This study was aimed at determining the effects of industrial action on profitability in the South African platinum mining sector. We compared companies where employees engaged in industrial action (affected companies) to strike-free companies (competing companies). Industrial action refers to strikes by rockdrillers, as these strikes typically result in the shutdown of production at the mines affected. A t-statistics analysis of significant differences in revenue and earnings of affected and non-affected platinum companies was conducted using data from platinum mining companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2015. Contrary to international studies, which suggest that the spillover effects of industrial action positively affect competing companies, our findings show that profits in the platinum sector decrease significantly during strike periods for both affected and competing companies. The results indicate industrial action is a threat to the profitability of all companies, and that employee demands should be prioritized and negotiated before they result in industrial action. Improved dialogue between management, labour unions, and employees in the platinum mining industry is recommended. The study contributes to the scanty literature on the effect of industrial action on the profitability of mining companies in a developing economy.

One of the key products produced by the mineral sands industry is the titanium dioxide slag, a process that requires grinding of a coarse product down to a valuable saleable product. Traditional methods have included the vertical roller mill in tandem with dynamic air classifiers and, alternatively, two-stage grinding and crushing through an AG mill in closed circuit with a dynamic classifier and secondary gyradisc crushers. The products produced, commonly known as chloride and sulphate slag, are differentiated by the particle size distribution of the final product. The more valuable chloride slag must, by specification, be a product sized in the range between 850 and 100 microns?the more fines generated in the grinding process, the less higher valuable final chloride slag is produced. This paper will explore a technology that is new to both the mineral sands and to other mineral processing industries. Inter particle communition, or IPC as it is known, has been applied in the cement industry to improve the performance of clinker grinding mills. The principle is to create a process of material on material comminution under high pressure that fractures the material along the grain boundaries rather than breaking it smaller than a gap setting in the crusher. The process is now looked at for the TiO2slag producers because of the potential benefits of energy savings and with a minimal generation of minus 100-micron fines. Discussions will revolve around the design and functionality of the Rhodax® both from a process and maintenance perspective, a typical test regime and results on slag grinding. The development of the flowsheet necessary for the process will be examined, the ancillary equipment required and finally the scale-up from the test to an industrial plant will be investigated. Full-scale results of an operating plant will also be given showing the benefits that can be realized. A promising new flowsheet with fines reintroduction to the Rhodax® crusher will be presented.

The global coal industry has changed significantly in recent years. In this paper we analyse the coal production and consumption, imports and exports, and coal prices in China and other major coal-producing countries during the past four decades. The analysis shows that global coal production and consumption have declined over the last three years, in striking contrast to the continuous growth for most of the past 35 years. Australia, Indonesia, and Russia have become the world’s major coal providers, while China, India, and the USA, and Germany are the major coal consumers. The world’s, and China‘s, coal industry can be classified into four stages of development: the stable growth phase, stable phase, rapid growth phase, and high-quality phase. Coal prices rose in the world’s four major coal markets in 2016 after four consecutive years of falling prices. The elimination of overcapacity and production-optimizing operations in China could assist in achieving a demand and supply balance.

The knowledge of the final location of a drillhole is critical in obtaining the expected blasting results. This paper proposes a new methodology to control the drilling accuracy in open-pit mines using aerial images and machine learning. Specifically, it investigates how support vector machines (SVM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) are useful for automatically detecting blastholes over drone images captured in blasting patterns. Several datasets were obtained from different mines in Nevada (USA) and were used to train and test models. We then processed those images to create orthomosaic and digital elevation representations of the patterns. Thousands of patches were then extracted and augmented to develop SVM and CNN models. The results demonstrate that machine learning is useful for drillhole detection and, in this way, to control the drilling accuracy and use the explosive energy more efficiently.

Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. Lack of success in attempts to develop viable large-scale continuous mining techniques (previously reported by MP o?Hare in 2004) led the team at Kopanang to explore alternative solutions to their ongoing need for improved profitability. By calling into question the basic assumptions around the stoping of narrow tabular deposits of gold, fragmentation and more particularly, the range of sizes of blasted rocks eventually became the focus of serious study. This background is briefly covered before the sequence of the investigations is described. So far, some of the ?rules of thumb? derived over the years have been confirmed, albeit for totally different reasons than those from which they arose; some persistent theories on gold loss have been debunked, and some new ones have been developed. Blast optimisation (the means by which desired fragmentation is achieved) has been based on tailoring energy to rock characteristics in an innovative packaging design for explosive charges. Other beneficial consequences arising from the work include increased production volume and gold output, a decrease in milling consumables, and the Mine Call Factor is being maintained at a level previously thought to be unachievable. This is very much a ?work in progress?, and it is empirical in its approach. The authors are the first to recognise that they have yet to determine in absolute measures why some of the innovations have had the effect that has been observed. Also that there other factors which may contribute to the result, but which have not yet been examined. Nevertheless, publication of the work completed so far is felt to be justified; firstly on the basis of the achievements themselves, and secondly for the benefit of others in the industry for whom similar problems exist. Statistical reports of the effects on the business are included at the end of the report. Detailed laboratory test results have been separated into an appendix, leaving salient graph and tabulated data in the main text. For ease of reading, units of measurement for particle sizes below 1mm are described in microns, but millimetres have been retained for those at that size or greater.

The following contributions were received to the paper entitled 'Safety in South African mines: An analysis of accident statistics', by H.S. Eisner and J.P. Leger, which appeared in the J. S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 88, no. 1, Jan. 1988, pp. 1-7. Contribution by H. WAGNER* The paper by Dr H.S. Eisner and Mr J.P. Leger is critical of the safety situation on South African mines and portrays the industry as having little concern for the health and safety of its workers. Moreover, the casual reader gains the impression of deliberate misinformation by the industry to the public concerning safety maters. Furthermore, certain socio-economic reasons are advanced for the apparent differences between the fatality and injury rates reported for coal mines in South Africa and those for the United Kingdom. Contribution by S.A. WATTS. Authors Eisner and Leger are to be commended on their paper, which highlights, according to their interpretation, various shortcomings of both the Chamber of Mines accident statistics and those published by the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs. Authors' Reply We gratefully acknowledge Dr Wagner's contribution to the discussion on our paper. For convenience, we shal use his sequence of comments in our reply. Before doing so, however, it may be useful to explain how our paper came to be written. After the explosion at Hlobane Colliery in 1983, one of us (HSE), in February 1984, was retained by the lawyers acting for some of the dependants of the victims to advise on technical maters relating to the explosion. Contribution by Ms S.A. Wats Some of the points made by Ms Wats have already been answered in our comments on Dr Wagner's contribution. We are fully aware that the number of accidents leading to absences of less than 4 days would be much greater than shown in our bar chart, and are grateful to Ms Wats for drawing attention to the specific exceptions that can make a 1-3 day accident compensable and that are clearly responsible for the relatively low count in that category of the chart.

The piloting and eventual large-scale operation of fixed-bed carbon columns for the recovery of gold from plant effluents is described. A fixed-bed carbon pilot plant comprising three adsorption columns was used for the recovery of gold from clarified plant effluent at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company (West Division). The effluent ,which contained 0,1 toO,S g/t of gold and less than 10 g/t of free cyanide, was adjusted to pH 8 prior to use. Daily acid treatment of the carbon circuit with 3 per cent hydrochloric acid was shown to have a most significant effect on increasing the gold adsorption. The acid treatment involved a plant downtime of only I to 2 minutes per day. High loadings of gold (up to 30 k g/t) and copper (up to 75 k g/t) were obtained on the leading column, while the gold recoveries averaged 98 per cent over 17 weeks of continuous operation. The subsequent elution of loaded carbon in a pilot elution column indicated the use of abnormally high amounts of the pretreatment reagent (caustic soda and cyanide) used in gold elution. This was attributed to the high loading of copper on the carbon. However, the elution of both the gold and the copper at 110°C with demineralized water as the eluant was satisfactory. In a similar large-scale operation, three fixed-bed carbon columns each containing 4,5 t of carbon were used to treat 80 to 120 t/h of plant effluent with a gold concentration of about 0,15 g/t. Gold loadings of 5 to 6 k g/t were obtained regularly, while the gold recovery averaged 97 per cent over a 12-month period. The capital cost of the plant was recovered in 2 to 3 months. The evidence presented strongly suggests that copper plays a significant role in the adsorption and elution of gold under the prescribed conditions, and in the subsequent precipitation of gold following acidification of the eluates. The formation of a highly insoluble gold-copper complex produced under acid conditions appears to explain many of the observations made in the investigation.

The hydrogeological conditions in the Chambishi mine area in Zambia. were investigated. Chambishi is a very wet mine and groundwater discharge costs are high. The research goal was to identify methods to reduce the discharge costs without greatly affecting the mining process. Hydrogeological data was obtained from measurements in drill-holes and from drill cores. The differences in structural deformation in different areas determine whether a layer of rock is an aquifer. In the mine region, the Lower Roan Group ore shale and quartz-sandstone unconformably lie on the basal schist and granite aquifuge. The Upper Roan Group dolomite is continuously distributed over a large area around the orebody. This dolomite is the main target of groundwater control efforts, and its water yield is also influenced by the deformation intensity. Based on the observations, backfilling was gradually adopted to appropriately safeguard the integrity of the aquifuge above the orebody. The overlapping relationship between the aquifer and aquifuge has been utilized to increase mine drainage efficiency. This measure has not only greatly reduced the costs of mine drainage, but also improced protection of the groundwater environment. The old drill-holes that were not sealed after exploration drilling were grouted. Further, possible water-conducting fracture zones were investigated. Cover drilling towards the suspected zone was conducted to prevent the high-pressure groundwater from shallower aquifers from entering stopes in deep areas of the mine.

The ability to conduct real-time material tracking in mines has been a long-standing challenge. Technological innovations such as radio frequency identification technology (RFID) have over the years contributed to the effective tracking of material flow and reporting of metal content. This paper outlines the laboratory procedures and results from testing the suitability of microdot technology as a viable technique for real-time material tracking in mining. The paper clarifies the reasons for conducting the test and presents the material safety data sheet (MSDS) from a South African and Canadian perspective. Microdots from three aerosol systems were immersed in water, heated to 100°C, and crushed into coarse and fine material. These tests were used to ascertain if the technology could withstand mining conditions. A strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis was used to evaluate and compare microdot technology with RFID. It was shown that microdot technology has some potential to track ore parcels because data integrity was retained after exposure to post-blast mining conditions. However, more improvement is required to digitally detect microdots before the technology can be implemented at scale in the mining industry.

Dr. K. Gebhard In his excellent and comprehensive survey on the future development of the Iron and Steel Industry in South Africa, Mr. Coetzee has also mentioned the direct reduction processes as a possible method of converting iron ore to iron. Mr. Coetzee has made it quite clear that at this stage one should not consider these processes as a 'magic formula' which herald a 'break through'. I agree entirely with this point of view. Once upon a time I held the opposite view, but in the meantime I have revised my views. To do so, I had 40 years at my disposal. In 1930 I had the privilege of being connected with the first commercial sponge iron plant in Germany1 - a plant which was capable of producing 40 tons of sponge iron a day. We were determined to prove that the blast furnace would become obsolete in the near future. We considered it as an unnecessary detour to convert iron ore first into an iron-carbon alloy, which contained further quite a number of undesirable elements, and to remove this carbon by an endothermic process. Direct iron-making seemed to be a logical short cut. Unfortunately, we were not able to establish this 'short cut,', but the life of our sponge iron plant was cut short. We had solved all technical but not the economic problems. Basically the positon is still the same today - mainly economic and to a lesser degree technological aspects determine the rate at which sponge iron plants are installed. More has been said and written than done about direct reduction plants. I think that there are two main reasons for this stagnation in the introduction of direct reduction processes. The first reason is that modern blast furnaces are just too good and too economic ever to be replaced by direct reduction processes on a large scale. This, of course, already limits the field of application for direct reduction plants. The second reason is that sponge iron production and utilisation is based on technical considerations, which increase not only the production cost of sponge iron but also the conversion cost to steel to such an extent that under special conditions only are direct reduction plants an economic proposition. Dr H. J. R. Way: In his reply to my queries Mr Bath still adheres to his statement that it may be possible to replace the estimated R200 million reduction in gold revenue in 1980 by exports of ferro-chromium, and apparently based his conclusion on a growth rate in demand for corrosion resistant steels of 10 per cent per annum in the next few years. As I pointed out at the previous discussion at Middelburg this would entail a production of about one million tons of ferro-chromium in 1980. Exact statistics of South African ferro-chromium production are not available, a fact which is very much to be regretted. But statistics of exports of ferro-chromium are available from "Foreign Trade Statistics" of the Customs and Excise. These show that South Africa exported 99,580 short tons in 1967. The quantity of ferro-chromium consumed in South Africa in 1967 was fairly small and we can therefore assume that the production was 99,580 tons. For this amount to grow to 1,000,000 tons in 1980 would require a growth rate of 19.4 per cent per annum. At 10 per cent this would grow to 344,000 tons and at 7 per cent 240,000 tons. Of our 1966 exports U.S.A. took 63 per cent which was 53 per cent of their total imports. Their average consumption is trending at a growth rate of 6.5 per cent per annum from 1952-67, but the growth from 1964-66 was 5- 2 per cent and 1966-67, -12 per cent!

Sphalerite flotation using copper sulfate has been performed in the industry for decades and the mechanism of Cu activation is well established. Despite its ubiquity, many practical questions surrounding copper sulfate persist. It is not clear how iron selectivity is achieved in zinc circuits given the propensity of iron sulfides to be activated by copper. Also, the large variation in copper sulfate dosages across different plants and ore types cannot be explained. Lastly, Zn flotation with greatly reduced copper sulfate dosages attracts significant interest and has been demonstrated in certain laboratory settings, but no information is available on why those laboratory solutions have not been adopted in plant practice. Flotation studies are presented that demonstrate that Zn flotation with very low copper sulfate dosages is possible when using certain novel collectors that are not practised in the industry. However, these reagent schemes are impractical because of a heretofore unappreciated and critical role that copper sulfate plays in Fe rejection. With both very low and standard copper sulfate dosages, copper sulfate influences both Zn flotation and Fe rejection. The results highlight the multifaceted role of copper sulfate in zinc flotation and the need to holistically consider complex systems’ behaviour to understand flotation reagent mechanisms and optimise plant performance. Synopsis This is a summary of investigations in the field of pressure leaching carried out at the Institute for Extractive Metallurgy of the Technical University of Berlin-West during the last seven years. The efficient dispersion of gas in a liquid and its dissolutions as well as the events at the phase boundary when leaching ZnS are reported. At the end two examples are given for the use of pressure leaching in the processing of smelter by-products. INTRODUCTION About 20 years ago, experiments were independently started in Canada and in Berlin on the subject of dissolving sulfidic ores without preliminary treatment by means of leaching under increased oxygen pressure. In Canada ammoniacal solutions were mainly employed, and F. A. Forward and his co-workers were successful in applying this process on a large industrial scale1, 2. This process is used in Fort Saskatchewan to produce about 15,000 tons of Ni per year. In Berlin, investigations were started on leaching with acid solutions3, 4. This process had also been used on a large industrial scale in the D.S.A., but the choice of unfavourable working conditions led to great difficulties, and to giving up this process for industrial use. Later on in Berlin work was carried out especially on the kinetics of pressure leaching 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and its applications to the processing of smelter by-products, in particular of mattes and speisses10, 11, 12, 13, 14. The dissolution of ores and by-products can be subdivided into four steps: 1. the efficient dispersion of the gas, so that its dissolution occurs over as great a surface area as possible, since only the dissolved oxygen reacts with the solid, 2. the suspension of the solid, so that the entire surface can take part in the reaction, 3. the phase boundary reaction, 4. the removal of the reaction products. The first two steps belong to the field of process engineering and will be discussed from this point of view. The aim of these experiments15 was to find out first of all the limits of efficiency of self-sucking stirrers in solutions of low viscosity with regard to the mass transfer. In addition, the effect of ultrasonics in the same reaction system was studied. The experiments were carried out in a lucite container as shown in Fig. 1. Four baffles of 0.1 d width were in the stirring vessel. The height of these baffles was adjustable. For every experiment one litre of liquid was used. An infinitely variable direct current motor, which was fixed with a hollow shaft, served as the driving power for the stirrer.

This paper describes the development of large-scale thermal-plasma systems, which was motivated, in general, by the potential cost savings that could be achieved by their use as a replacement for the more conventional methods used in the generation of thermal energy. The anticipated cost savings arise not only from the use of plasma-generating devices but from the manner in which they have been interfaced with a furnace to process particular materials, mostly as fines. Thermal-plasma systems fall into two categories: non-transferred-arc and transferred-arc devices. In general, transferred-arc devices have been interfaced with open-bath furnaces in which melting or smelting processes carried out, while non-transferred-arc devices have normally been applied to shaft furnaces. Water-cooled transferred-arc devices are somewhat limited in power (about 5 MW) because of the relatively voltages (300 to 500 V) that can be attained in open-bath furnaces, where very long arcs are undesirable, and because only relatively low levels of current can be carried. Graphite electrodes can overcome the restriction current, and power levels of 30 to 50 MW seem feasible, even with one electrode, if direct current is used. Multiple water-cooled devices are capable of attaining similar power levels, but the capital costs are much higher. Costs due to electrode wear are lower for water-cooled systems, but expensive gases are needed for transferred-arc devices. Mintek conducted extensive pilot-plant work in which water-cooled devices were used initially but graphite electrodes were used subsequently to produce ferochromium from fines. Transferred-arc open-bath configurations were used. This work led to a decision by Middelburg Steel & Alloys (MS&A) to install a 16 MVA furnace of semindustrial scale to produce ferochromium aloys based on the ASEA d.c. arc furnace developed for the Elred process. Non-transferred-arc devices have atained reasonable scale-up to the 6 to8 MW power level, and high-voltage operation, which is inherent in such devices, has enabled lower currents to be used. Nevertheless, multiple systems are still necessary to accommodate large-scale applications, and this can be costly from a capital point of view. The cooling requirements are large, and can represent a considerable loss of electric energy. Shaft furnaces equipped with non-transferred-arc devices are suitable for the processing of materials that have volatile species, e.g. silica or manganese, or where the shaft is used to prereduce oxides that are amenable to gas-solid reactions. It is probably in the treatment of light and refractory metals that plasma technology will achieve its greatest development in the years to come. The energy requirements for the production of these metals are high, and very low oxygen potentials are necessary. These are factors that favour thermal plasma. Much developmental work is still needed in this interesting field. It should be remembered that electrically generated thermal energy is a unique temperature source that, in many instances, cannot be replaced technically or economically by the combustion of a fuel.

Introductory remarks Dr N. G. W. Cook: This paper was published in your Journal in May of this year and you will, therefore, have had the opportunity of reading it over the past six months. I can state that experience has shown that the paper is substantially correct, but a number of questions have to be answered. The first question, Mr President, that I would be happy to answer, is how is it that one is able to cut hard, abrasive quartzite with a strength some six times greater than that of good concrete? The essence of the answer is that there is a tremendous difference between abrasion, or scratching, and cutting, or chipping. For example, it is well known that a diamond will scratch or abrade almost anything. It is also relatively easy to chip, crack or crush a diamond. As a demonstration I have here an ordinary bench grinder, and with the bench grinder I also have a piece of tool steel. The wheel on this bench grinder is a silicon carbide wheel, which is an extremely hard material, and the tool steel is much softer. In rock-cutting we use tungsten carbide for cutting the quartzite. The quartzite and the tool steel have roughly the same hardness. You can sharpen tungsten carbide with a silicon carbide wheel. In fact, this is done. It won't surprise any of you, therefore, when I show you that tool steel can be sharpened with silicon carbide. Now, what I propose to do is to change the configuration of this experiment and use the soft tool steel to cut silicon carbide, and if I can do that, I think you will agree that I have gone some way to being able to cut quartzite, which is about as hard as tool steel, with tungsten carbide, which is harder than quartzite. Let me do this. (Demonstrates.) That, I think, is a very clear demonstration of how it is possible, with a metal, to cut an extremely hard and brittle material. What, essentially, is the difference that we have here? In the first case, I held the tool with a relatively low force against the hard silicon carbide wheel. This generated a relatively low average stress, which was insufficient to fracture the carbide wheel. Nevertheless the protuberances on the silicon carbide wheel indented the tool steel and abraded it at a multiplicity of points, and quickly reduced the section of the tool steel that I held against the wheel. By changing the configuration and clamping my tool steel in a firm post, against the silicon carbide wheel, I changed these conditions very extensively. I now had a high force. I had to exert a considerable moment on that lever. The tool was anchored so that it could sustain these high forces, and they generated high stresses, which were adquate to fracture the silicon carbide. Now, what about wear? It so happens that, in these two experiments I have just done, the power I was using was about the same-a small fraction of a horse power.

The President: We are very fortunate tonight to have with us Professor Franz Pawlek, Head of the Institute of Extractive Metallurgy for Non-Ferrous Metals of the Technical University, Berlin. In him we have a representative from one of the few mining and metallurgical universities in Western Germany, since I understand there are only three such universities, Berlin, Aachen and Kassel. The latter is represented by Mr Schmelling who has accompanied Professor Pawlek here tonight. The famous Freiberg University is on the other side of the Iron Curtain, and so is Breslau. Professor Pawlek was born in Vienna many, many years ago, and he obtained his diploma and then later his Doctor's Degree in metallurgy, in Vienna. For four years he worked for an Austrian company, and then moved to Berlin and joined the A.E.G. Company. After the war, he joined the Institute, which had been very heavily damaged, and he was closely associated with the rebuilding and re-equipping of the faculty of mining and metallurgy. He has written numerous papers, and I am sure we are going to have a most entertaining and interesting evening's talk. The President: Gentlemen, I am sure you would like me to thank Professor Pawlek for his talk tonight. My knowledge of pressure leaching is particularly small, limited to a friendship with Professor Frank Forward, to whose original work at Fort Saskatchewan reference has been made by Professor Pawlek. I enjoyed Professor Pawlek's talk, and as a mining engineer I managed to follow most of the argument, mainly because it was so lucidly presented, aided by these informative slides; but I never realised how complicated a problem this process can be. I am taking the liberty of asking Professor Howat to express our thanks from a more technical point of view. After Professor Howat has spoken, and possibly posed a few questions, I shall throw the meeting open in the hope that various people here will be prepared to ask questions. I see one or two gentlemen who have been over in Canada studying pressure leaching lately, and I hope they will ask questions, informally if they so wish. We will not record the full proceedings of this meeting tonight, in the hope that there will be more questions of a general nature. Thank you. Professor Howat: Mr President, Professor Pawlek, I am afraid I am up here under false pretences, because the matter that I thought I was asked to do was to propose a word of thanks, and I usually thought that a word of thanks was taken at the end,-however. It is always very intriguing to think that for all these thousands of years that have passed, pyrometallurgical processes have provided the main methods of extracting metals from their ores. Within the last 100 years, hydro metallurgical processes have become of increasing importance, and it is quite interesting to speculate that the largest single hydrometallurgical process is the one that we operate in this country,-which was devised by two distinguished countrymen of mine,-namely, McArthur and Forrest.

Prof D. D. Howat (Member): I am a man with a grievance this afternoon. The other authors of the paper entered into a conspiracy to ensure that I presented the paper, and finally even had the audacity to say that this was the least that could be expected from me as I had done so little of the other work. Looking at the distinguished audience here that includes some figures who have forgotten more about cement that some of us have ever learned, I realise how right the other authors were. I feel very much cast in the role of the fool who was pushed in where angels fear to tread. I hesitate to say, Sir, that I would not use the word angels in any definition of the authors of this paper. In presenting the paper, may I try to put forward a few simple points about cement that are probably as little known to the majority of the audience as they were to me-at least until very recently. Concrete, made by mixing Portland cement, sand, crushed rock and water is the most widely used constructional material in the world. Generally the production of actual Portland Cement is about two-thirds that of steel and by the time this is formed into concrete the total is about five times the world tonnage of steel produced. A very rough approximation suggests that world consumption of concrete is about one ton per person per annum. Apart from fresh water mankind consumes no other material in such quantities. What mankind originally required was a mortar to be used for joining blocks of stone or bricks. Such mortar was originally made from limestone burned in a kiln and then mixed with water. Production of mortar of this type began over 5,000 years ago. Some samples from pyramids in Egypt have shown this mortar to be in good condition although over 4,500 years old. The progress of technological development was very slow until 1824 when an English bricklayer, Joseph Aspidin, patented a new mortar material which he made by burning limestone and clay together in his kitchen stove. Aspdin called his product 'Portland Cement' because, in colour, it resembled a well-known building stone quarried in the Isle of Portland on the south coast of England. Aspid's same types of raw materials are used today in modern cement production and the product is still referred to as Portland cement. A lime-containing material such as chalk or shell and a clay-type material such as shale, slate or clay itself, are mixed in the required proportions, ground and fed to a kiln where the minimum burning temperature is about 1,500°C. The raw materials react to form hard chunks of a material known as 'clinker'. About 5 per cent of gypsum is added to the clinker and the mixture is then ground to a very fine powder, the function of the gypsum being to control the rate of setting of the concrete. The key oxides in cement production are lime, silica, alumina and iron oxide. The possible reactions occurring during and the products of the burning process are shown in Table I.
