The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

The formation of the gas emission zone in longwall mining and the potential amount of gas in this zone are factors of local geology and spatial variability within this geology. Therefore, geostatistical methods can be used for modeling and prediction of gas amounts and for assessing its uncertainty in the gas emission zone of longwall mines. This study used core data obtained from 64 exploration boreholes drilled from the surface to the bottom of the Pittsburgh coal seam in a mining district in the Northern Appalachian basin. After identifying important coal layers for the gas emission zone, semivariogram modeling was conducted for different coal seams to define the distribution and continuity of various attributes. Sequential simulations were performed for stochastic assessment of these attributes to calculate gas-in-place (GIP) in each coal seam. GIP calculations for coals of various gas emissions zones were combined and ranked for their cumulative distribution function to find GIP in the caved zone and in the fractured zone at the 5%, 50%, and 95% quantiles. Fifty percent quantile results were later used to isolate a panel from the whole area and create a mosaic representation corresponding to the daily advance rate of the longwall face. This approach helped to estimate the daily emissions of this panel from the caved zone and from the fractured zone. Results showed that gas-in-place in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the caved zone, and in the fractured zone showed spatial correlations that could be modeled and estimated using geostatistical methods. This study showed that gas-in- place volumes in the study area may be as high as 12.3 Bscf and as much as 3.5 MMscf per acre of mining.

The iron nugget process is an economical, environmentally friendly, cokeless, single-step pig iron making process. Residence time dependent process requirements for production of pig iron nuggets at a fixed furnace temperature (1425 C) were investigated. Three chemically and physically different products were produced after complete reduction to iron, depending on the residence time in the furnace. These products were direct reduced iron (DRI), transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and pig iron nuggets (PIN). The increase in the carbon content of the system as a function of residence time was detected by optical microscopy and Microhardness measurements. Sufficient carbon dissolution for the production of pig iron nuggets was obtained after 40 minutes residence time. The pig iron nuggets produced had chemical and physical properties similar to blast furnace pig iron. They were liquid state products and slag was completely separated from the metal.

Shaft 18B-1 is the second shaft to be constructed as a part of contract C547A along the New York City water supply system Tunnel No. 3. More complex than Shaft 17B-1, this site has an additional 30 m (100 ft) of overburden for a total excavation depth of approximately 78 m (256 ft) through water-bearing overburden soil and 145 m (475 feet) of gneiss bedrock to connect to the underlying Water Tunnel No. 3. round freeing was specied as the method to provide temporary earth support and ground water control for the overburden material. An extensive supplemental geotechnical investigation (SGI) and frozen soil testing program was performed to develop the design of a temporary ground freezing system, consisting of over 7,315 m (24,000 ft or 4.5 miles) of drilling for the installation of 95 freeze pipes. At the start of shaft excavation, the upper sandy silts strata was found to have an unprecedented low thermal conductivity, leaving the frozen soil face approximately 0.6 to 1 m (2–3 ft) behind the cutline. The ground freezing earth support needed to be augmented with ring beams and liner plates to support this soil face and allow for the excavation to proceed and be completed safely.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.

The extraction of aluminum oxide_ from its ore is the initial step in the commerical production of metallic aluminum. This is most commonly done by the Bayer Process in which a caustic solution is used to dissolve hydrated alumina from the insoluable materials with which it is associate in bauxite. At the two-thousand ton per day Sherwin Alumina Plant of Reynolds Metals Company, the extraction residue from Caribbean ores is removed from the main pro¬cess stream as the underflow of a continuous clarifier-thickener operation. This sludge, prior to its ultimate r4jection from the process, is washed in a nine-step continuous countercurrent decantation system to recover physically-entrained mother liquor. Control of alumina production costs requires the optimum recovery of solubles from this residue which is generated at the same rate as the finished product. The equipment, operating techniques, controls and process variables which affect the efficiency of this soda recovery from Bayer Process red mud will be discussed.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water in flows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk. To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

Dressed in black tie and Victorian attire, some 200 people came to Leadville, CO, for a September weekend featuring a National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) induction banquet and a scenic mountain train trip to Fremont Pass and the Climax Mine. The 18th annual induction banquet on Sept. 17 began with cocktails and a open house. It was a chance for visitors to tour the National Mining Museum including the new Hennebach Wing, opened in February. The new wing is named in honor of Ralph Hennebach, retired chairman of Asarco. Formerly Leadville Junior High School, the Hennebach Wing encompasses more than1,440 m2 (15,500 sq ft) of floor space in two stories. One prominent feature is a 1923 Wills Sainte Claire touring sedan. Climax Molybdenum donated this first all-molybdenum steel motorcar. Docents were available throughout the museum to give banquet attendees directions and answer questions.

"Sierra Gorda SCM is a joint venture partnership of KGHM International (owned by KGHM SA, Poland), Sumitomo Metal Mining and Sumitomo Corp. (Japan) operating in northern Chile. The Sierra Gorda openpit mine and coppermolybdenum processing plant will become one of the largest mines in the world. The need for optimum production efficiency and sustainability has driven the creation of the most modern, wellinstrumented mine in Chile. This article contains a general review of the project including geology and history.This was a fast-track project going from greenfield site acquisition to mill startup in 10 years. Highly experienced and motivated engineers and technical staff have overcome many significant challenges resulting in a rapid ramp-up of production capacity. A potential expansion to double the production rate in the fourth year of operation has also been intensely studied.The Sierra Gorda property is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, in the District of Sierra Gorda, Region II of Antofagasta, Chile (Fig. 1). There is almost no precipitation in this area. The mine site is generally flat with some rolling hills. The project is located about 5 km (3 miles) from the village of Sierra Gorda at an elevation of approximately 1,700 m (5,600 ft) above mean sea level. The village is near a highway and railway line. The city of Calama, home of the famous Chuquicamata Mine, is located about 60 km (37 miles) northeast of Sierra Gorda. In addition, the SG mine is in the midst of numerous other mines including Spence, Esperanza, Mantos Blancos, El Tesoro, Lomas Bayas, Gabriela Mistral, El Abra, Radomiro Tomic and Escondida, to name a few.The primary organizational value at Sierra Gorda is "Zero Harm." This includes employees, contractors, the environment, the community, plant facilities and mine equipment. A cornerstone of this program is called 5X5S (five by five S), which combines the lean principles of 5S with the safety model of taking five steps back and thinking about the task at hand for five seconds, five minutes, the time it takes to assess and manage the risk. "People caring about people" promotes proactive engagement in the safety of coworkers and others at work and at home."

Pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems provide alternative methods for the safe and efficient mining of the thin high-grade coal seams found in the Southern Appalachians. Pneumatic systems eliminate most of the health and safety hazards associated with the operation of conventional mining and haulage equipment in small low-coal mines by removing powered mobile equipment from the mine. Ventilation is also improved by the coincidental removal of gas and respirable dust from the mine by the operation of the pneumatic loading and conveying system. Other significant advantages of pneumatic coal recovery systems are relative simplicity, operating flexibility, low capital cost, quiet operations, environmental benefits, and ease of automation. The design considerations and field evaluations of experimental prototype pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems, installed and operated in small thin-seam mines, are presented in this report. In addition, fundamental design criteria and recommendations for the installation and operation of a variety of pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems are proposed, which offer alternative coal recovery systems that alleviate the serious health and safety concerns of current small mine operations.

The development of an effective belt-cleaning system for a new conveyor system seemed a fairly conventional assignment. But a closer examination of the project showed a number of “fine print” details: •High altitude location (with resulting cold weather and low humidity conditions). •Long conveyor length. •Troublesome material (very sticky and capable of hardening like concrete). •Limited water. These difficulties are spelled out the challenge of developing a cleaning system for the production conveyor2 (PC2) belt at Climax Molybdenum’s Henderson Mine.

This study tests the ability of a new air nozzle system, located under the drill deck shroud, to improve the dust capture of the drill deck shroud. The system consists of three air nozzles supplied with regulated pressurized air and located midway down the shroud in the off-inlet corners of the shroud. Laboratory testing produced operating curves for the system that showed an optimum operating point of 207 kPa (30 psi) and generated respirable dust reductions of 48% to 52% from the drill deck shroud.

The projected depletion and the increasing costs of petroleum and natural gas along with the public and governmental resistance to nuclear energy have caused coal to emerge as one of today's answers to both our short term and long term energy needs in power generation. In order to satisfy this need, major increases in coal production are mandatory, thus requiring more and higher capacity coal transfer terminals. The logic for selecting coal as the major fuel for power generation is based on many different reports on the existing and potential energy sources, which include petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, solar, geothermal, and nuclear. The following is a brief synopsis of these reports for each type of energy.

Your assessment of the minerals business. I would first like to express our profound sadness and sincere condolences to the families of the miners who lost their lives in recent mine mishaps particularly in West Virginia, and other locations. Any loss is unacceptable. It is time to review and, if required, re-establish a rigorous health and safety agenda in the mines. It must involve a review of health and safety regulations. And innovative training methods for sensing, awareness and mitigation of health and safety hazards must be developed. As far as the minerals business is concerned, I am excited about the outlook for mining. Over the last 20 years, global demand for minerals has closely mirrored the growth of the gross domestic product. Minerals re-main a major part of the world’s economic foundation. And that will continue to be the case. It is no surprise that the fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends. Globally, mining has been strong — thanks to the explosive economic growth in Asia. The U.S. mining industry has performed reasonably well, with notable strength in the metals, coal and construction and aggregate areas and with some softness in the industrial minerals sector.

Evaluation of the stability of a structure under given boundary conditions requires accurate knowledge of the state of stress as well as the mechanism of failure at the critical state of stress. This paper represents a part of the research done by N. K. Bohidar during 1965-1968 for his Ph. D. research in Mining Engineering at the University of Utah. It summarizes the determination of internal stress and failure phenomena around cylindrical openings in viscoelastic media subjected to lateral restraint and vertical uniaxial load. The conditions of lateral restraint and viscoelastic nature of the media represent conditions associated with subsurface openings in rocks. The financial assistance provided to the project from the University of Utah Research (Uniform School Fund), W. C. Browning Scholarship Fund, Earth Science Research Fund, and D. C. "A three-dimensional CFD model of a straight grate furnace for indurating iron-oxide pellets was developed for exploring conditions of furnace operation for fluid flow, heat transfer and reactions. The model includes reactions for natural gas combustion in the gas phase and calcination and magnetite oxidation as well as drying in the pellet bed. The performance of the model was investigated with a series of pellet production rates that included adjustments to the fuel rates to achieve proper induration temperatures in the pellet bed. The model may be used to discover opportunities for process improvement.IntroductionIron oxide pellets are a feedstock to blast furnaces for iron making. Pellets require physical strength characteristics needed to maintain their integrity during storage, handling, transportation and smelting. Pellets are produced from iron ore in a series of mineral processing operations that form wet green balls from slurries of iron-ore concentrate with binders, such as bentonite, and possibly fluxing-agents such as limestone and dolomite. The green balls are dried, fired at high temperature, and then cooled in an induration furnace to achieve the strength and chemical composition required for efficient reduction and slag separation in blast furnaces. Induration furnaces are generally straight grates or grate-kilncooler configurations. These furnaces operate with pellet beds passing through a series of temperature zones to control drying and chemical reactions in the bed.Process air passes through the zones in an overall counter flow direction to the pellets for efficient heat transfer and energy recovery from the cooling stage. Consequently, the zone conditions and the overall furnace performance are highly coupled. Thus, it becomes challenging to predict how changes to any single zone may affect the rest of the furnace. To gain a better understanding of machine performance and coupling, a three-dimensional, steady-state model of a complete straight grate induration furnace was created using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)."

G.A. Carmody and L.B. Anderson We wish to comment on the paper by G.W. Heunisch (MINING ENGINEERING, January 1987), which raised several important points regarding treatment of acidic waste waters. This paper confirms, in part, tests carried out by Allyn Corp. Allyn is the manufacturer of the proprietary product Alka-Ment, one of the materials that Heunisch tested. The first point is the extreme sensitivity of the sedimentation rate on the nature of the treatment material used. This apparently results from differences in nucleation of the metal hydroxides, and is consistently higher for Alka-Ment. This decreased sludge volume is also observed when Alka-Ment is combined with flocculants, such as organic polymers (see Table 1). Our second point is to emphasize that Heunisch's work shows how dependent the sludge volume is on pH. It is common practice to overtreat AMD by raising pH to 9 or 10. This practice, in addition to being wasteful of material, actually decreases the density of the resulting sludge, probably by creating charged particles that do not readily coalesce. When treating with Alka-Ment, we recommend that the treatment be monitored by testing both pH and dissolved iron. For both tests, it is important to allow adequate time to elapse between treatment and measurement, so that dissolution of alkali, aerobic oxidation of iron, and precipitation of the metal hydroxides are nearly complete. Our tests have indicated that from 30 minutes to one hour is commonly required. Only in this way can a minimum pH be attained, with adequate treatment, denser sludge, and lower treatment rates achieved. Thirdly, Heunisch correctly recognizes that ASTM titration of Alka-Ment does not reflect the true treatment value available in a unit of Alka-Ment. Our work at Allyn indicates this is a most important consideration when evaluating various materials for the treatment of acidic waste waters. While we were unaware of Mr. Heunisch's work, we welcome comparisons between Alka-Ment and any competitive products readily available for field use. Allyn has hundreds of hours of laboratory and field data we are ready to share with interested parties treating acidic waste water.

Mr. Chairman; honored guests; ladies and gentlemen: The subject assigned me today by your committee, according to the program, is "the mineral industry and the public land law I have preferred to title the talk, "you can't mine here", for that is the essence of the message we, as an industry, have been getting from so many agencies of the federal government for so long. And, unfortunately, we can expect to hear the same message even louder and clearer -- with increasing frequency in future, unless. Every segment of the industry devotes the necessary time, energy and creative thought to combat successfully the forces that are writing and broadcasting that message. I said that agencies of the federal government are sending the message --- and this, of course, is true, the forest service, for example, and some bureaus of the department of the interior as well as others have appeared in recent years to be abiding by a policy designed to block mineral entry to as much of the public lands as possible and to wipe out existing mining claims.
