A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

The primary requirement from a hydrocyclone is the classification of the feed solid particles. Particle classification occurs inside a hydrocyclone by virtue of the relative radial distribution of the suspended particles, based on their size and specific gravity. The particle classification behaviour in a hydrocyclone is experimentally studied in this paper. The phenomenological features of the air core at different feed solid concentrations and the distribution of the solid concentrations in the hydrocyclone are also analysed by the theoretical study of flow features in a steady Rankine vortex. Semi-empirical models for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of flow split ratio, and cut size have been developed using the background knowledge of convoluted hydrodynamics. In addition, to validate the classification performance of a smaller diameter hydrocyclone, the potential of the present model is extended for envisaging the same for larger diameter hydrocyclones. The mechanical properties and microstructure of AlSi10Mg alloy samples that were printed by selective laser melting (SLM) were studied to determine the effect of processing parameters and building orientation. After printing, the alloy was stress relieved at 250°C for 2 hours. The microstructures were analysed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine the alloy phases and distribution. Phase transformation characteristics of the material were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Mechanical properties were determined by subjecting the XY- and Z-built samples to tensile and nano-indentation testing. The samples from the tensile tests were then used to perform fractographic analysis by SEM. The microstructural properties in each orientation revealed a non-homogeneous microstructure which was characterized by a semi-elliptical tract and fine silicon precipitates, which were found to be softer along the fusion zone. The DSC thermograms revealed that the material underwent two phase transformations during the first heating cycle. The mechanical properties revealed a higher UTS, higher yield strength, and a lower percentage elongation in the Z orientation than in the XY orientation. Fractographic analysis showed that crack initiation in both orientations started from the surface in a brittle manner due to surface flows, and then propagated via microvoid coalescence.

Today the roller screen has a wide range of applications in the steel-making industry. It is used for screening of green pellets before using the kiln. Since the appropriate size of a green pellet is -16+9 mm, there are different gaps between rollers that make green pellets classified in three categories: -9 mm (undersize), -16+9 mm (onsize) and +16mm (oversize). The efficiency of a roller screen is specified according to the weight percent of undersize in onsize as a fine material, and weight percent of onsize in oversize (loss). This efficiency is influenced by different operational parameters such as roller diameter, roller speed, and roller gap, material type of rollers and inclination of roller screen. This study investigates the effect of different material types of rollers in efficiency of Ardakan roller screens, located in the Yazd province of Iran. The rollers of the existing roller screens in this pelletising plant are made of polyurethane which according to this investigation, has a maximum lifetime of about six months. Operating the polyurethane rollers beyond its lifetime generates serious problems such as high wear of rollers, and consequently, material buildup on the roller surface which then significantly decreases the roller screen efficiency. So, after examining different roller materials, stainless steel 304 with higher surface roughness to help pellets move properly on the roller screen surface was selected as a solution to this problem. The new roller screen was constructed by Fakoor Meghnatis Spadana (FMS) and replaced the previous one. In this way, the maximum capacity of the roller screen was increased about 17% and the roller screen efficiency was increased about 15%. The catalytic converter industry is composed largely of global multinational manufacturers who supply to vehicle manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers ? OEMs) from facilities strategically located internationally, including plants in South Africa. The South African catalytic converter production facilities were established at the request of the OEMs and commenced manufacture in the early 1990s. This near 100 per cent export focused industry exists in South Africa because of the incentives offered by the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which ultimately provide the OEM with import duty rebates. The South African catalytic converter industry is a complex vertically-integrated supply chain with a local content in excess of 85 per cent, substantially more than any other exported automotive component. The industry remains one of the very few downstream manufacturing industries where South Africa has a significant global footprint. This is even more important when it is considered that this industry is the key end-user for two of South Africa?s most important mineral resources, namely platinum group metals (PGMs) and chromium, and is in an industry which will see massive global growth as the developing nations of the BRICs grow their auto industries. In over 15 years of existence in South Africa, the catalytic converter industry has achieved remarkable growth, averaging compound growth in the region of 14 per cent per annum. The industry is the highest contributor to automotive component export revenue. South Africa holds >8 per cent% of global PGM reserves. During 2011, South Africa supplied 59 per cent, 29 per cent, and 72 per cent of the global demand for platinum, palladium, and rhodium respectively, as well as over 50 per cent of the global chromium demand. Global autocatalyst production remains the largest consumer of PGMs, and South Africa alone beneficiated 15 per cent of locally mined PGMs in the production of catalytic converters ? all is converted from PGM sponge (powdered metal) into PGM solutions for coating onto catalysts. Beneficiation of PGMs also takes place via the production of jewellery and electronic goods; but compared to catalytic converters, this volume is negligible. The industry is also the largest consumer of locally produced stainless steel (>50 000 t/a), exceeding 38 per cent of local consumption. The industry is a substantial generator of highly skilled employment, with over 5 000 direct jobs (excluding OEMs and stainless steel manufacture) and an estimated more than 30 000 indirect jobs resulting from upstream and side-stream suppliers. The industry places a high focus on skills transfer and development, with all companies providing high-tech training and education both locally and overseas. The industry has invested in excess of R5 billion in plant, equipment, people development, and process development over the last 15 years to support transfer of production and new technologies to South Africa. This has resulted in significant skills development in the support industries as well as within the catalytic converter industry. The current projections for local PGM beneficiation via catalytic converters reflect a downward trend as a result of production being moved to other global locations due to uncertainty around changes to government incentive programmes. The industry is currently capacitated to support 23.7 million units per annum. During 2011 it utilized about 70 per cent of this capacity, but forecast projections suggest that this will be at 46 per cent of this level by 2016. At full capacity the industry would represent 19 per cent of global autocatalyst production compared with the current 13 per cent in 2011. The industry believes that there is potential to make South Africa the preferred location for catalytic converters worldwide, given suitable support from the mines and Government.

Krige: The stimulating contributions from Messrs Cooke, Curtis, Martus, Johnston, Van Wyk, Van Rensburg and Wroth are appreciated by the author and provide clear evidence of the importance not only of the principle of assistance to gold mines, but also of its scope and form. In general all the arguments, raised by Messrs Cooke, Martus and Johnston in favour of extending the scope of the new assistance scheme can be accepted as sound.

Ion exchange resins were investigated for the effective recovery of platinum, palladium, and gold from a pregnant cyanide heap leach solution. Screening results indicated that strong-base anion exchange resins proved to be most effective in the recovery of these metal cyanides. Gold was selectively recovered with the use of Minix, while effective recovery of gold, platinum, and palladium over the base metals, copper, and iron, was achieved with Amberlite PWA-5. Successful elution of these metal cyanides was possible from both Minix and Amberlite PWA-5, using a 2M potassium thiocyanate solution at ambient temperature. Acidic thiourea was unable to elute platinum from either Minix or Amberlite PWA-5. Effective elution of palladium and gold were, however, achieved with use of acidic thiourea. Using these results, two conceptual flow diagrams for the recovery of these metals from cyanide solutions are proposed.

It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit.The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits.Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels.Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to show the impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues."

Computational modelling methods and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were employed to investigate the interaction of a pyrite surface with thiol collectors. Modelling work was conducted in the presence and absence of water. Microcalorimetry was employed to investigate the resultant energy of interaction pyrite as a result of mineral-collector interactions. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DTP) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the calculated surface energies and morphologies for FeS2 showed that (100) and (111) are the most stable surfaces. The morphology also indicated the appearance of the (100) and (111) surface facets and no presence of others. The calculated adsorption energies between thiol collectors and the pyrite surface were always more exothermic than the experimentally determined ones. When comparing different ligand types with the same alkyl chain length, the heat of adsorption of diethyl-DTC was greater than that of ethyl xanthate and diethyl-DTP for pyrite. Experimentally, the diethyl DTP barely adsorbed onto the pyrite surface and this may be due to a different mechanism of action. In computational calculations, water adsorption was found to reduce the reactivity of the Fe atom for the interaction with thiol collectors, and bring the adsorption energies closer to the magnitude of the experimental values. "A method of optimizing the design of a processing plant has been developed which minimizes capital and operating costs for average stripping ratios and ore characteristics. Models were developed to describe the operating characteristics and costs involved in various operations such as up-grading, leaching and solid-liquid separation.The options available in up-grading policy and the relation between the cut-off grade and the costs incurred subsequently in the treatment of the ore formed the basis of the optimization. To arrive at an optimum plant configuration and a set of operating parameters, the interrelation between grinding size, leaching temperature, leaching time, and various plant recycle options was investigated."

The Soutpansberg Coalfield hosts South Africa's hard coking coal reserves. However, coals in this region are understudied compared to other coalfields in the country. This study characterizes the properties of fine-float fraction samples extracted from a wide diameter borehole core in the Makhado Project, Tshipise sub-basin, Soutpansberg coalfield. Conventional analyses were used to determine the coal quality, petrographic composition, mineralogy, geochemistry (including trace element and rare earth element composition), and free swelling index of samples from six coal horizons and three partings from the economic No.6 Seam. The coal samples are classified as medium rank bituminous C coals (0.88 %RoVmr, 0.92 %Rmax) and are highly vitrinitic in composition (97 vol% mineral matter free (mmf)). The samples show strong caking potential (FSI of 9). The total rare earth concentrations range between 570 and 3193 ppm in the ash samples. Preliminary analysis show all but two samples are promising sources of rare earth elements as the total concentrations exceeded the 1000 ppm cut-off grade. Further research is required to confirm these preliminary findings.

The statistical methods described in the previous chapter permit the estimation of the average value p of a deposit, and the calculation of confidence limits for this value. They are based on the assumption of independence of sample values. As soon as a reasonable number of samples has been obtained from a deposit, local valuation, or estimation of blocks of ore within the mineral deposit, becomes necessary. The assumption of independence of values must then be rejected. Local valuation is possible only if there is a relationship between the value of a sample and the value of the surrounding ore, provided this relationship is a function of the position of the sample with respect to the blocks of ore to be valued. Whichever method is used for the valuation of a block of ore, the following assumptions are always made: ? The values of samples located near or inside the block are related to the value of the block. ? The values of the samples located closest to the block are most closely related to the value of the block. These assumptions will hold true only if the following assumption can also be made: ? There exists a relationship between sample values which is a function of the distance between samples. We are saying that the value x (z) of a sample centred at a point z has properties which are functions of this point. A certain spatial structure exists in the sample distribution. We are therefore dealing with a regionalized phenomenon, and we must treat x (z) as a regionalized variable. This can be done statistically by means of a model chosen to represent the spatial structure of the phenomenon. We shall see that the relationship between block values and sample values can be deduced from the relationship between sample values, and all local valuation problems can be solved using the statistical model obtained from the analysis of the sample values. It is important to realize that this statistical model is obtained by analysing the properties of known sample values, and will be used for the estimation of unknown block values. Such a statistical inference is valid only if the model developed represents the properties of both the sampled section of the ore body and the section to be valued: some stationarity conditions must be satisfied, and the model with the least restrictive conditions is preferred. In the following chapters, the most important models used in spatial geostatistics are presented. The models which can be used when there is no significant drift (trends) in values are described in Chapters 3-1 1. These models can also be used to solve some specific valuation problems when a linear drift is present. A general study of the more difficult problem of analysis of an ore body whose values present a drift is described in Chapter 12. Note that the area considered for local valuation of a block of ore is often small enough for any drift which might be present to be ignored.

"Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) are extensively used in the copper, nickel, and platinum group metals industries to remove iron and sulphur from the molten matte phase. This technology has not changed significantly since its inception in the early 20th century. The typical converting operation involves lateral purging of air/oxygen-enriched air into molten matte through a bank of tuyeres. This blowing operation occurs at low air pressure from the blowers, and the induced bubbling regime is considered inefficient from both a process and an energy utilization perspective. Inherent drawbacks include recurrent tuyere blockage, inevitable tuyere punching operation to clear airways, and low oxygen efficiency as a result of substantial air losses due to leakages.Investigations in the 1980s demonstrated1 that jetting into Cu and Ni converters could reduce or eliminate some of the process difficulties. In spite of these findings, very little progress has been made in the application of these concepts for converting of non-ferrous melts on a commercial scale.As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction initiative, Western Platinum embarked on a full-scale industrial evaluation of generating a jetting regime by using sonic injection. Prior to full-scale industrial evaluation, a numerical assessment was conducted to ascertain the feasibility of implementing sonic injection on Lonmin converters. The work included flow characterization at high injection pressures achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit. The 2D and 3D simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k- e turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow, respectively. These models were applied using the commercial CFD numerical code FLUENT.This paper discusses the key findings regard ing understanding of gas plume extension, velocity distribution, shear wall stress analysis, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. Plant trials are also discussed with reference to the commercial aspects of a fullscale implementation of sonic injection in the smelter."

Nanobubbles (NBs) flotation separation can be an indicator for improving the efficiency of fine particles through the conventional process. Since flotation reagents such as frothers can reduce bubble size, they can potentially be used for the generation of NBs and develop a selective NB flotation separation. This study explored the flotation separation of fine phosphate particles from their associated minerals in the presence of NBs, which were generated by using a phosphate flotation reagent (Flo-YS: collector-frother). The results of flotation tests showed that in the presence of NBs, the flotation efficiency was significantly improved. However, in the presence of NBs, surface chemistry analyses (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) illustrated that the collector adsorption on the surface of phosphate particles decreased. A comparison between outcomes of various phosphate flotation conditions indicated that increasing the flotation efficiency in the presence of NBs may be due to the aggregation of fine particles by the generated NBs, and also selective adsorption of NBs (hydrophobisation) on the surface of particles. In other words, generating NBs by selective collectors may increase efficiency and decrease the collector consumption of a flotation process. Electrostatic separation is employed in the concentration of zircon and rutile. The zircon concentrate undergoes an acid treatment to remove impurities from the surface of both the zircon and rutile. The purpose of the acid treatment is to increase the difference in the resistivities of the two minerals, thus ensuring the best possible electrostatic separation efficiencies. Previous test work suggested that these impurities are not removed, but only modified; the surface modification seemed more prevalent in the case of the rutile. The resistivity of the rutile changes with pH and thus the electrostatic separation of the rutile is influenced. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates that there is an increase in the OH and adsorbed H2O concentrations on the rutile surface. XPS also showed significant differential charging on the rutile surface, which indicates that the species on the rutile surface have different resistivities. The zircon particles from the conducting and non-conducting streams have similar resistivities and no major differences in their surface species. Zircon losses during the final electrostatic separation appear not to be due to surface effects, but due to shielding of particles during the separation.
