Blasting practices based on sound engineering principles are well established but the successful application of these practices requires accurate information about the overburden geology and close supervision of the drilling and blasting operations. Good design alone is not sufficient to insure good results, but the process may be difficult to control unless steps are taken to measure the variables and to provide management and the operators with the information they need to establish and maintain control. Satisfactory blasting can be defined as loosening and fragmenting the rock so that it can be handled by the excavating equipment, while at the same time, governmental regulations on air blast and ground vibrations are not violated. Optimum practices achieve these objectives at the lowest combined cost of the drilling and loading operations and the blasting materials. Total system optimization, that is, taking into consideration the effect of fragmentation on the cost of operating and maintaining excavating equipment as well as drilling and blasting costs, probably is not a reasonable goal at the present time.

A blast furnace test of approximately 5,000 tons of PelleTech Corporation (PTC) cold bond pellets was successfully run at Kaiser Steel Corporation (Kaiser) Steel Manufacturing Division at Fontana, California. The pellets were produced from mill scale, BOF dust and blast furnace flue dust. A 15 day base period, during which time the metallic burden was 2/3 heat indurated pellets and 1/3 sinter, preceeded the test. During the test period the metallic bur- den was 10% cold bond pellets, 56.7% heat indurated pellets and 33.3% sinter. A 15 day post test base period followed during which the PTC pellets were replaced by conventional pellets. The pellets were produced in the 3.C Semi-works Facility located on Kaiser property. The facility incorporates the Michigan Technological University Hydro-Thermal Agglomerating Process.

The mining industry, like most other industries, has had a difficult couple of years. What are your thoughts on the industry?s direction in the next few years? I am bullish on our industry. There is no question in my mind that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our past successes in the minerals and mining sector. I am equally certain that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of the rest of the world to attain that same level of lifestyle will depend hugely on our future successes and will be the driver for our industry to continue to excel and prosper. Surely, there are going to be challenges along the way. These challenges are not only from the public, regulators and various governing bodies, but also from our industry?s own self regulating efforts. However, we have demonstrated throughout the past several decades that we have the capability to meet these challenges head on and come out ahead.

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. "The issue of mine worker fatigue is as complex as it is understudied. Generally, worker fatigue lies somewhere on a continuum between psychology and physiology, which makes the measurement and management of it difficult with no easy solutions for operators or workers. Answers to even basic questions remain elusive—such as what is fatigue, how is it measured, and how can organizational resources reduce fatigue—and answers seem to present no single, clear path to action for the health and safety of the worker. This manuscript supplements the growing body of interest in the problems of fatigue in the mining industry by reviewing some of what is known about worker fatigue in general and in the mining industry in particular. The material covered here includes basic topics of the hows and whys of worker fatigue; an overview of fatigue models, findings, and evidence-based solutions with a focus on mining; and potential future directions aimed at mitigating miner fatigue. INTRODUCTION “It is recommended that the whole fatigue test problem be stated in a form the nature of which may be indicated by the following suggestions: that the term fatigue be absolutely banished from precise scientific discussion, and consequently that attempts to obtain a fatigue test be abandoned [emphasis added].” – Bernard Muscio, Pioneer Australian Philosopher and Industrial Psychologist, in a 1921 Report to the Cambridge Industrial Fatigue Research Board Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work, or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetative duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising. On the one hand, mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation, and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a “cookie-cutter” approach. On the other hand, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present alltogether. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining."

Of increasing importance to the student of fuels economics has been the extent to which different primary energy sources can substitute for each other in the various energy markets of the nation. Knowledge of the nature and extent of fuel interchangeability can aid the fuels economist in projecting trends of energy utilization, as well as giving him a better understanding of the past and present conditions of fuel markets. It is also important to the consumer to know just how much flexibility he can maintain in his energy consuming operations. And, finally, various governmental bodies show keen interest in the degree of energy substitutability in determining public policies concerning the fuels industries. The presence of excess fuel production capacity in the United States during the early 1960's indicates that fuel interchangeability should become more prevalent in the increasingly competitive energy markets of the nation. Discussion of fuel intercompetition is almost always restricted to qualitative terms-because of the lack of comparable statistical data, between the different energy sources in geographic or "type-of-use" fuel, markets. There are exceptions, of course, such as, the excellent fuel consumption data which are available on steam electric generating plants throughout the nation. In other sectors, statistics are at best incomplete.' Inmost instances, indirect fuel consumption indicators, such as sales of fuel burning equipment, are extensively used to measure market shares of a particular fuel; however, these indicators are hard to evaluate precisely without prior knowledge of the total competitive market.

The abstract discusses the extraction of silica from nickel laterite ore using a hydrothermal process with sodium hydroxide. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and NaOH-to-ore ratio on silica extraction were investigated. The optimal conditions were determined, achieving over 98% silica extraction. The mechanism involves the reaction of Si in lizardite and quartz with sodium hydroxide, forming sodium silicate solution. Other metals like Mg, Fe, and Ni are enriched in the residue.

Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão Mine in Brazil. They are predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and, less frequently, yellow apatite. The chemical compositions of these types of apatite were determined by electron microprobe analysis and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Blue and green apatite responded well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite has the lowest phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5 ) content and largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) grades and lowest substitution level.

The passage of an ore pulp through the froth flotation process results in the production, after dewatering, of a finely divided concentrate. This intermediate product Trust be handled to the subsequent process facilities via belt or other types of conveyors, hoppers, bins, chutes and feeders, and the like, Flotation concentrate has some difficult handling properties such as abrasiveness, sluggishness when moist, or fluidity when dry, These characteristics require the judicious selection or design of handling, equipment and the careful engineering of transfer chutes. It is to the special problems which are encountered in this in-plant handling procedure that this paper is addressed. The methods which will be discussed have beer. developed primarily for the handling of the froth flotation concentrates of copper, leap, and taconite iron ores, but may be generalized, with appropriate modifications, to apply to other similar metallic concentrate&. The controlled feeding of concentrates frog: bins and hoppers is covered alone with some of the techniques used to transfer concentrates from ore belt conveyor to another. Methods are described for unloading belt conveyors into bins or storage tiles, The reclamation from storage piles is also treated.

The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The adhesion of Leptospirillum ferrooxidans bacterial cells onto the sulfide minerals pyrite and chalcopyrite was evaluated using two different physical-chemical approaches; thermodynamic and extended DLVO theory. For the parameters incorporated into calculations, the zeta potentials and contact angles of powdered solids and bacterial cells were acquired experimentally. The Hamaker constants essential for Lifshitz-van der Waals inter-action calculations were calculated following two different methods: macroscopic and microscopic. Adsorption tests were carried out at physiologic conditions to estimate the amount of cells adsorbed onto a mineral surface and the extent of alteration of that mineral surface in biobeneficiation. The free energy of adhesion was found to be negative for both minerals, indicating that the adhesion is energetically favored and preferred. The interaction energy diagrams of the total interacting force was also negative for the cases where the particles were charged oppositely; in the remaining cases, the total force was attractive after overcoming an energetic barrier caused by the repulsive electrostatic forces. Under the conditions of the adsorption test, the experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical; this suggests that the physical-chemical forces are crucial for bacterial adhesion.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. Within the last few years, there have been numerous techno-logical advancements within material handling due, in part, to the introduction of conveying systems and mobile material handling systems to the industry. Although the traditional material handling methods are still commonly used, the introduction of conveyors to the industry has provided companies with some very efficient and economical options. These "new" systems change with the industry to accommodate rigorous demands, ease of operation, and low operating cost requirements. The number of mobile material handling systems utilized in mining operations is increasing, especially in heap leaching applications. Ten years ago, mobile material handling systems like Mobile Stacking Conveyors (MSC) were considered a novelty. There were two (2) MSC's in actual operation and only one of those in a heap leaching application. Today there are numerous proven systems operating at mine sites around the world-La Coipa, Zaldivar, Florida Canyon, Cananea, El Abra, Chuquicamata, and Radomiro Tomic. The popularity of mobile systems is due to the benefits realized by individual projects. As technology advances, so do the concepts behind mobile material handling systems. Implementing self leveling mechanisms, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Global Positioning Systems to control the equipment are just a few of the recent advances that will be discussed in this paper. We will also discuss current proven systems, and touch on what we see as some of the future advances.

Manganese (Mn) ferroalloys are chiefly consumed in the steelmaking process as a deoxidizing agent or as an alloying element to produce high-quality steels. These alloys are typically produced in a submerged arc furnace using coke, fluxes and manganese ores of a specific manganese/Fe (Mn/Fe) ratio. Preferred-grade manganese ores should have Mn content greater than 46 percent and Mn/Fe content greater than 5 to produce commercial-grade, high-carbon ferromanganese [1]. Selective mining of high-grade Mn resources has created a scarcity of these resources, which is emerging as a major challenge for the manganese and steel industry. Manganese ore resources are mainly distributed in South Africa, with about 32 percent; Ukraine, with about 17 percent; Australia, with about 17 percent; and Brazil, India, China, Gabon and Mexico, with lesser amounts.

Microcomputer technology has begun to revolutionize petroleum engineering. Petroleum engineers' use of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC's) is likely to continue expanding rapidly. Since 1982 SPE's Microcomputer Applications Committee has developed a Society-wide users group, a bi-monthly newsletter (MICROCOMP NEWS), an SPE Short Course, a hardware and software distribution program, and a world wide electronic network (SPE NET). The purpose of this paper is to share SPE's experience in creating a dynamic program for meeting the individual member's need in the application of microcomputers to petroleum engineering. My hope is that this will encourage other engineering and scientific organizations to provide similar programs for their members.

The shipment of coal, ores, and minerals in bulk form during the winter months presents a difficult problem in emptying rail cars. U. S. Steel Research in cooperation with U. S. Steel Coal Operations bas laboratory tested and field monitored the effectiveness of using freeze conditioning agents (FCA) to minimize the frozen coal problem. This report examines, in an overview manner, our experience after four seasons of treatment using different FCA agents on raw and preparation plant products. Our observations indicate that if an FCA is applied correctly it is effective mineral to mineral. Freezing problems still occur at the interface between the coal and the metal of the car sides and bottoms. Leading chemical suppliers have made positive improvements in their FCA formulations with second and third generation products. Further advances are needed to make chemical treatment for the prevention of frozen coal a real full-proof method.

This paper discusses the recently completed organizational development research project, which was addressed to the underground mining industry. The three specific purposes of the project were as follows: (a) to determine whether Organizational Development approaches are feasible in the mining industry, (b) to provide a demonstration that Organizational Development methods can successfully contribute to the safety of underground mines, and (c) to compare the efficacy of classical Organizational Development methods, which are highly trainer- intensive, with trainer-nonintensive management development approaches. The term "Organizational Development" (OD) is here broadly defined as a management intervention for the purpose of assisting an organization with the solution of problems, which are seen by the organization as important. More specifically, we can define OD as a planned effort to improve the effectiveness of an organization through (a) team building and problem solving, which concentrates on the issues of immediate concern to the organization, and (b) efforts to improve organizational communication at all levels of the organization.

High temperature, methane, dust and other disasters are getting more serious with mining depth getting deeper and the development of mechanization in underground mines. An application of a descensional ventilation to a coalface is one of the effective measures to solve the above problemes. The descensional ventilation is an venttilation that an airflow in a coalface wouuld downflow along an inclination of a coalface and the direction of the airflow is the same as coalflow. Since 1960's, the descensional ventilation has been applied to 171 coalfaces in 46 coal mines of 23 coal mine administrations in China, such as Pingdingshan , Zhongliangshan, Pubai, Huangshi coal mine administrations. Among the 171 coalfaces, there were 104 coalfaces taking 60.8% in gently inclined seam. The coalfaces in inclined seam and steep seam were individually taking 18.7 % and 20.5 %. There were 77 coalfaces taking 45 % of the total in low gassy coal mines and coal and methane outburst mine were individually taking 17% and 38%. There were 141 coalfaces taking 82.5% of the total in potential danger of dust explosion. There were 125 coalfaces taking 73.1% of the total in potential danger of spontaneous combustion. Therefore, the descensional ventilation can be used in coalfaces under different conditions in China. The practice at home and abroad shown that the application of the descensional ventilation to coalfaces has obvious results in dust control, temperature control, preventing methane accumulation at top corner angle and control of spontaneous combustion in goaf. To more safely and reliably apply the descensional ventilation to coalface and to provide a way for the development of mine ventilation technology in China, the paper will have discussions on the following problems: METHANE EMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION AT COALFACE WITH DESCENSIONAL VENTILATION Methane emission in a coalface with a descensional ventilation is an argued issue for many years. Base on the coal practice, special similar model tests and researches in China, the followings are our main comments. The Descensional Ventilation can Reduce the Methane, Accumulation at the Top Corner Angle. The measurements in six coalfaces with the downward airflow in Qinhemen Mine, Fuxin Coal Mine Administrations shown that the methane concentration at the top corner angle is often up to l% when the coalface has the upward, airflow. The max. methane concentration at the top corner angle is about 0.49 to 0.7% when the coalface has the descensional ventilation. Therefore, with the descensional ventilation, it basically solved the overlimited gas concentration at the top corner angle which is a potential danger to coal production. Because the direction of upfloating gas is opposite to the direction, of the descensional airflow, the descensional ventilation; could increase a turbulent flow mixing capacity of the methan gas and air, and reduce a possibility of methane; accumulation. Due to an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the descensional ventilation lower than an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the, ascensional ventilation, a less methane quantity will release from goat at the descensional ventialtion. It should be pointed out that due to a higher air leakage at ascensional ventilation and the direction of the air; leakage same to the direction of the natural upfloating methane in goaf, those will cause a large methane; accumulation at the top of the goaf and easy bring about, methane accumulation and overlimited methane concentration at the top corner angle with an ventilation vortexflow at the top corner angle. On the other hand, because the direction of the upfloation force function is upward, the descentional ventilation could minimize as possibility of methane accumulation at top corner angle in coal with the descensional ventiltion.

This study was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to better understand rock-mass behavior in longwall coal mines in highly stressed, bump-prone ground. The floor-heave and nofloor- heave phenomena at a western US coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria (i.e., Mohr–Coulomb or Hoek–Brown failure criterion). The previous numerical study demonstrated these phenomena using a user-defined model of the s-shaped brittle failure criterion in conjunction with a spalling process in the FLAC3D numerical modeling software. The results of the FLAC3D modeling agreed with the observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system. However, the FLAC3D model adopted many assumptions and simplifications that were not very realistic from a physical or mechanical perspective. To overcome the limitations of the FLAC3D model, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. The effect of stress rotation in the mining-induced stress field was considered by using a different geometry of rock fractures in the coal seam. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) were also considered by using Monte Carlo simulations. Consequently, the 3DEC models using the DFN technique resulted in predictions of floor heave that agreed with observations of the relative amounts of heave from each gate-road system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft).
