Based on the geological-geometric characterization of the basaltic rock at the site of a factory for chemical products situated in the Southern region of Brasil, and on results of a significant number of packer tests, the principal directions of flow were estimated, taking into consideration the intersection and the orientation of the joints and the amount of contaminant flow measured in each interval. The tests were performed using the multi-packer hydraulic multitest probe of IPT (HMTP) instrumented with an electric conductivity meter. A method of analysis for three-dimensional evaluation of the amount of contaminant flow in the area was proposed for future mitigation of the problem. Basé sur une caractérization géologique-géotechnique de la roche basaltique existant sur un site dune fabrique de produits chimiques située au sud du Brésil et sur les resultants dún nombre significantif déssais du type packer, les directions principales d´écoulement ont été estimées en considerant l´intersection et orientation des joints et la quantité de contaminant mesurée sur chaque intervale d´essais. Ceux-ci ont été realizes en utilisant une sonde multipacker developée au IPT – São Paulo (HMTP) instrumentée avec un mesureur de condictivité électrique. Une méthode d´analyse 3-D pour l´évaluation du transport du contaminant sur ce site a été proposée pour une future mitigation du problème. Auf Grund der geologischen Struktur des Basalts auf dem Gelände einer chemischen Fabrik in Südbrasilien und der Ergebnisse einer ansehnlichen Zahl von Pumpversuchen wurden die Hauptfließrichtungen bestimmt unter Berücksichtigung des Kluftgefüges und der in jedem Intervall gemessenen Menge kontaminierten Wassers. Die Versuche erfolgten mit dem im IPT entwickelten Verfahren (HMTP) mit Mehrfachpackern und elektrischen Leitfähigkeitsgebern. Ein analytisches Verfahren zur dreidimensionalen Ermittlung der Mengen kontaminierten Wassers wurde für die künftige Befassung mit dem Problem entwickelt.

The high incidence of accidents and fatalities in the South African mining industry, in particular those associated with falls of ground, is often attributed to ineffective and/or inappropriate training methods and material. Recently introduced mine health and safety legislation in South Africa also requires that all mine workers receive appropriate and effective training to enable them to operate safely in their given mining environment. There can, therefore, be no doubt that methods to provide effective training, in particular safety related training, are urgently required in the South African mining industry. In the search for alternative and improved training approaches, attention has fallen on virtual reality (VR) technology as a possible solution. VR has found acceptance in a number of industries as an effective method of training for a variety of work place activities, including those of a safety related nature. VR has successfully been applied in a number of industries to improve the effectiveness of safety and hazard awareness training. The CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (CSIR Miningtek), in conjunction with the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), therefore evaluated the potential of VR to be used as a training medium in the South African gold and platinum mining industry. Aspects of the evaluation included an assessment of the technical capability of VR to represent a typical underground mining environment with sufficient realism and the relevance of the VR training concept for a largely illiterate workforce. For these purposes, a prototype PC-based VR hazard awareness training simulator has been developed by CSIR Miningtek, and a series of evaluation sessions conducted at a typical deep level gold mine. The conclusion from this evaluation work is that virtual reality technology has the potential to provide effective training systems that are relevant to the South African mining industry. Residual collectors and their byproducts (e.g., CS2) in flotation effluents can cause water contamination and even result in serious health hazards to humans and animals, Therefore, residual flotation reagents should be removed properly before discharge or recirculation into flotation circuits. In this work, four thiol collectors (potassium ethyl xanthate (EX), sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SN- 9), O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200), dianilino dithiophoshoric acid (DDA)) were chosen as model pollutants. The collector removal, mineralisation and byproduct formation were compared by sole O3 and O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation rate constants of thiol collectors by O3/UV185+254nm were 2~6 times higher than those by sole O3. The mineralisation of collectors was also remarkably enhanced by O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation efficiency by O3/UV185+254nm had the order: EX>SN-9>>Z- 200>DDA. The Z-200 and DDA were refractory flotation reagents. The degradation of thiol collectors caused the reduction of solution pH and the increase of ORP and conductivity. However, the O3/UV185+254nm achieved more evident changes of these parameters than sole O3. During the degradation of thiol collectors, less than 4% of total sulfur in collectors was emitted into air as CS2 and H2S. Compared to sole O3, the O3/UV185+254nm had additionally included UV185+254nm photolysis and O3/UV254nm, resulting in higher efficiency in removing collectors. The O3/UV185+254nm was an effective process in treating mineral flotation wastewaters containing organic reagents. Fluctuating SO2 gas streams represent a difficult task for designers of SO2 removal systems (with respect to designing the plant), but in spite of the designers great efforts to solve the problems, the operation of such plants requires much care and attention. A fluctuating gas flow usually results from metallurgical smelting processes. Both gas composition and gas flow rate may vary. The first part of this paper outlines some existing technical solutions and presents the Pros and Cons of the different solutions. These solutions outline are: - Sulphuric acid plants operated with a preheater permanent in operation - Sulphuric acid plants with concentration increase of SO2 gas either using regenerative SO2 removal or cryogenic partial condensation of the SO2 - Sulphuric acid plants with additional burning of sulfur to increase SO2 content - Single-stage sulphuric acid plants followed by a tail gas system (which is) designed for periods of low SO2 input In the second part, this paper describes some existing technical solutions for removal of SO2 at low concentrations (i. e. less than 0.1 - 2 %-by volume), which could be used as tail gas treatment system for acid plants. While selecting an appropriate solution, special attention should be given to operating costs, which usually to a large extend depends on the type of absorption agent and the costs for disposal of the sulfur compound produced.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

Projects or project-orientated approaches have become a common form of work in nearly all sectors of economies. This has led to concepts such as ‘projectified’ and ‘project orientated’ organizations. By defining projectification of a company, industry, or economy as the share of project work in total work, one can reasonably determine the impact that project management, and by default projectification, has had on that company, industry, or economy in terms of staff optimization and allocation. This paper presents the results for such a projectification study of the South African mining industry. This sector has long been a significant contributor to the country’s economy from a gross value added (GVA) and employment point of view. Understanding the impact of projectification and the project management way of work on this industry may potentially add significant value to both the mining and project management knowledge areas. We show that although the mining industry is considered by some to operate in archaic ways, the level of projectification has increased over time, and now represents approximately one third of all work conducted.

The paper presents an optimal mine planning system designed to simultaneously optimize all the underground mines of large South African gold and platinum mining corporations. The system, code named PlanIT-OPTIM, is a multi-stage solution involving the use of adetailed 3D CAD-based mine planning system (CADSmine™V4). The mine design and scheduling rules defined in CADSmine™ are responsible for simulating mining sequencing, rock mechanics, and ventilation, etcetera. Feasible production ranges generated by CADSmine™ and various high-level mathematical models are used as inputs to a mathematical optimization engine. The optimization engine produces optimal production profiles (i.e. key business indicators such as tonnages, mineral and areas extracted per time period) by maximizing net present value. Other objectives such as profit continuity, production continuity and maintaining available reserves can also be specified as optimization criteria. The final step in the PlanIT-OPTIM process is to convert the optimal production profiles into practical and attainable business plans. This is achieved through the CADSmine™ Detail Optimization Engine that modifies the original CADSmine™ schedule to match the optimal production profiles. With current methods it is an impossible task to find the best business plan for a mining corporation in any reasonable period of time should conditions change (e.g. gold prices, exchangerates, grade estimates, etcetera). The fast turn around time achieved through PlanIT-OPTIM makes it possible to do several ‘what-if’ scenarios in a reasonably short time. PlanIT-OPTIM has already been used in the gold mining industry to find optimal business plans for a mine.

The paper provides a brief review of a multivariate uniform conditioning and a localized multivariate uniform conditioning (LMUC) technique, and presents a production reconciliation case study based on a porphyry copper-gold deposit in Peru. The reconciliation study compares the longterm LMUC mineral resources model (typical of new mining projects, which are invariably based on drilling data on a relatively large grid) to the corresponding production blast-hole grade control model, as well as the final plant production.

The real cost of any mining incident has, empirically, proven to be estimation-driven, rather than factdriven. One of the main reasons for this lies with the complexity of the cost composition of any given mining incident. Incident costs comprise both direct and indirect cost factors, and in many cases the costs associated with these factors are incurred during different time periods following the incident. In this paper we aim to identify the various cost factors arising from mining incidents, provide a thorough understanding of all the potential cost factors identified, and draw general conclusions on the knowledge obtained. Furthermore, recommendations are made on how mining companies could use the results, in order to assist them in calculating the costs of mining incidents. The paper also provides suggestions for further research, with the emphasis on the most significant immeasurable cost factors, namely the costs of implementing job accommodations following an incident, the harm to company reputation, and the decreased productivity due to low worker morale/psychological factors following an incident. If mining companies are aware of and understand which factors could contribute to the cost of any given incident, future planning and incident cost estimations could be easier. It should, however, be noted that although this study provides a comprehensive list of cost factors (and detailed explanations), other unknown cost factors relating to mine incidents could prevail in extreme cases.

Artisanal and small-scale miners in Nigeria struggle to attract formal financing to upgrade their operations to a more sustainable form of small-scale mining operation. Literature shows that for an investment to attract formal sources of financing; the business must be considered creditworthy by potential lenders. This means that the credit risks associated with the investment must be bearable for the potential lender. This study looks at how artisanal and small-scale miners can attract formal funding, which will help them take the leap from artisanal state to a form of sustainable small-scale mining operation. This study evaluates the creditworthiness of artisanal and small-scale mining operators using key credit risk parameters identified in the literature and through primary investigation. A quantitative study is conducted on a sample of 100 artisanal and small-scale miner establishments in Nigeria to evaluate the effect of these identified credit risk parameters on creditworthiness. It is shown in this study that being a member of a mining cooperative society, which is a form of social collateral, best improves the chances of access to formal financing for miners within the sample group. This underpins the role of social collateral, in both the formal and informal economy, and its influence in improving the creditworthiness of a typical artisanal and small-scale miner.

Viscosity of the slag is one of the central parameters when producing FeCr in submerged arc furnaces. It contributes to smelting behaviour and reduction kinetics of chromite ore as well as to the Cr recovery by influencing the separation of dispersed metal droplets from the slag. A typical FeCr process slag contains 5-10pct chromium oxides, CrO and CrO1.5. The neural network computation was applied to the evaluation of viscosity for slags containing chromium oxides, and the prediction of viscosity in FeCr process slag was conducted. The main results in this estimation were that the chromium oxides in FeCr process slag lower its viscosity, and that the effect of CrO on the viscosity decrease is greater than that of CrO1.5.

The target of the current metallurgical industry is to recycle and utilize all their by-products, so as to close the sustainable production loop. Slags are the important wastes and by-products of metallurgical industry, which have been treated, recycled and used worldwide. The present paper summarizes the current status of utilization of the various slags from ferrous and non-ferrous metal production, as well as waste incineration, and recycling of salt fluxes in secondary metal production. In addition, the environmental issues of the metallurgical slags are addressed. The metallurgical oxide slags have stone-like properties and, thus, their major applications are in civil engineering field. The slags should be recycled, modified and processed in a proper way, by taking the environmental impact into consideration. With the treatment of salt slags for melting aluminium scraps, as an example, the recycling and elution properties of the salt slags are discussed. Our research indicates that the viscosity of the salt flux is increased with addition of non-metallic components, that a certain percentage of fines remain in suspension, which determines the viscosity, affecting the settling of heavier materials. High slag viscosity will lead to more fine aluminium metal entrapped in the salt slag (may also be seen as a high temperature slurry), and thus increase the load of salt slag recycling. Abstract: Data are presented from two sites in southeast England, where problems were encountered in tunnelling through ground containing flint. In response to the difficulties, substantial laboratory testing programmes were initiated to determine the strength of the flints.It is shown that the strength varies very considerably, even within a single flint particle and that the practice of estimating unconfined compressive strength by a single multiplier applied to the point load strength index (Is(50)) may give misleading results. The preparation of UCS specimens for testing was found to be very difficult and it is recommended that tunnel machine capacity is assessed relative to Is(50). Résumé: Des données sont presentées sur deux sites dans le sud-ouest de l’Angleterre,où le perçage d’un tunnel dans un sol contenant du silex a posé des problémes. En consequences de ces difficultés, des programmes substatiels de recherché en laboratoire ont été initiés afin de déterminer la resistance des silex. Il est demontré que la resistance varie considérablement, même au sein d’une particule de silex, et que la pratique de estimation de la résistance en compression non confinée, (UCS) par le biais d’un simple coefficient appliqué au ‘point load strength index (Is50)’ pourrait donner des resultants trompeurs. La préparation de specimens UCS destinés aux tests s’est avérée trés difficile et il est recommandé que la capacité de la machine de perçage de tunnels soit calculée relativement au Is50. Zusammenfassung: Daten von zwei Standorten in Südosten von England, wo Probleme beim Tunnelbau durch feuersteinhaltigen Grund antraffen, sind angegeben. Wegen diesen Schwierigkeiten wurden Laboratoriumsforschungsprogramme eingeleitet, um die Festigkeit von Feuersteinen zu bestimmen. Es wurde gefunden, dass die Festigkeit sehr unterschiedlich war, selbst bei einzelnen Feuersteinstücken, und dass die Praxis, die unbegrenzte Kompressionsfestigkeit (uKf) auf Grund eines einzigen Multiplikationsfaktors vom Punktladefestigkeitsindex (Is50) abzuschätzen, zu irreführenden Resultaten führt. Die Vorbereitung der uKf Prüfstücke war sehr schwierig und es wird vorgeschlagen, dass die Kapazität der Tunnelbaumaschine in Abhang der Is50 bestimmt wird.

Using complex thermal analysis methods, flotation concentrates were classified depending on what the organic and nonorganic carbon form is. The possibility of ultrafine particles of valuable components (noble metals and diamonds) extraction using physical actions of different genesis in the processing of ‘unconventional’ mineral raw materials is considered in the paper. Electromagnetic treatment is one of new technologies in the field of mineral processing. The features of the electromagnetic effect on substances include uniform heating throughout of the volume, high speed and low inertia of heating, as well as the possibility of selective heating. A selection of studies including gravity, flotation and extraction methods of enrichment using energy effects, as well as thermal analysis was conducted to establish the availability and possibility of extracting valuable components. Due to microwave and high-temperature exposure, minerals and gas-liquid inclusions are decremented, and crystal-chemical water is released, resulting in additional defects. As a result, self-cleaning of sulphide minerals from atoms of scattered gold occurs by distilling it into peripheral parts of grains and intergranular space, where ultradispersed individuals are formed. A mine is essentially a series of operations, including drilling and blasting, crushing, milling, flotation, and leaching, that are interconnected and therefore interrelated, with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often causes potential economic benefits and energy savings to be missed. However, the PIO methodology is a thorough approach which considers these individual process activities within the context of the whole process. The basic principle is to optimize the process as a whole, rather than each process step in isolation from the others. Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) group offers a global consulting service for the mining and construction industries. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies. When conducting a PIO study, every aspect of the process is considered. In addition to drilling and blasting, transportation, handling and storage, crushing, screening, grinding, flotation, separation, and recovery, other aspects including equipment utilization and energy consumption and even greenhouse gas emissions are also included if necessary. In a PIO project, it is very important to understand what type of material is being processed at any point in time. That is, which domain or domains is the material part of? This is necessary in order to observe the effect of different ore sources (and the blending of sources) on concentrator performance. Linking the ore from the pit to the concentrator required the development of an ore tracking system. As a result, PTI developed a radio-frequency based material tracking system called SmartTag?. This system allows tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles, and finally into the concentrator. Using the SmartTag? system, definitive correlations can be made between the performance of the plant and the plant feed characteristics, including the domain from which the feed ore originated. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag? has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide1. Successful applications of the SmartTag? system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This paper describes how the SmartTag? system is being utilized by PTI and the benefits being gained by its use in PIO projects, as well as presenting some case studies.

The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

To investigate the influence of orientation of crystal lattice on the bacterial leaching of pyrite crystals, single crystals of 100, 111 and110 plane orientations were used for the study. Experiments were carried out in the presence of a Thiobacillus ferrooxidans culture. The different corrosion patterns observed on the surfaces of the bioleached samples suggests a variation in cell-surface interaction from one crystal plane to the other. The surface corrosion patterns generally reflected the influence of the symmetrical arrangement of the atomic planes in the lattice on which they formed. The results indicate that the surface properties of mineral sulphides may control the evolution of corrosion patterns and consequently the initial oxidation process in acid bacterial leaching.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd (PPRust) is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation. The major slope stability concern at PPRust is rapid, small-scale brittle failure on the west wall of Sandsloot open pit. In order to improve safety and mine more economically, a comprehensive slope monitoring strategy has been implemented. In the last 3 years four new state-of-the-art monitoring systems have been installed namely an ISSI microseismic monitoring system, a GeoMoS automated prism monitoring system, prismless Riegl laser scanners and a GroundProbe slope stability radar (SSR). Groundwater monitoring and visual monitoring have also been improved over the same time period. To complement the visual inspections, SiroVision digital photogrammetry is now used for predicting where future failures may occur. All these monitoring tools provide primary monitoring which is used to identify high risk areas. The SSR is then set up in that area to provide early warning of failure so evacuation can be successfully done. Fault tree analysis has proved that with this comprehensive slope monitoring strategy the geotechnical risk at PPRust is greatly reduced, allowing mining to continue safely and economically in challenging conditions.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (Pty) Ltd (RPZC) operates an underground mine at Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia producing zinc and lead sulphide concentrates. It currently mines around 0.7 Mtpa run-of-mine ore containing around 6-10% zinc and 1.5-3.5% lead. As part of past exploration and current intensified exploration, a massive continuous low grade ore body was identified which grades at around 3% zinc equivalent. This ore body is near current mining infrastructure and could be amenable to bulk mining methods. In the present paper a concept is presented on how it could be exploited. As a precursor to exploitation of the low grade a number of enhancements are proposed for the current mining operations including: ? shortening load-and-haul distances by extending the conveyor raise further down the mine in a phased manner and back-filling of waste into mined-out stopes; ? use of mobile crushing plant at the crusher tip, and; ? installation of a system to allow scoops to load directly from stopes into ore passes close by combined with truck loops to haul from these ore passes to the crusher tip. To exploit the low grade ore body the following concepts are proposed: ? open stope mining from two areas at a total rate of up to 2 Mtpa; ? underground pre-beneficiation of mined low-grade ore near the stopes using either dense medium separation or X-ray sorting; ? pre-beneficiated tails back-filled to mined-out stopes and; ? pre-beneficiated product transported to surface by linking into proposed run-of-mine conveying system.

Open-pit mine planning includes the determination of a long-term open-pit mine production scheduling (OMPS) plan. The OMPS plan is generally a three-dimensional (3D) block extraction sequence that seeks to maximise the net present value (NPV) of future cash flows, while complying with technical and operational constraints. The OMPS problem is computationally complex because it involves the analysis of large datasets, while simultaneously incorporating both multiple hard and soft constraints. The OMPS problem has been solved using deterministic or exact approaches, heuristic, and metaheuristic models. When compared to heuristic and metaheuristic models, deterministic approaches tend to take much longer to solve the OMPS problem when the number of constraints increases. Therefore, this paper presents a metaheuristic model which utilises a genetic algorithm (GA) framework to solve the OMPS problem. The GA-based model was applied to the Newman1 and Zuck Small mining instances, which are publicly available from the online MineLib database. The NPVs for the OMPS plan generated using the GA-based model for the two case studies were compared to the best-known published MineLib solutions obtained using the TopoSort heuristic model at the time of this study. For the Newman1 instance the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$6.6 million for the GA-based solution and US$5.1 million for the TopoSort solution. For the Zuck Small mining instance, the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$99.8 million for the GA-based solution and US$102.5 mil for the TopoSort solution. These results show that the GA-based model produced comparable solutions to some of the best-known solutions, thus, indicating strong potential application of GA-based models to solve OMPS problems.
