Kettlebottoms are columnar masses of rock--the preserved casts of ancient tree stumps--embedded in coal mine roof strata (of which they are a part). Because unsupported kettlebottoms can detach from a mine roof without warning, they are a hazard to miners. The primary objectives of this investigation were (1) to better define and describe kettlebottoms and (2) to evaluate kettlebottom support techniques in terms of safety and effectiveness. A telephone survey of mine operators, interviews with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel, and underground mine visits were conducted in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Information gathered during this investigation indicates that the size and frequency of kettlebottoms in mine roof are dependent upon past geologic events and biological processes active during the deposition of roof sediments. To ensure the safety of mine personnel, all undermined kettlebottoms should be supported. The roof should be bolted next to kettlebottoms less than 3 ft in diameter, close enough to allow a portion of a wood or steel header to be extended beneath each kettlebottom for support. Two bolts and a wood plank or steel strap should be employed to support kettlebottoms over 3 ft in diameter.

Ninety-seven roof bolts were instrumented with strain gages and resin-grouted in three areas of the Bear coal mine, Somerset, Colo., by the Bureau of Mines. Measurements taken with these instruments indicate roof support is achieved through a combination of point suspension and resistance to vertical and horizontal stresses caused by localized shearing in the roof. The localized shearing results in bending of the bolts, yielding due to high vertical stresses, and the transfer of high loads to the bolt head or plate.

The use of a partially slotted 6.5-inch-inside-diameter vertical pipe to remove methane from a longwall gob area at a depth of 2,260 feet in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed was investigated. The value of gas removed by such a pipe under free-flow conditions was found to equal the cost of the installation in this case. Approximately 25 percent of the available methane passed through the pipe without the use of an exhauster; an additional 10 percent was removed when an exhauster was employed. The diversion of methane through a vertical slotted pipe to the surface permitted the use of increased mining rates and decreased the ventilation air requirements.

From an engineering perspective an ideal industrial noise control solution focuses directly on the actual source of the poise. Eliminating the noise-generating mechanism altogether obviates the need for other noise contra l treatments or hearing protection devices. However, in cases where attenuating the source is not feasible engineering controls must be oriented toward blocking the path that the sound waves travel toward employees. Acoustical enclosures are commonly used as sound path treatments to contain the noise from a machine: alternatively a control room/booth or equipment operator's cab may be used to isolate the worker from the noise. Anyone who has successfully used acoustical enclosures knows that the design procurement, and installation process is deceptively simple. Alt too often First-time efforts fait to account for many of the constraints that can render the enclosure essentially useless. Things that cannot be overlooked include: providing convenient worker access (physical and visual): allowing for proper machine operation/product flow; and supplying fresh air or preventing undue heat or contaminate build-up inside the enclosure. All of these factors must be given careful consideration, otherwise the enclosure will not perform adequately.

Reduce the dust exposure of workers in large processing buildings at mineral processing operations, using a total mill ventilation system.

Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium over the temperature range -5° to 80° C and at pressures to 800 atmospheres. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the runs were fitted to a fourth degree polynomial equation of state in the pressure and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 was used. All data for a particular isotherm were treated simultaneously. A temperature function was found to represent the parameters B and C. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are believed to be accurate to better than 0.05 percent.

THIS CHAPTER reviews the highlights of developments in mining technology during 1956 and presents a special report on the design of mine openings in stable ground. This special report is presented each year in an endeavor to stimulate use of the scientific approach to the solution of problems related to mining technology. Assuming that the literature on mining technology reflects trends in mining, it appears that two areas of activity were given most attention in 1956. One was research on mining technology,4 and the other was improvement of transportation, particularly trackless transportation, both at surface and underground mines.

Demand for arsenic trioxide dropped markedly during 1983, primarily as a result of a 27% reduction in cotton planting. As an oversupply of arsenic trioxide developed, prices declined for both domestic and imported material. Domestic Data Coverage.-Commercial-grade arsenic trioxide and arsenic metal were produced by only one U.S. company, which voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines. "IntroductionThe accumulation of gummy and resinous deposits in consumers' gas meters began to assume serious proportions about 1917. As the trouble developed and spread in the years following, it manifested itself in several ways, which ultimately began to the expressible in distinctly economic terms, more specifically in terms of costs; in 1922 an organized and fundamentally based investigation of this trouble was begun. In an earlier paper*** a short statement of the occurrence and costs of the deposition was given and at the same time an analysis of the problem, as well as well as a general plan of attack, was presented. That plan included two general phases, first, a chemical study of typical was 1 quarry or 2 cosinous content , mauformly consituents, rmln and selected subjects; and secondly, a comparative survey of plants affected and sufficient therewith, attention being paid to construction, operation, meter conditions and related data. The Bureau of Mines tested 48 materials for their ability to absorb H2S from hot simulated producer gas (1,000°-1,500° F). The material found best from the standpoint of absorption capacity, durability, and amenability to regeneration was sintered pellets of 75 percent fly ash-25 percent Fe203. The performance of this absorbent under simulated and actual conditions is described. The effect of absorbent composition, absorbent temperature, steam content of the gas, and tar vapors and dust in producer gas is discussed.

After a long series of laboratory and in-mine tests, a cost- effective, mineworthy, reduced-noise auger miner cutting head was de signed, fabricated, and field-tested by Wyle Laboratories under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Compared with standard auger cutting heads, the new heads reduced noise by 10 dBA at the jacksetter's position and by 6 dBA at the operator's position. This report contains detailed fabrication instructions, including engineering drawings, that show how a standard auger cutting head can be modified to produce a reduced-noise auger.

2. Preliminary Study - Initial Probing 2. 1 Introduction Initial probing of the mine passage is required prior to the emplacement of the sealant material or deployment of the seal checker system. Factors which are of interest in sealing and checking include a. size and condition of the mine passage b. location of the borehole with respect to the ribs c. the presence of water flows d. the proximity to an intersection The importance of each of these factors depends strongly on the sealant material. Because the sealant material had not been selected at the time of the initial probing study, a broad survey of probing techniques was conducted. The capabilities and limitations of each technique as they applied to probing through the borehole were identified. To facilitate this comparitive evaluation, Table I was prepared which lists all passage conditions which might affect the emplacement of sealant material in the passage. The most satisfactory techniques for observing each condition of interest are listed together with the effects of the observation on the sealing operation. Approach Use short-term gravimetric sampling to determine the severity of various dust sources, and to evaluate dust control techniques used in longwall mining. Short-term gravimetric sampling can be used to isolate dust levels produced by various dust sources. How It Works Traditionally, gravimetric samples have been collected over an 8-hour shift, yielding time-weighted, average dust concentrations. This method gives a good indication of the full-shift respirable dust exposure of underground workers, but is less than satisfactory for identifying dust sources, determining their severity, or for evaluating the effectiveness of dust control techniques. Short-term gravimetric sampling uses equipment available to all mine operators. Two individuals composing the survey team each collect multiple (three to four) gravimetric samples during selected segments of the mining cycle. Multiple samples are necessary to insure accuracy, and to obtain a valid average measurement of the respirable dust concentration when sampling for short periods of time (typically 20 to 30 minutes). The gravimetric instruments may be carried in a sampling package or in a "sampling vest." A fishing vest with four large pockets can be used for this purpose. The sampling pumps are carried in pockets and the sampling head assemblies arc hung across the front of the vest.

"INTRODUCTION Scheelite occurring in tactite at the Black Rock tungsten mine, near Benton in Mono County, Calif., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey as part of their search for additional sources of supply of strategic minerals authorized under the Strategic Materials Act. 3/4/The work accomplished by the Bureau, and the assays of samples taken are described in this manuscript. The ore found aided materially in prolonging the operating life of the mine during the recent national emergency, supplying much-needed tungsten for war use. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigations of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more efficient utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The producing iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette and Menominee in Michigan, the Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. The accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year owing to stockpiling underground ore during the winter, or nonshipping, season but closely approximate each other over a period of years. This information circular supplements, combines, and continues the data contained in Information Circulars 7321 3/ and 7410 4/, including statistics for 1946 and 1947.Whereas the title ""Accident Experience"" is used for uniformity and logical indexing throughout this report, ""injury"" will be used as a general term to apply to disabilities of all degrees.During the 8-year period 1940 to 1947, inclusive, 619,054,023 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 5/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 117,828,939 tons, or 19.03 percent of the total, and employed approximately 9,260 men. Minnesota shipped 501,225,084 tons, or 80.97 percent of the total, and employed an approximate annual average of 12,260 men. The tons produced and shipped per man employed in Minnesota is much greater than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

These mines use a wide variety of extraction methods, but they have many common dust sources and dust control needs. Ore passes, drills, blasting, conveyor belts, transfer points, crushers, and load-haul-dump operations can be major sources of dust. Roadheaders, which are sometimes used in hard-rock mines, produce dust in large quantities. For the most part, dust in hard-rock mines is controlled with ventilation air, water sprays, and dust collectors. It is also important to prevent dust from getting into the air in the first place. Good dust control practices will reduce overall mine ventilation requirements. [Lack of maintenance is the main source of dust problems in hard-rock mines according to Rodgers [1974], who conducted a dust survey of hard-rock mines several decades ago. Rodgers found that spray systems had clogged sprays, dust enclosures had improperly fitted skirts, and ductwork was plugged and had leaks. Today’s mines have better maintenance programs (we think), but when dust levels are high, maintenance is still the first topic to address.] The Mining Association of Canada [MAC 1980] and Knight [1980] provide good general information about hard-rock dust control. For conveyor belt dust control, Goldbeck and Marti [1996] and Swinderman et al. [1997] are valuable sources of information.

Carbonate minerals constitute a major fraction of the oil shale in Colorado's Green River Formation. Quantification of carbonate minerals is important for the characterization of oil shale, particularly because of their thermal activity in production of oil from shale. The carbonate minerals found in this oil shale are nahcolite (NaHCO3), dawsonite [NaA1(OH)2CO3], dolomite [(Mg1-xFx)Ca(CO3)2], calcite (CaCO3), and ferroan [(Mg1-xFex)CO3]. Although carbonate minerals can be removed by acid extraction from the balance of the oil shale, direct determination of carbonate minerals is complicated by the occurrence of the same cations in more than one mineral. A method for assigning the acid-soluble cations to the individual carbonate minerals was developed from two assumptions based on oil shale geochemistry: (1) Calcite and ferroan do not occur together, and (2) the ratio of iron and magnesium is the same in dolomite and ferroan. These assumptions were tested by the Bureau of Mines by applying the technique for assigning cations to 219 samples from the saline section of the formation. The reported carbonate mineral amounts were compared statistically with X-ray diffraction peak heights, verifying the cation assignment method.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the principles of support-rock interaction, based on structural matrix methods which permit mathematical formulation of the problem and computer solution. The principles are given under two main sections: the first discusses the idealization of the tunnel support structural system for matrix analysis; the latter discusses the analysis procedures necessary for carrying out the solution. A general frame matrix computer program and a medium-size computer should be sufficient for carrying out the procedures involved. The example problem consists of a circular tunnel support which is subjected to a uniformly distributed vertical load, Three wall thickness-radius ratios are studied in combination with four support-rock modulus ratios. This problem illustrates the main procedures of the support-rock interaction analysis involved, and examination of the results reveals the influence of the relative rigidities of the support and the rock.
