Interactions between human beings and their work environment require the body to regulate its temperature by balancing heat production and loss. Comfortable environmental conditions are crucial for keeping workers safe and healthy and to maintain a suitable level of productivity. However, achieving a proper core body temperature may become challenging under different conditions, especially in high heat-generating workplaces such as hot underground mines. Because hot underground mines have the potential to expose workers to heat stress, compliance with standardized and regulated indices and criteria is distinctly required. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current research on heat stress and strain in hot underground mines, collected from published and specialized literature. General definitions, statistics of heat-related accidents in mining, overview of the indices, standards, and recommendations for heat stress are provided herein.

"In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. Bayer-process alumina hydrate becomes in turn the source of a host of special products in addition to the calcines that feed aluminum reduction cells. Though relatively smaller in tonnage, specialty aluminas serve important industrial markets in an exciting and growing variety. Production methods and applications are discussed for: (1) trihydrate as flame retardant in organic materials; (2) high-surface-area transition aluminas as desiccants and scavengers, catalysts and substrates; (3) calcines for industrial ceramics, refractories, and abrasives; and (4) tabular alumina for refractories, bed supports and other uses.

The proposed Flambeau Mining Project is based on a high grade copper deposit located approximately one mile southwest of Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The project involves only the mining, crushing, and shipping of ore to facilities outside of Wisconsin for processing. The Wisconsin environmental regulations include provisions for identifying wetlands, the requirements for minimizing the disturbance of wetlands, and the need to establish new wet-lands to replace any wetlands which have to be disturbed.

In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (US EPA 319 program) provided funding to aid a public-private effort in the installation of an environmentally-friendly system to treat abandoned mine drainage at Jennings Environmental Education Center (Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources). Through this cooperative effort among state and federal agencies, mining, excavation, and environmental companies, college and home school students, Girl Scouts, and volunteers, a successful multi-component passive system, readily accessible for upgrades and public education/research activities, was built. 90 people were directly involved in construction of this award-winning system and about 1000 people annually benefit from the educational opportunities.

Large-scale coal mining will cause environmental problems such as aquifer damage, land excavation and occupation, soil erosion, vegetation damage, and regional landscape damage. The existing coal mine environmental restoration technology is relatively simple, and there is a lack of systematic research on environmental total factors. Based on the mechanism of coal mining damage and the laws of environmental natural succession, the concept of “coal environmental protection mining” is proposed, which combines damage reduction mining and environmental element system restoration. In accordance with the environmental protection principle of “source protection, process damage reduction, and systematic restoration,” a technical system of “coal environmental protection mining” is constructed for the two types of mining damage scenarios: underground mining and open-pit mining. In view of the damage characteristics of underground mining, source environmental protection technology based on optimization of mining process parameters, stability maintenance and damage reduction technology for overlying rock bearing arch shell structure, zoning and time-sharing treatment of surface cracks, and direct drainage irrigation technology for mine water have developed. In accordance with the damage characteristics caused by open-pit mining, land-saving and source reduction damage technology, near-natural stratigraphic reconstruction, topsoil improvement, and environmental storage and utilization technologies for seasonal precipitation have developed. By applying the technology in this paper, the maximum surface settlement value of 12401 working face in Shangwan coal mine was relatively reduced by 25%, the surface cracks have been adjusted from step-type cracks to dynamic small cracks, and since the technical implementation of the Shendong mining area in 2010, the vegetation coverage has increased loss and crushing decreased by 0.06 km2 every year, the environmental restoration period of the dump site was advanced by more than one year, and the vegetation coverage rate increased by 41.78% compared with the background value in the semi-arid area of the victory open-pit coal mine demonstration area. A surface reservoir with a water storage capacity of 400,000 cubic meters has been built, and the seasonal and graded utilization of mine water has been realized. An underground reservoir with a water storage capacity of 1.22 million square meters has been built in the Baorixiler open-pit coal mine.

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. These alternative utilizations include the storage of gases, the disposal of radioactive wastes and the implementation of geothermal storage facilities. In addition, more and more mining operations are being shut down, like the German hard coal mining industry in 2018. But the integrity of closed mines must be ensured in the post-mining phase.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." Between 2002 and 2004, the performance of a six million ton per year iron ore beneficiation plant dropped significantly. In a classic case of “who done it,” was it the mine, the concentrator, an ore change, or something else? While average annual final product grade decreased 8% (indicated by an increase in silicate gangue from 2.76% to 2.99%), the weight recovery also decreased by 8% (from 37.92% to 34.79%). This represents a loss of 832,000 tons of iron ore worth about $16 million for the two year period! The concentrator had been optimized to produce a high grade wet concentrate as feed to the dry side of the plant. But, did optimizing an individual unit operation’s grade give the best overall plant performance? In this paper, the investigation and solution to this mystery will be revealed.

Based on laboratory structure analyses, a pilot plant investigation was undertaken to evaluate a Michigan conglomerate native copper ore. Comminution or sized feed was accomplished using wet, closed circuit autogenous grinding with and without crushing of the recirculating load. Coarse metallics were concentrated in two stages of jigging with fine metallic copper being recovered in a three-stage xanthate flotation circuit. With a feed averaging 2.09 % Cu, copper recovery ranged from 86-93 % Cu with an average grade of 55.5 % Ca. An evaluation of the processing flowsheet is made in terms of pertinent independent, dependent, and external variables and design factors. Rate equations are developed to describe the grinding and flotation circuits separately as well as the entire circuit as a whole. Performance equations for the overall operation and for the unit operation of autogenous grinding alone are developed in terms of suitable capacity, efficiency and energy consumption terms. Thus, the effects of feed rate, recirculating load and flowsheet design can be rationally evaluated. Energy consumption for various conditions in the pilot plant is compared to the laboratory value. Additionally, size and scale up factors are discussed. Recommendations are made for further studies to be undertaken to further quantify the ore characteristics and the nature of the autogenous grinding operation. However, the feasibilty of beneficiation of this type of native copper ore by means of an autogenous grinding/jigging/flotation circuit is clearly established.

Production cost is a measure of the open-pit mine performance and should be the final target of the management control. It is also a measure of the share of the mine in the processing stages.

"Coal is mainly composed of energy-producing elements carbon and hydrogen. In addition to these elements, coal usually contains many other valuable elements, including iron, aluminum, silicon, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, vanadium, uranium, titanium, scandium and phosphorus. These coalassociated elements are significantly enriched in coal combustion byproduct fly ash because the majority of the main components, carbon and hydrogen elements, being removed. Table 1 provides the chemical composition range of the main element oxides in 12 Chinese fly ash samples collected from coal power plants located in Northeast China, Northwest China, Southwest China and Southeast China. It can be seen from Table 1 that the major mineral components of different ashes are similar, but the bulk chemistry of different fly ashes may vary due to the changes of ratios of the mineral components in different coals. The major mineral components in various Chinese coal combustion fly ash are silicates, iron oxides and unburned carbon.Chinese coal fly ash usually contains about 5 to 15 percent of unburned carbon, which are generally chars with irregular shapes and wide particle size distribution. In addition to unburned carbon, XRD analysis of four Chinese fly ash samples from Liaoning, Shanxi, Guizhou and Shandong provinces indicates that the fly ash samples are composed of minerals such as quartz (SiO2), mullite (3Al2O3.2SiO2 or 2Al2O3.SiO2), hematite (Fe2O3), maghemite (gamma form of hematite, ?-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4). The mullite and quartz particles are usually present as spherical particles because they are formed by melting clays, feldspars, quartz, calcite and other common minerals in coal during coal combustion. The silicate particles have usually entrapped gas to yield hollow spherical particles because their lower melting point facilitates gas entrapment.The iron oxides are usually spherical also. The magnetite (Fe3O4) is derived from pyrite (FeS2), hematite (Fe2O3), siderite (FeCO3) and limonite (2Fe2O3.3H2O) in the coal. Maghemite (?-Fe2O3) is formed by dehydration of the mineral hydrohematite (?-FeO(OH)) and/or oxidation of magnetite (Fe3O4) during coal combustion. Maghemite (?-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) are strongly magnetic, so they are recovered from Chinese coal fly ash and widely used for coal processing in China (Fan et al., 2005, 2000)."

Dust generation and its dispersion in a longwall mine pose significant health and safety issues. The concern is prominent at both the working face, where coal excavation exposes workers to high dust concentrations, and also in the return, where float dust accumulates. To address this issue, researchers at theUniversity of Kentucky designed and fabricated a flooded-bed dust scrubber integrated into a full-scale physical model of a longwall shearer. This mock-up was installed in the longwall test gallery at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). A full-factorial experiment was designed to measure the effectiveness of the scrubber on dust capture. Test results indicated dust reduction of up to 57% in the return airways. This paper presents the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and its validation by comparing the simulation results against the experimental results. The CFD simulations show good agreement with experimental results with differences between + 6.9 and − 9.7%. The validated CFD model was used further to predict the scrubber performance under additional operating conditions, resulting in a dust reduction of up to 66.5%. With this level of success, the scrubber concept can be a game changer for the mining industry, and it can be utilized to improve health and safety in longwall mines.

The early part of the decade was marked by world-wide problems and economic difficulties. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter ordered the failed military mission to rescue hostages in the U.S. Embassy in Iran, Mt. Saint Helens, WA erupted killing 60 people and the Soviets and Mujaheddin guerrillas clashed in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion. Later in the year, Ronald Reagan was elected president, defeating Carter. The first launch of a space shuttle (Columbia) occurred in 1981. Also in 1981, the first IBM-PC’s begin to roll off the lines. In 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and Mexico’s economy was in collapse. In 1980, the U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.1 percent, and by 1982 the rate increased to 9.7 percent. 1980 marked SME’s first full year in its new office building in Littleton, CO. The new facility was dedicated in November 1979. Claude L. Crowley was executive director of SME in 1980 and remained in that position throughout the decade. SME’s membership stood at about 26,000 throughout this period (1980-1982).

The effect of discontinuities on the fracturing and mechanical behavior of shale has been extensively investigated on a laboratory scale in previous works. It is well agreed that the lamination properties, including discontinuity and lamina properties, affect the behavior of shale. However, it is still unclear how the lamination properties are affecting the stability of the shale roof in an underground coal mine entry. This paper investigated the effect of lamination properties using the discrete element method on a mine-scale entry model as an extension to the previous work conducted on laboratory scale models.

The Dents Run Demonstration Project near Morgantown, West Virginia, was a cooperative venture involving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Water Resources Division (WRD)(1) of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Christopher Division of the Consolidation Coal Company (CONSOL). The object of this project was to demonstrate pollution control methods and to clean up a 37.8 sq km (14.6 sq mi) watershed severely polluted by coal mine drainage. A study entitled, "Water Infiltration Control to Achieve Mine Water Pollution Control" (EPA-R-2-73-142),(2) was conducted by the Cyrus Wm. Rico Division of NUS Corporation for the grantee to determine the feasibility of utilizing remedial techniques to improve the Dents Run water¬shed. This study showed that the Dents Run watershed was discharging as much as 6,870 kg/day (15,100 lb/day) of acid; 1620 kg/day (3,560 lb/day) of iron 17,250 kg/day (38,000 lb/day) of sulfates; and 29,500 kg/day (64,900 lb/day) of total dissolved solids into the Monongahela River near Morgantown, West Virginia. This pollution was caused by the combination of borehole pump discharges from active underground mines, runoff from abandoned strip mines, and runoff from refuse dumps.
