Mining operations are generally reluctant to install high-cost sampling systems at operations that have been functioning for many years. The principal objection to installing appropriate equipment to extract correct and representative samples in process flows is the time and costs involved. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) provides a structured framework for identifying and quantifying the errors and bias associated with any sampling event, but this may be insufficient to initiate substantial investment in correctly designed sampling equipment. Financial losses arising from substandard sampling installations are usually disregarded because the value-add from a good quality sampling solution is invisible, but the cost is quite obvious. Depending on the needs, a less-than-perfect or fit-for-purpose sampling solution may be acceptable, provided the magnitude of sampling errors is understood and the assay results are interpreted accordingly. Categorical levels of acceptable accuracy and precision can be established depending on the sampling position in the mining value chain and the nature of the decisions to be made. The objective benefits of proposed fit-for-purpose sampling solutions should be presented to relevant decision-makers in such a way that adverse subjective decisions are countered so that appropriate solutions are implemented. Practical examples of the benefits from motivating the implementation of fit for purpose sampling solutions at sampling facilities around the world are provided.

"Parts manufactured through power metallurgy (PM) typically contain pores that can be detrimental to the final mechanical properties. This paper explores the merits of 3D X-ray computed tomography over traditional microscopy for the characterization of the evolution of porosity in metal injection moulding (MIM) and direct powder rolling (DPR) products. 17-4 PH stainless steel (as-moulded, as-debound and sintered) dog-bone samples produced via MIM and Ti-HDH strips (as-rolled and sintered) produced via DPR and were analysed for porosity. 3D microfocus X-ray tomography (XCT) analysis on specimens from both processes revealed spatial variations in densities and the existence of characteristic moulding and roll compaction defects in agreement with traditional microscopic microstructural analysis. It was concluded that micro-focus XCT scanning can be used to study MIM and DPR parts for the characterization of the amount, position and distribution of porosity and other defects. However, the majority of the sub-micron sized pores could not be clearly resolved even at the highest possible instrument resolution. Higher-resolution scans such as nano-focus XCT could be utilized in order to fully study the porosity in MIM and DPR parts. IntroductionMetal injection moulding (MIM) is a novel process, which combines the advantages of powder metallurgy (PM) and plastic injection moulding. MIM has found widespread applications in the cost-effective production of high-sintered density small parts with complicated shapes and mechanical properties equivalent to those of wrought materials (German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013). There are four basic processing steps involved in MIM, namely; feedstock preparation, injection moulding, debinding and sintering. These steps are discussed in greater detail elsewhere (Machaka, Seerane and Chikwanda, 2014; German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013).Feedstock preparation involves mixing metal powder with a carefully selected composition of polymeric binder materials at a specific temperature. The feedstock is then granulated and injected into a predefined mould die with the desired shape. The part produced during the moulding step is referred to as a ‘green’ component. The green component typically contains no porosity since the spaces between adjacent powder particles are readily filled with the binder materials (German and Bose, 1977; Li, Li and Khalil, 2007). Debinding is the systemic removal of the binder components by chemical, catalytic, or/and thermal means while maintaining the shape of the component. The part produced after the debinding step is referred to as a ‘brown’ component. Debinding is known to be the source of porosity in brown components (Ji et al., 2001; Tsai and Cen, 1995). Finally, the brown debound part is sintered to full or nearfull density (Sotomayor, Varez and Levenfeld, 2010). The sintering step and associated densification closes up the majority of the pores. Sintered MIM parts are typically sintered to high density (95–99%) and retain an irreducible amount of residual porosity (Barriere, Liu and Gelin, 2003; German, 1990)."

Based on many years experience, the well proven Swiss Tunnel Seismic Prediction System TSP has been substantially augmented for online geological prognosis in underground construction. In its latest version, the Integrated Seismic Imaging System ISIS provides high resolution seismic images of the rock mass around a tunnel face via an array of standard anchor rods. These rods contain 3D-geophones at their tips and can be readily installed during excavation work. A further innovative component of the system is the newly developed high-power repetitive source for application in hard rock: a pneumatic hammer with laser triggering to be mounted on construction machinery. A user-friendly software package permits online data acquisition and processing, 3D-visualization, and a first geological interpretation. Tomographic images of compressional and shear wave velocity fields at fault zones in metamorphic rock of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Central Alps are presented. Das langjährig bewährte Schweizer Tunnelseismische Vorauserkundungssystem TSP wurde inzwischen wesentlich weiterentwickelt. In seiner neuen Version, dem Integrierten Seismischen Imaging System ISIS, ermöglicht es hochauflösende seismische Abbildungen des Gebirges im Vorfeld und Umfeld einer Tunnelauffahrung mit Hilfe einer Anordnung von Felsankern, die an ihren Spitzen 3-Komponenten-Geophone enthalten. The grinding circuit can be one of the most important mineral processing circuits in plants. Along with the application of large-scale milling machines, the design and optimisation of the operation strategy for grinding circuits is more complicated. An in-house grinding process simulation tool was developed to mass balance, model fit and simulate crushing, grinding and classification circuits. An industrial grinding and classification circuit in a copper mine was modelled, and the modelling parameters were verified by a particular group of plant survey data. To justify the prediction ability of the fitted models, the model predictions under different operation conditions were compared with another group of plant survey data. Then the model predicted the effects on the circuit of changing operating conditions. Circuit analysis of the comminution process for water feed to a SAG mill, water feed to sump, the rolling speed of a SAG mill and the percentage of ball filling in a SAG mill was put into practise, based on the simulation results. The simulation results can be used to help plant operators understand the features of the comminution process and may help to build a knowledge library for process control. The global liquified natural gas (LNG) storage market size is projected to reach USD17.5 billion by 2025. Currently, owed to its high toughness, tensile strength, and excellent weldability, the 9% nickel steel is the most used in building infrastructure for cryogenic applications such as the construction of tanks and pipes for storage and transportation of LNG. However, this alloy is not readily available because of its complex production process and high cost. This provides an opportunity for suitable alternative materials to build infrastructure for cryogenic applications. Among strong contenders is the Fe-Mn based alloys, which have sparked global interest due to their desirable properties such as relatively lower density, low cost, high toughness and strength, due to a high manganese (Mn) content. These attractive properties render Fe-Mn based alloys preferred candidates to replace traditional steels in engineering applications in which strengthweight ratio is critical. In response, as a build-up to designing and developing austenitic Fe- Mn alloys, the present study employed density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles computational materials modelling technique to investigate the structural, thermodynamic, and magnetic properties of binary Fe-Mn alloy composition in competing FCC, HCP, and BCC crystal structures. Using this approach, it was possible to unravel the key underlying elastic properties that are directly correlated to experimental tensile strength and high toughness in binary Fe-Mn alloys. Besides successfully validating the existing experimental data, the current predicted properties and the deployed approach will serve as a benchmark from which further alloying required to improve other properties will be conducted.

Spiral separators have been widely accepted as one of the most flexible gravity separation devices for several decades. The International Journal of Mineral Processing, 84, pp. 118 – 132 mentioned that spirals are for treating material too coarse for flotation and too fine for dense-media separation. Powder Technology V 102, pp 244 – 252, 1999 stated that there exists a genuine need for extending the performance envelope of spirals – whether to treat finer or coarser material than the traditional size ranges. In recent times there has been an upsurge in interest, particularly in the development of newer fine gravity separators. Spiral separators for the recovery of ultra-fine particles have a unique profile, pitch and features to ensure efficient performance. The flow on the spiral trough must be controlled to minimise turbulence that will entrain fine particles in the outer section of the trough. The experimental test work showed a movement of mass from the outer region towards the centre column of the spiral, i.e., from the fine tailings band towards the concentrate. As recovery on the spiral trough is a function of mass yield and grade, the ultra-fine 7 spiral had a better recovery than the HX5. This makes the UF7 an ideal rougher spiral. The magnesia-carbon refractories used in the ConArc process experience severe wear as a result of the varying slag composition during the blowing phase. This work determines the basicity range in which minimum as well as maximum refractory wear was experienced by the magnesia-carbon refractories during service. In order to determine an optimum slag composition, the crucible test in an induction furnace was used. The magnesia-carbon refractory bricks were cut into cylindrical crucibles to which a synthetic slag in the form of pellets was added. The basicity (B2) of the slag was varied from 0.5 to 3. Tests were done at 1 600°C for one hour. Apart from the crucible test in an induction furnace, visual inspection and SEM analysis were also done to investigate the corrosion mechanism. FACTSage® predictions about the interaction between refractories and slag were also done. These predictions were compared to the actual results attained. It was found that the extent of corrosion by slag attack decreases as the basicity increases. The most severe corrosion of the MgO-C refractories occurred at a basicity of 0.5 whereas the optimum basicity is above 2.0. SEM analysis indicated severe slag attack at the lower basicities with no visible refractory-slag interaction at higher basicities. TheFACTSage® predictions supported most of the actual findings. "Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy sorting technology is incorporated in an automated optical mineral sorter that can discriminate between materials using the differences in characteristics when exposed to near-infrared radiation. During September 2014 to April 2015, a pilot plant that utilized NIR technology to discriminate between kimberlite and waste materials was commissioned to determine the viability of including this technology in the diamond winning process flow sheet at Cullinan Diamond Mine. The plant was used to minimize the waste content in the size fraction -70+35 mm that reports to the crushing section and then to the dense media separation process. This paper describes the initial test work, conducted at Mintek, that led to the decision to conduct a pilot-scale study. The mineralogical characterization of the feed and product streams to establish the sorting criteria and the operational data obtained during the pilot plant campaign are described. The results indicated a good possibility of discriminating between the kimberlite and waste material using NIR technology. However, the consistency of discrimination was not good enough to avoid the risk of potential diamond loss. Furthermore, a lower than expected availability of the machine reduced the throughput capabilities. IntroductionUsing near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology for ore sorting is a new concept for the mineral processing and mining industry. NIRS has been used for decades in the laboratory for the identification of pure minerals, and has its roots in the recycling, food, and pharmaceutical industries (Salter and Wyatt, 1991; Robben et al., 2009). Ore sorting in itself is not a new concept; it was introduced during the Stone Age with handsorting being the first method to separate valuable materials from gangue (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006; Sassos, 1985). However, over the years the scale of mining has increased and hand-sorting has become challenging to implement (Joensson, 2014).Sensor-based sorting is an advanced technology that can help overcome problems such as ore dilution experienced in mineral processing operations. The benefits are lower energy and water costs, reduced ore dilution, lower environmental impact, and improved profit margin (Mathew, 1974; Jonsson, 2014; Salter and Wyatt, 2009; Death et al., 2009). In sensor-based sorting, materials are mechanically sorted based on certain physical properties that are detected by a sensor (Dalm, 2013). Research has found that with NIR scanners it is possible to obtain a ‘fingerprint’ of a sample that is directly related to its mineralogical composition. According to Woutruba et al. (2009), molecules absorb NIR radiation by means of electronic and vibrational transitions. Nowadays, there are many sensors available in the market that utilize different material properties; the choice of a sensor is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore."

The application of modifying factors to the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Layer has a number of challenging aspects as the deposits are tabular and consist of a number of separate geological entities that are grade bearing. The important aspects of the conversion include mineral holdings, dilution with grade bearing material, mining and geological losses, marginal cut offs and recoveries especially where open pit or weathered material is being considered. It is considered inappropriate to add material for dilution at zero grade as the associated material generally comes with an associated low grade. The Merensky Reef Is typically a pegmatoidal feldspathic pyroxenite with bounding chromitite layers. The Merensky Reef is senso stricto too narrow to be considered as a mineable entity and therefore any reserve must include material at low or marginal grades. This is further complicated as the typical mine cut or approach varies across a mine of project. This variation must be included in the mineral reserve conversion. The UG2 Chromitite Layer is typically lithologically bounded i.e. chromitite hosted. However, this adds interesting aspects particularly where leaders are intersected in the hangingwall. These can contribute to unstable hangingwall. It may be considered appropriate to include these in the mineral reserve. One of the overarching principles is that the reserve can be demonstrates to be feasible i.e. can be mined at a profit. Here aspects of a feasibility including infrastructure (power, water etc) needs to be properly considered. The paper will attempt to describe these and other relevant issues and highlight examples from experience together with proposed solutions.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

Methane explosions in underground coal mines are a major concern across the mining industry. After the Pike River disaster, Arnot Coal became even more aware of the explosion risk. To determine whether Arnot has adequate precautions against a methane explosion, such as the one that led to the Pike River disaster, a literature survey covering the causes of the incident and what preventative measures should have been in place was conducted. Many different methane explosion prevention methods were evaluated, as well as codes of practice. Based on the findings, Arnot?s measures to prevent conditions favourable for a methane explosion were evaluated.

Open pit slope stability analyses for large scale instabilities are often carried out using limit equilibrium, finite element or finite difference computer programs. All of these require empirical estimates of rock mass shear strength when calibrated values are not available, which is a common occurrence. A common method of estimating rock mass shear strength is the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which often over- or underestimates rock mass shear strength when used in limit equilibrium or elastic linearly plastic slope stability analyses, resulting in published alternative estimates for the coefficients of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. This paper investigates the differences between limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic slope stability analysis based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The investigation consisted of a comparison of 3840 RS2 finite element analysis models completed with strain softening, and 216 Slide2 limit equilibrium models. The models were used to evaluate a methodology to determine equivalent limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic shear strength parameters that provide the same stable slope angles and instability back break distances as the more representative strain softening stress analysis methods. This paper presents the methodology and compiles the results into design charts and equations for equivalent limit equilibrium Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters, that simplify calibration against actual case studies. The results compare well with older empirical shear strength estimates, however, a detailed calibration of the results against case studies will need to be carried out. The analysis also did not consider pore pressure effects; this is left for future publication.

"In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

Investigations were conducted to determine the condition and stability of the existing decline at amine in the Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. During the inspection of the decline, voids were identified behind the concrete lining on the hangingwall and sidewalls over a total linear distance of 230 m. The voids did not provide confinement and, as a result, self-mining was occurring behind the lining. Water was flowing into the decline, over a total linear distance of 100 m, at areas where the decline intersected incompetent rock units, causing softening of the concrete lining and deterioration of the surrounding rock mass. Further damage to the concrete lining was caused by expansion and contraction of the wet red clay unit. Remedial work comprised void filling and water sealing to prevent further deterioration of the decline and ensure that it remained operable for the remainder of the life of mine. Void filling was accomplished by drilling rows of holes along the decline to access the voids and filling the voids with foam. This was followed by the sealing with polymer fluids. Telescopic pipes were also installed to allow water to drain off. A visual inspection was conducted and check-holes were drilled to assess the quality of the remedial work. The void filling material had penetrated cracks in the concrete lining, and areas where voids were intersected by check-holes were re-filled. Additional holes were drilled to re-seal areas that were still wet. The remedial work was completed successfully, as all voids were filled and stability achieved without compromising the concrete lining. The ingress of groundwater was also reduced to some residual dampness.

Muckpile fragmentation formed by blasting depends on the specific charge factor, the discontinuities in the rock mass, and the rock strength. Determination of the discontinuity characteristics and rock strength is a long and difficult process. These two parameters are directly associated with the rock drilling speed. Therefore, it is the drilling speed of the machine used for the blast-hole, rather than the blasthole discontinuity characteristics and rock strength parameters, that is used in the prediction of muckpile fragmentation before blasting. Primarily, it has been suggested that the muckpile fragmentation values can be correctly determined by establishing correlations between the efficiency of the loader and muck pile fragmentation, since fragmentation is directly correlated with the former parameter. Subsequently, a correlation predicting the drilling speed of the drill machine was developed according to the discontinuity characteristics of the blasting surface and the rock strength.
