Fragmentation by blasting is a critical process in hard rock mining. The blasting process and outcomes are highly influenced by rock mass properties and their response to higher stresses and loading rates. Each rock mass is unique, but some features affect the blast energy similarly, leading to similar outcomes. Having analyzed these features and their influence on blast results, they can be incorporated into the blast design to achieve better outcomes. This paper presents a numerical model validated by a case study from the actual mine blasts that studied the effect of rock mass properties on explosive energy production, attenuations, and overall blast outcomes. The results show that when the model parameters are calibrated based on real data, they can be used to simulate the fragmentation process and therefore be used to aid blast design.

In recent years, U.S. regulatory agencies have placed emphasis on identifying and regulating asbestos dust exposures in the mining environment, with a particular focus upon industrial mineral deposits in which asbestos occurs as an accessory mineral. Because asbestos minerals form in specific geologic environments, only certain predictable types of industrial mineral deposits can potentially host asbestos mineralization. By applying a basic knowledge of asbestos geology, the costly and time consuming efforts of asbestos monitoring and analyses can be directed towards those mineral deposit types most likely to contain asbestos mineralogy, while saving efforts on the mineral deposits that are unlikely to contain asbestos. While the vast majority of industrial mineral deposits in the Western United States are asbestos-free, there are several types that can, in some instances, host asbestos mineralization, or be closely associated with it. These industrial mineral deposits include a few types of aggregate, dimension, and decorative stone, and some deposits of chromite-nickel, magnesite, nepheline syenite, olivine, rare earth elements, talc, vermiculite, and wollastonite.

Engineering properties of rock are essential in most phases of mining from site reconnaissance through mineral processing. Review of the literature indicates, however, that property data is scarce for most coal measure rocks in the United States. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has undertaken a wide-ranging testing program to provide more complete property data for coal strata in the U.S. coal basins. The property data are expected to have application in geophysical exploration, the development of pre- mining and hazard detection probes and instrumentation, mine design, engineering and rock mass classification, subsidence engineering, and ground control. This paper describes the comprehensive program encompassing in situ geological, geophysical, and geotechnical properties and laboratory determinations of acoustic, electromagnetic, physical, mechanical, and index properties and discusses results for 500 ft of coal measures at a minesite in the Northern Appalachian, Eastern Coal Province.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. "Drill and blast represent the most important, and sometimes the costliest processes in the mine. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum and Temeng, 2015). The use of available information to improve the drill and blast processes can be the difference between a wasteful process and one that is optimized for costs, safety and desired fragmentation. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets that include a variety of different systems. This information can be used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the drill and blast process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated and sustainable workflows for handling the information.In some cases, the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Wixom, Watson, 2007). The author’s initial implementation plan for the drill and blast solution included using data stored at the sites on local servers. However, we learned early in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed and was available in the EDW ready for use. This saved time, reduced risk and added value to the system.The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, especially highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing drill blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This article targets users that want to better manage their drill and blast data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information.This case study will discuss the process of implementing a drill-and-blast workflow at multiple sites within Freeport-McMoRan (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available from the EDW."

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

"The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"

Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

A new generated NaNO3 ? NaNO2 ? KNO3 ternary thermal energy storage system which has low melting point as 124°C and high specific heat capacity was studied for the short and long?term thermal stability by using the Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA). Based on the actual working condition of molten salt in solar two, the simulated cyclic thermal stability measurement was also conducted. The ternary system demonstrates excellent short ? term thermal stability and thermal reliability after cyclic heating and cooling processes. However, in the long ? term as well as the simulated cyclic stability measurement, large amount of weight loss was observed. Moreover, the stepwise long ? term isothermal study reveals that below 440°C the weight change is minimal and this temperature is viewed as the upper limit temperature of thermal stability for this ternary system. To determine the lost phases at high temperature above the upper thermal stability limit, techniques such as XRD and SEM are used to compare the condition of the salt mixture before and after the long ? term thermal stability study. On the basis of the comparison, it can be concluded that the major weight loss was due to the decomposition of sodium nitrite.

For the past six years, the author has made it a priority to attend the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual conference. This most recent meeting took place March 10-13, 2002in Toronto, Ontario. In the three years since the author’s last PDAC report, the mining industry has undergone a severe trough. Some the industry’s woes included deeply discounted commodity prices, rampant layoffs, mergers, and overall avoidance by the investment community. However, at each of the PDAC conferences, the author has felt a heightened sense of excitement about the mining industry, more so than at other similar gatherings.

"THE MINES OF THE FUTURE The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising as global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yes, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption, and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security, and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is indeed precarious, and the mining community is necessarily a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, many of whom will be mine engineers, which are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems. There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that we continue to expand scale toward “super” pits and “deep” underground mining fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in-situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction, and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment; novel separations, processing and recycling methods; and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions – just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in our field, complete with big data issues, sophisticated analytics and modeling efforts, and cyber-security challenges. Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining, and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that our focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can we make miners safer and healthier on-site and off? How can we contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and long-term, for having a mine next door? How can we help transform artisanal mining practices to also contribute to sustainable development? How can our work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can we improve the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises?"

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

Over the past 20 years, several soft-ground tunnels have been successfully completed in the Seattle area. These tunnels were built using design-bid-build contracting methods, and have benefited from advancing technologies in exploration, design and construction methods. Owners have utilized various contractual means to share some of the risks that are inherent to tunneling projects. This has helped to foster a competitive bidding environment and to resolve issues related to unanticipated underground conditions in a fair manner. This paper presents case histories of tunnels constructed by King County and the Washington Dept. of Transportation that illustrate a common approach to design and construction issues. The common thread is successful project completion with minor cost changes under the design-bid-build contracting method. Lessons learned from these projects are being applied to the upcoming King County Brightwater Project tunnels, Sound Transit’s Light “Link” Rail tunnels and other tunnel projects.

"All-in sustaining cost is a metric used by mining companies to reflect the cost of gold mining in a consistent format useful to both investors and mining professionals. Cost reporting focused on the direct cost of mining and processing ore was summarized in the non-GAAP cash cost developed by the Gold Institute in 1996. In 2013, a group of mining companies, working with the World Gold Council, developed a more inclusive approach to reporting costs designed to solve the dilemma of showing a more comprehensive reflection of recurring costs involved in producing gold, without discouraging investors. INTRODUCTION Mining today plays a key role in the development of our civilization as a source of essential raw material and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs, and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer today than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly. A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production. An attempt to bring light and clarity on the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the All-in Sustaining Cost (AISC) and All-in Cost (AIC). Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses, and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted the past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $1900 per ounce in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow / income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits."

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

In 1986, United States' barite production fell 48.9%, consumption - sold or used by grinding plants - was off 47.3%, and imports were down 63.8%. Meanwhile, world mine production decreased 29.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. However, value of US-produced barite FOB mine increased 46.51%, according to USBM figures. The declared value CIF US port of all imported unground barite decreased from $41.94/t ($46.23 per st) to $39.02/t ($43.01 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of barite with 69% of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and California. The USBM estimates that 65% of the barite mined was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35% was used in the production of barium chemicals and as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector made up a larger percentage of the US produced barite in 1987 than it did in 1986, increasing the overall value per ton of barite. Barite consumption was at its lowest since 1963. It is estimated that 80% of the barite was consumed in the drilling fluid market. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass, and as filler in plastics and paper. The decline of barite used in drilling fluid followed the decline in the average number rotary rigs operating - 964 versus 1968 in 1985. This was the lowest average number of rotary rigs operating since 1971. The non-oilfield market was up 5.3% in 1986. This increase can be attributed to the increased use as a filler in plastics. Imports of crude barite, though down nearly two-thirds, still made up 65% of the barite consumed in the US. China was the leading exporter to the US with 58%, followed by India, 15.4%; Morocco, 11%; Thailand, 5.4%; Mexico, 4.6%; Chile, 3.9%; and Ireland, 1.7%. Less than 1% of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Imports of ground barite dropped from 64.4 kt (71,000 st) to 19.8 kt (21,800 st) in 1986. Of this amount, 14.1 kt (15,500 st) were used in drilling fluids in 1986 and the remainder for non-oilfield use. During 1986, more of the grinding plants supplying the drilling fluid market were closed. Dresser Magcobar and IMCO Services, a Halliburton company, formed M-I Drilling Fluids Co. Mine production in the US will probably decrease in 1987 due to the lower cost of imported ore. No significant change is expected in the drilling fluid market. The average number of operating rotary rigs is estimated at 950 in 1987 versus 965 in 1986. The nondrilling fluid markets (chemicals, glass, and filler) will follow the overall US economy. Bauxite and alumina R. J. Anderson, Ohio State University US bauxite production in 1986 dropped to a pre-World War II level, continuing a decline that began a decade ago. 1986 production totaled 450 kt (496,000 st), compared to 674 kt (743,000 st) in 1985. World production of bauxite also decreased in 1986. This reflected the soft market in alumina, aluminum, and related products. Total mine production worldwide came to 79 Mt (87 million st), down from 85 Mt (94 million st) in 1985. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Australian production of bauxite led all other sources. No other country approached the 28 Mt (31 million st) mined in Australia in 1986, despite a 4.4-Mt (4.9-million st) drop in its output from 1985. Other major producers in 1986 were: Guinea 11 Mt (12 million st), Brazil, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), Jamaica, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), and Suriname 2.8 Mt (3 million st). Despite weakness in world demand for bauxite, Venezuela, heretofore an alumina producer, is now pushing development of a new mining venture near the western border of the state of Bolivar. Plans call for barging bauxite down the Orinoco River to the Ciudad Guyana alumina plant, a distance of 650 km (400 miles).

The 28th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Marriott University Park Hotel, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010. The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is a nonprofit organization whose objectives are public education about the mineral industries, and recognition of outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to the fields of mineral and fuel resources. Funds are being raised to the support the foundation?s educational programs. Among these is the Educational Outreach Program operated jointly by the foundation and the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources.

For more than a decade the tunneling industry has explored the potential and benefits of macro synthetic fiber (MSF) reinforced concrete solutions for precast tunnel segments. Parallel to industry investigations, academic research is being undertaken to better understand this material when subjected to the typical loads expected during mechanized tunneling. This paper investigates the performance of MSF reinforced precast concrete tunnel segments by means of an experimental program comprising testing of full-scale tunnel segments. "Information diffusion potential of a social media user affects how quickly information about a mineral project can diffuse through that user. If management can use social media and network analysis in community engagement programs to understand how fast and how far information will diffuse to communities and followers of particular social media users, it can selectively focus on the most influential users. This article proposes a method to examine the information diffusion potential of social media accounts. The work uses Gephi, an open source software, to extract and analyze data from different Twitter handles to predict their information diffusion potential. The work uses case studies of real Twitter users (e.g. mining news organizations and bloggers) associated with mining to illustrate the approach. The case study results show that there are significant disparities in information diffusion potential that will demand selective attention. This research will help mines develop effective social media engagement strategies.The mineral industry provides raw material for industrial activity to support society (Martens and Rattmann, 2001). Mines have changed from conventional mining practices to sustainable ones because of the negative impacts of mining in the past and increased public awareness (Wang et al., 2016). The concept of sustainable mining is getting mature, as stakeholders (e.g., governments, investors and host communities) are getting more involved in mining projects (World Economic Forum, 2014). The failure of mining companies to address the demands of these stakeholders might result in the failure to acquire a social license to operate (SLO) (Thomson and Boutilier, 2011). The SLO, if granted, is mutually beneficial to all stakeholders. Mines prefer being granted SLO and keeping it to avoid any kind of social unrest due to their operation (Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014). Mining communities can grant different levels of SLO ranging from withholding SLO to psychologically identifying with the project (Joyce and Thomson, 2000; Thomson and Boutilier, 2011).Most of the previous work to understand community perceptions and SLO in mining is generally qualitative (ICMM, 2012a; Thomson and Boutilier, 2011; Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014; IFC, 2014). In particular, there is limited work on how community perceptions change over time due to information diffusion (Boateng and Awuah-Offei, 2017). However, SLO changes with respect to time (Yates and Horvath, 2013), which can result in risks that are not easy to predict. Mine managers and engineers have a desire to understand these changes so as to mitigate these risks (Que and Awuah-Offei, 2014; Que et al., 2015)."
