considered ton be cantilever beams. The deflection (or separation of the rock beams) at any point is calculated 4,5 by the beam Eq. 1.

The development of a large high grade spodumene orebody, in excess of 30M tonnes containing at least 7M tonnes at 4.0% Li20, by Lithium Australia Ltd at Greenbushes, Western Australia is significantly increasing the world consumption of lithium minerals. The availability of two low cost sources of lithium, spodumene concentrates (7.5% Li20) and glass grade spodumene (4.8% Li20) has been welcomed by the ceramic and glass industries as it assists them to lower their raw material costs at a time when they are facing severe competition from alternative materials. While there is no shortage of lithium reserves in the world, there has been a shortage of high quality lithium minerals. The Lithium Australia development has filled this need. The favourable factors of high grade, low impurities, open cut mining and existing infrastructure make this an ideal low cost source for a long term downstream lithium industry. The Lithium Australia mine development has filled the need for a reliable long term supply of lithium minerals. The long term viability of this resource is ensured by the unique combination of the following key attributes of the development : High grade reserves of 7.OM tonnes of 4.0% Li20 within 130 metres of the surface, contained within a total proven reserve of 30M tonnes of 2.8 % Li20. Open pit mining with stripping ratio of less than 2.5:1 waste:ore. Low impurities levels, particularly in those elements, that have a detrimental effect on the colour of glass/ceramics i.e. iron, manganese, titanium and chromium. An existing mine infrastructure that includes an adequate water supply for all foreseeable processing requirements. A sophisticated spodumene concentrator utilizing statistical process control to produce a consistently high grade product with minimal impurities. A technically qualified stable workforce fully acquainted with spodumene processing techniques. Greenbushes high grade concentrates have found ready acceptance in the specialty ceramic and glass industries during the past four years. The consistency and high grade/low impurity level of the product has enabled its use in the production of television tubes, oven to table ware, glass fibres, specialty glasses and ceramic glazes.

For its Hellyer project, Aberfoyle sought to establish a high degree of confidence in all aspects of the feasibility study. Accurate capital and operating cost estimates were an integral and essential part of the study. They were crucial to the evaluation of investment returns and competitive cost position. Both the capital and operating cost estimates were based on the comprehensive data available from exploratory mine development, pilot plant operation, detailed engineering design, and Aberfoyle's experience in the area. One of the principal project objectives was to maximise operating productivity and efficiencies and this created capital cost alternatives which needed thorough cost-benefit assessment. The estimated capital cost for construction and development was $90 million, and the project was completed virtually on time for $80 million. The first year's experience indicated that operating costs would settle to well within 10% of the estimates.

The Toulon South Tunnel in France is the second part of a project started 20 years ago. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of ?automatic prismless settlement monitoring?. All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, the monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement, by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. The implementation of this observational method application is presented in this paper.

The term" sandstone" is applied to a rock composed of mineral grains smaller than pebbles, cemented together more or less firmly. "Conglomerate" is the name given to a rock composed of pebbles, or pebbles and bowlders, of various sizes cemented together. If the pebbles are large and well rounded the rock is sometimes called " pudding stone." Although the term "sandstone" includes all varieties, certain specific terms are applied to types characterized by particular compositions, colors, or uses. "Quartzite" is a variety in which the individual grains are so firmly cemented together with quartz that the rock will fracture as easily through the grains as through the cement; "ferruginous sandstone" is one rich in iron as cementing material, or as grains, or both; "micaceous sandstone" is one in which mica is prominent; " arkose" is a feldspathic or granitic sandstone composed of angular grains; "calcareous sandstone" is one containing considerable calcium carbonate; and" argillaceous sandstone" is one containing considerable clay. The term "flagstone" is used for a rock that splits readily into sheets suitable for flagging; "freestone" for rock than can be cut or carved readily, and with equal ease in all directions; and" ganistel'," in the United States, for sandstone suitable for the manufacture of refractories. Others are named from their characteristic colors such as " bluestone," " redstone," or " brownstone."

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. The Bond Work Index became a universal standard, and is the most widely used measurement tool for comminution energy consumption. This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributable to accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notes to the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

Two separate secant pile cofferdams were constructed as part of an extensive rehabilitation and modernization of the New York City Transit's Lexington Avenue/Third Avenue IND Station at 53rd Street in Manhattan. Major high rise structures and outpatient hospital facilities bordered the site. The roadway is an important east-west corridor in mid-Manhattan. In order to perform the construction of new escalator and elevator shafts over 250 linear feet of secant wall was installed to the top of rock or to the existing subway roof. Much of the secant wall was constructed from below a temporary roadway decking system using a low headroom rig. The roadway decking system was supported on shallow spread footings. The secant piles were drilled using crawler mounted hydraulic rotary drill rigs. The secant wall provided a watertight, rigid cofferdam that minimized settlement and other disruptions to existing structures and utilities. During later stages of the project the secant wall also supported the roadway decking system.

"Mineral separation by exploiting the differences in mineral or metal specific gravities (sg) has been used since antiquity. In the modern era, this is most commonly seen in the recovery of gold by the use of centrifugal concentrators and the separation of coal (low sg) from waste rock (high sg) using heavy media cyclones and jigs. Other metals, notably oxides of tin and tungsten, are successfully recovered using some combination of jigs, spirals and shaking tables. However, many conventional gravity separation systems are limited to fairly coarse (>1 mm) to medium (>100 micron) particle separations due to the limitations of the gravitational separation forces in conventional equipment.Many of the high specific gravity minerals of interest are friable (e.g. cassiterite, wolframite, etc.) and excessive fines are generated in the grinding/comminution circuits which cannot be recovered with conventional equipment and may be lost directly to the tailings stream. Recent developments in centrifugal gravity separation equipment specifically designed for fine or ultra-fine particle separation and recovery have resulted in heavy mineral particle recoveries as fine as 10-20 microns. Ongoing research work has also identified the benefit of closed-circuit, multi-stage gravity recovery circuits using some combination of centrifugal concentrators and conventional equipment (tables, spirals, flotation, etc.) which can substantially increase overall plant recovery and final concentrate grade.This paper will provide details of the evolution of non-fluidized bed gravity concentrators for high sg mineral recoveries, correlate laboratory scale development work with plant results to confirm scale-up, and show how recent flowsheet developments have contributed to significantly improved plant performance.IntroductionGravity concentration is one of the oldest and most cost effective metal and/or mineral recovery systems, ranging from the classic hand panning of alluvial gold, through to the large scale production of a wide range of metals and minerals, including gold, silver, PGMs, black sands, coal and iron oxides. Conventional gravity recovery systems, comprised of some combination of sluices, spirals, jigs and shaking tables have limited application in fine particle (i.e. <100 microns) recovery, or where there are limited differences in particle specific gravities (sg), e.g. the separation of high sg, high value metal oxides (e.g. those of tin, tantalum or tungsten), from medium sg, lower value metal sulfides such as pyrite and pyrrhotite. These unit operations tend to have limited capacity, and while double and triple turn spirals and multi-deck tables have been developed, extensive floor space is often required in order to process the tonnages incorporated in the modern mineral processing plant."

The studies herein reported were begun as a part of researches undertaken by the United States Geologü;al Survey looking to the more effcient utilization of the coal in the United States through the reduction of waste in its extnidion, and were continued as part of further researches having regard to the conservation of the fuel resources of this country and to the lessening of injuries and fatalities in coal mining. Among other phases of the general problem to be studied were the origin of the gas whidi escapes into coal mines, its modes of occurrence in the coal and rock strata, and the conditions governing its outflow into the mines. The subject of relative danger from destructive explosions due to gas and coal dust in different mines belonging to different coal fields was to be one of the principal lines of investigation. But this work was barely under way when the series of unusually disastrous explosions in the Naomi, .Monongah, and Darr mines of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, in December, 1907, afforded an exceptional occasion to observe the behavior of explosions on a large scale. Because of the opportunities for study afforded by these terrific explosions, the inquiry originally planned was d ¡verted to the more specific investigation of the conditions in tl10SC mines, and the examinations have been directed toward finding those qualities of gas and dust which were concerned in these explosions. The following discussion, therefore, consists essentially of a report on that subject; but it is far from being exhaustive, and is to be regarded as a preliminary outline of investigations which are still in progress. The first of the three mine explosions mentioned occurred in the Naomi mine of the United Coal Company, near Bellevernon, Pa., on Sunday, December 1, at 7.40 p. m. All the men who were within the mine at the time, fortunately only 34, were killed. Less than a week later there occurred in mines Nos. fì and 8 of the Fairmont Coal Company at Monongah, W. Va., the most disastrous mine explosion yet recorded in the annals of American mining. The mines were comparatively new and well laid out. Mine No.8 had been in operation only about two years and was the pride of the Fairmont Coal Company. Mine No.6 was first opened ahout four years earlier. In order to make it possible, in case of emergency, for either mine to be ventilated by the ventilating system of the other, the two sets of workings were connected underground. The F face heading of mine K o. 6 led direetly into No.2 north heading of No.8 mine. On Friday, Dcccmber 6, at about 10.30 in the morning, an explosion of unusual violcnce swept completely through both mines, pursuing its course throughout the numerous ramifications and bursting out of the two pit mouths, located It miles apart, nearly simultaneously. The slope of mine No.6 was only slightly damaged, but at the mouth of No.8 the destruction was very great. The fan was wrecked, the engine house was demolished, and mine timbers were blown across Monongahela River: As nearly as can be determined, 361 men were killed in the two mines by the explosion. .While the inspection of the Monongah mines was still in progress, on Thursday morning, December 19, at about 11.20, a similar explosion wrecked the Darr mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Company ut Jacobs Creek, Pu.; 238 men lost their lives in this explosion, which in number of casualties is second only to the :Monongah disustcr in the history of American mining. Of ull thc men in the mine at the , time of the explosion, only one mun, who happened to be within 100 feet of the ~iUrface on an old manway in a wet, unexploded portion of the mine, succeeded in escaping alive. The underground investigation of these mines was made in cooperation with Clarence Hall and ""Valter O. Snelling, of the United States Geological Survey, and James ""V. Paul, now of the Survey but at that time chief of the department of mines for vVest Virginia, to all of whom the author is greatly indebted for valuable assistance, suggestions, and advice. Mr. Paul will rcport on the nature of these explosions, the precipitating causes, their destructiveness, and the general cüliditions in these mines following the disasters. The present report is confined essentially to the laboratory examination of some of the explosive materials collected from these mines directly ufter the explosions.

"INTRODUCTION Interest in the possibility of using Diesel 6/ engines for haulage power in mining and tunneling is increasing in the United States, owing largely to the reported successful use of Diesel locomotives in European coal mines and to the comparatively recent development of automotive Diesel engines in this country. The extent of this interest has been evidenced to the Bureau of Mines by numerous requests for information as to the factors that must be considered if Diesel engines are to be used safely underground.Proponents of the application of the Diesel engine to underground haulage base their claims for its safety upon a comparison with the gasoline engine, assuming that (1) the carbon monoxide content of Diesel exhaust gas is always low and that (2) fire and explosion hazards from Diesel fuel are minimized because of its low volatility. In these respects the Diesel engine appears less hazardous than the gasoline engine, whose use underground has been discouraged by the Bureau of Mines and other organizations interested in safety in mining. However, such generalizations cannot be accepted as conclusive evidence that safety is inherent in Diesel engines in underground service, as European experience indicates that certain hazards may accompany their use. Such hazards were discussed in a previous publication 7/ that reviews developments in the use of Diesel locomotives in European coal mines.The Bureau of Mines has initiated a study of the hazards that may attend the use of Diesel engines underground to obtain first-hand information that may serve as a basis for recommending sale practices under conditions existing in the United States."
