Recurring movements remotely connected with the Murray fracture zone and the San Andreas fault complex, together with the slow northwestward drift affecting the Baja California peninsula, could progressively have accentuated the tensional situation already connected with the anticlinorium in southern Arizona. From the fragmentary data gathered on the Texas lineament, it appears that a very mild curvature, concave to the northeast, may be present along this belt throughout Arizona. Those localities where the successive changes in direc¬tion of the strands of the lineament belt seem to occur do generally coincide with intersections of both north-northwestern and northeastern breaks. It is along the outward, southern fringe of the belt (at such structural centers like Bisbee, Baboquivari, Ajo) that the greatest impact of regional movements could be expected to have occurred through tangential-torsional stresses. Although it si accepted that the north-northwestern and more particu¬larly the northeastern fractures in Southeast Arizona are propitious to or partially responsible for mineralization, it seems undeniable that the Texas lineament belt must have greatly increased the potentialities for ore throughout the Arizona copper province. While intrusive bodies occur near major intersections, with the Texas lineament belt as a common denominator, it seems, the ore deposits are to be found close to one of the intrusive stocks, varying in distance from contiguity (Bisbee) to one or two miles away (Silver Bell orebodies).

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

In the mineral industry, the objective of a mining venture is to extract, process, and market a mineral commodity in such a manner that the profit of the venture is maximized. In a mining venture, a company normally has control over mine production scheduling, the selection and location of processing facilities (mineral beneficiation plants, smelting plants, refineries, or blending facilities), processed ore blending, and the selection of markets. The flexibility of the above factors provides many alternatives to satisfy the needs of each market with regard to quantity and quality of ore. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical model for determining the alternative that yields the maximum profit. Production planning is generally concerned with the best utilization of fixed resources, more specifically, with the determination of production and inventory levels to meet fluctuating demand requirements. A mine can be any source of ore such as an entire mine, a production unit within a mine, or an independent supplier. The objective of production scheduling is to determine the times at which each mine will be used and to allocate a required level of production. Production planning and scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of new and existing mines and processing facilities. Although the location of the mines is usually fixed, there can be considerable flexibility in locating new processing facilities, in the selection of the processing plant, and in blending the ore before and after processing.

The high-grade Th-U-Y zone is one of the numerous mineralized zones found in the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites in southwestern Egypt. It is characterized by the thorium minerals thorite and thorogummite, which are closely associated with xenotime-(Y). This zone of mineralization is localized in the eastern part of the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites. This zone does not relate to the first phase of syenites that appeared on the surface but is linked to the other, hidden phase of the syenitic body. Additionally, the fluids responsible for the mineralization of this zone belong to the late-stage hydrothermal event as well as the fault action due to the fact that it had continued reactivations for a long period of time. The studied mineralized zone also contains ceriopyrochlore-(Ce),(Ce,Ca,)2 (Nb,Ta)2O6 (OH), fluorite (CaF2) and barite (BaSO4), which are found in considerable amounts, whereas apatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) and chromite (FeCr2O4) are rarely found together with Fe-oxi-hydroxides (hematite and goethite) with a minor amount of jarosite (KFe33+(OH)6(SO4)2). Finally, the main constituent mineral in the zone is the pseudomorph perthite in addition to quartz, which is found as deformed crystals. A technological sample was collected from this zone and was found to assay 4.62 weight percent thorium (Th), 0.37 weight percent uranium (U) and 3.12 weight percent rare earth elements (REEs). From the chemical and mineralogical composition of the studied technological sample, the leachabilities of Th, U and REEs were investigated using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) agitation leaching and pug leaching methods. The latter was found to be preferred under the conditions of 0.54 ton H2SO4 per ton of altered syenite at 110 °C for two hours.

Most management decisions at all levels of the organization are as directly or indirectly depends on the circumstance of future. With regard to predict the future events in the process of decision-making plays a main role, therefore, forecasting is very important for every organizations and institutions. There is a variety of methods to predict time series. In general, these techniques can be divided as following: statistical, artificial intelligence and analytical techniques. Two of the most common methods for time series prediction is autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and artificial neural network (ANN) methods, these methods are the subset of statistical and artificial intelligence techniques respectively. In this paper, a hybrid model of ARIMA and ANN models are employed to predict the number of fatal injuries in the USA underground coal mines. This research showed the result of hybrid model is better than split model.

Acid-activated montmorillonite is used worldwide as a catalyst and as a sorbent for the enhancement and purification of petroleum products as well as vegetable and animal-based fats. The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. This paper will describe the use of acid-activated montmorillonite in traditional sorbent applications, as a solid acid catalyst, and other new uses.

Over the past several years, the combination of higher energy and steel costs and the recent commercial deployment of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology in hard rock mining have led many multinational mining companies to evaluate the suitability of HPGR technology for their particular comminution circuits. HPGR technology is perceived to require a higher capital investment while delivering lower long-term operating costs. This paper undertakes a critical evaluation of this perception. By evaluating the capital and life-of-mine operating costs of competing circuit designs for soft, medium and hard ores, the HPGR break-even point can be identified, at which the incremental capital cost of an HPGR circuit is equivalent to the net present value of the projected operating cost reductions. For ores with hardness parameters above the break-even point, HPGR circuits could offer economic benefits, while for softer ores, SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crushing (SABC) circuits are likely to be more economical and energy efficient. This evaluation considers both an SABC reference circuit and a traditional stage crushing configuration. Other influential factors are also discussed.

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. The implementation of NAFTA in January of 1994 was expected to have small but beneficial effects for the Mexican economy, mostly through increased investment flows. Mexico's mining industry was especially likely to benefit, as mineral investment funds would be diverted to the now safer Mexico and away from similarly endowed but more risky Latin American mineral economies. The results of the past two years have shown that it is governments and macroeconomic factors that influence investment flows, rather than the fine-tuning of trade flows through so called "free-trade" agreements.

This paper, in its first part, compares the profile and economic weight in the extraction of industrial minerals and aggregates to the so called conventional mining activities (metals, coal, gas and oil extraction) in Brazil. In its second part, a descriptive analysis of the present situation of the education in Brazil is made, emphasizing the graduation and post-graduation formation especially in engineering. The curricular structure of the schools that prepare the mining workforce is discussed and the presence of specific subjects in industrial minerals is evaluated. Finally, considerations are made on the actions being taken in the main universities and companies, aiming to improve the formation of the specialized workforce. The Brazilian mining production, comparing 2010 to 2011 showed an expansion of more than 3% (IBGE, 2012). Not bad, but nothing to do with the 13% growth between 2010 and 2009 (influenced by a recovery effect from the 2008 commodities? nightmare). The commodities that had a rising behavior were titanium, gypsum, nickel, graphite, bauxite, phosphate, chrome and chrysotile. All of them were eclipsed by the impressive growth of iron ore production. Some decreases could be noticed, eg. in zinc, kaolin, magnesite and salt production (DNPM, 2012). In fact, the mining activities followed the positive growth of the country these last 5 years. The commercial balance (exports against imports) was not spectacular (positive in US$ 30 billion in 2010). It is important to notice that the mineral commodities balance was US$ 35 billion, representing 27.4% of the total exports and 15.6% of the total imports of Brazil (DNPM, 2012). In this positive environment, the workforce in Brazil showed progress in number of formal jobs and average revenues.

The ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system consists of nine shafts (three intakes and six exhausts). Three surface based axial fans ventilate the mine configured in a blowing arrangement. Following the ventilation survey airflow quantity, frictional pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics have been quantified. An accurate resistance survey has been conducted to calculate the pressure drop with regard to moving cages and skips in the shafts. This paper discusses the benefits of utilizing high accuracy digital pressure transducers and psychrometers in a ?leapfrogging? survey to gather data needed to build the computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFD are currently idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model has been used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease the overall operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study has been conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next fifteen years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

The amount of copper flash smelting slag has increased during the recent years along with an increasing slag-to-metal ratio. During slag tapping, some copper sulfide is mechanically entrained. As a result, it is necessary to recover copper matte from the slag by suitable methods. At present, the most common way is slow, controlled cooling in a transfer ladle. However, research on the detailed effects of slow cooling and the function of slag modification is rare. This paper described experiments that were performed at different cooling rates (0.5, 1.5, 3, and 7 °C/min), with and without additive. A detailed characterization of the copper-rich phase and its particle size was subsequentlymade using SEM-EDSmicrographs and image analysis software.With a decrease in cooling rate, the particle size of the copper-rich matte phase became larger. The addition of gypsum and carbon as a slag modifier affected the size of the copper-rich phase slightly, and its chemical composition was modified compared with the experiments without additive.

The long hole open stoping (LHOS) method is widely used in underground mining. While methods to predict stable stope geometries are well established, the ability to maintain a stable back often assumes effective ground support across the full stope span. The efficacy of the support strategy is dependent on rock jointing, quality, density, top cut width and height, and the type, amount, and orientations of bolts installed. However, it is becoming increasingly common for operators to assume narrow top cuts in service of wider stope spans with minimal bolting coverage. Failure to account for the required top cut drift size and support requirements can ultimately lead to raveling type instabilities along stope shoulders that result in back collapse. A new method has been developed to evaluate the minimum top cut dimension necessary to accommodate wider stope spans with various rock bolting configurations. Due to the economic impacts of top cut development and support, this is a critical consideration in the accurate costing and scheduling of a LHOS operation. Tables 1 lists the acronyms are used throughout this paper.

Environmental and economic costs related to equipment fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission present a substantial challenge to the mining industry. Haul trucks are an integral part of the overall surface mining system and they consume a significant quantity of fuel. Consequently, they produce a significant amount of CO2. The objective of this research is to (i) establish a mathematical relationship among a truck?s fuel consumption, power and engine load factors and (ii) determine the amount of a truck?s CO2 emission and the associated cost that may arise from potential CO2 legislation. In order to achieve these objectives, the authors have considered original equipment manufacturer (OEM) haul trucks, which are commonly used in surface mining operations. The research presented here may be used by mining professionals to help determine the cost and environmental burden of the trucks? application and efficiently manage energy consumption.

The current Canadian coal production is approximately 57x106 tonnes per annum of which some 25 million tonnes is exported. Two thirds of the Canadian output is classified as thermal and one third as coking or metallurgical coal. The Canadian coal industry, like the industries in some other industrialized nations, has gone through a cycle of ups and downs. The current world vide recession and stable oil prices have somewhat dampened the plans for a further growth of this industry - albeit temporarily. No new mines are expected to be developed within the next few years. However the production is projected to increase to 60x106 tonnes in 1985 increasing to an estimated 75 to 80x106 tonnes by 1995. The Canadian mines are highly mechanized and are willing to employ the modern technology to maintain its competitive position in the world's coal market. This paper reviews the recent technical developments which continue to improve resource recovery and productivity.

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) specifies that the upper 1.22 m of material on the reclaimed surface should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate tree root growth. One of the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m of material could cause the reclaimed slopes to be unstable. Successful application of FRA on flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor slope movement. Quarterly surveys of the monuments were done to quantify any type of mass movement either horizontally or vertically. The methodology proposed for slope movement was verified using numerical models. Analytical models based on limit equilibrium technique and numerical models based on the finite element method were developed for slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium analysis was done using Geo-Slope software following the Simplified Bishop Method. The finite element (FEM) numerical model was developed using the Plaxis computer program following the strength reduction technique. Two kinds of slope stability analysis were performed: first with the top 1.22 m of loose material and second without top loose material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes. Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. The LUMINEOS network was established in 2013 to monitor mining-induced seismicity in Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD), located in south-western Poland. Since the starting time, the network was improved and today consists of 17 seismometers and 10 accelerometers. Up to now, the strongest recorded earthquake in the region had Mw4.0. Both raw seismic data and earthquakes catalog for events recorded by the LUMINEOS network are fully open and available on the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/#episode:LGCD). During the last 7 years, the network improvements gave us a possibility to increase location accuracy for shallow mining events. This accuracy is influenced by factors such as the configuration of seismic stations, noise level at seismic stations, and the influence of the velocity model. Here we encountered two main issues which are worth to discuss. The first one is the low detection threshold of two seismic stations and their significant impact on the location errors. The second one is the large uncertainty in the S-wave picking. Even though S-waves are not so clearly visible on seismograms, they are very helpful in the estimation of source location and strength of seismic events in the region. In our work, we present the history of LUMINEOS network and corresponding improvement on location accuracy as well as the influence of noisy stations on the error distribution and how it is connected with location results. We also investigate the effect of the S-wave phases and how they are related to the accuracy of the earthquakes locations in the network.

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.
