The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since In most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move throug the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, this coincident production of natural gas will contime as long as present day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, and markets are not readily available Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced at such times is often wasted by being blown into the air.

This report presents a representative cross section of methods success- fully used to ventilate continuous-miner places as well as various factors that should be considered when selecting auxiliary ventilating equipment. Line brattice can direct fresh air to the active face reasonably well, provided that adequate area for installation is available. Continuous mining equipment, however, often restricts clearances to such an extent that proper installation of line brattice is impossible. Consequently, in many instances face ventilation is inadequate; therefore, many methods of auxiliary ventilation for continuous-mining equipment have been developed and have been discussed in this study.

It may be necessary, therefore, to collect samples of dust from the air. Samples collected from the air may be analyzed chemically, by X-ray diffraction, and by the petrographic microscope. Chemical methods are unsatisfactory owing to the small samples usually available and to the limitations and complexities of: present methods. X-ray technique requires expensive apparatus not ordinarily available except in research laboratories. Owing to the simplicity and rapidity of petrographic is examination of atmospheric mineral dusts, it was considered worthy of further study.

Advertisements and articles in technical and trade journals announce the approach of a new age, in which plastics, light metals, laminated wood, and numerous other products or byproducts will be used in the construction of automobiles, airplanes, and furniture and equipment used in our factories, offices, and homes. Undoubtedly, after the war there will be many such developments which will introduce new manufacturing methods and new hazards to challenge the safety engineer. Already we know, from experience in laboratories and pilot plants where these new products are being tested, that there will be many fire and explosion hazards to be overcome. The danger of dust explosions may be one of the principal hazards, because thetic resins and other materials used in the plastics industry, as well as metal powders, wood dust, and other finely divided substances, are capable of forming explosive mixtures in air. Heavy losses of life and property have been caused by dust explosions in flour and feed mills, starch factories, and grain elevators, and it will be well to consider the possibilities that such losses may occur in any new industry and to provide all possible safeguards against hazards. Fortunately, we have learned something about the behavior of dust explosions and know something about the ease of ignition, limits of Explosive concentration, end pressure developed. Our efforts should now be directed toward the application of this knowledge in the development of safe operating practices.

The Bureau of Mines studied two Pennsylvania anthracites using low-temperature carbon dioxide adsorption. A modified form of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller equation was used to calculate specific surface areas. Two mesh sizes of each anthracite were used to determine how gamma irradiation at 106 and 108 rads, both in vacuum and in the presence of air, affected the carbon dioxide surface areas. Results show that anthracites have a system of pores that are essentially all interconnected rather than isolated; that anthracites differ from one another in specific surface, which may correlate with density; and that irradiation in vacuum has no discernible effect on specific surface of anthracite, but irradiation in air does produce changes in specific surface.

It is the firm belief of the Bureau's engineers that the introduction of electrical mining machines has done much to increase safety in mining as a whole . There can be no doubt but that the substitution of machine mining together with permissible powder for the method of " shooting from the solid " has been the means of saving the lives of many shot- firers . Machine mining also leaves the roof in a better condition as lighter charges of powder are required to bring down the coal . Thus the danger from falls of roof are lessened . It is recognized that every effort should be made to prevent all accidents due to the use of electrical machinery but it is felt that any action tending to limit the use of such machinery would be a backward rather than a forward step in the safety measures laid out to decrease the hazards in coal mining .

"INTRODUCTION During the years 1941 to 1945, the United States produced less than one-half of one percent of all primary nickel, whereas the nation's consumption of the metal amounted to nearly three-fourths of the world's supply. Although postwar nickel consumption probably will be less than wartime consumption, trade- estimates for the next 10 years are well above the average established during the 1930-1940 decade. The greatest consumption is expected in nickel alloys, particularly nickel-alloy steels. 3/ The greater use of nickel cast irons and nickel-clad metals also signifies an expanding nickel market. In anticipation of the postwar demand for nickel, and realizing the seriousness of the ""have not"" position of the United States with respect to this metal, the Bureau of Mines, sent an engineer 4/ into the lower Copper River region of Alaska during the summer of 1944 to investigate the nickel deposits near the head of Canyon Creek. Samples from the Spirit Mountain nickel prospect were sufficiently encouraging to justify more intensive exploration. As a result, a program of surface trenching, systematic sampling, and detailed mapping of the property was adopted and directed by a Bureau of Mines engineer 5/ in the summer of 1945."

In the summer of 1950, Bureau of Mines engineers visited a number of coal-preparation plants in western Europe and Great Britain to obtain information on European and British coal-cleaning and froth-flotation practices. In view of the growing importance of froth flotation as a process for cleaning fine sizes of coal, it was felt that such data and information would be of value in this country, for, although froth flotation has been adopted for use in a few of our plants, it has not as yet been employed as extensively as in British and European preparation plants. Many of the important coal beds in western Europe, especially in the Ruhr Valley of Germany and in the Dutch coal-mining region of Limburg, Netherlands, are very friable, with the result that the run-of-mine product contains a large proportion of the sizes too fine to be treated successfully by any other method than froth flotation. Furthermore, the relatively high cost of producing coal from these beds has for many years made it economically feasible and desirable to treat the fines by froth flotation, especially in the coking-coal fields.

"As stated earlier the primary goal of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. While initial work was directed to coal dust the charge to the dust center has been expanded to include diesel particulates and asbestosis, the latter of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace.A major facet of Dust Center research has been the analysis and documentation of comprehensive research protocol and procedures that are appropriate state-of-the-art in the various areas of respirable dust. In addition to definition of standardized research protocols and procedures which would be utilized by center personnel for uniformity and reproducability there is a considerable need for utilizing standardized respirable dusts in experiments with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. This respirable dust needs to be available in large quantities for a wide variety of research uses that include animal and medical experiments. The dust must be free of the lubricating oils and grinding wheel contaminants that are frequently encountered in laboratory generated dusts.The holistic approach to establishing standardized protocols and procedures applicable to the five major research areas of the center is presented in Figure 5.In one hypothesis, range in coal volatility is considered to be a major causal factor in the incidence and severity of pneumoconiosis. Therefore a suite of characterized standard respirable dust samples have been prepared for researchers from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz, limestone (rockdust) and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared.A suite of medical investigations have been developed utilizing small and medium size animals as well as non-human primates in a variety of dust/lung interaction projects which will be discussed in the next section. A number of respirable dust sampling and dust generation methods have been investigated and selected techniques utilized for both in-mine and in-laboratory research investigations. These will also be discussed in more detail later. A wide range of respirable dust size, chemical and mineralogical analyses have been investigated, standardized and documented for use in various research investigations.This interaction and documentation of various respirable dust sample procedures, animal and medical tests, sampling and dust generation methods, plus size, chemical and minerological analysis applied in the five major areas of research investigation have served to create a very favorable synergism and rapid technology transfer in the respirable dust center."

That a close analogy exists between the flow of air in mines and the flow of current in electrical networks- has been known for a long time. The laws that have been used to solve series and parallel electrical circuits have been used to solve for the equivalent resistance in mine ventilation problems. Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws have also been adopted in solving mine ventilation network problems. It will be best to define a few terms here regarding networks, and with reference to Figure 1, these definitions can be elucidated. Figure 1 can be represented by the network in Figure 2 without losing any essential details. 1. A junction is a point where two or more airways meet. 2. The segment of a roadway connecting any two junctions is known as a branch. 3. A mesh is a closed path through the network. In the above network, B, C, D and F are the junctions, CF and CD are two of the branches and CFDC is a mesh. Kirchhoff's current law states that the sum of currents entering a junction. Applying this law to the junctions in the ventilation network, one obtains for junctions C and F, the following relationships: JUNCTION C: Q1 = Q4 + Q3 (1) JUNCTION F: Q2 + Q3 = Q5 (2) Similar relationships can be drawn for other junctions. Fusion of an 86-percent euxenite concentrate with ammonium sulfate was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Reaction for 4 hours at 400° C results in conversion of both the rare-earth elements and the titanium-columbium components to water-soluble compounds. Similar results are obtained with ammonium bisulfate. Stirring the fusion mass decreases the reaction time substantially. Alternatively, treating the fusion product with a 3-hour, 650° C calcining step renders the non-rare-earth constituents insoluble, thereby allowing selective leaching of a pure rare-earth fraction with an overall yield of 97 percent.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 334-acre Mountain Lakes Wilderness Study Area (OR-011-001) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Klamath County about 15 miles northwest of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and is adjacent to the Mountain Lakes Wilderness. The area is underlain by Pliocene-age basaltic andesite. No mining districts are in the study area nor were any claims recorded or found. There are no oil and gas lease applications. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Mountain Lakes WSA (Wilderness Study Area), at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at reasonable cost.

Coal is a soft and brittle material. Drilling rates in the Pittsburgh coalbed using a drag bit exceed 3 ft/min at 2,500-pound thrust. However, maintaining the bit on a horizontal trajectory or parallel to bedding planes to attain lengths of 1,000 feet is difficult. This Bureau of Mines report presents a drill string configuration that can be guided through the coalbed. The angle of the borehole is measured periodically and by proper combinations of bit thrust and rotational speed (r/min), bit trajectory can be lifted or dropped to keep the bit in the coalbed. An example of a hole drilled to 2,126 feet is presented to show levels of thrust and rotational speed used to lift or drop the bit, the seemingly unexplainable events that occur, and the strategy used during drilling. Thrust levels during drilling range from 600 to 2,500 pounds. Hydraulic motors powered by a 30-hp, 440-volt motor provide ample power for drilling horizontal holes 2,000 feet long.

Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. On a continuous miner coal face methane concentrations are affected by the quantity of fresh intake air reaching the face. When mining the box cut on a 12.2-m (40-ft) two-pass extended cut face, the continuous miner is always at the point of deepest penetration, and operation of the machine-mounted dust scrubber and water spray system improve the flow of fresh air to the end of the box cut. However, when the continuous miner leaves the box cut to begin cutting the 40-ft slab, little is known about how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a full-scale study to answer this question. Tests were run to determine how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut with the continuous miner at three locations in the 40-fttwo-pass extended cut mining sequence; at the end of the 40-ft box cut, at the start of the 40-ft slab cut, and 6.1 m (20 ft) into the slab cut. During these tests, methane gas was uniformly released at the end of the 40-ft box cut. Methane concentrations measured0.3 m (1 ft) from the roof and face of the box cut were used to estimate face airflow quantities. Fresh air flow rates of 1.89and 4.72 m/sec (4,000 and 10.000 cfm), scrubber flow rates of 0, 4,000 and 10,000 cfm, water spray pressures of 0 and3827 kPa (0 and 120 psi), and a blowing curtain setback position of 15.2m (50 ft) were used during these tests. To improve ventilation to the end of the 40-ft box cut when the continuous miner was starting the 40-ft slab cut and 20 ft into the slab cut, the blowing curtain was advanced from its 50-ft setback to locations 40-ft and then 8.5 m (28 ft) from the face. Provide an inexpensive, remote actuated, stench-gas system which reduces fire warning time to underground work locations. Approach A mine's pager phone hard-wire network is used to release stench gas from pressurized canisters located near working areas. The release is initiated by placing a coded message into a control phone at some central location. How It Works Currently, in most mines, the decision to release a warning stench gas is made by mine management after communication from the mine of a fire or similar potentially dangerous situation. Stench gas is then released into the ventilation air and/or compressed air lines for dissemination throughout the mine. This can result in significant delays in warning time. Often, surface personnel must travel to distant shafts, or other release points, wasting valuable time. Also, the time for ventilation air to circulate from the surface to working locations can be long and the effectiveness of compressed air as a stench transport agent depends on whether the compressed air is being used at the face. The Bureau of Mines, through a contract with MSA Research Corporation, has designed and tested a warning system which avoids these problems. The system consists of multiple, pressurized stench-gas canisters located under-ground in the mine-ventilation network so as to provide quick dissemination of the released stench gas to working areas. Each stench-gas canister is hard-wire connected to a nearby pager phone and from there to a control phone at the surface or at a central in-mine site. In the event of a mine emergency, the canisters are activitated to release stench gas by placing a coded message into the control phone. A low amperage Signal sent from the control phone to the receiver phone closes a relay, which activates a release mechanism on the canister.

"Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. "In a previous report of the Bureau of Mines (Serial No. 2080 reference was made to a fatal accident from falling rock in a quarry in Utah, and ways of avoiding such accidents were pointed out. A fatal accident similar to it in some respects recently occurred in a limestone quarry in Maryland. All operators of stone quarries are desirous of reducing accidents to a minimum, and almost without exception they welcome any suggestions having in view the establishment of safer quarry practice. It is believed, therefore, that a brief outline of the cir-cumstances surrounding this later accident may be of practical advantage to quarry-men, as it may serve as a guide to them in so conducting operations that such unfortunate occurrences may be reduced in number.The quarry where the accident occurred is in form a circular pit 500 to 600 feet across an 80 to 100 feet deep. The rock is a dense limestone with the beds dipping at an angle of 35 to 45 degrees from the horizontal. Numerous erosion cavities in the form of pockets or narrow spaces following joint planes are filled with red sand and clay. They are confined largely to the upper 20 or 30 feet of the deposit. Open bedding planes are 4 to 10 feet apart toward the surface, and are spaced at wider intervals toward the base of the quarry. The open bedding planes present smooth uniform rock surfaces that dip steeply into the pit at the northeast side of the quarry opening. These smooth surfaces constitute a source of danger, as they may permit loose material to slide into the pit.In this particular instance a blast had been discharged, throwing down a mass of rock for steam-shovel loading. Three men wore employed thereafter for a period of about two days in cleaning down all loose material that might be dangerous to workmen luring the loading process. A mass of red sand and clay in which several large bowlders were embedded was left on one of these slanting surfaces, for the material seemed to be sufficiently secure to be quite safe. The lower edge of the slanting surface was about 25 feet above the quarry floor. The quarry conditions are illustrated in fig. 1, where (a) represents the quarry floor, (b) the vertical quarry (c) the slanting joint plane surface, and (d) the rock and earth resting on the surface."
