Artesian pressures of unusual magnitude occur in the deeper aquifer units beneath a considerable part of southeastern North Carolina and extend into South Carolina. The high pressures were first observed in 1968 in wells near Wilmington that were drilled to "basement" rock and which were screened between depths of about 260 to 300 m (meters). The pressure was recognized by Peek and Heath1 as an anomalous geo-pressure and unrelated to recharge conditions in the region. Since 1973, much new information has been obtained on hydro-geologic conditions in the area and a preliminary report on the deep artesian pressures was published in 1975.2 Most of the basic information has been obtained from groundwater research stations constructed by the Groundwater Section of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Economic Resources as a part of Ground-water studies in the Coastal Plain Region. These stations consist of an exploratory well drilled to basement rock with wells completed in each principal aquifer unit to provide data on aquifer characterestics, water levels and water quality.

"Further, we search for the veins by observing the hoar-frosts, which whiten all herbage except that growing over the veins, because the veins emit a warm dry exhalation which hinders the freezing of the moisture, for which reasons such plants appear rather wet than whitened by the frost," Georgius Agricola, De Re Metallica, 1556 In view of Agricola's statement, made in 1556, the concept of using the heat released by oxidizing sulfides as an ore guide can hardly be considered a product of twentieth-century technology. In fact, thermal exploration has received relatively little attention in modern times compared to other potential field geophysical methods. There have evolved, however, two basic approaches to thermal exploration for subsurface heat sources. These are 1) the measurement of surface temperatures by infrared, thermal imagery and 2) the measurement of geothermal gradients in exploratory drill holes.

This study is carried out in the Zenit mining concession, which is located in the city of San Pablo in the department of Cajamarca in Peru. The Project has 33 mineralized structures and according to laboratory analyzes we have the presence of gold and silver. The geostatistical evaluation provides an analysis on the distribution of precious metals in the vein. This information is used to improve the efficiency of metal extraction and to reduce costs. The general objective is to evaluate the polymetallic veins (Au and Ag), for which the classification of resources (measured, indicated, and inferred) has been carried out, taking into account the parameters of minimum distance from the composite, corresponding volume and tonnage calculation. In addition, an inventory of estimated geological resources was carried out with the block grades obtained to generate the tonnage-grade curves.

In cold regions rinsing of spent cyanide leach heaps is stopped during winter and is resumed again after snow melts. The effect of this idle time on the overall cyanide removal process was studied in this work. Samples were collected for rinsing tests from one heap at the Ryan Lode Mine of Citigold Alaska, Inc., near Fairbanks. The material was tested for cyanide removal a large column, 1.22 m high by 20 cm square, and in a small column, 1.22 m high by 10 cm in diameter. The rinse water was analyzed at regular intervals to determine the rate of cyanide removal from the solids. It was found that diffusion plays a major role in the removal of cyanide from the ore particles. Calculations showed that the insulating effect of the snow cover on the heap provides an excellent moderates the interior temperature of the heap, and would be expected to help the progress of the diffusion reaction during winter. The result expected result wil1 be higher cyanide values reporting to the rinse water after snow-melt.

I welcome this opportunity to speak before the Coal Division of the AIME in such an attractive setting as the Pacific Northwest. With the development of the Centralia project, the Pacific Northwest will have its first major coal-fired thermal electric generating plant. This State has a long history of coal mining that diminished with the passage of coal-fired steamships and locomotives but is now reviving with the growth of electrical power demand. Because this 1,400 row plant is to be supplied with surface-mined coal, it is particularly appropriate that this area be the setting for a talk on factors influencing the growth of surface coal mining in the West. During the course of my talk, I will touch on a number of factors including electric power demand, coal resources, production trends, environmental considerations and trends in State and Federal activities that I feel will influence surface coal mining in the West. Total electric power consumption by the year 2000 is expected to reach 9.4 trillion kilowatt-hours. Predictions of total coal consumption for electric power generation by that year range from a low of 845 million tons to a high of 1,520 million tons, or 2.6 to 4.7 times the amount used for this purpose in 1970.

Since 1980 a number of significant changes have been introduced at Palabora in an effort to offset the effects of reduced product price and increased unit costs of production. These changes and improvements include major equipment rationalization programs, the introduction of trolley-assisted truck haulage, adoption of a sophisticated computerized truck control system, pit design enhancements, improved drilling practices, use of emulsion explosives, and the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying system. The various changes, their effect on the operation, and their contribution to cost reduction and improved productivity at Paihbora are considered.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.

The movement of solid particles in a liquid represents an area of interest in many fields of science and technology. Knowledge of the behavior and characteristics of solid-liquid suspensions is of great importance to many areas of mineral processing. In order to characterize a solid-liquid system, the following factors must usually be considered: a) density of the liquid b) rheological properties of the liquid c) density of the solid particle d) size and shape of the solid particle e) volume fraction of solid particles f) relative motion of solid particles and liquid phase Other variables such as the effect of the containing vessel walls, Brownian movement, inter-particle friction, fluid slip and electrostatic effects, are important in special circumstances. Thus it is evident that a complete theoretical treatment is not possible covering all situations. Studies of the kinematic behavior of solid particles in a liquid have been approached by two methods: 1) Assessing the movement of a single particle and extrapolating to a multi-particle system; 2) Modifying the continuum mechanics of single-phase liquids in such a way as to account for the presence of solid particles. The first approach in general utilizes the method of particle mechanics. Extension to a multi-particle system gives rise to very complicated mathematical computation. The creeping motion equations do, however, furnish a practical, useful basis for achieving a uniform treatment and a better understanding of the phenomena. This approach is useful in the study of sedimentation and hindered settling processes.

In May 1975 the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to develop a Hydrominer modification to a long-wall shearer unit, wherein the rotating pick-laced drums and connecting gear drives are replaced by a water jet cutting head.1 The concept of the water jet cutting head is based on using the high localized energy of the water jets to isolate a slice of coal by cutting a slot under, at the back of, and at the top of the web. The plow blade of the head then advances into the cut and wedges the pillar over onto the conveyor (Figure 1). There were several potential advantages foreseen for the system of which perhaps the most significant were the elimination of coal dust from the working area2 and the ability, with a variation in nozzle geometry, to cut webs of greater depth with a small increase in equipment horsepower. The University initially designed the head, based on experiments carried out in the laboratory, under an earlier Bureau of mines contract. The experiments showed that it was more advantageous to work at a pressure of 10,000 psi with an estimated flow rate of 50 gpm than go to the higher pressures and lower flow rates which have been advocated elsewhere.

A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover NaOH and to reduce its content in red mud. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and goes through press filters, which enables the recovery of NaOH and decreases the moisture content. It is well known that red mud is one of the most important sources of scandium. For this reason, the goal of this work was to characterize a Brazilian red mud (BRM) for scandium recovery. The sample was collected after the press filter system process. Analysis of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed. Microwave digestion using an acid mixture was carried out to determine the concentration of the main elements. Fe2O3 represented 40% of the BRM, and the Sc concentration was 43 mg/kg. The SiO2 content was 24%, which is the highest value found in the literature, whereas the sodium concentration was the lowest. A literature review was carried out to compare results with BRM, as well as the current studies for recovery of scandium by the leaching/ion-exchange process. Scandium recovery using a leaching/ion exchange process may be possible with efficiency higher than 90%. The greatest challenge is the occurrence of silica gel formation during leaching.

A 16.5-kt/day underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in Northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. A gravity block caving method has been selected for mining the ore. Access to the mine will be through a service shaft, development shaft, and a conveyor decline. The shafts are being sunk under contract and the conveyor decline is being driven by Molycorp. The driving of the decline began in February, 1979 with a 10-man mining class. By the first of May, enough men had been trained to begin a continuous operation and by March 1, 1980 the face had reached the 1500 m mark. The heading is being driven with trackless rubber-tired equipment using a three-boom drill jumbo, 2.7 m3 LHD units and 7.3 m3 trucks. Ground support has been by rock bolts and wire mesh, followed by Fibercrete. A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity - 9 Gg of molybdenum per year - to be reached in 1984.

Multivariate cluster analysis, MANOVA, canonical analysis, and discriminant analysis of hydrochemistry data were used to investigate the directions of ground water movement in basalts in the vicinity of the Hanford Reservation, Washington. The statistical analyses indicate that the hydrochemistry of the ground waters in these basalt formations is distinctly different on each side of the Columbia River. This suggests that the river is a ground water divide or that the river is roughly coincident with a hydrogeologic barrier boundary. The statistical procedures used in this study constitute a quantitative means for differentiating ground waters according to hydrochemistry.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. The AMI workshop further outlined five 1997 funded AMI projects of potential interest to the mining industry. They were: ? All life on Earth relies on the ocean and yet the ocean is 95 percent unexplored, unknown and unseen by human eyes,? said Paula Keener, director of education programs for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?s (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research. ?To better understand, manage and protect the ocean and its resources, NOAA believes it is critical to use the best technology to explore, discover, inform, educate and motivate? (MTS, newsletter, January 2011). In the last few decades, our understanding of the global mineral resource base has been drastically changed by some surprising new developments. The potential for commercial minerals per unit area in the oceans and seabed appears to be similar to that of the terrestrial lands. Thus, almost three-fourths of the global mineral resources are in, or under, the sea and are virtually undeveloped. The area of the Pacific seabeds alone is greater than the total area of the global lands. Half of the global seabed minerals are now controlled by nation states within their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). The other half is controlled by the United Nations (UN) through the International Seabed Authority (ISA) within the ?areas beyond national jurisdiction? known as The Area. Thus, the Law of the Sea, ratified in 1994, has resulted in the largest transfer of control of natural resources in the history of mankind. This paper was prepared by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Committee on the Offshore Technology Conference for the SME Board of Directors and other interested parties. As the premier professional society for the mining and mineral community in the United States, with a history dating back to the 19th century, SME?s mission is to encourage and support young men and women engineers in the minerals industry, provide the services they need, improve the image of the industry, strengthen the networking among global industry professionals and engage in proactive collaboration among industry, government, academia and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The accomplishment of this mission can be strongly advanced by highlighting what is probably now the most significant development in the history of the modern minerals industry - the exploration of the marine environment and the understanding of the potential for the development of the minerals therein.

Acid rock drainage is the result of exposure of sulfidic materials, such as pyrites and sulfidic ores, to air and water. The oxidation of these sulfides is catalyzed by more than a million times by the bacteria Thiobacillus jerrooxidans and close families. Inhibition of these bacteria can mitigate 98% or more of the acid loading generated. This can be achieved by the use of certain surfactants that are selectively bactericidal to the lithotropic acidophilic bacteria. Bactericides are used in two ways. As periodic or continuous treatments for prevention of acidification of material actively handled and moved, and in controlled release form for reclamation where treatment sets up a change in site microbiology to replace Thiobacillus jerrooxidans with heterotrophic bacteria and creates a stable site without need for further treatments. Use of bactericides begins with laboratory testing of the site material to qualify the site for bactericide treatment and dosage determination. Site specific treatments are designed for active sites and reclamation. Once acid production is controlled, solubilization of metals is correspondingly reduced. Results and economics of use from active and reclamation sites are presented.

Different reefs being extracted from a mine will, in all likelihood, have significantly different semi-variogram models - and these will probably vary from geozone to geozone. As errors of estimation are dependent on the semi- variogram parameters, it follows, if a mine samples all reefs in all sections using the same sampling grid pattern, that estimation errors (or limits of confidence) will not be the same throughout the mine. This may be an undesirable situation! A geostatistical study of the relative merits of alternative sampling arrangements has been carried out by considering different reefs in different sections of a South African gold mine.

Sodium silicate(s), also known as “water glass”, are one of the oldest and most widely used industrial chemicals. Its first use in North American mining operations can be traced back to around 1925, which coincided with early use of xanthates in mineral flotation. Silicate functions as a sulphide and non-sulphide gangue mineral dispersant, depressant and modifying reagent in grinding and flotation operations. It is believed that soluble sodium silicate promotes selectivity of value added sulphides against gangue minerals, resulting in both grade and recovery improvement. This paper seeks to link improved grade/recovery to the interaction characteristics of minerals and the sodium silicate. A systematic study was performed with individual mineral species, an artificially designed model ore and the feed ore from a copper metallurgical operation. The function of sodium silicate was evaluated in the context of colloidal chemistry and linked to mineral surface chemistry. Measurement of pulp rheology and mineral zeta potential identified that sodium silicate works as a dispersant. The dispersion is accomplished by increasing a mineral’s net surface charge, resulting in a mineral variable change in viscosity. Bench scale laboratory flotation tests suggest that better dispersion leads to a diminished interaction of chalcopyrite with gangue. The improved Cu grade and recovery then are likely in response to an increased accessibility to collector along with a linked increase in particle bubble attachment resulting in better separation efficiency. ToF-SIMS surface chemical analysis of the flotation samples found a higher proportion of sodium silicate on minerals from the flotation tailings relative to the concentrates. Moreover, attachment of sodium silicate appears to be mineral specific; the data indicates that sodium silicate favours the surface of gangue phases over the value sulphides. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing involves enrichment of valuable minerals from an ore, where the separation process utilizes differences between the properties of the value-added and gangue minerals. The properties of minerals, for example composition, specific gravity, particle size, magnetic properties etc., in any flotation feed ore, can vary significantly between the various minerals present. In flotation seperation surface chemistry and wettability is a significant component promoting selective separation of the various mineral phases [1,2] Mineral surface wettability can be changed, advantageously or deleteriously, by many factors including: surface layer alteration through oxidation; galvanic interactions; attachment of secondary precipitates; the adsorption of various reagents [3] In the flotation context the wettability of a minerals surface can be manipulated by various reagents. Collector reagents may selectively attach to specific minerals in the mineral/water slurry enhancing their surface hydrophobicity, increasing bubble-attachment efficiency and improve flotation kinetics and mineral recovery [4]. In contrast, depressant reagents may selectively reduce a minerals surface hydrophobicity resulting in poor particle-bubble attachment and non flotation. In essence, a mineral flotation flow sheet is designed to induce/promote a hydrophobic surface to the value mineral and a hydrophilic surface to all others. Therefore, the versatility of the froth flotation process lies in the selection of different flotation reagents.

The concurrent observation of the phenomena of alkali-aggregate reaction and development of efficient dust collection systems on rotary kilns made mandatory the process modifications to produce low alkali cements. Such low alkali cements as were available prior to these recent changes were either the rare result of low alkali raw materials, the loss of alkalies with dust loss from the kiln stack, or in some instances by the use of CaC12 in the kiln feed to increase volitalization of the alkalies and their subsequent loss or discard with the normal dust emission from the kiln. The relative slowly soluble nature of natural occurring alkali minerals in cement raw materials as compared to the very soluble nature of the alkali salts as present in cement kiln reaction products, either in clinker or in dust emission led to the development of the water leaching system. Two distinctly different problems of leaching are created by the two major systems of portland cement production, the wet and dry processes. The wet process is characterized by moderate dust loads and concentration of soluble forms of alkali in the dust. Further the return of the leached dust slurry does not materially change the characteristics of kiln feed on reintroduction and subsequently does not materially influence kiln operation. The dry process differs in high levels of dust emission and the presence in the collected dust of large amounts of unreacted kiln feed with its sparingly soluble alkali minerals. In the dry process reintroduction of leached dust slurry changes the dry process to what may be classed as a damp process. This change results in some decrease in kiln capacity and creates conditions of operation which are uncommon to either the wet or dry process.

The Zijinshan gold-copper mine, in spite of the low-grade nature of the ore, has become one of the largest production-scale and most profitable non-ferrous metal mines in China. The successful application of hydrometallurgy as well as proper engineering design are the key factors for large-scale development of the Zijinshan gold-copper mine. In this contribution, the practical experience acquired in the development of the Zijinshan gold and copper mines is summarized. This covers most aspects of the production process including mining, beneficiation, ore stacking, heap (bio)leaching, carbon-in-leach, solvent extraction, electrowinning, wastewater and tailing treatments. The authors believe that this practical experience will not only help to promote the development of hydrometallurgy, but can also serve as a model for other gold and/or copper plants around the world.

Extensive exploration has resulted in delineation of a massive sulfide district on the north flank of the east-central Alaska range. The district covers approximately 400 square miles and contains numerous stratiform; transported and some replacement type sulfide deposits ranging in size from less than 1 million tons to 20 million tons. Five types of ores were sampled for the study. Mineralogical analysis revealed that the minerals are too fine grained for conventional grinding and beneficiation. Hydrometallurgical studies were con-ducted using ferric chloride as a lixiviant. Ore microscopic studies as well as electron microprobe analyses of minerals in the raw samples and leach residues explained the low recoveries for certain elements as well as sources of impurities that need to be eliminated from the process streams.
