The Douglas fluorite property is in the Empire district of eastern Pope County, Ill., which lies near the west boundary of the productive Southern Illinois fluorspar field in Hardin and Pope Countios. Production from mines on the Douglas property accounts for about one-half of the 72,000 tons of fluorspar with which the Empire district is credited. This output was from the Sycamore, Pierce, Slapout, and Empire veins, which are normal fissure veins of little displacement along which there has been local wall-rock replacement by fluorite.

"INTRODUCTION The use of gasoline engines as the motive power for lift trucks, tractors, and other types of mobile equipment operated in enclosed spaces, such as industrial plants and warehouses, may create a hazard because of the carbon monoxide present in the exhaust gases of the engines; gasoline-powered equipment should not be used in mines or tunnels. Because the equipment is mobile, local ventilation usually is impracticable, and general ventilation of the spaces is nec-essary to dilute and remove the carbon monoxide. To estimate the rate of ventilation required in such situations, information is necessary on the concentration of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas and the rate at which exhaust gas is produced under given operating conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present data that may be used in making estimates of ventilation requirements.COMPOSITION OF GASOLINE-ENGINE EXHAUST GASThe exhaust gas of a gasoline engine consists mainly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, oxygen, and unburned hydrocarbons (usually reported as methane), together with the nitrogen present as a residue from the air sup-plied for combustion. 3/ The exhaust also contains water vapor resulting from combustion of the hydrogen of the fuel. The water-vapor content is not included in exhaust-gas analyses calculated on a ""dry"" basis and is not involved in the estimation of ventilation requirements."

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the surface charge of amphibole asbestos fibers and nonasbestiform cleavage fragments, as part of the Bureau's fundamental studies to provide new knowledge on the physical and chemical properties of the amphibole minerals. Microelectrophoresis was used to measure the electrophoretic mobilities, in water, of particles from six asbesti-from amphiboles and seven nonasbestiform amphiboles over the pH range of 5 through 9. The particles generally ranged in size from 2 to 5 µm wide by 10 to 30 µm long. The isoelectric point was determined for four of the minerals, and values were found to be between pH 3.5 and pH 5. The minerals studied had zeta potentials that generally ranged from -25 to -so mv in neutral solution. Attachment of colloidal positively charged AgI was also studied as a means of determining surface charge. Scanning electron microscopy of amphibole particles that had been in contact with aqueous AgI showed equal attachment of AgI to asbestos fibers and to cleavage fragments; the extent of AgI coating was the same for both. The electrophoretic mobilities of asbestos fibers were essentially the same as those of elongated cleavage fragments of the same aspect ratio (particle length divided by width). Blocky particles from both asbestiform and nonasbestiform specimens had lower mobilities.

"Bit wear presents problems to mining operations because it affects both productivity and economics. Most bit research deals with energy requirements and energy dissipation mechanics for ideal fragmentation during the cutting process.Mechanical cutting leads to dust generation. Past studies involving dust generation due to bit wear concluded that dust concentrations increased considerably after a 7% bit weight loss: leading researchers recommend that the bits be changed at that point.Bit wear is affected by three factors: machine operating parameters in-situ mining conditions and rock properties. Operating parameters such as the depth of cut tool material spray position and the drum's rotating velocity are very important and have a definite impact on bit wear.During the mining process the amount of rock in coal and the strength of that rock is important as abrasion and adhesion take affect. Diffusive wear or deformation becomes dominant only when the temperatures exceed critical. Temperatures rise as a function of drum velocity rock properties and the cutting tool itself.Miner bit surveyIn this study, 15 mines were surveyed, and of those six responded for nine seams. The survey reflected a wide range of information about coal production and bit consumption from continuous miner sections. Also used bits were collected to get first-hand information to analyze wear."

From the most remote periods of civilization stone has been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns), or single markers, to great obelisks and pyramids or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1650 at an estimated cost of $50,000,000 or more and is today an object of unusual interest for travelers. Other magnificent memorials both ancient and modern are to be found in many lands. No sharp line can be drawn between buildings and monuments, because the larger types of memorials such as the Bok Singing Tower, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and mausoleums of various types have features in common with buildings. However, great care must be exercised in selecting a site for a quarry that will produce acceptable monumental stone because appearance as well as quality is of prime importance. The deposit must be of uniform texture and attractive color and must be notably free of knots, hairlines, impurities, incipient seams, or other defects. Many memorials are of polished stone, and spots or streaks that might be virtually Invisible on a natural rock face will appear distinctly on a polished surface. Hence, stone to be polished must be selected with unusual care. However, less flawless stone may be used for hammered surfaces.

Yield stress and plastic viscosity values, determined from shear rate-shear stress relationships, were found to be a linear function of coal concentration for coal-water slurries containing 40, 45, 50, and 55 weight-percent of powdered coal. In the laminar region, the flow is described by an equation derived from the fact that the square root of the shear stress varied linearily with the square root of the shear rate. In the turbulent region, the friction factor was found to be inversely proportional to the velocity to the 0.12 power.

APPENDIX D DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF ACOUSTIC SEAL CHECKER THEORY 1. Introduction In Section 7 of the report the acoustic seal checker concept was described in a general manner and the parameters which affect the signal level at the microphone were discussed briefly. In this appendix the theoretical basis will be presented and the experimental program described which permitted the extension of the theory into practice. The basic goal of the acoustic seal checker is to relate the reduction in sound pressure level to the size of the residual hole in the fly ash barrier. The smallest hole size that may be measured is determined by the signal to noise ratio, where the noise in this case includes the ambient noise in the mine, the internal microphone noise and the sound transmitted from the acoustic source via the flanking paths through corridors adjacent to the one being sealed. The latter source of noise can be discriminated against, at the expense of increased complexity of the acoustic system, by employing a pulsed source and pulse gating of the microphone signal set to accept sound via the barrier path and to reject the delayed flanking path signals. In order that the acoustic system be insensitive to precise source and microphone location and to permit assessment of system performance on an acoustic power flow basis, a broad frequency band of pseudo-random noise is emitted by the loudspeaker source. A high-speed streak camera method for making equation of state measurements (shock and particle velocities) on samples of rock under dynamic load conditions is described. Experimental data are given for tests on 12 samples representing 5 rock types. Analysis of these data shows that the method is practical and that good reproducibility of results can be obtained. The pressure range covered in the tests was from 1 to 50 kilobars.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a glass containing approximately 17 percent lithia and 83 percent silica to establish a method of devitrifying cast and rolled shapes. Glass shapes with high strength were made by melting, forming, and rapid cooling of the composition, and the shapes subsequently were converted to a crystalline condition by heat treatment. The best devitrification schedule included rapid cooling of the glass to below 300° C, followed by reheating at a rate of 50° to 400° C per hour, depending on the size of the shape, followed by a of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C and another period of 15 hours at 800° C. attempts to use faster heating rates or slow cooling to accomplish devitrification in deformation of the shapes. The crystalline shapes had flexural strengths that averaged over 33,000 psi, achieved with an annealing time of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C.

As a part of the program of the Rare and. Precious Metals Experiment Station, Reno, Nev., in connection with investigations of treatment methods for precious and precious-base metal ores, to further conservation and recovery of precious and base metals, tests Were made on samples from the Buzzard Mine, located in the vicinity of Placerville, Calif. These samples represented ore exposed during previous development work, in tunnels and a shaft on the property, including highly oxidized material from the surface zone and sulfide ores from depths of 150 to 300 feet. The surface samples contained little base metal and only enough gold 80 that economic exploitation of them would depend on development of a large tonnage of ore, low-cost mining methods, and satisfactory treatment methods. The sulfide samples were valuable enough to warrant further exploration and development and, if present in suitable tonnage, the installation of a treatment plant for recovery of both precious and base metals. The oxidized surface-zone samples carried 0.11 to 0.14 ounce gold per ton. Standard amalgamation and flotation tests of these samples gave low recoveries. Standard cyanidation tests indicated high consumption of lime and cyanide and gold extraction of 79.4 and 82.7 percent. Water-leaching the ore after crushing to minus 10-mesh improved cyanidation considerably. Ex-tractions of 82.7 to 85.8 percent were obtainec1 with lime consumption of 6 to 7 pounds per ton of ore and cyanide consumptions of 1 to 4 pounds. Grinding the samples to minus 200-mesh followed by water-leaching and cyanidation gave improved extractions of 91-92 percent of the gold, but with slightly increased consumptions of lime and cyanide.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the absorption of radium and thorium from waste uranium leach liquor by clays and other materials. This work was conducted in support of the Bureau&apos;s goal of minimizing the environmental conflicts, impacts, and occupational hazards associated with mining and milling operations. Tailing and soil samples from New Mexico were evaluated for their potential to absorb radium and thorium from tailing liquors. Absorption ranged from 0 to 97 pct for radium and 0 to 60 pct for thorium. Some samples that readily absorbed radium were contacted with various salt solutions that could be present in tailing solutions to determine whether desorption would be a potential problem. The desorption of radium ranged from 0 to 75 pct. An alpha spectrometric method was used to determine the radium and thorium concentrations in the solutions and solids.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the integrity of the existing shutoff valves and actuators used under high-temperature conditions in the Bureau of Mines&apos; horizontal borehole methane drainage pipe- line system and to determine the potential for improvement in the system. In the field tests, both fire-safe ball valves and standard brass ball valves were initially subjected to a 30-min pan fire without thermal protection. Neither valve could maintain line pressure beyond 11 min in a fire that reached temperatures between 500° and 700° C. Based on the test results, it was concluded that the brass ball valve used in the Bureau&apos;s methane drainage pipeline system can be retrofitted with an inexpensive "fire bag" to substantially increase its integrity under mine fire conditions.

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. The research was funded, as a continuance of previous support from USBM Grants GO133077 and G0155003, to gain further knowledge in mine electrical system safety. Five reports have been separately produced, all under the grant title, "Coal Mine Electrical System Evaluation," and are as follows: 1. Volume I - Continuous Monitoring, 2. Volume II - Transient Analysis, 3. Volume III - Shielded Cables, 4. Volume IV - Computer Modeling, and 5. Volume V - Battery and Battery-charging Safety. Abstracts of these comprise the balance of this document with one exception. The task ?d-c offsett currents," does not fall under the scope of the other report volumes and, further, the material to be presented does not justify a separate report. Hence, this subject concludes the Executive Summary.

Bench-scale studies were made on a reductive hydrometallurgical procedure to convert chalcopyrite flotation concentrate to copper metal or a readily leachable sulfide. Reductive conversion of chalcopyrite and dissolution of iron and sulfur were accomplished in hydrochloric or sulfuric acid solution by the addition of metallic copper, iron, or lead. Use of metallic copper as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 and 46 percent of the iron and sulfur, respectively. The products were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and a copper sulfide. Use of metallic iron or lead as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 percent of both the iron and sulfur. The products obtained with metallic iron or lead were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and metallic copper.

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

"The oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase showed typical enzymatic kinetics. The oxidation was inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide, a glutathione reductase inhibitor. Superoxide dismutase had no significant effect on the oxidation, indicating non-involvment of the superoxide radical. The vanadate(V) reduction was found to be a one-electron transfer process. These results suggest a new pathway for vanadate(V) metabolism and a new function of glutathione reductase. Compounds of vanadium(V), such as NaV03 , exert potent toxic effects on a wide variety of biological systems (1-3). Despite intense current activity, however, the biochemical mechanism of vanadate(V) toxicity is still not well understood (1- 14). It is believed that one of the important pathways involves the oxidation (by vanadate(V)) of NAD(P)H (15, 16), but, to our knowledge, there has been no report of the identification of any vanadate(V) reductase. With a view to finding if there exists any vanadate(V) reductase, we have investigated the oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase. Glutathione reductase (GSSG-R)2 was selected because our previous studies have shown (17) that GSSG-R can act as a reductase for chromate(VI), which is isoelectronic with vanadate(V). We find that GSSG-R does indeed function as a NADPH-dependent vanadate(V) reductase, thus pointing to a new pathway for the metabolism of vanadate(V), as well as to this property for GSSG-R. MATERIALS AND METHODSSodium metavanadate (NaV03 ), henceforth vanadate, was purchased from Aldrich and its solution was always freshly prepared. The GSSG·R used was from bovine intestinal mucosa and was purchased from Sigma. The oxidation of NADPH was followed photometrically as the decrease in absorbance at 340 nm. The spin trap, 5,5-dimethyl- pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), was purchased from Aldrich and used without further purification, since very weak or no spin adduct signal was obtained from the purchased sample when used alone.ESR spectra were obtained at X-band (9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200 ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035A) and the microwave frequency was measured with a digital frequency counter (Hewlett-Packard, Model 5340A). An ASPECT 2000 computer was used for data storage and analysis. The concentrations given in the figure legends are the final concentrations. All experiments were carried out in the phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.2) and at room temperature."

Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is conducted to simulate spontaneous heating in a large-scale coal chamber with a forced ventilation system. Spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal using kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale spontaneous heating studies. Heat generated from coal oxidation is dissipated by convection and conduction, while oxygen and oxidation products are transported by convection and diffusion. The water vapor transfer and the effect of heat of wetting are not modeled. The CFD model is validated by comparing simulation results with test results from U.S. Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the coal chamber. The model predicts lower temperatures in the early stage but agrees well on the induction time for spontaneous heating. The effects of airflow rate and order of reaction on the spontaneous heating process are also examined. The calibrated CFD model is found to be useful for predicting the induction time for spontaneous heating in underground coal mines.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.
