PROJECT OVERVIEW As the sun-bronzed San Diego students strolled casually to class, mining crews from Atkinson Construction were working only 9 meters below the surface. The330 meter long, 11.3 meter diameter squat ellipse NATM tunnel is part of the9.3 kilometer Mission Valley East Extension Light Rail Transit (MVE-LRT) being constructed for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB). The SDSU segment of the MVE-LRT was awarded to the Clark Construction Group, the parent company of Atkinson Construction for $82.7 million. URS CORP was the prime designer and Hatch Mott MacDonald performed the NATM tunnel design. The construction managers were Washington Infrastructure Services with Underground Construction Managers, EPC Consultants, and ILF Consultants. A NATM tunnel design was chosen as the most cost-effective way to minimize disruption of the university activities. The tunnel passes close to several buildings and directly below access roads, tennis courts and a baseball field. The NATM method of conventional mining uses shotcrete for ground support often reinforced with steel orplastic fibers, welded wire mesh and lattice girders. The tunnel runs from a cut and cover box up a 4.2% grade in a 217 meter radius left-hand curve with several spirals and ends at the underground station 330 meters away. The depth of cover varies from 16 meters near the west portal to nine meters at the station. The design called for a two-pass system with a primary lining of 300 mm shotcrete with lattice girders at 1 m centers and two layers of welded wire mesh. The lattice girders are used primarily for profile control and are not considered a structural element. The top heading was designed to be excavated in one of three excavation sequences depending on ground conditions and depth of cover. Several factors need to come together in creating an integrate mining equipment dispatching system. At the hub of these factors ace the central dispatching formulas. This paper details the development of these central dispatching formulas and explores the combining of these formulas with other elements to create an integrated dispatching decision. WHY DISPATCHING? Truck dispatching implies and in reality should equate to mine equipment efficiency. Good truck dispatching will yield good mine equipment efficiency while poor truck dispatching will yield the alternative. Truck dispatching can either be automated through a computerized, process or it can be manual. Every mine with haul trucks has a truck dispatching system whether it is recognized or not. Even a system wherein the hauler operators determine where they are going for their next load is a truck dispatching system.

If the communication/tracking system of an underground mine is severely damaged in a large mine accident or explosion, a surface based seismic system could be the only available tool for locating any trapped miners. This paper documents a field test of a seismic system at a room-and-pillar coal mine in Eastern Kentucky. Testing was performed at 6 different depths (450, 575, 750, 1175, 1525 and 1700 ft) above the mine. For each location underground, the miners pounded a ?set? of 5 ?repetitions? on the roof with each repetition being about one second apart. Over the 3 day field test, 63 sets of underground miners? pounding were detected by the seismic system at depths up to 1175 ft and at horizontal offsets up to 890 ft. Also during the testing, the observed signal strength generated by pounding with a crib blocks was seen to average 180% stronger than the observed signal strength generated by pounding with a sledgehammer. Ultimately, this field test was very successful and definitively demonstrated the ability of the seismic system to detect potential trapped miners? pounding up to a depth of 1175 ft.

Separation of geochemical anomalies from background is an important and essential issue in the exploration of mineral deposits. Statistical methods are used to separation of anomaly from background. Fractal/multifractal and singularity methods are very suitable for the separation of weak anomalies. For interpolation, various methods could be used such as most distance-weighting methods, kriging, spline interpolation, interpolating polynomials, and finite difference methods. This paper addressed application of multifractal techniques together with finite difference procedure to detect the anomalous regions. Fractal models such as concentration–area, spectrum–area, and singularity index model were selected to identify Pb–Zn anomalies. In this research, 170 samples from 33 boreholes were taken in the Haft-Savaran area and analyzed for determination of Pb–Zn anomaly. Singularity method was a suitable method for separating Pb and Zn anomalies. Also, the results showed that the geochemical anomaly has occurred along NE–SW trend and is consistent with the sulfide mineralization process and the faults of the region.

The use of a static bath of a heavy liquid of intermediate density between two mineral phases has been employed for beneficiation for over one-hundred years (1-6). In the case of the heavy liquid separation of coal from its included mineral matter, laboratory (3) and commercial (2,4) techniques have employed a halohydrocarbon or mixtures thereof, or solutions of inorganic salts and water with a specific gravity in the range of 2.0 to 1.30. As a laboratory tool, the heavy liquid separation is generally regarded as a standard permitting the "ideal" separation of a product coal and reject mineral matter. Each of the products in this case is polyphase since the separation is only based on apparent specific gravity of the product or reject material. The "Otisca Process" is an anhydrous heavy liquid separation process which employs a parting liquid with certain physical and chemical characteristics which make it particularly advantageous for expanding the laboratory separation process into the realm of commercial coal cleaning. The two key characteristics of the parting liquid are: 1) the heavy liquid does not react significantly with the coal product or reject material, and 2) the liquid permits complete dispersion of the coal product particles throughout the separation bath. The first point, i.e., the lack of liquid coal reaction (7-11), may be cited as one of the major reasons for the failure of other attempts at commercialization of heavy liquid processes. For example, if reaction does occur between the heavy liquid and coal or mineral matter, complete heavy liquid recovery becomes a very expensive complex process. The costs of heavy liquids alone prohibit their loss in the process as will be demonstrated later.

"NIOSH recently completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth which evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a single-filter filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) comparing the effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) evaluating the use of three different pressure monitoring devices to determine the performance of the filtration and pressurization system over time. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range (0.3–10 µm), and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static conditions and after outlier removal, the single-filter filtration unit installed offered a protection factor between 8 and 216, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor greater than 4-times that of the ? > 99 filter when evaluated over 60 minutes. The booth pressure monitors provided data that proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. INTRODUCTION Designed and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from physical hazards, such as flying rock, debris, and noise, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity [1]. But while it may be easier to quantify whether the A/C unit is working (measuring the temperature) or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it can be somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards. For over 15 years, NIOSH has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside of enclosed cabs of mobile equipment [2-5]. This work has led to the identification and mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems [6]. The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms [1, 7]. Stationary enclosures are similar to enclosed cabs; however, the volume of the work area can be significantly larger. In addition, workers who perform their duties in stationary enclosures tend to stay within the room for a greater percentage of the day, as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who may enter and exit frequently. Structural integrity can be easier to maintain as well, as there is typically less vibration and stress placed on these compartments as compared to mobile equipment. In addition to offering protection from dust and flying debris, enclosures must ensure that workers have a healthy supply of fresh air to avoid elevated levels of CO2, which are known to cause headache and dizziness, impairing cognitive function. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) states that enclosures should have no more than 1,100 ppm of CO2 when outside levels are 400 ppm [8]. In addition, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ASABE) recommends a minimum airflow for enclosed cabs of at least 42.5 m3/hr (25.0 cfm) per person [9] to ensure an acceptable level of CO2."

This article discusses the effect of physical and chemical modifications of starches on the anionic and cationic flotation of silica from oxidized iron ores and magnetite-taconite concentrates, and the results of the interaction of starch, pH, and calcium ions on the flocculation, clarification, and filtration of iron ore slimes and magnetite-taconite tailings. Starches, particularly when anionically modified, were found to be effective depressants in anionic silica flotation. British gums and dextrins were beneficial for oxidized iron ores, but none of the starches or starch derivatives appeared to have any effect on magnetite-taconite concentrates. The flocculation and filtration of iron ore slimes were most strongly affected by the level of starch, to a lesser degree by the pH, and were virtually independent of the level of calcium chloride. The clarification of iron ore slimes was complexly dependent on these three factors. The flocculation of magnetite-taconite tailings depended mainly on the level of starch, whereas their clarification depended on the level of lime. As previously reported in the literature, selective flocculation and partial upgrading of a semi-taconite could be readily attained with starch and calcium chloride.

Domestic mining will not produce a significant portion of the manganese consumed in the United States unless new mining and processing techniques are implemented that will enable domestic lean ores to economically compete with rich foreign ores. One mining-processing technique that appears promising for certain deposits is in situ and/or heap leaching with aqueous SO2. Since leaching offers economic advantages of low capital costs, low operating costs, and short start-up times as well as environmental and safety improvements over conventional mining-processing, the Bureau of Mines studied the leachability of manganese deposits from several districts. Manganese oxides, hydroxides, and carbonates were leached to 80 to 90 pct recovery in 7 to 40 days of leaching with a solution containing 5 pct SO2 in column leaching tests. Preliminary cost analyses of surface mining-heap leaching, block caving-in situ leaching, and shrinkage stoping-in situ leaching indicate that the products of manganese leaching may be economically produced for the chemical and electrolytic manganese industries. The easiest marketable product to obtain would be a manganese sulfate commonly used as a fertilizer amendment. Manganese carbonates and hydroxides could also be precipitated from the pregnant leach solutions.

In the mining and quarry industries, rock fragments are often transported by conveyor belt. To estimate the qualities of the rock fragments (i.e., size distribution and shape), an operator must take samples from the conveyor and manually perform a sieve analysis, which is time-consuming and tedious. Alternatively, an image-analysis system can be used to monitor the fragment quality on a fast moving conveyor belt. However, images of fragments on a fast moving belt vary to such a degree that the quality of any two successive images are not the same, and some of the images are of such poor quality that they are unrecognizable by human eyes. If poor-quality images are directly analyzed by a segmentation algorithm, the analysis will not be satisfactory. To resolve this problem, it is necessary to use an image-classification pro-gram for the automatic selection of fragment images with good quality. Because of this need, an image-classification program was developed and tested both in the laboratory and in the field. Testing of the system on different types of fragments showed that the system works reasonably well.

Independent of the method chosen to forecast production, an accurate method to project metal extraction is needed in order to accommodate leach cycles that exceed leach data on hand and thus be able to accurately forecast production. Metal extraction data must be developed for each ore type identified in the deposit in order to apply the correct rate of leaching when a specific ore is being treated. Curve fitting is used to model the rate of disengagement of metal into the pregnant solution. This paper provides a description of a curve fitting algorithm developed by Mr. John T. Bartlett, inventor of the METSIM™ process simulation program. A methodology is provided by which the metallurgical data developed is evaluated to determine if accurate projections may be made from the data. A criteria has been developed to help determine when a column experiment may be terminated.

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

The ball mill circuit functional performance equation is presented. Applications in the industrial plant and in the research field are discussed.

In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

Using granular media for removal of soluble manganese from mine water and industry waste stream has the advantage of forming a compact surface layer of manganese oxide coating on the media. This process can avoid the step involving the separation of voluminous sludge of manganese hydroxide by the high-pH method for soluble manganese removal. The removal of soluble manganese is accomplished by adsorption and oxidation. The adsorption of Mn(II) on the manganese oxide-coated media was rapid through the specific adsorption and may be due to the ion exchange of hydroxyl ions on the manganese oxide by Mn(II). In the subsequent step, the adsorbed Mn(II) form the intermediate manganese complex on the manganese oxide product is oxidized with dissolved oxygen or other available oxidant source in the aqueous solution. This paper presents the efficiency of removal of soluble manganese from mine water by using a laboratory fluidized bed and the recovery of manganese oxide coating on the anthracite coal particles. In order to accelerate the formation of the manganese oxide layer on the surface of anthracite media, dilute potassium permanganate solution is used as an active oxidant. The effects of operation parameters on the manganese removal including pH, flow rate, concentration of feed and oxidant dosage are evaluated.

Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

The increase of the proportion of high Al2O3 content iron ore fine in iron and steel enterprises has brought about a series of problems such as the increase of the viscosity of blast furnace slag and the difficulty of the separation of slag and iron. In order to solve this problem, the effect of increasing MgO content on the technical and economic index, the cold strength, and metallurgical properties of high basicity and high-alumina sinter was studied through sinter pot test. Nova400NanoSEM field emission scanning electron microscope was used to analyze sinter microstructure. The experimental results show that when the MgO content fraction in the sinter with high basicity and high aluminum increases from 1.72 to 2.49%, the vertical sintering speed decreases by 4.38mm/min, the utilization coefficient decreases by 0.51t/(m2 h), and the low-temperature reduction degradation index increases by 6.7%. When MgO content in sinter is 2.11%, drum index and reducibility index are the highest, reaching 61.93% and 86.39% respectively. Mg2+ is mainly solid dissolved in the magnetite lattice and replaces Fe2+, up to 3.64%. The generated magnesie-containing magnetite inhibits the phase transition from Fe3O4 to Fe2O3 oxidation process in the sinter cooling process, which reduces the generation of secondary hematite and is conducive to improving the low-temperature reduction degradation performance of sinter.

Complete isolation of chromium (III) from the reference material (SARM 131), Upper Group 2 (UG2) chromite ore, and Merensky Reef mineral ore was achieved using ammonium phosphate salt as flux. Optimum pH (3.2–3.8) conditions and sample to flux ratios (1:25) were some of the factors that were critical for the complete isolation of chromium. Increasing the sample to flux ratio (1:50 excess) however resulted in the conversion of all the elements in the melt into a green solution (pH, 5.8–6.7). A different chromium compound was subsequently isolated from the green solution by allowing this solution to stand in an open vessel in a cupboard for a month during which time the pH decreased to pH 3.5–4.2. Quantitative analyses of chromium from the isolated precipitates of SARM 131, UG2 chromite ore, and Merensky Reef mineral ore indicated chromium contents of 41.87, 60.41, and 23.93% respectively which were very close to the chromium content in the original samples. Analysis of the chromium precipitates using IR indicated the presence of phosphates (1100–1200 cm−1 ) while SEM-EDX analysis showed the presence of microscopic crystalline particles with Cr, P, and O as the major elements. Further characterization of the chromium precipitates using XRD and Raman successfully identified the product as chromium (III) metaphosphate C-type (Cr(PO3)3, JCPDS no. 01-077-0672), in the isolated chromium precipitates.

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner's exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau's Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. The largest Spanish kaolin deposits formed on granites occur in Galicia (NW Spain) due to a widespread kaolinization of Variscan granitoids. This paper provides insight of the origin of this kaolinization process on the basis of a mineralogical and geochemical study carried out in two kaolin deposits, presently mined to be used in the paper industry. Mineral composition of the deeply kaolinized rocks is dominated by well-ordered kaolinite with minor quartz, K-feldspar, mica (illite/muscovite), locally gibbsite, and traces of resistant accessory phases (rutile, ilmenite, zircon and monazite). The content and structural order of the kaolinite decrease with depth. Kaolinite formed by extensive replacement of feldspars (plagioclase). Differential mobilization of major and trace elements during kaolinization has been inferred by using a mass-balance approach. Significant amounts of Na, Ca and minor Mn, Sr, P and U were removed from incipiently leachable minerals (plagioclase and apatite), and K, Rb, Cs and Ba were released from K-feldspar and mica. On the contrary, Ti, Zr, Th, Hf and the REE are retained in the resistant trace minerals that are concentrated in the fine fractions of the kaolins.
