The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale leaching tests with recycled spent copper electrolytes and copper-nickel mattes produced from the Minnesota Duluth Complex concentrates. This report describes the first stage of an overall two-stage leach operation. The objective of this research was to determine the matte-leach technology required to convert spent copper electrolyte into an enriched nickel liquor suitable for a nickel refinery and there-fore essentially free of copper, iron, and sulfuric acid. The experimental variables investigated were matte composition, particle size, spent electrolyte content, pulp concentration, oxygenation, temperature, and time. The time required to produce an enriched purified nickel liquor decreased with increasing pulp concentration, temperature, and oxygenation, but increased with increasing particle size and electrolyte copper and acid content. Nickel-rich (about 50 g/l) liquors at a pH of about 4 and containing less than 1 g/l of copper and iron were produced at 70° C by leaching minus 325-mesh low-iron (less than 5 pct) matte for 8 hours with spent electrolyte containing 22.4 g/l Cu, 28.9 g/l Ni, less than 0.1 g/l Fe, and 50 g/l H2S04 at a pulp concentration of 1 kg of matte per liter of spent electrolyteo Varying the nickel content of the spent electrolyte from 11 to 101 g/l appeared to have no appreciable influence on the matte leaching characteristics.

The recovery of copper by leaching from relatively low grade ores containing both oxidized and sulphide minerals is rapidly gaining in commercial importance. There is an economic limit below which certain ores can not be treated by concentration methods, and material with values below this limit must be discarded, possibly to be treated later, or the copper must be extracted by wet processes. Heap leaching has been carried out by the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Copper Queen Branch, for several years, and to-day its plant is a large producing unit. The Ohio Copper Coy at Bingham, Utah; has been leaching in place since 1919. Many other leaching operations are also being; carried out in various parts of the United States and in foreign countries. The plant at Rio Tinto, Spain, may be considered the father of heap leaching.

Chalk is defined as a noncrystalline, soft, friable, fine-grained, light-colored type of limestone. It consists essentially of calcareous shells of minute organisms known as "foraminifera," although skeletal remains of molluscs, corals, and sponges are also present. Flint balls which are found so commonly in the chalk cliffs of Europe are regarded as segregations of the remains of certain organisms, such as radiolarians and sponges, that secrete siliceous shells or spicules. The famous chalk beds of northwestern Europe are of Upper Cretaceous age, a geological period that was particularly favorable for the develop- ment and multiplication of foraminifera. The distinguishing physical characteristics of true chalk never have been fully defined; probably its noncrystalline and colloidal properties are most important. The properties of chalk, whiting, and whiting substitutes are not well understood, and much re- search is necessary before definite reasons may be ascribed for the behavior of these materials under various conditions of use. The Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of chalk and similar materials to determine their exact properties and to establish a basis for classifying formations loosely designated as chalk occurring in various parts of the United States, but the results of this study will not be available for some months. Whiting is a pulverized, purified, and carefully sized chalk. Whiting substitutes consist of finely ground limestone or dolomite, ground marble (marble flour), white marl, and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate.

"INTRODUCTION Spodumene and lepidolite were shipped from the Harding pegmatite deposit, Taos County, N. Mex., in the period from 1930 to 1930. Tantalum minerals were noted as early as 1924 and described in 1931 3/ but no tantalum ore was shipped until 1942. The deposit was mapped and studied by geologists of the Federal Geological Survey and engineers of the Bureau of Mines late in 1942 and early in 1943, and a Bureau of Minus exploratory project was carried out in 1943. 4/ Thu following report presents the results of that project.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Minos has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greates possible contribution to national security and economy. The added hazards to mining incident to oil and gas wells penetrating the coal measures in proximity to mine workings , have long been recognized in those fields where the extraction of oil , gas , and coal , has been in progress for a number of years . The history of these fields is replete with stories of serious mine fires , explosions , and miraculous escapes from both fires and explosions due to either oil or gas finding its way into the mine workings through the strata , or by mining into an unknown or uncharted and abandoned oil or gas well that had not been properly plugged . The Director of the Bureau of Mines , in response to numerous requests from coal operators and oil and gas operators , called a meeting in 1913 to discuss necessary precationary measures to take when drilling oil or gas wells through workable coal beds and to try , if possible . to formulate a set of regulations that might serve as a guide to those persons preparing regulations covering the drilling of oil and gas wells in the various coal producing States . This meeting was attended by representatives of the coal , oil , and gas industries , State geologists , State mine inspectors , and representatives of the Bureau of Mines . A committee was appointed to prepare a set of regulations , which was later published as U.S.Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 53 ; the discussions and results of the meeting werepublished as U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 65 . Later , the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appointed a committee to draft a model law for the use of the legislature of any State concerned . This committee made its report on April 27 , 1928 . Several of the coal mining States now have more or less comprehensive regulations governing the drilling of oil or gas wells through workable coal beds , others have regulations that are inadequate , while some have no regulations . The State of West Virginia recently enacted a law containing reg lations which are the result of a comprehensive and careful study of the problem .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted explosion tests on various full-scale cementitious bulkheads used in abandoned mine areas to evaluate the ability of the bulkheads to withstand gas explosion over-pressures of 20 psig. Tests were performed on 120-ft2 solid-concrete-block seals of varying thicknesses and designs. Of the seven solid-concrete-block seals tested, only the standard-type seal, having a 16-in thickness, keyed at the floor and ribs, all joints mortared, wedged at the roof, and a center pilaster, maintained its integrity when subjected to a 20-psig pressure wave. After being subjected to repeated explosions, the standard seal only showed a small hairline crack and had an air leakage of 87 ft3/min at a pressure differential of 1 in H2O. Tests were performed on cementitious foam seals of varying thicknesses and compressive strengths. Explosion tests have shown that 200-psi strength, 4-and 8-ft-thick seals can withstand a 20-psig pressure wave. At a pressure differential of 1 in H20, no air leakage was detected through the 200-psi, 8-ft-thick foam seal.

The extent to which coal mines have installed various types of haulage systems and mining machines is a subject about which there is little definite information available in convenient form for the country as a whole . A few State mine inspectors include in their annual reports such information for their respective States , but uniform data for the United States have not until recently been compiled . Several years ago the Bureau of Mines compiled from one of the standard mining directories * a statement showing the kinds of machines and haulage used in coal mines . The first statement was prepared from the 1918 edition of the directory in which detailed descriptions of coal mines were given . The information presumably related to the calendar year 1917. Similar statements have been compiled from the directories for 1919 , 1920 , and 1922 , the statement for 1921 having been omitted because the directory for that year did not become available . The latest statement is given below and is based upon the directory for 1922. It relates to conditions prevailing in 1921 , and covers a total of 7,088 coal mines . Of these , 5,064 mines . or more than 71 per cent , were using animal haulage . As compared with the total number of all classes of mines , those in the animal - haul age group constituted 71.4 per cent , the percentage having remained practically stationary during the past four years , although the actual number of mines in the group has increased . Rope haulage was reported by 1,066 mines , or 15 per cent of the total , representing a larger number of mines than in 1918 , but a decrease of 2 in the percentage for the group as compared with all classes of mines . Electric haulage was reported by 3,274 mines (46.2 per cent ) , and the number of motors in use was 11,265 . The percentage of mines in this class has not changed materially, but the actual number of mines has shown a gain of about 900 during the past four years . Compressed-air locomotives have not increased either in actual or relative number , the percentage for the past year being but 1.2 . The number of mines using storage- battery locomotives has increased from 3.6 per cent of the total shown four years ago , to 9.8 per cent for last year, the latest figures showing 693 mines with 1,428

"Using. ESR spin trapping methodology, evidence was obtained that fresh quartz dust in a cell-free aqueous medium generated hydroxyl - and possibly superoxide radicals. The hydroxyl radical generation potential decreases on storing of fresh quartz dust in ambient air and on the addition of either catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. The role of quartz related radicals in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis is suggested from these findings.IntroductionThis report summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of oxygenated radical formation by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its inihibition by radical scavengers. This study was undertaken with to elucidate the primary biochemical mechanism involved in the development of silicosis (Farber, 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). In particular the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood (Farber. 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979;). It is generally believed that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process (Farber, 1983; Parazzi et al., 1968). Thus the surface characteristics of the quartz particles have been the subject of several recent studies (Bolls et al.. 1983; Dalai et al., 1986; Fubini et al., 1987). Recently, We reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates free radicals which decay with time, and that these free radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to aged dust from the same stock (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al.. 1988). The formation of Si• and. SiO--type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, Gulumian and van Wyk (1987) have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity. However, these authors did not report the effects of metal chelators, so it was not clear as to whether the detected -OH radicals simply resulted from the Fenton reaction involving exogenous metal ion contaminants. Earlier, Marasas and Harington (1960) reported that quartz particles could function as an oxidant in a number of in vitro oxidations, including the hydroxylation of proline and lysine. They postulated that silica dusts, on reacting with water, could release H2O2 which might have the potential to react with various biological constituents and thus cause tissue damage. In fact, Gabor and coworkers (Gabor and Anca, 1974; Gabor et al., 1975) suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some 'factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radicals capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently Weitzman and Graceffa (1984) reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of • OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work indicated that lipid peroxidation may be one of the mechanism by which asbestos produces tissue injury (Weitzman and Weitberg, 1985). This is significant because • OH radicals are capable of causing peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membrane (Fong et al., 1973). In fact, the formation of oxygenated species in reactions involving quartz was suspected since Kolbanev et al. (1980) reported the detection of H2O2 in the reaction of fresh quartz particle with aqueous medium. The present work was thus undertaken to detect the anticipated formation of some oxygenated, radical species by reactions of quartz in a cell-free media and its inhibition by radical"

The removal of coal particles from a slurry by flotation is made possible by the formation of stable aggregates with air bubbles of suitable sizes. The formation of such aggregates is theoretically possible only for certain favorable combinations of the solid-liquid-gas interfacial tensions. Because interfacial tensions involving solid phases are not conveniently measurable, a related variable, the contact angle, frequently is used as a measure of the floatability of various materials. Zero angles indicate nonfloatable substances, and large angles indicate substances having a high degree of floatability. During a study of contact angles for coal and substances related to coal in their similarity of response to various physical and chemical treatments, particularly flotation, carbonization, and oxidation, the reproducibility of replicate determinations taken within a 4-hour period was found to be much better than that for comparable results taken over a longer period of time. Consideration of possible causes for these differences led to an investigation of the effects of temperature variations on contact angles. References to literature revealed only a small amount of information, some of it apparently conflicting. Specifically, Sutherland and Wark4/ found that temperature variations "within limits" did not appreciably influence the angles measured for galena conditioned with potassium ethyl xanthate. On the other hand, McGlashan and McLeod5/ presented preliminary data showing that for sphalerite conditioned with potassium ethyl xanthate the angle is maximum at 25° to 35° C., depending on the pH of the system.

[In a certain application it was necessary to compute the incomplete beta function, ß(1/2, p, q), for a certain set of values of p and q. Since the set of p and q values was much more finely spaced than those in any published tables, the authors have decided to make their results available in this report. In connection with this application, the function ß(1/2, p, q) was needed at various points in the p, q plane at intervals of 0.05, 0.05 p = 2q < 10.00. Fletcher, Miller, and Rosenhead3/ state that the only tables available in the desired range are those of Pearson.4/ However, the interval used by Pearson was not small enough for the present application. For this reason, it was decided to calculate the function ß(1/2, p, q) for p = q = 0.05 (0.05) 10.00. This table is published because of the fundamental importance in mathematical analysis of the incomplete beta function.]

An accurate characterization of the vibration environment and a vibration qualification test derived from it will be a very useful tool for manufacturers of instrumentation for use on underground coal mining equipment. Recognizing this, the Bureau of Mines sponsored a study wherein vibration levels were measured on mining equipment to form a basis for developing the required vibration test. The data base was composed of 160 samples taken at different positions on a variety of underground machinery. The data were analyzed and presented in a format typical of military vibration qualification tests. The form was shown to be virtually identical to the swept sine test envelope specified in MIL-STD-810B for tracked vehicles.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a portable meter for measuring the component concentrations in binary dust mixtures whose constituents have different optical reflectivities. The meter has been successfully tested with coal dust-rock dust mixtures taken from coal mines in Europe and the United States and fluorinated-carbon mixtures that change from carbon black to pure white during fluorination. Additional study has also substantiated the theoretical expressions used in the design of the meter.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." "The underlying principle of the storage battery was discovered within the memory of many still living, hence storage-battery locomotives, which were made possible by this discovery, represent a still more recent development. The Journal of the Franklin Institute for December, 1883, gives an account of the building of an electrical omnibus by The Electrical Storage Battery Co., of Millwall, London, This, if not the first, was among the first attempts to, use the storage battery as the source of energy for locomotion.During the period 1888 to 1893 occasional attempts were made to apply this idea practically, but not much was achieved along useful lines.. The progress during the next, 15 years was slow, and little success was achieved. Therefore, the last two decades may be considered the successful development period of the storage-battery locomotive.In coal mining, the application of the storage-battery locomotive is chiefly in gathering service in competition with animal or cable-reel locomotives. The locomotive delivers empty cars to the rooms or working places where the coal is being mined and hauls the loaded cars from the rooms. The length of haul depends upon the distance of, the junction point from the active workings of the mine. As a rule the haulage from the junction point to the foot of the shaft or bottom of the slope is done by trolley locomotives, but in some instances where the grades permit this main-line haulage work it: performed by storage-battery locomotives.As the place storage-battery locomotives occupy with respect to safe haulage in gassy mines appears to be misunderstood, it is the purpose of this paper to clarify this point.Those who originally designed storage-battery locomotives had no thought of safety in mind and it is just as well that they did not, as these early types of storage-battery locomotives with open controller open motor, open rheostats, flimsy headlights, and crude wiring were very dangerous electrically and not at' all suitable for use in a gassy mine. These locomotives, however, were placed in mines in which open lights were permitted and they replaced considerable animal haulage. Later they were gradually introduced in mines where closed lights were used, but in most cases these mines were not extremely gassy."

Several parameters controlling the reproducibility of tritium determina¬tion in organic compounds by liquid scintillation counting were evaluated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These included optimum volume of scintillator solution for maximum counting efficiency, reproducibility of counting a sealed commercial standard and comparison with duplicate counts on laboratory-prepared samples. The error introduced by using microliter pipets, optical differences in counting vials, reproducibility of counting organic samples where quenching is a factor, reproducibility of counting laboratory-prepared samples with an added internal standard, optimum ratio of internal standard activity to sample activity, effect of sample volume upon counting efficiency, count rate at which coincidence losses become apparent, and reproducibility of organic compound radioassay by the standard addition technique are outlined. From the evaluation of these parameters, a technique that can be applied routinely to organic compounds containing tritium has been established, and details are included in this report.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to evaluate superplastic behavior in commercial magnesium-base alloys AZ6IA, ZK60A, ZW3, AZ3IB, ZWI, and an experimental Mg-12 pct Al alloy. Strain-rate sensitivity indices (m-values), maximum elongations, and effects of superplastic elongation on tensile properties were determined on fine-grained sheet. Inert-gas-pressure hemisphere-forming tests were conducted on selected sheet stock of the five alloys. Formability trials on AZ31B alloy sheet were conducted on industrial equipment for comparison with commercial superplastic forming of Zn-AI alloy. Closed-die-forming tests were performed on extruded ZK60A rod. All alloys exhibited well over 100-pct elongation, indicating superplasticity, at temperatures and strain rates near the maximum m-values. Tensile properties were generally reduced following 100-pct superplastic elongation, but not to an extent that would preclude use of the commercial alloys in the superplastically deformed condition. The potential for industrial superplastic forming of AZ31B sheet was indicated by hemisphere forming in the laboratory and substantiated in industrial forming trials.
