A sociotechnical system (STS) creates a framework that allows an examination of how social and technical factors affect organizational outcomes within a specific environmental context. STS has been rigorously studied with a primary research focus addressing worker-technology interactions. Although these interactions are important, the social processes and interactions that occur whenever any technical or environmental change is introduced into the system have been undervalued. If social processes are better understood, mining organizations could efficiently prepare and stabilize for such changes. With this goal in mind, we sought to extend STS theory through applying principles of meta-design to analyze the results of two case study interventions. Specifically, we studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the Continuous Personal Dust Monitor) on factors within an STS including employees’ knowledge of, communication about, and use of technology to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results are presented in a way that first, addresses the overarching principles of meta-design STS including organizational participation, flexibility, and communication and second, examines how technology implementation processes differ when the organization is complying with a formal, higher-level requirement. Results show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce unpredictability on the technical side and may improve communication within the system to help reduce adoption time, especially if and when accompanying a new, formal work process.

Sunshine Mining Co.'s Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the US. Maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and un-certain silver markets, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a two-year, $400,000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants. This saved the company about $650,000 per year.

Information gathered while studying geological parameters that govern fine gold deposition in the a1luvial environment can be applied to the technological development and selection of fine gold recovery systems. It is recognized that substantial gold losses occur in the minus 1.5 mn (minus 12 mesh) fraction using conventional sluicing systems. Within the past two decades much attention has been given the design and efficiency of these thick bed concentrators. Studies and comparisons drew information from several foreign and domestic placer operations. These studies concentrated on: 1) the physical and chemical properties of alluvial gold 2) the parameters that control fine gold deposition 3) the geometrical form, components and general working structure of conventional sluicing systems 4) the physical properties which contribute to the overall efficiency of a sluice system 5) the comparison of three major styles of conventional sluicing systems. A dramatic improvement regarding fine gold recovery and water quality was observed when using modern multiple-channel sluicing systems in place of conventional single-channel sluicing systems.

The Belle Eldridge Mine is an inactive lead-zinc mine in Spruce Gulch south of Deadwood, South Dakota. Acidic mine drainage (AMD) produced at the site drains into Spruce Creek, a tributary of Whitewood Creek. The site is on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Extensive fieldwork was done at the Belle Eldridge Mine through the cooperation of the BLM and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The site was extensively mapped to identify physical and environmental hazards such as tailings, waste rock, collapsed buildings, adits and workings. An exhaustive search of the historical records of the Belle Eldridge Mine was conducted. Maps of the under-ground workings of the Belle Eldridge dating from the 1930’s and 1940’s were found. The maps were used to correlate currently collapsed features to old adits and tunnels. Using hand corers and a portable drill rig, waste rock, tailings and soil core samples were collected and depth to bedrock was determined and the total volume of waste and tailings pile were determined. Related work examined the hydrology of the site. The site is very complex hydrogeologically. Numerous underground and surface workings and tunnels add to the complexity. Several seeps are located at the site, one of which is producing AMD. Recharge to the site was studied, and a 100-year flood plain map was produced.

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

Durability risks for underground facilities can be underestimated during design phase as compared to well-known geological risks. However, unclear durability requirements can result in construction schedule delay and change orders. Unlike bridges or buildings, a unified underground durability code or standard does not exist. This paper will provide a durability approach for underground facilities, including degradation modes, mitigations, and compliance measures during construction. In addition, this paper will address how to clearly specify durability requirements in a contract document to reduce disputes during construction and discuss key durability tests that are time consuming and will impact construction schedule if not timely planned.

Introduction Fluorspar demand or consumption has been taken for granted in recent years, except for those that produce, market, or consume the commodity. Thinking used to be that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources. It created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The US and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. Goals for the government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. US production and distribution Fluorspar Fluorspar shipments from US mines reached an all-time high near the end of World War II in 1944 at 375 kt (413,800 st). Eighty-two mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) each, and 10 mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st.) each. Illinois supplied 43% of total shipments. Consumption in 1944 was 372 kt (410,200 st), of which 56% was used by steel producers and 32% by HF producers. This was the last year that US production exceeded US consumption. The post-World War II record for fluorspar shipments occurred in 1951 at 315 kt (347,000 st) 58 mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) and eight mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st).

The Quick-Erect Stopping System (QESS) offers a new way of reducing the radon exposures of miners in Germany, especially during remediation work in old mines. The QESS is a light-weight, modular, and reusable construction kit of interlocking telescopic aluminum tubes, radon-proof foil, and expanding foam. It is designed to seal off radon-rich parts of galleries within only a few minutes. Originally, the QESS was developed to protect miners against radon exposures. Then, the QESS found the attention of several mine rescue teams at a German mining conference. The Student Mine Rescue of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Wismut Mine Rescue carried out firstmine rescue drills in Freiberg and Schlema. Additionally, a mine rescue drill was carried out by the Front Range Mine Rescue in the Edgar Experimental Mine of the Colorado School of Mines. These drills helped to improve the systemand highlighted its potential for mine rescue operations. Now, the QESS is wellsuited for small-scale mining. The QESS can be used to seal off galleries in only a few minutes to both protect miners fromradon exposures and to support mine rescue operations. Moreover, the QESS was also successfully used in ventilation experiments.

Energy dissipation and fragmentation of rock is of interest for mine-to-mill operations in order to understand breakage and to minimize energy consumption during blasting at the mine site, and comminution at the processing plant. In this regard, high velocity impact breakage of long granite cores, called bars, has been studied with instrumented strain gages to follow the energy dissipation gradient along the bar length resulting from the strain waves generated by impact. As a result of high velocity impact, three zones have been identified (fragmentation, fracture, and elastic) and these three zones have been characterized in 3D using X-ray tomography. The fragmentation zones of the granite bars were studied in detail to describe the particle size distribution and the particle shape characteristics. Finally, the experimental energy dissipation for the fragmentation zone was found to be in close agreement with the expected energy calculated from the Bond work equation, if the anisotropic granite particles are defined by length rather than by sieve size.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live. Economic and at the same time environmentally acceptable mining of small vertical ore bodies and veins to great depths has always been a challenge for miners. The Bauer cutter system, widely used in civil engineering, has been further developed for applications in exploration and mining, to a sustainable system for selective mining with a focus on small vertical ore bodies and veins, as well as residual ore in open pit operations. Current situation of conventional mining of small ore bodies and vertical veins Small ore bodies and vertical or near-vertical ore veins often pose a challenge to the mining industry. The relatively small size of the ore deposit over great depths or lengths, with only limited exposure to the surface makes economical mining difficult. Open pit mining of such ore bodies must either be terminated early because of the high stripping ratio and the enormous environmental impact or is unprofitable from the very beginning. The required massive stripping of waste rock leads to high material hauling times and costs, intensive roadway and bench construction and maintenance, possible safety hazards due to heavy vehicle movement, pit wall stability risks, intensive surface water management and massive waste dump requirements. In addition, it can be assumed that increasingly extensive rehabilitation measures will be required in the future after mine closure. Particularly in vertically oriented magmatic and hydrothermal deposits the technical, economic and environmental limits for further pushbacks, to extend the open pit depth, can lead to an early end of mine life even if a significant quantity of residual ore is left behind. Going underground is only a viable option in a limited number of mines with very high ore values and volumes. The high development cost of an underground mine, as well as the higher underground mining costs, often prevent further mining to greater depths.

Soda Springs background The Soda Springs phosphate mine and plant is a joint venture between Monsanto and its operating partner, Solutia Inc. The operation is based in southeastern Idaho in the Western Phosphate Field. The plant is located about 275 km (170 miles) northeast of Salt Lake City, UT and about 4 km (2.5 miles) north of the town of Soda Springs.

Conveyors are the lifeline of mining and processing operations. They continuously supply materials to and carry finished products and waste away from operations. When conveyors are running at less than maximum efficiency, the operation's productivity is in trouble. Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the buildup of materials on idlers and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and conveyor transfer points. This causes accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components and increase both clean-up labor and maintenance expenses. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and endangering personnel and conveyor components. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply the operation's hidden costs. These added expenses occur in lost production, increased downtime for service and maintenance and replacement costs for prematurely worn equip¬ment. In addition, the attitude that inefficiency is "good enough" is recognized elsewhere in the organization. As a result, other departments relax or operate at less than peak performance. Quality goes down along with employee morale. Costs of inefficient conveyors A key to efficiency is handling a product as few times as is necessary. That means conveyors should be loaded, track true to the unloading point and then be unloaded, all without material escape or waste motion. An inefficient conveyor is often signaled by accumulations of DURT - material that has escaped from the system and is now at large in the plant. This DURT adds costs to an operation that are uncounted and, perhaps, uncountable.

L. Alan Weakly, member SME, is a senior staff engineer, Exxon Co. Weakly chaired a Mining Engineering committee formed to solicit materials for six planned "personal skills" articles, to be used in ME this year. What follows are Weakly's introductory comments to the series. Upon graduation from college several years ago, I thought that I was sufficiently prepared to embark in my chosen profession. A short time later I realized that several years of on-the-job training was going to be required before I could use my technical training effectively. It never occurred to me that, professionally, I was seriously lacking in any other skills. My spelling could use a little upgrading, but this was not a serious deficiency. I have been very fortunate to have had two employers that recognized that their engineering professionals did lack other skills and made every effort to give them training to correct these deficiencies. The skills I am referring to are those in administration and interpersonal relationships. Most mining engineers and geologists receive very little, if any, college training in these areas. In addition, many companies do not provide this training and many mining engineers and geologists are unaware of their deficiencies. It is for this reason the subject of personal skills development is being introduced in Mining Engineering. The mining engineer or geologist can pursue one of two basic career directions, managerial or technical. In today's technically sophisticated society and highly competitive business climate, both orientations require administrative and interpersonal skills. Most of us are technically qualified and we continue to upgrade our technical skills. But many studies indicate that we, as a group, are significantly weaker in administrative and interpersonal skills than other professional groups. In addition, these studies indicate that engineers, in general, take longer to reach managerial levels and fewer do so. This series in Mining Engineering, then, should help readers strengthen and broaden their professional capabilities. In all industries, including mining and petroleum, economic analysis of potential investment projects is done to select the projects that will give maximum future value from the investment of available capital. Rather than looking directly at the future values to be generated by investing capital in alternate ways for economic decisions, evaluators usually use either rate of return, present value, annual value, a profit to investment ratio, or various break even analysis results to reach economic analysis decisions in evaluating alternative investments. Alternative economic evaluation techniques are used in industry to properly analyze the economic potential of various investment projects. "Discounted Cash Flow" analysis is the phrase commonly used to describe these techniques. Whether you want to analyze projects in mineral, petroleum, real estate, refining, pipe-line transportation, or any other industry, proper application of discounted cash flow analysis techniques enables you to fairly compare the economic potential of alternative projects as well or better than you can using any other project evaluation approaches. It should be pointed out that investment analysis generally involves more than economic analysis. Financial and intangible considerations sometimes are as important or more important to investment decision-making than economic considerations. Economic analysis refers to evaluation of the profit generating potential of projects, that is selecting which alternative projects will generate maximum future value possible from available investment capital. Financial analysis, on the other hand, relates to analysis of where money is going to come from to finance various projects. Regardless of the economic potential of a project, if financial analysis indicates that we cannot finance the project, it likely will be shelved for financial reasons even though it may be economically satisfactory. Many evaluators use the terms "economic analysis" and "financial analysis" interchangeably, but this author considers that to be undesirable. Published information discussing uranium mine radon daughter controls and related costs was examined and used to develop an estimated (projected) cost per ton for any level of control. Results show a clear power function increase of cost for conventional dilution ventilation as the annual exposure limit is lowered. Projections can be made using any assumed changes in consumer price index (CPI) and radon daughter working level months exposure limit. Bounds on the estimated costs are provided, and applicability of the final equation is discussed.

A gas–solid fluidized bed using magnetite particles is an effective methodology for coal beneficiation in the field of dry coal cleaning. Broadening the size range of magnetite used in the bed decreases medium preparation cost. In this study, a tapered fluidized bed was used to investigate a magnetite particle size range of −0.5 + 0.074 mm. The results showed that a tapered fluidized bed effectively strengthens mixing of magnetite with a wide size range (−0.5 + 0.074 mm). The results of beneficiation experiments indicated that with increasing tapered angle, separation efficiency increased and then decreased. The highest separation efficiency was obtained at a tapered angle of 10°. The optimal results showed that the ash content of the concentrate decreased from 31.82% to 12.33% with a probable error of 0.11, which indicated that a tapered fluidized bed was efficient to improve fine coal beneficiation performance.

This paper concerns the optimum arrangement of the buoyancy module, which is used for stable dynamic motion and structure stability of the marine flexible riser. The main method of this study is simulation-based design using Genetic Algorithm (G.A) for optimum design and Multi-body dynamic for simulation. The marine riser connects the vessel and the seabed-tracked vehicle. The motion of the riser affects the motion of the vessel and the vehicle. In this study, a marine riser of the deep-seabed integrated mining system (Figure 1) is used. This riser has a strong effect on efficient transfer of minerals. So, the buoyancy module must be equipped to supplement problems of the structure stability and the dynamic motion. Positions and quantities of the equipping buoyancy modules are determined by the at sea experiment (Figure 2). But this method is not easy because the actual sea experiment is expensive, time-consuming and dangerous (Figure 3). Thus, the position and quantity must be determined by simulation-based design. The dynamic analysis models of the riser and the buoyancy module were built in the commercial software DAFUL. In the marine environment, factors affecting behavior are current, drag force, etc.

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.
