Corrosion of copper in aerated acidic chloride pickling (0.5 M HCl) solutions and its inhibition by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (ATT) have been investigated using electrochemical techniques and weight-loss measurements, along with Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements for copper after varied immersion periods of 0, 24 and 48h showed that the presence of ATT and the increase of its concentration significantly decrease cathodic, anodic, corrosion (jCorr) currents and corrosion rates (KCorr), as well as the dissolution currents at 300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, while increase polarization resistance (Rp), degree of surface coverage (?) and inhibition efficiency (IE%) to a great extent. Weight-loss measurements after different immersion periods of 6 ~ 48h revealed that the dissolution of copper decreased to a minimum and the corresponding IE% increased with ATT concentration increases. The detection of ATT molecules on the copper surface by Raman spectroscopy indicated that inhibition of copper corrosion is achieved by strong adsorption of ATT molecules onto the copper surface. The Kroll process is the traditional method of producing zirconium metal by reduction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium metal. This paper discusses the production of zirconium metal in a plasma reactor. Anhydrous low-hafnium ZrCl4 and Mg metal were fed continuously to a 30 kW non-transfer plasma reactor at a rate of 0.31 kg.h-1. Due to losses in the system the recovery of crude product was 77.5 %. After purification to remove unreacted feed material and MgCl2 by leaching, >98 % pure zirconium metal powder was obtained. The overall recovery of purified Zr was 74 %. The conversion efficiency of the process was 95 %.

This paper argues that the scale up of furnaces and the supply of electricity are going to be two major issues that will affect the ferro-alloy industry in the near future, and that economic factors will drive this development. The most common type of furnace for producing ferroalloys at present is the submerged-arc furnace with three electrodes, fed from a three-phase AC electrical supply. The scale up of this technology has now reached a fundamental constraint, which is caused by the electrical reactance of the secondary circuit. If the economy of any further scale up is to be achieved in the future then a different technology will have to be used. The supply of electrical power in future is likely to become amore complex issue than it is at present. Existing submerged-arc furnaces tend to run at fairly steady loads, but the ability to swing the load under demand-side management may offer advantages, and may allow a furnace to obtain cheaper power from the organizations that supply this power. This will have to be counterbalanced against the nuisance factors incurred by having a varying load in the operation of the furnace. Various options are therefore discussed in this paper. The possibility of scale up of Søderberg electrodes is discussed, as well as the use of DC power and multiple electrodes. Some of the issues with load swinging are also examined. A particular scenario is also briefly presented to show that considerable further scale up of ferro-alloy furnaces is still possible.

It is well known that job-related hazards and individual factors influence occupational injuries. However, research involving coalminers has been limited. This case-control study assessed the relationships of job-related hazards and individual/life style factors with injuries among underground coal miners. It compared 245 cases with at least one injury during the previous two-year period with 245 matched controls with no injury. The data were gathered via personal interview and analysed using the conditional logistic model. The significant risk factors were materials handling (adjusted OR 5.15), poor environmental/working conditions (2.63), geological/strata control-related hazards (2.35), lack of formal education (3.00), sleep disorders (1.86), alcohol consumption (2.32), disease (2.23), having a large family (5.40), and risk-taking behaviour (9.40). Machine-related hazards, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption primarily affected workers aged less than 45 years; whereas, environment/working condition-related hazards, presence of disease, smoking, risk-taking behaviour and large family size were more likely among workers aged 45 or over. Managers need quality information for effective decision making. This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems. The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. In- corporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined.

Computer programs which rely on the assumption of linear, elastic rockmass behaviour have been used routinely for many years in the South African mining industry to determine the stresses arising in the vicinity of mining excavations. A description is given of the theoretical background and novel solution techniques used in the recently developed MINSIM-D boundary element program. Features of the program include the ability to analyse multiple interacting reef planes at arbitrary orientation to one another, slippage on fault planes and the effects of backfill placement in mined areas. Incremental mining sequences can be modelled, and digitizer and front-end routines have been written to assist in the capture of mining outlines and general problem specifications. A brief indication is given of design problems for which MINSIM-D is appropriate, as well as some future extensions of the system.

The cross-belt sampler is a device that is very widely used even though it has not been ratified by the Standards associations. This paper is concerned with the bias testing of two cross-belt sampler designs against stopped belt samples and a cross-stream cutter at the belt end. The bias analysis is carried out using size distribution as the analyte and conventional t-testing and the Hotelling T squared test, which are compared for their effectiveness. The paper considers the issue of detectable bias and the statistical planning of bias tests.

"More intense furnace operations require effective cooling in order to achieve low refractory wear and good furnace lifetimes, making cooling technology an important aspect of furnace operations. However, the use of water - today’s standard cooling medium - has some disadvantages, as it can cause problems both during furnace start-up and operation, namely hydration problems, corrosion, and explosions. Apart from these aspects, the energy that is removed by extensive cooling cannot be recovered and is normally lost in the cooling towers.With METTOP’s new patented cooling technology it is possible to overcome the disadvantages of water by using an alternative cooling medium, namely ionic liquids (ILs). The main advantage of ILs is the fact that there is no risk of explosion should this liquid come in contact with molten metal. Furthermore, ILs can be used at higher temperatures than water - up to 200°C. This relatively high cooling medium temperature avoids hydration and corrosion problems and allows recovery of the energy by combining the ILTEC system and the organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology, for example.Due to the removal of the explosion risk, much higher safety standards can be achieved, particularly in critical areas such as tap-holes"

Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.

This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

ROM grade variability is one of the most important factors influencing plant product recovery. Due to the influence of grade variability on mine profits, it is deemed important to guarantee a proper homogenization of the ore through a well-planned blending and homogenization pile system from which the ore is reclaimed at an acceptable grade fluctuation. This study tests geostatistical simulation efficiency in predicting in situ grade variability. The methodology is illustrated using a data-set from a large phosphate mine in central Brazil. Additionally, real data obtained at the mine site during January and February 2007 were used to derive the actual grades of each pile formed during this period. Each pile was formed by a selection of blocks within a dig line and these lines mined along the year 2007 were also made available. Given the real grades, it was possible to reconciliate and validate the results predicted by the proposed methodology. The main outcome of this study is the opportunity to check the geostatistical simulation as a tool to quantify the variability of the homogenization system.

The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

Anglo Platinum?s Polokwane Smelter is situated outside Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province in South Africa. A single 168 MVA six-in-line rectangular furnace smelts dry concentrates containing platinum group metals (PGMs). Furnace energy consumption since commissioning is presented, showing that energy efficiency improves as capacity utilization increases. An energy balance for the furnace is outlined, indicating the measured or calculated energy losses from the hearth and side-wall cooling, the copper coolers, the upper furnace walls and roof, and the energy losses in off-gas, matte, and slag. From the energy balance, the potential to improve energy efficiency by controlling the slag temperature, the slag level, and the off-gas volume is derived. Furthermore, the impact on the energy balance of different concentrate types is discussed, as well as the potential impact of replacing all upper waffle coolers by plate cooler panels.

In this study, the possibility of beneficiation of chromite tailings in the Uckopru/Fethiye-Turkey region by a combination of hydrocyclone and multigravity separator (MGS) was investigated. The two significant operational parameters of hydrocyclone, which were diameter of the apex and diameter of the vortex, and the three significant operational parameters of the MGS, which were drum speed, tilt angle, and wash water, were varied and the results were evaluated with the central composite rotatable design. In order to produce a chromite concentrate by hydrocyclone and MGS, mathematical model equations were derived by computer simulation programming, applying the least-squares method using Minitab 15. Second-order response functions were produced for the grade and recovery of chromite concentrates.

Many industries base their decisions on the assaying of tiny analytical sub-samples. The problem is that most of the time several sampling and sub-sampling stages are required before the laboratory provides its ultimate assays using advanced chemical and physical methods of analysis. As long as each sampling and sub-sampling stage is the object of due diligence using the Theory of Sampling it is likely that the integrity of the sought after information has not been altered and the generated database is still capable to fulfil its informative mission. Unfortunately, more often than not, unawareness of the basic properties of heterogeneous materials combined with the unawareness of stringent requirements listed in the theory of sampling, lead to the conclusion that massive discrepancies may be observed between the expensive outcome of a long chain of sampling and analytical custody, and reality. There are no areas that are more vulnerable to such misfortune than sampling and assaying for trace amounts of constituents of interest in the environment, in high purity materials, in precious metals exploration, food chain, chemicals and pharmaceutical products. Without the preventive suggestions of the theory of sampling serious difficulties may arise when making Gaussian approximations or even log-normal manipulations in the subsequent interpretations. A complementary understanding of Poisson processes injected in the theory of sampling may greatly help the practitioner understand structural sampling problems and prevent unfortunate mistakes from being repeated over and over until a crisis is reached. This paper presents an overview of the theoretical, practical and economic difficulties often vastly underestimated in the search for quantifying trace amounts of valuable or unwelcome components.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) operates a 50 Mtpy copper/gold/silver mine and concentrator on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. BCL has installed an in-house developed data logging and supervisory process control system using a DEC PDP 11/73 mini-computer in the mill and has recently installed a similar system in the crushing plant. Together with the central DEC VAX 11/780 computer, they form part of a high speed, fibre optic, local area network in the concentrator. The in-house developed software, known as BIAS (Bougainville Copper Information and Automation System), was developed as a low cost option to interface to a number of different existing plant input/output systems while providing the capability to make maximum use of computer networking facilities. The package includes the more usual control system colour displays and data logging features, but also makes provision for two novel features: (a) Any user connected to the computer network can access the system displays. This allows metallurgists and management to monitor (but not control) plant operation from their offices. (b) Specialized application programs for performing advisory and supervisory control, dynamic simulation, and data analysis are easily incorporated into the system. The mill process system currently runs rougher/scavenger flotation stabilizing control and general data logging. The crushing plant system currently performs data logging only; however it will soon be augmented with the facility to run dynamic crushing plant simulations. Future developments will concentrate on making greater use of the detailed information available from the mine's fully automatic truck dispatch system which runs on a VAX 11/780 computer. Milling process control will be expanded to examine possible economic control of the operation of regrind and cleaner flotation circuits. An advisory water management system to optimize water supply within powerhouse generating capacity constraint will also be investigated.

The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.

BHPBilliton is a large (US$32bn market capitalization) diversified mining group. Significant organic growth is planned through the development of a number of mining, processing and oil and gas projects, totalling some US$5.2bn over the next three years. The investment standards underpin the capital approval process, and incorporate the requirements for range and risk analysis of key input variables, including mineral resources. Public reporting codes for mineral resources and ore reserves (such as JORC) stipulate deterministic reporting of estimates, but are generally silent on any requirement for range or risk assessment, although they acknowledge the risk and uncertainty in the production of resource estimates. In contrast, public reporting of petroleum reserves allow for the use of either deterministic or probabilistic estimation, and for the latter, mandate the level of confidence required for proven versus probable reserves. Conditional simulation techniques, popular in the petroleum industry, provide an ideal tool forrange and risk assessment of the range of outcomes of key resource parameters, such as tonnagesand grades. Examples of a diamond deposit and of a porphyry copper deposit are presented. The understanding and quantification of mineral resource risk through a technique such as conditional simulation provides quantified information on the potential upside or downside. Heavy mineral deposits are a source of the economic important element titanium, which is contained in minerals such as ilmenite, pseudorutile and rutile. In the Ranobe heavy minerals deposit these minerals occur not only as primary unaltered minerals but also display various degrees of alteration resulting in an increased titanium content of the deposit. The presence of the various FeTi-oxide minerals? textural relations is a reflection of geological processes and may ultimately be used to unravel the geological history of the deposit. These minerals have different chemical and physical properties that influence metallurgical tests and the quality of products produced from various mineral beneficiation streams. It is therefore of metallurgical importance that the minerals are well characterized, defined and monitored during preliminary beneficiation tests.

In South Africa reprocessing used oil into industrial fuel is commercially attractive. The reprocessed product is sold as a substitute for heavy fuel oil that is derived from crude oil (Rose Foundation, 2008). The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the use of petroleum products such as oil, petrol and diesel in Driefontein Gold Mine. The recovery of oil through recycling has costs implications to the mine while the release of petroleum hydrocarbons due to the poor management of the use of petroleum products has potential to cause pollution and negatively affect soil and water. Environmental legislation such as the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (Act 28, 2002) requires that such negative impacts to the environment be rehabilitated. The rehabilitation cost of pollution caused by petroleum products to the environment increases operational costs in business. Field assessment is conducted to identify the main sources of petroleum product contamination such as leaks in piping, overfills and petroleum spills. The areas that require mitigation would be mapped in the study. Recommendations for mitigation measures will focus on using the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) as well as the best available technology not exceeding excessive cost (BATNEEC). The recovery of oil from the mining industry is generally low and very poor. In this study, the effect of proper management of petroleum products to the mine?s operational costs is investigated and compared to there mediation costs of the impacts caused due to poor management of these products. The study investigates the financial benefit that could be obtained from proper environmental practices and efficient usage of petroleum products in the mining.
