"The evolution during oxidation of the internal structure of soot and carbon black particles was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and an image analysis system. Increasing ordering to the carbon structure with increasing oxidation is observed. Measures of the increased order are increases in the fractional coverage of a cross section of the particles with a layered structure, a decrease in the mean interlayer spacing, and a decrease in the spread of the interlayer spacing. The changing structure of the carbon black impacts its properties, such as the rate of oxidation.There is considerable interest in the study of the structural changes of carbonaceous materials as a function of oxidation. Davis et al.1 measured the variation of carbon dioxide surface area of various coals as a function of residence time in a flow reactor. HRTEM measurements revealed that crystallite dimensions and interlayer spacings are altered by combustion. Ishiguro et al.2 showed that oxidation alters the structure of diesel soot. The aim of our current research is to develop a better understanding of the microstructural reordering of carbon blacks with implications to their properties. The carbon blacks used in this research have already been studied and their reactivities as a function of oxidation measured.3The methodology used in this work has already been described in detail elsewhere.4 This paper presents an application to quantify the structural changes of carbon black particles as a function of oxidation and graphitization. The technique used is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, chars, etc., possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure. The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic5 or as crumpled sheets6 to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of electron micros¬copy in studying the morphology of such materials has been well established,2,7,8 although only a few attempts toward quantification have been made.The sample observed was carbon black CB330 from De¬gussa. One set of carbon black samples were oxidized in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in air at 575 0C, so that the conversion varied from 0 to 96%. Another set of carbon black samples were graphitized (Graphpac-GB by ALLTECH) and then oxidized in the TGA at 680 °C until 92% burnout was reached. The latter samples are called GB 0% and GB 92%, respectively.For the HRTEM observation a small portion of each sample was ultrasonically dispersed in ethanol. The suspension was deposited dropwise on a copper TEM grid coated with a lacey carbon film. The examination of the samples was carried out on areas that extend over the holes in the supporting film in order to avoid interference from the amorphous carbon background film An oriented gold crystal was used as a calibration standard and subjected to the same techniques as the carbon black samples."

There is evidence to suggest that cell injury induced in alveolar macrophages (AM) following phagocytic activation by silica particles may be mediated through changes in intracellular free calcium [Ca 2+}. However, the mechanism of silicainduced cytotoxicity relative to [Ca2+], overloading is not yet clear. To provide a better insight into this mechanism, isolated rat AMs were exposed to varying concentrations of crystalline silica (particle size< 5 µm in diameter) and the fluctuation in their [Ca2+]; and cell integrity were quantitatively monitored with the fluorescent calcium probe, Fura-2 AM, and the membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide (Pl). Results from this study indicate that silica can rapidly increase [Ca2+]; in a dose-dependent manner with a characteristic transient calcium rise at low doses (<0.1 mg/ml) and an elevated and sustained rise at high doses (>0.1 mg/ml). Depletion of extracellular calcium [Ca 2+]0 markedly inhibited the [Ca2+]; rise (˜90%), suggesting that Ca2+ influx from extracellular source is a major mechanism for silica-induced [Ca2+]; rise. When used at low doses but sufficient to cause a transient [Ca2+]; rise, silica did not cause significant increase in cellular Pl uptake during the time of study, suggesting the presevation of membrane integrity of AMs under these conditions. At high doses of silica, however, a marked increase in Pl nuclear fluorescence was observed. Depletion of [Ca 2+] 0 greatly inhibited cellular Pl uptake, induced by 0. 1 mg/ml or higher doses of silica. This suggests that Ca 2 + influx, as a result of silica activation, is associated with cell injury. Indeed, our results further demonstrated that the low dose effect of silica on Ca 2+ influx is inhibited by the Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine. At high doses of silica (>0.1 mg/ml), cell injury was not prevented by nifedipine or extracellular Ca2+ depletion, suggesting that other cytotoxic mechanisms, i.e., nonspecific membrane damage due to lipid peroxidation, are also responsible for the silica-induced cell injury. Silica had no significant effect on cellular ATP content during the time course of the study, indicating that the observed silicainduced (Ca2 ... ); rise was not due to the impairment of Ca2 + -ATPase pumps, which restricts Ca2+ efflux. Pretreatment of the cells with cytochalasin B to block phagocytosis failed to prevent the effect of silica on [Ca2+]; rise. Taken together, these results suggest that the elevation of [Ca2+]; caused by silica is due mainly to Ca2+ influx through plasma membrane Ca2+,channels and nonspecific membrane damage (at high doses). Neither ATP depletion nor Ca2+ leakage during phagocytosis was attributed to the silica-induced [Ca2+]; rise.

The experimental work on the utilization of tin-plate scrap at the North- west experiment station of the U. S. Pireau of Mines in cooperation with College of Mines, University of Washington, necessitated the selection of a simple method for the determination of tin in the iron produced. Some of the standard methods for the determination of tin which were tried are given below: 1. Dissolving in acids and precipitating the tin as sulphide, igniting and weighing as Sn02. 2. Dissolving in aciis, reducing with nickel, cooling in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, end titrating with standari iodine solution. 3. Dissolving in acids, precipitating the tin as sulphide, dissolving this sulphide in H3 and H2S04, heating until fumes of 503 are evolved, reducing with nickel or sheet lead, cooling in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, ani titrating with a standard iodine solution.

The use of shall electrically- driven fans , in conjunction with air- pipe of various diameters is becoming of increasing importance for the ventilation of working places in metal mines through which the general ventilating currents can not be coursed . It will probably continue to increase in importance since the concept that air motion is the most important factor in maintaining comfort in hot ( above 80° F . ) working places is more generally accepted , and as the inefficiency and greater expense of attempting to ventilate such places with compressed air is recognized . Managers of large properties can afford to experiment with fan- pipe installations until types are found that meet their conditions , but managers of shall properties , unless forced to it by extreme conditions , prefer to wait until they can obtain data sufficient to guarantee at least a measure of success from such installations . At present , such data , even in part , are available to only a few (mainly fan manufacturer's representatives , consulting ventilation engineers , and ventilatin engineers employed by large companies ) , and important recent developments are mostly of a confidential nature . One large metal - mining company cooperated with a fan manufacturer in some extensive experimental work on small blowers and found that instead of using stock fans , considerable power economy could be effected and equal quantities of air delivered by use of or 2/3 width fans with small motors rather than using stock fans and larger motors ; it was also found advisable to adopt certain sizes of tubing for certain lengths of run . In fact , many important facts were ascertained in this study , and it is now promised that they will soon be given to the public . It is true that a certain amount of data on industrial installations are available , but such data are only in part applicable to metal -mine conditions , because , until recently , little attention has been given to ventilation in metalmines , and the conditions encountered usually require a greater length of pipe , a more temporary type of construction , and closer attention to temperature control than the ordinary run of industrial installations demands ..

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. The Bureau of Mines investigated palygorskite, a natural asbestiform material, to accumulate knowledge that might serve as a foundation for future synthesis of a similar material. Unit cell, chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, optical constants, and electron microscopy data were obtained. Selected palygorskite samples of bettor than 97-percent purity were used to obtain this information. Chemical analysis revealed the following formula: (OH2)4 (OH)2 Ca0.01Fe0.02K0 .c3Mg2.10A12.00Si7.93020.3.91 H2O. The optical constants for sodium light are a = 1.522; S = 1.530; ?=1.533; biaxially (-). The following orthorhomibic unit cell constants were determined: ao = 12.690 A, Z = 2, bo = 17.857 A, Dx = 2.327. co = 5.207 A, Identical diffraction patterns resulted from the three palygorskite samples that were studied. X-ray, chemical, DTA, TGA, and optical data were compared with literature values for similar fibrous materials. X-ray diffraction lines were indexed. Several electron micrographs were made to compare the structures of palygorskite and attapulgite with that of chrysotile. The micrographs revealed extremely short laths for attapulgite, very long flexible laths for palygorskite, and tubular structure for chrysotile.

The Bureau of Mines studied the standard free energies2 of formation of ferrous fluoride (FeF2) and ferric fluoride (FeF3) with high-temperature galvanic cells employing calcium fluoride doped with 1 mole-pet yttrium fluoride as the electrolyte. A free-energy change for the cell reaction Fe (s) + NiF2 (S) = FeF2 (S) + Ni (s) together with the standard free energy of formation of nickel fluoride yields a standard free energy of formation of ferrous fluoride from the elements of ?GF° = -168.74 + 30.63 x 10-3T ± 0.41 kcal/mole (897-1,098 K). (2) Combining the standard free energies of formation of magnesium fluoride, ferric oxide, and magnesium oxide with the free-energy change for the overall cell reaction 3MgO(s) + 2FeF3 (s) = 3MgF2 (S) + Fe2 03 (S) (3) gives a standard free energy of formation of ferric fluoride from the elements as ?Gf° = -281.45 + 90.46 X 10-3T ± 0,67 kcal/mole (880-935 K). (4) Free energies and equilibrium fluorine pressures for the two univariant equilibria of the Fe-F system are tabulated and illustrated.

In an effort to maintain an adequate supply of iron to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on methods for beneficiating the oxidized taconite resources located on the western Mesabi range in Minnesota, thus expanding domestic iron ore reserves. The selective flocculation and cationic flotation process was investigated in a pilot plant using an ore feed rate of 410 kg/hr (900 1b/hr) and 88 percent recycled water. Lime and a cationic flocculant were used to clarify the waste slurries treated in the water reclamation circuit. An oxidized taconite assaying approximately 36 percent Fe yielded concentrates averaging 63.5 percent Fe and 4.3 percent SiO2 and having an average iron recovery of 84.4 percent. The estimated reagent cost per tonne of concentrate was approximately $1.10. In an attempt to recover more of the iron lost in the flotation tailing, wet high-intensity magnetic (WHIM) separation was incorporated in the pilot plant circuit. The flotation concentrate grades obtained from beneficiation circuits with and without WHIM scavenging were similar, but when WHIM separation was used the overall iron recovery was increased by 2 to 9.5 percent, depending on the iron assay of the flotation tailing.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers measured threshold igniting powers as a function of beam diameter for butane and propane-air mixtures by laser-heating targets placed on optical fiber tips using a 1064 nm laser. The minimum igniting powers for propane-air and butane-air were about 250 and 300 mW, respectively. Threshold igniting powers for propane-air were approximately proportional to beam diameter for beam diameters from 0.1 to 2.0 mm. Results suggest that relatively powerful beams may be used in these atmospheres without causing ignition, provided the beam diameter is controlled. Threshold ignition delay times using 91125 and 62.51 125 pm fibers were approximately proportional to the inverse square of the laser power. Ignition delays were about 45 ms or longer for laser powers up to 800 mW. Preproduction samples of a commercial optical fuse prevented ignitions under selected test conditions. A self-healing effect was observed for one sample. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. O 2006 Laser Institute of America. The mineral industry in Burundi continued to be a minor contributor to the 1980 gross domestic product (GDP) estimated at $293 million in constant 1970 prices.2 Mineral export revenues, primarily from cassiterite, increased by a factor of 15 between 1979-80, reaching approximately $434,000 by yearend 1980. Gold, bastnasite, colombite-tantalite, and wolfremite continued to be exploited on a small scale, using manual and semimechanical methods. Despite a sharp decline in mining activities during 1979, attributed to a lack o? profitability and shortage of construction materials, the mining sector exhibited signs of recovery during 1980. The mineral exploration budget grew 32% over 1979 levels and was equivalent to approximately $42,000 in 1980. In addition, the Burundi Geographical Institute (IGE BU) was created in September 1980 and given responsibilities to collect cartographic, topographic, hydrogeologic, and other geomorphological data., SONIBUROM, the Burundian and Romanian Government joint mineral corporation, conducted mineral deposit inventories during 1979-80 and has been charged with exploiting some of these as yet unspecified resource areas. Another Burundian-Romanian effort, called Mabaya-Butahana, was initiated to search for gold deposits. Meanwhile on the Ruzizi plain, alluvial gold prospecting, with an estimated grade between 0.2 to 1.0 gram per ton, was carried out on a small scale.

Underground mines rely on alarm systems, such as stench gas, audible or visual alarms, pager phones, telephones, and messengers to warn miners of a fire or other emergency. These systems are often slow, unreliable, and limited in mine coverage. This report describes the evaluation of a wireless signaling and warning system for underground mines. This system is applicable to both coal and noncoal mines. The work was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in cooperation with TeleMagnetic Signalling Systems (TSS) under Cooperative3Research and Development Agreement No. BOM-CRDA-6200-0119. A TSS wireless ultra-low-frequency electromagnetic signaling system was installed at the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. A commercial smoke sensor was interfaced to a remote portable transmitter, and the alarm of the sensor was used to trigger the central evacuation and paging transmitter system during experimental mine fires. The underground/surface receivers flashed cap lamps and activated remote devices, such as strobe lights, within 30 to 40 s after the encoded signal was received. Evaluation results showed full-mine coverage of the electromagnetic field and that the encoded signal was received at the farthest point underground and on the surface perimeter.

The roof bolt system of a mine, if properly selected and installed, can allow for better roof control and reduce the potential for roof falls. Because of this potential to reduce roof falls and improve ground control conditions, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has an interest in the types of roof bolts that are used by the coal industry. Further, NIOSH has conducted research into how various support parameters can affect the number of roof falls that occur, including support type. Today, the five main types of roof bolts installed in U.S. coal mines are mechanical anchor bolts, point-anchor or resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, torque-tension bolts, combination bolts, and fully grouted resin rebar. This paper describes each support in detail. Because of the importance of resin in the functioning of the majority of bolts installed, resin grouts are also discussed. Further, trends in the types of roof bolts used are reviewed. Over the last 10 years, the significant trend has been the large reduction in the relative number of mechanical anchor bolts that are installed. These bolts have been replaced mainly by the resin-grouted rebar system. Data are also presented to show the impact of these changes in bolting on the number of roof falls.

Remotely monitor overburden response to longwall mining using time domain reflectometry (TDR) and a combination of hardware and software, as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) program to characterize subsidence. Background TDR was developed in the 1960&apos;s as a method to locate, discontinuities in coaxial transmission cables. In this method, voltage pulses sent along a cable are reflected by cable defects. The pulse reflections are used to determine the type and magnitude of the defects. The TDR concept was extended to material property measurement by embedding cables into particular materials and evaluating the cable&apos;s dielectric behavior as material properties were modified. This technique was adapted by the USBM in 1978 for use in monitoring rock movement during underground mining. The same concept is utilized today. A coaxial cable is grouted into a rock mass that is expected to deform. Progressive rock movement causes the cable to deform, as shown in figure 1, and changes to occur in the cable&apos;s electrical properties, which then produce changes in TDR reflection signatures. The technology has advanced to the point where it is now possible to distinguish shear deformation from tensile deformation and to quantify rock mass displacements by analyzing the TDR signatures.

This Part is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a corner. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency which propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center&apos;s investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

This Bureau of Mines study covers 25 underground mines that were active in the Upper and Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coalbeds in 1976. The coal ranges from low to medium volatile in rank; its primary use is for steam generation. Seven mines emit more than 100,000 cfd of methane gas; those mines are the deepest and largest producers. The methane gas content of three core samples of the Lower Kittanning coalbed was estimated by the direct method. A sample from a depth of 320 feet contained 0.5 cu cm of gas per gram, at 620 feet there was 0.8 cu cm of gas per gram, and at 1,060 feet there was 11 cu cm of gas per gram. These results suggest that methane control problems will be encountered in the future as deeper coal is mined.

"The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."

The first phase of our work for PMSRC on this contract was devoted to a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of electromagnetic (EM) noise measurements and data taken by several contractors for use in the design of operational and emergency mine communications. Pertinent measurements and data of other selected investigators were also included in the evaluation. This assessment treated the measurements and instrumentation used, the data analysis and presentation methods, and the utility of the final results. This phase concluded with the identification of the most useful results and methods, the remaining data gaps, the contractor most qualified to fill these data gaps, and the definition (with PMSRC and this contractor - NBS, National Bureau of Standards) of a follow-on noise measurement program, instrumentation system, and data processing methods tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. A partial bibliography of references related to electromagnetic and seismic noise and propagation in the frequency bands of interest was also compiled during this first phase. The body of this Part of the final report presents a summary of the findings of our EM noise assessment, together with detailed recommendations regarding the new noise measurements to be taken and the instrumentation and data processing methods to be used. This work was done during the latter part of 1971 and the early part of 1972. During subsequent phases of the contract ADL was asked to perform on-going evaluations of the continuing program of electromagnetic (EM) noise and propagation measurements made by Bureau contractors, and to utilize pertinent data from these measurements to make performance estimates for

Such an organization is the Rocky Mountain Petroleum Association, Denver, Colo, As our production of petroleum can no longer keep with the consumption, the plan of organization, character of work, and results obtained by this association are well worth considering. It is hoped that the results achieved in the Wyoming fields will serve to stimulate similar organizations among operators in the state or other oil fields of the United States, The Rocky Mountain Petroleum Association, Danvers Colo., was formed in May, 1919. It comprises the Midwest Refining Co,. The Ohio Oil Co., and the Continental Oil Co. These three companies entered into a cooperative agree¬ment with the Federal Bureau of Mines whereby $30,000 would be spent under the direction of the bureau, which agreed to furnish competent men, and to furnish the work and expenditure of funds. Although the financial burden for the first year's work, now drawing o a close, was carried by only three companies, they stipulated their desire that the benefit of the work should accrue to the industry, and that the personnel employed should be as zealous to assist one operator as another, without regard to whether ha was contributing to the support of the work or not."
