INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. This work focuses on the operational and safety issues associated with karst voids in large opening underground mines. Issues include water inrush, structural instability, and engineering uncertainty in these environments. Coupled with the fracturing prevalent in folded sedimentary rocks, karst voids are complex and challenging ground-control risks. Traditional methods of predicting karst void locations, such as probe drilling, are impeded by the inconsistent spatial distribution and variable sizes of the features as reported by Li et al. (J Rock Mechan Geotech Eng:232–242, 2010) and Hassan et al. (Procedia Chem 19:737–742, 2016). Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical technique that transmits radio waves into a medium and subsequently detects reflected waves via a receiver. The travel time and energy of received signals are then processed and interpreted. The difference in conductivity and dielectric permittivity between limestone and open karst cavities causes strong reflections. GPR is frequently used as a geophysical surveying technique in several industries; however, there is a lack of published research on underground mining GPR applications as reported by Zhao et al. (2015a; Geophys J Int:62–71, 2015b) and Eskelinen and Pellinen (Constr Build Mater:888–898, 2018). The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the use of GPR in an underground stone mine and to discuss the importance of karst void detection ahead of mining.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (KO88) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron- and steelmaking and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

Start with your assessment of the minerals business —domestic mining as well as operational and consulting perspectives. As a third generation miner, I have been living the mining business for as long as I can remember. I have watched commodity prices produce boom and bust cycles in places like Price, Utah (coal), Douglas, Arizona (copper) and Eureka, Nevada (gold). It is unsettling to see how our industry has fluctuated, but it always seems to rebound if you can stick out the down cycles. However, our most recent dip in the cycle was, in my opinion, characteristically and permanently different. In the past, when prices went south, people hunkered down and waited out the cycle until things came back, much the same as they had every other time. Not this time. This time, we saw a consolidation of the industry in proportions never seen before. Mega-mergers like Exxon-Mobil, Phelps Dodge-Cyprus and Newmont-Normandy have changed the complexion of our industry forever. And that is true not just of the mining companies; it happened across the supporting business lines as well. As a midsized niche engineering and environmental service provider to the mining industry, companies like mine are few and far between these days. The lean cycle saw many of the small and midsized providers get gobbled up by consulting giants like URS and TetraTech. The mentality of a mega-company, whether a commodity producer or a goods or service provider, is different than that of their small- and medium-sized counterparts.

Siberia, a vast country rich in mineral resources and a large number of different ethnic groups. To the east of Lake Baikal is Buryatia with capital Ulan Ude. The Buryat are closely related to the Mongolians. Ulan Ude is connected to Ulaan Baatar (Ulan Bator) the capital of Mongolia by train – a 26 hours trip. Getting a visa to Russia is not a simple case. Visits to metallurgical research laboratories, Lake Baikal, and historical museums are enriching experience.

This paper deals with the development of environment performance indicators (EPIs) for the steel industry. Environmental performance has become one of the key measures of business success. Emergence of continuing pressure from customers, employees, government and NGOs for environmental performance evaluation (EPE) of industries has led to evolve a framework for the development of sector specific environmental performance indicators. EPIs can be used by steel industry for assessing the continual improvement in environmental perfromance, selecting various eco-friendly options, benchmarking, environmental reporting, technology assessment and dissemination, evaluating environmental impacts and building EPIs based environmental management systems. The objective of this paper is to develop EPIs for steel industry and provide framework for development of environmental performance indicators based environmental management system and its integration with the overall management system. An indepth discussion has been presented concerning identification of EPIs, eavaluation of significance of EPIs, their prioritization and its integration with Environmental Management Systems. A new methodology has been proposed for implementing EPIs based environmental management systems . The material presented is derived in part from PhD studies of Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Banded ironstone and associated fine-grained carbonaceous sediments near Jardine, Montana, are enriched in gold, arsenic, and tungsten. The mineralized sediments lie within a thick sequence of quartz-mica schists cut by a 2.6 b.y, granite. Surface, underground, and drill hole mapping are used to construct structure contour maps of individual ironstone lenses. Each lens is then unfolded by triangulation of minimum surface path distances between drill hole penetration points. Major and minor element abundances in composite ironstone samples are interrelated through R-mode factor analysis. Results indicate five significant element groupings thought to reflect coarse detrital, fine detrital, sulfide-rich chemical, iron-rich chemical, and epiclastic ultramafic sediment. Ultramafic factor scores are highest in a previously undefined rock type rich in cummingtonite, biotite, and chlorite; lacking in quartz; and closely associated with at least one ore horizon. Detrital dilution of ironstone, calculated from chromium and nickel content, drops off significantly as ore-bearing ironstone is approached. This observation may indicate that centers of gold precipitation have protected themselves, either topographically or by rapid deposition, from detrital contamination. Gold mineralization correlates most strongly with the sulfide- rich factor. Gold may have been introduced through hotspring activity as a bisulfide complex.

From before the turn of the century until as recently as the 1950s, relatively shallow coal reserves near the margins of the Illinois Basin were extracted by room- and pillar methods. Subsequent development has, in many cases, extended onto ground with high subsidence potential. The same state of affairs exists in many other historical coal mining districts, as well as in Illinois. Pit subsidence in Illinois is particularly common in the towns of Streator, Carterville, and Herrin, although there are others. Pit subsidence is characterized by distinct circular or oval depressions and normally is associated with shallow mining and thick soil relative to the thickness of rock.

As openpit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in openpit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep openpit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high-latitude openpit mines, due to a phenomenon known as atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In openpit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around openpit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CfD) program. Two-dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the availability of en improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX® 64N, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. LIX 64N has been shown to be a considerable advance over LIX 64, and is presently in use in three commercial plants. Results have been very gratifying. For example, one of the plants was designed for operational production of 40,000 pounds copper per day, and in fact reached this output within the third week following startup of the plant. In addition to the operating plants, another is scheduled to come on stream this month with L D( 64N being used to extract and recover both copper and nickel. The chemical properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been fully described in a previous paper. 1 LIX 64N is quite an effective and selective extractint for copper, even with copper contents as high as 15 g/l, but the reagent is somewhat limited in pH range, and loses some of its extraction efficiency as the pH drops below 0.8. Liquors derived from vat leaching, electrolytic tankhouae bleed streams, or some of the new leach schemes derived to solubilize copper from sulfide concentrates are examples of the liquors that present major problems when treated via liquid ion exchange. LIX 64N could extract some of the copper from such streams, but recovery was limited to about 75 percent. Also, in some parts of the world there are streams which are relatively low in copper (-5 g/l) but which are very high in acid (25-50 g/1 H2SO4). Again, LIX 64N can attain only about 75 percent recovery from such streams. For more than 35 years Lurgi has been providing its fluid bed roasters on a world­wide basis. The current total annual capaci­ty of the 250 Lurgi roasters approaches 26 million mt of sulphide minerals, including gold-bearing flotation pyrite concentrates. While the stationary fluid bed has been uti­lized for roasting exclusively, Lurgi has now commercially introduced its Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology for gold roasting in a successful effort to maximize gold re­covery.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, one of the world's largest iron ore producers, operates a 3.0 million tonne per year pelletizing facility at Dampier in Western Australia. The plant produces pellets for the export market using a blend of natural hematite fines from the Company's two mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Processing includes fluidised-bed drying of the ore feed, open circuit dry grinding, disc balling and pellet induration in a travelling grate furnace of Dravo-Lurgi design.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low-and high-rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

Energy efficiency has become significant due to cost and environmental considerations. Comminution and material handling have been identified as the two most energy intensive processes in mining. The objective of this work was to evaluate truck-shovel energy efficiency strategies using discrete event modeling. Energy audits and time and motion studies were conducted at a surface coal mine to acquire data. A discrete event simulation model of truck-shovel operations was built in Arena® and validated with the field data. The model was used to evaluate the effect of using a larger shovel, and optimizing truck-shovel matching on fuel efficiency. The results indicate that using a larger excavator increases the fuel efficiency of the operation while optimizing truck-shovel matching does not. However, using a larger shovel will lead to under-utilization of the shovel. This work shows the potential benefits of using discrete event simulation to model energy efficiency of mining operations.

Peat is a natural organic material of botanical origin. Peatlands are situated predominately in shallow wetland areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Commercial deposits are formed from the gradual decomposition of plant matter under anaerobic conditions for about 5,000-years. In 2004, peat was harvested in 16 states. Florida, Michigan and Minnesota accounted for more than 80 percent of the U.S. production. Reed-sedge was the dominant variety of peat harvested in the United States, comprising almost 80 percent of the output. This was followed by humus, hypnum moss and sphagnum moss.

This session has been organized to suggest to you that the development of direct reduction is important to the iron ore mining and coal mining industries. The papers presented this morning will include a discussion of the costs of making direct reduced iron (DRI), the iron ore and coal supplies needed to produce DRI, the financing of direct reduction (DR) projects and, probably most important, the impact of the DR development on the iron ore and coal industries. For starters, this opening presentation offers a brief statement about DR practice and DRI, under the title that should surprise no one: "Direct Reduction: What Is It?" There is always the chance? that a brief statement may become long and complicated. But, by mixing some slides borrowed from Hal Lownie with a larger number of photographs accumulated from other sources, I hope to avoid such pitfalls.

This paper will review world trends that are increasingly restrictive of mineral exploration and mining throughout the Free World This is occurring in the face of projected huge increases in demand for mineral products Some of the impediments are direct and absolute; others are indirect, but nevertheless effective; still others represent merely hostile attitudes Many of the world governments have a reputation for lack of integrity in dealing with existing foreign investments within their borders, and consequently are quite uninviting places for new investments, especially in the capital intensive natural resources industry. Compared with even 35 odd years ago (and pre-World War II is not that long ago) there are few places left where private mining investments are both wanted and where investors are willing, to go. We shall begin with an analysis of conditions in the U. S., shift to neighboring Canada and Flexico, and then have a look around the world. As the world grows smaller for the private mining sector, the function of exploration, development, and operation is passing over to government. We'll conclude with a view of what this holds for the future
