"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."

SEVERAL categories of storage are used depending on capacity. Operational storage, which is small in comparison with the market, facilitates handling surges of a few hours' or a few days' duration. Seasonal storage, usually larger, permits accumulation of product during sea- sons when demand is low, for delivery when demand is high. In producing areas, large storage may permit production at a uniform rate, without waste or distress sale. Near large markets such storage increases the efficiency of transportation, allows a more extensive or higher grade market to be served, and affords protection against interruption in delivery.

Two flat-lying trona seams 3-to 3.5-m thick, approximately 10 m apart, and at depths of 250 m are mined by room-and-pillar at OCI's Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. Long-term stability with minimal subsidence is needed for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. This was investigated by computer modeling in 1990. Although results of the study indicated good long-term stability, recommendations were made for stress determinations to verify the model. Stress determinations made in 1997 showed pillar stresses 10% to 20% higher than the model stresses, and barrier pillar stresses 10% to 15% lower. This implies that higher panel stresses will be transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. A stability evaluation of the lower seam is planned before two-seam mining to assess entry widths and support requirements.

"A fundamental understanding of flame propagation characteristics through and around obstacles is needed to accurately model methane driven longwall coal mine explosions originating or propagating in the gob. Experimental investigations of methane flames in horizontal cylindrical reactors with simulated gob (i.e. rock piles) were carried out alongside coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion simulations. Stoichiometric methane-air mixtures were ignited in semi-open reactor vessels of 5cm, 9.5cm and 71cm diameter, all with a fixed length to diameter (L/D) ratio of 8.6. This was done both with empty reactors and also with a rock pile placed at the open end of the reactor. The rock pile length to reactor length ratio was fixed at 0.3, and the rock pile height to reactor diameter ratio was fixed at 0.33 for all reactors. The smaller two reactor experiments were modeled with ANSYS Fluent in 2D. Experimental results indicate that for this geometry a similar acceleration mode occurs across scales: that the flame speeds up an average of 40% as it passes over a rock pile with this profile. The model is able to capture several important features of the experimental results, including the significant increase in velocity, the speedup ahead of the rock pile, and the leveling off of the empty tube flame front propagation velocity. INTRODUCTION Explosions in underground coal mines are among the largest industrial explosions, known to result in the rapid combustion of 20m3 of fuel gas or more [1,2] Coal beds hold methane gas under pressure, and when the pressure is relieved through mining activity some of this methane is released. The methane then mixes with ventilation air and, if not sufficiently diluted, may form a combustible mixture, which may result in an explosion. Several large coal mine explosions have occurred around the world recently. These include the 2014 Soma Mine disaster in Turkey that killed 301 people [3], and the 2009 Heilongjiang Mine explosion in China that killed 108 [4]. Other recent mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine that caused 29 fatalities [5], have demonstrated that explosive gases can accumulate and ignite within and around the gob area of a longwall coal mine and then expand into the active mining face and nearby areas, endangering workers and equipment. If enough combustible gas is involved, the initial flame can accelerate, eventually transitioning from deflagration to detonation [6]. Researchers are developing a fundamental understanding of the evolution of the explosion process from the laminar kernel to the fully turbulent regime, and its propagation through obstacles such as those found in the gob. Researchers also studied the initial development of methane flames and the potential for the development of a detonation."

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design to improve copper extraction from refractory copper oxide ore were investigated. Based on single factor tests, quadratic polynomial equation to describe the relationship between influencing factors (particle size, leaching temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time) and copper leaching rate could be obtained by RSM. The optimum parameters determined by the model are as follows: particle size 64.60% − 74 μm, leaching temperature 74.15 °C, sulfuric acid concentration 0.49 mol/L, and leaching time 140.85 min. Under these conditions, experimental copper leaching rate of 85.12% could be achieved, which was very close to the predicted maximum value (85.34%) by the model, indicating the quadratic polynomial model was accurate and reliable. Copper leaching rate increased approximately by five percentage points comparing to the result of single factor tests. This study indicates that response surface methodology is an effective method to optimize experiment conditions and achieve an ideal experiment result.

The mining and processing of basic metals relies on water as a medium for transport. Metallurgical ores are ground, concentrated, leached and refined in an aqueous medium. Water is used for temperature control during processing and in air pollution abatement during smelting. All of these process steps result in liquid wastes. Many of the aqueous wastes from ore processing areas become the raw product for a second stage and water recycling may begin. The point at which water recycling or reuse has been initiated in the past, rather than water discharge, was where water conservation was manditory due to a shortage, where process conditions would allow or benefit from reuse, and where economic considerations demanded reuse. The Fontana, California plant of Kaiser Steel Corporation is an example of an integrated steel plant that was forced to practice water conservation and reuse due to its location in an arid environment.1 Only a small amount of water required to maintain the water reuse system in balance with respect to dissolved solids and product quality is discharged. The Butte, Montana copper ore processing plant of The Anaconda Company obtains 66% of the water required for production by recycling, after clarification and chemical treatment, 30 MGD of wastewater from its tailings ponds. This operation is estimated to save the company about $1200/day over a once through water system.2 Here plant location and economics favored water reuse.

In North America, pipelines move more material than any other form of transportation. 1 Pipelines have been used principally for the transportation of liquids and gases; however, slurry pipelines have made notable gains in recent years enabling solid materials to be moved efficiently by pipelines. The obvious advantages of pipe-lines --low maintenance, low operating costs, minimal impact on the environment, greater land use, low labor intensity, safety and high operating factor --have stimulated researchers in England, West Germany, Japan, USSR and the USA during the past ten years to develop pneumatic capsule pipelines for the movement of bulk materials in large quantities. As a result of this work, pneumatic capsule pipelines are now available for the movement of dense bulk materials. Through these pneumatic capsule pipelines, material is moved in wheeled capsules which are pushed through the pipeline by flowing air. In this paper, a capsule pipeline system developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology and Tubexpress Systems, Inc. of Houston, Texas is discussed. The Tubexpress System Major Components The pipe used for a Tubexpress capsule system is standard thin wall welded steel pipe. Since pressures in the system generally do not exceed one atmosphere, the controlling design criteria for wall thickness of the pipeline is pressure from the overburden of the backfill if the line is buried or the structural requirements for supporting itself and the load if it is suspended or supported on piers. A comprehensive flotation study has been carried out on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University. The results are compared with that of a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4-S% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity content than that produced by up to six stages when a conventional mechanical cell is used. The results also show that the packed column flotation process is particularly suitable for recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

Underground instrumentation and observations at longwall panels have demonstrated that the growth of main roof causes an extremely high roof weighting on the shields. It can sometimes result in catastrophic effects on the support when the roof weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on characteristics of main roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations, based on the monitored shield data, theoretical analysis, and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed in detail to define main roof failure modes and understand the maximum roof weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield initial setting condition and the final failure mode of the main roof.

Most coal mine roofs in the Appalachian region consist of laminated shale, which is prone to brittle failure. Accurate modeling of shale roofs is vital for studying cutter failures of these shale roofs, and ordinary and formational bedding planes play a significant role in the response off the shale roof to mining-induced stresses. This paper presents a robust method for constructing three-dimensional shale roof models using limited borehole cores and leveraging image processing techniques. The approach begins with image extraction from shale cores. Then, we extract the portions that feature the core and employ image-stitching techniques to merge them seamlessly. Once the images are stitched, they are duplicated horizontally and merged to create a cross-sectional plane image representing a shale roof. This roof cross-sectional plane image serves as an input to our proprietary Digital Image Processing (DIP) algorithm, which is adept at extracting ordinary bedding planes (interfaces that represent color transitions between a single shale unit). The extraction process involves transforming discrete core points (ordinary bedding plane pixels) into continuous lines representing ordinary bedding planes. Finally, extending this method into the third dimension, the model is further extrapolated to form a comprehensive three-dimensional shale roof. Through this process, the geometry information of ordinary bedding planes can be extracted for each type of shale in cores, including sandy shale, gray shale, dark shale, etc. This work bridges the gap between limited core data and comprehensive 3D geological modeling, offering valuable insights into identifying and quantifying the variations in different shale roof geologies.

Ground water, one of Florida's most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world's largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

The mobility of gold and silver metals from refractory ores is very low due to free metal ions in their bodies that bind the transportable and free metal molecules or they are encapsulated in minerals such as sulfides, arsenosulfides, carbonaceous, and clayey materials which make it difficult to extract them. As known from the literature, the enrichment of oxide refractory gold, silver ores, Ag, and Au-rich flotation concentrated from sulfur refractory ores can be leached in the chloride-hypochlorite solutions. In this work, the leaching approach was studied to extract silver ions from refractory ores in the presence of hypochlorite media under high pressure. The mineralogical and scanning electron microscopy analysis of the sample indicated that the silver was encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals in fine sizes. In order to obtain the optimum leaching conditions for the silver ore, the effects of several parameters, namely, temperature, leaching time, NaCl and NaOCl concentration, solid ratio, and particle size on the leaching recovery were investigated in detail. The leaching experiments showed that the highest silver recovery of 62.35% was obtained under the following conditions: temperature of 150 °C, oxygen pressure of 1800 kPa, leaching time of 2 h, concentrations of 2 mol/dm3 and 0.4 mol/dm3 for NaCl and NaOCl, respectively, the solid ratio of 30%, and particle size (d80) 15 μm. The results obtained from this study indicated that the enrichment of refractory silver ores to extract the silver encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals could be possible in the chlorite-hypochlorite under high pressure, a relatively shorter leaching time compared to conventional cyanide leaching.

The use of finite element programs for evaluating large grinding mill shells is becoming increasingly popular. However, large scale, detailed analysis can become a burdensome task when one is required to manually prepare the necessary data to be entered into the program, while evaluating the voluminous results is even more devastating. Although available computerized finite element analyses can reduce computation time from years to months or even weeks, additional pre and post processors can reduce the time for data preparation and result evaluation to hours, while simultaneously reducing the probability of human error. Examples of the uses of these processors are presented as well as typical modeling techniques.

By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

INTRODUCTION The two unit operations in cut-and-fill stoping that would benefit most from increased mechanization are drilling blastholes and moving broken ore to the ore¬passes. Drilling in current practice is done with hand¬held jackleg and stoper drills. Broken ore is commonly moved from the face to the orepass by a small slusher. This type of equipment can be easily moved through the raises. Hand-held drills have a slow drilling rate and require one operator for each machine. Drilling can be done much faster by small jumbo-mounted machines as two or more drills can be operated by one miner. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units move broken ore from the face to one or more orepasses at a much faster rate with less loss and dilution than slushers. These units are mobile and may be used at more than one place during a shift. The problem which must be overcome in applying this higher degree of mechanization is the restricted means of access inherent in current practices. Cut-and¬fill methods are usually applied to mining veins that are narrow, irregular in dip and strike, or where ground con¬ditions require the support of sand fill. The mechanized equipment which is needed to accomplish high produc¬tion cannot be raised or lowered through raises without being disassembled. A jumbo which will give the desired performance would be mounted on a rubber-tired carriage with a diesel engine for propulsion. Twin hydraulic booms run by a small air motor would carry pneumatic drills. Over¬all dimensions of the unit would be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in width, and 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in height. An LHD of the desired capacity would be rubber¬tired and either diesel or electric-powered. The overall dimensions of a 2.3-m (3-cu yd) unit will be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.8 m (6 ft) in width, and 1.5 m (5 ft) in height. It will weigh about 12 700 kg (28,000 1b). It can readily be seen that conventional raises can¬not handle this size equipment. The most desirable means of access enables equipment to be driven into the stoping areas. Ramps can enter the stope by being driven upward in the vein walls or by being developed in the vein on top of the fill as the stope advances. This ramp system not only permits the use of rubber-tired equipment in multiple working places but also enables its removal for repairs without component breakdown. In the proposed method, as in conventional cut-and¬fill stoping, sand fill will replace the mined-out ore. By constructing an inclined timber floor at one end of the stope, a ramp can be maintained on top of the fill and advanced as the stope is advanced cut by cut (Fig. 1). The ramp is, therefore, developed during the stoping process and is only driven as a tunnel when rising over and around the sill and crown pillars. A stoping section consists of three blocks of different geometric shapes. The first and last blocks to be mined will be triangular in the plane of the vein, and the blocks between will have the shape of parallelograms (Fig. 1). The first block will develop the initial ramp by breast stoping and filling to the ramp floor (Fig. 2). The ramp will need to be completed through to the next level be¬fore stoping of the subsequent block can begin. The subsequent blocks are mined by back stoping with the next ramp being developed at the other end of that block (Fig. 3). The length of each subsequent block can be varied without changing the slope of the ramp. As the new ramp is developed, the previous ramp is filled along with the stope cut. Access up and down is maintained through the stope. The final block is again breast stoped as no new ramp will be developed at the end line for jumbo egress. Boreholes provide ventilation between levels as well as utility access. They can also provide a secondary escapeway for personnel during periods of development. These boreholes would be located about 3 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) in the footwall and spaced about 183 m (600 ft) apart along the vein. The orepasses are spaced about 61 m (200 ft) apart in the vein. This spacing allows not only a short tram for the LHD unit but also provides surge capacity for the ore between haulage trains. These passes are raised from the haulage levels. As development progresses, the raises are driven through the sill pillar, and then car¬ried in the fill as stoping progresses. Ventilation and utilities can be maintained through an orepass when it is not needed for ore. The end line orepasses are intended for this purpose as well as for personnel emergency egress. Overall dimensions and criteria assumed to illustrate the ramp method of access in a highly mechanized cut¬and-fill stope are: haulage level spacing of 61 m (200 ft); ramp gradient of 17%; average dip of approximately 1.57 rad (90°); initial stope length of 358 m (1177 ft); subsequent stope length of 179 m (588 ft); average stoping width of 3 m (10 ft) ; sill pillar thickness of 3.6 m (12 ft); crown pillar thickness of 1.8 m (6 ft); bored raises of 1.5-m (5-ft) diam; and cribbed orepasses of 1.2 x 1.2 m (4 x 4 ft) through the sill pillar and 1.2 m (4 ft) square inside the cribbed portion. DEVELOPMENT The ramp access system lends itself well to conduct¬ing the several phases of development concurrently. A massive slide at Bingham Canyon wiped out a side of the pit and covered the main haul road in and out of the pit. All pre-slide mine designs and schedules were no longer valid. New designs and schedules needed to be developed quickly to provide management with information regarding the immediate post-slide production potential and the time needed to ramp back up to full production. At the time of the slide, an effort was already underway to convert Bingham?s in-house Medium Term Scheduling Process to MineSight®?s Schedule Optimizer (MSSO). One of the main reasons for doing this was to reduce the time needed to produce Medium Term Schedules at Bingham, which involves a complex shovel-based scheduling approach with shovel productivities based on shovel type and the types of mining cuts to which the shovel is assigned over each planning period. The objective of the schedule was to maximize shovel usage, satisfy mill feed requirements of four SAG mills with variable milling rates, and have flexibility in setting truck constraints. This paper will describe how the new MSSO-based mine scheduling process met the challenge of producing new schedules for Bingham in a minimal amount of time.

History Leaching of sulfide ore was first attempted by the Phelps Dodge Corporation about 1900 at Bisbee, Arizona, when Dr. James Douglas conducted experiments in an attempt to apply the leaching techniques then in use at Rio Tinto, Spain. Although this initital attempt was unsuccessful, research work was continued which culminated in successful leaching operations at Tyrone, New Mexico, in 1917 and at Bisbee beginning in 1920. Leaching has continued intermittently since that date, with material from the Lavender Pit being leached today. The Lavender Pit Leach Dump Stripping for the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, with mining operations on stream in 1954 and continuing to the present. All material removed from the pit has been classified as waste, leach material, milling ore, or direct smelting ore, depending upon grade and degree of oxidation. Lavender Pit leach material has been stockpiled in a single dump, called No. 7 Dump. This dump covers an area of approximately 135 acres and average about 300 feet in height. The dump has been deposited over a period of 20 years by truck haulage and contains several layers, each of which has a permeable boulder layer at the bottom and a compacted layer at the top. Leaching of Lavender Pit material was started in 1956 and has proceeded simultaneously with dump construction.
