Overexcavation and ground loss events during pressurized-face TBMadvance in soft ground can result in unplanned deformations above the tunnel and damage to existing infrastructure. Successfully managing the risk of this occurring is crucial for any project in an urban area to proceed. Common risk management approaches include a combination of establishing suitable ranges of TBM operational parameters and using geotechnical instrumentation for deformation monitoring. Another risk management tool is material flow reconciliation, which varies depending on the specified mining method and the equipment choices by the contractor. This paper compares recent and ongoing projects in the Pacific Northwest regarding overexcavation risk management.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and AMAX Coal Company have studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipe-line of 15 to 5l-cm diameter, monitoring vibration, strain, and pressure. Unlike tests simulating construction blasting, these were up to 1000 kg per delay in 3l-cm blastholes. Worst case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/s blasting vibrations produced strains about 1/4 that of pressurization and 10-18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m which produced vibrations over 60 cm/s.

An atmospheric ammoniacal thiosulphate leach system was developed to recover gold and silver from residues of the ammoniacal oxidation leaching of sulphidic copper concentrates. Extractions of 88 - 95% Au and 83 - 98% Ag were attained within 2 to 4 hours at 40 - 60°C in thiosulphate leaching of the oxidation leach residues of Manitoba chalcopyrite concentrates analyzing 24.6% Cu, 0.18 oz/ton Au and 4.26 oz/ton Ag and a complex British Columbia chalcopyrite/tetrahedrite concentrate analyzing 18.5% Cu, 0.27 oz/ton Au and 276 oz/ton Ag. Parameters affecting the Au and Ag solubilization included thiosulphate, ammonia, and cupric ion concentrations, temperature, retention time and the degree of Cu extraction and sulphide oxidation in the primary oxidation leach. The precious metals were recovered from the thiosulphate liquors by zinc dust cementation.

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s two-mile-long particle accelerator generates the world’s brightest X-rays from its Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) freeelectron laser. This facility has driven groundbreaking discoveries in medicine and industry. The LCLS-II-HE project will provide a significant increase in laser energy, allowing cutting-edge research in fields including biology and environmental science. A key project component is the Low Emittance Injector Tunnel (LEIT), a 240-foot-long tunnel to be built alongside the existing accelerator and connected to it via a 30-footlong Transfer Tunnel. This paper discusses site and scientific constraints that led to the selection of the LEIT configuration: tunnels to be constructed using the sequential excavation method in mixed-face conditions comprising native rock and placed backfill, and critical design considerations including protection of overlying and adjacent historic structures and structural accommodation of near-fault seismic loading.

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

Solution mining followed by solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) is one possible way to economically extract copper from ore bodies which cannot otherwise be profitably exploited. Published costs for the unit processes of SX and EW are out of date especially in view of the newer reagents now available and the newer circuit configurations, This paper updates the costs for SX-EW in 1985 dollars and also discusses some of the trade-offs which must be made when designing an SX-W plant.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. The ability to accurately model the movement of grade boundaries during a typical bench blast would be of significant benefit to mine operators. The movement of grade boundaries during the blasting process may have significant impact on grade recovery if not accounted for. The paper describes the preliminary stages of a research project which combines numerical blast models and conventional mine planning software to allow practical use of the results of a numerical blast simulation. A two dimensional bench blast is simulated using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). The results of the simulation are used to provide input to the Surpac mine planning package which can be used to generate grade control plans.

I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger

Pre-combustion coal cleaning and post-combustion flue gas desulfurization (FGD) using lime or limestone are the primary methods employed to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission from coal combustion. These processes generate voluminous pyrite and gypsum solid wastes that are usually landfilled, occupying thousands of acres of land and creating serious land and water pollution problems due to the release of acids and toxic substances. An integrated process has been developed for the combined utilization of gypsum and pyrite wastes by converting them into useful products including lime, sulfur, and direct reduced iron (DRI). The process includes four major steps. The first step is to concentrate pyrite from coal preparation tailings using flotation or gravity separation. The second is the thermal decomposition of pyrite into pyrrhotite and sulfur. This is followed by the reduction of pyrrhotite with carbon in the presence of lime to produce iron and calcium sulfide. The fourth step involves the reaction of calcium sulfide with gypsum to produce lime. The chemical reactions involved in the process were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)techniques. Process variables studied included reaction temperature, time, reactant composition, and purity of reactants.

Introduction The issue of coal mining safety plays an important role in the United States' growing dependence on coal to supply its future needs. This article will address the federal government's role, principally the US Bureau of Mines, in meeting this challenging growth and demand while reducing the social and economic costs attributed to injuries and fatalities in underground mining. Some interesting facts and projections with respect to the nation's energy picture will be discussed. This includes the distribution of its reserves and the projected role of coal in the energy and economics of the nation's future. Underground mining will continue to be an important means of providing this coal. The author will discuss how the Bureau of Mines' research program addresses the problems of health and safety that grow out of the demand for more coal. Future projections First, a synopsis of salient facts and projections concerning the US's situation with respect to energy and the economy. Figure 1 depicts the relative quantities of recoverable energy reserves in the United States by their type. Most people are aware of the nation's use of oil. We hear a lot about natural gas. And we are aware of the controversy over the use of nuclear energy. But, while looking at Fig. 1, the question becomes, "Where will our fuel to meet the demand for energy in the future most certainly have to come from?" With 82% of the nation's recoverable fuel reserves being coal, the answer is irrefutable. Coal will be that source. Figure 2 is the present market for coal. It shows that 77% of the coal mined goes to supply electric utilities. Therefore, the coal industry as a whole is most sensitive to the trends and demands for electricity. It is less affected by what happens in other markets, such as export and direct industrial use. In fact, the coal industry is three times more sensitive to the electric utility market than to all other markets combined. Therefore, the trend in the demand for electricity must be examined. Electricity demand is expected to increase steadily over the next 15 years. It is projected to grow from its present 2.3 trillion kWh per year to 3.5 trillion kWh per year by the year 2000. The fuel to supply this increase in demand must come from somewhere. The question is "How much of this extra fuel will be coal?" Although the demand for electricity is predicted to increase, the demand for coal does not necessarily follow. Coal must maintain its fraction of the energy sources used for electricity generation if its demand is to increase at the same or greater rate as electricity. Except for a near-term dip in demand due to a slight increase in nuclear capacity, the domestic electric generation accruing to coal will go from 56% in 1985 to more than 60% in 2005. Thus, the predicted trend is for coal to become a larger part of the fuel mix for electric power generation. Similarly, looking at the most recent forecast for total coal consumption trends, it can be seen that for electric power generation alone, the coal industry must be able to supply an additional 316 Mt/a (348.5 million stpy) by the year 2000 (Fig. 3). It must be stressed here, though, that without significant improvements in mining safety, it can also be easily predicted that injuries and fatalities will increase in proportion to the increase in coal production. Will society consider that acceptable? This author does not believe so. Figure 4 examines the effect of coal prices on the price of electricity. The projections show that the already high proportion of fuel cost will become a greater fraction of the consumer price for electricity. Specifically in 1985, 36% of the price of electricity was the cost of the fuel. In 1995, 46% of the price of electricity will be the fuel cost. That implies that the price of coal will have an increasing influence on the consumer price for electricity. Thus, as coal is used more to generate electricity and as fuel becomes a greater

The results of unpublished investigations into surface subsidence from coal mining in the Northern Appalachian Coalfield are summarized. These investigations were carried out by various coal companies and the State of Pennsylvania in the sixties and seventies. Subsidence data were collected and analyzed from 10 room-and-pillar panels in 5 mines in the Pittsburgh coal seam. Results show that angle of draw ranges from 26° to 33° and subsidence factor from 0.42 to 0.72; surface heating generally occurs beyond the edges of the panel, the amount and extent of which vary; waviness occurs in the subsidence profile if a substantial number of pillar stumps are left in irregular patterns; interpanel effect is significant; time-dependent subsidence exists, but varies for different panels; and surface slope does not seem to affect the amount of subsidence.

The Wild Dog vein gold deposit in East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, forms part of a recently discovered 26 km zone of auriferous quartz vein mineralisation. The deposit, which was discovered in July 1983, has no silt anomaly, and a panned concentrate anomaly and float train restricted to within 500 m and 800 m respectively, of the discovery outcrop. Discovery of the Wild Dog deposit was a result of the methodical followup of regional panning which, as followup progressed, was replaced in importance by float sampling. Of the sampling methods used during the exploration leading to discovery, panning and float followup provided immediate indications of the presence of mineralisation. This high degree of spontaneity of followup is not provided by geochemical techniques, and has obvious advantages in high cost exploration for precious metal deposits in remote locations.

A reliable estimate of radon emissions to the environment from underground uranium mines was obtained through measurements of radon in ventilation air at 24 mines and from estimates of radon release from other mine sources. The total production of U308 from the mines sampled represents about 63% of the total U.S. production from underground mines (1978 statistics). Wide variation in the radon emission rate per unit of production was found from mine to mine. Using the total radon emitted and U308 produced by all mines sampled, an average of 26.7 Ci of radon was emitted per ton of U309 produced. The investigation includes a brief study of the sources of variation of the emission rates. A statistically significant relationship was found between the measured radon release rate and the cumulative ore production at several mines.

Recently a detailed study ?Minerals Planning Policies and Supply Practices in Europe? has been completed. The study, conducted on behalf of DG Enterprise, demonstrated that there are very few written down national minerals policies within European Union. Mineral policy elements are dispersed in many different documents and acts. The paper discusses the essential elements of minerals policies; particularly importance is placed in issues related to planning (land use planning, mineral development, etc.). A number of examples of successful and less successful mineral planning policy approaches are presented in other to support the idea of importance of comprehensive mineral policy. The main sources of information were the country reports of 26 European countries that are appendix of the study. We conclude that comprehensive written mineral policy that incorporates essential elements is crucial in order to achieve secure minerals supply.

Management should be made to understand where the risks are in heap leaching, and management should be alerted to the variability of costs in heap leaching, many of which are based upon company philosophy. These concepts are complex, but easily illustrated with guided tours of existing heap leach facilities.

The problem of recovering gold from a cyanide solution has been plaguing metallurgists since the cyanidation process was discovered in Glasgow, Scotland.1 The "perfect" method has never been found and this paper will not purport to fill that gap. But we, at Gold Fields, feel that we have developed a workable, cheap and efficient method of producing a refinery - ready product that has several distinct advantages over conventional electroplating techniques. The Gold Fields replating system is presently being used at their Ortiz and Mesquite operations. In short, the system electroplates the gold out on stainless steel wool, instead of mild steel wool as is usually done, then replates the gold by reversing the current onto stainless steel plates. By doing this the steel wool can be reused many times, the gold can be scraped off the plates cleanly and quickly, the operating costs are reduced and the slag production is greatly reduced.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. The Rio Blanco Oil Shale Company completed a modified in situ oil shale retorting demonstration at its Tract C-a Lease in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwestern Colorado during the spring of 1982. This demonstration was the first MIS project with shafts rather than adits for access to the mining operation, and it involved several potential hazards which required that particular attention be paid to mine ventilation. Methane was first encountered during shaft sinking and ultimately resulted in the mine being classified gassy by MSHA. Secondly, we encountered hydrogen sulfide in association with the ground water, and this proved to be a more persistent problem than did the methane. Thirdly, in order to burn the underground retorts, it was necessary to provide for potential leakage of retort gases and to obtain a modification to the MSHA standard which forbids fires under- ground. This modification had a significant effect on the ultimate ventilation procedures at Tract C-a. An extensive under- ground air monitoring program was included in the ventilation system.
