For the past three or four years attention has been attracted to the deposits of lead vanadate in the Goodsprings , Nevada , district . Some ore running as high as 9 per cent 205 has been produced , but most of it runs from 0.5 to 3 per cent . Only a little ore , and that of the richer sort , has been shipped , since the low- grade ore will not stend the cost of shipment and no concentration mill has been available . Preliminary experiments indicate that chemical treatment of the low- grade ore without concentration is not feasible . Its treatment therefore involves two distinct problems ; first , mechanical concentration ; and second , a smelting or chemical treatment to obtain the lead and vanadium in marketable form . Upon this basis the work has been conducted . The writer wishes to acknowledge the excellent work done by J. T. Norton and Virgil Miller on table concentration and by J. E. Conley , who suggested and did preliminary work on the direct smelting method . Many helpful suggestions were received from Dr. S. C. Lind and John Gross of the Bureau of Mines . Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. In 2005, a total of 2,063 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Coal mines comprised 14.1% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.6% (n=1,911) and anthracite mines 7.4% (n=152) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.0%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

In water flooding the gradual accumulation of insoluble materials on the sand face causes the injection pressures to increase while decreasing the amount of water injected . This plugging material often is composed primarily of insoluble precipitates of calcium , iron , and magnesium . Treatment with sodium tripolyphosphate ( STP ) either eliminates or reduces the formation of precipitates . Field tests are discussed showing the almost immediate effects of using STP in the injection water . Methods of treatment , solubility of STP in fresh water and brines , and precautions to observe when starting to treat a waterflood with this chemical are given . Laboratory data show that the preferential wettability of a crude oil for reservoir rock can be reversed by adding a small amount of STP to the flooding water . This reversal in wetting tendency should not only decrease the injection pressures but also increase oil recovery by improving the sweep efficiency of a water flood .

Olefin and paraffin mixtures (C10-C16 and C10-C22) were separated from low-temperature lignite tar by urea adduction and sulfated to yield secondary alkyl sulfate detergents. The C10 ?C16 secondary alkyl sulfate showed a 99.3 percent biodegradability, and the C10-C22 fraction showed a 96.8 percent biodegradability, exceeding the required standard of 80 percent for the biodegradability of anionic detergents in washing and cleaning compounds. Chlorination of paraffins yielded a detergent of 93.2 to 93.4 percent biodegradability.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews U.S. helium resources as of January 1, 1973. These resources, estimated to be 693.7 billion cubic feet, are broken down into four classifications, as follows: helium in storage, 34.9 billion cubic feet; helium in measured helium-rich natural gas reserves, 119.5 billion cubic feet; helium in measured helium-lean natural gas reserves, 62.8 billion cubic feet; and helium in indicated or undiscovered natural gas resources, 476.5 billion cubic feet. The helium in undiscovered natural gas is considered a national resource; however, this gas may not be discovered depending on many factors beyond the scope of this paper, and most of the helium in natural gas will be dissipated as the gas is consumed for fuel and other purposes.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted on copper converter slags to evaluate the relative merits of recovering copper from slow-cooled versus water-quenched slags. Three slags containing 1.6, 5.0, and 6.6 percent copper were used. More than 90 percent of the copper was recovered in a rougher concentrate leaving a 0.2- to 0.3-percent copper tailings when treating slow-cooled slag. Lower recoveries and higher copper tailings ranging from 0.5 to 0.6 percent copper were obtained from quenched slag. Grindability studies were made on the respective heat-treated slags. Quenched slags proved more difficult to grind than slow-cooled slags. Cost studies showed that quenched slags can be treated at slightly lower cost than slow-cooled slags. However, the cost advantage of processing quenched slags is more than offset by the higher copper recoveries obtained from slow-cooled slags.

In connection with its research in producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal, the Federal Bureau of Mines studied reactions of iron and iron compounds with hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide in batch autoclaves. The Bureau hoped to gain indirect evidence regarding the chemical changes that iron catalysts undergo when they are used in the hydrogenation of coal. The information obtained may be helpful in identifying the active form or forms of iron catalysts. At 450° C., with hydrogen at hundreds of atmospheres and hydrogen sulfide at 1 or 2 atmospheres, the thermodynamically stable form of iron is ferrous sulfide in the case of the metal, magnetite, ferric oxide, ferrous sulfate, ferrous oxalate, or the chlorides of iron. However, complete conversion to ferrous sulfide was not achieved at temperatures of 400° to 500° C. for kinetic reasons. Extensive sulfiding of iron, magnetite, ferric oxide, and ferrous oxalate occurred below 400° C., and some conversion of ferrous sulfate to ferrous sulfide occurred at 400° C. In the hydrogenation of coal, ferrous sulfide is the form of iron likely to be available for heterogeneous catalysis when starting with the metal, oxide, sulfate, or oxalate.

Energy dispersion X-ray analysis was evaluated for possible application in the secondary metals industries for the rapid analysis and identification of copper-base alloys. Laboratory investigations of standard brass and bronze samples indicate that X-ray methods are capable of separating standard alloys into 10 general classes with analytical times of less than 3 seconds per sample for clean, flat samples. A radioactive source of americium 241 with a secondary fluorescer was used as an excitation source, and a lithium-drifted silicon semiconductor detector was utilized for energy discrimination of X-rays.

Size distributions and concentrations of particulates emitted from diesel engine exhausts were measured with cascade impactors. Samples were taken from the exhaust of two types of engines using three types of fuel and operating under five different engine speed and load conditions. The measured mass median diameters of the diesel particulates were typically about 0.3 um. There was no significant difference in mass median diameter between engines or fuels and only a slight dependence on operating mode. Concentration measurements ranged from 14.2 to 250.9 mg/cu m, and calculated mass outputs, from 64 to 10,000 mg/min. Significant differences in mass output were found between engines, fuels, and especially between different operating modes. The quantity of clean dilution air that would be required to reduce the particulate mass concentration below the 2.0 mg/cu m respirable dust standard for coal mines was greater than the dilution air required to meet the standards for noxious gases for both engines tested.

The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.

The rapid depletion of zinc-lead ore reserves and the rising costs of exploration have been major factors in the decline of mining activities and explorations for additional reserves in the Tri-State mining district. There is a need to develop new or adopt known, improved exploration techniques that will appreciably lower the costs of exploration. Demonstration of the practicability of using improved techniques to indicate, rapidly and cheaply, mineralized areas or geologic structures where more intensive explorations are justified could stimulate the search for and discovery of additional ore reserves. Various operators in the Tri-State district have used geophysical surveys to some extent since 1928 to guide exploratory drilling. Some geophysical investigations have also been made in the district by the State Geological Surveys of Kansas (11)3/ and Missouri (8, 13) and by Federal agencies (16), with the objective of directing exploratory drilling to areas where geologic conditions favored ore deposition. Many factual data obtained have not been published. The investigations generally have not been broad enough to permit conclusive evaluation of the usefulness of the geophysical techniques in all parts of the district.

An improved mathematical model with the attendant computer program to calculate multiphase fluid flow in petroleum reservoirs is presented. The model is used to simulate the behavior when a fluid is used to displace hydro-carbon fluids in a reservoir. The method is an expansion of a previously published method, in Bureau of Mines RI 7011, but handles constant injection rate as an alternative to constant pressure. Program documentation is provided along with thorough explanations of the added program features. Using the program, the petroleum engineer can calculate oil recoveries for different flood patterns and operating conditions and select the conditions most likely to optimize recovery. Experience with the previous model demonstrated the need for the improvements in order to simulate reservoir behavior more accurately. The improved method will result in improved oil recovery. In this paper, the significant improvements are described in detail so that anyone interested can put the program to use.

"Carbon monoxide is a gas slightly lighter than air, with which it diffuses readily to make a homogeneous mixture. It will burn and has a wide explosive range, that is, an explosion is possible when the air contains from 15 to 73 per cent of the gas3. This explosive range is about the same as that for hydrogen and over nine times As Tide as that for marsh gas (methane). Like air, it has neither color nor taste and has no odor in concentrations usually encountered, therefore it cannot be detected by the ordinary senses with which men are endowed. It is produced by burning carbon containing fuels, no coal, wood, gasoline, etc., whenever not enough air or oxygen is supplied to burn and oxidize the fuel completely.The human race has probably been exposed to this gas since men first began using fires in confined or sheltered places. The poisoning as usually encountered is an acute condition resulting from breathing atmospheres con¬taining this gas. A number of eases described in the ancient literature Indicate that carbon monoxide was a frequent cause of death by accident, suicide and is a means of punishment or torture. A quotation by Lewin from Aristotle who lived in 384-322 B.C., states that ""animals collapse from harmful odors as men gets a severe headache and often dies through charcoal vapors"". The Roman knew that smoke was poisonous, and used the greenest most smoke-producing wood to put persons to death. The occurrence of carbon monoxide increased in frequency through the years until at the present time it is found in the home as well as in many industries. The following table gives the approximate percentage of carbon monoxide found in gases from various sources of poisoning.4"

"The daily sulphur dioxide content of the air at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines was determined by the bureau at the request of Committee D-14 on Screen Wire Cloth of the American Society for Testing Materials. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain data for use in interpreting screen-corrosion tests, which were conducted simultaneously and jointly by the committee4 and the Bureau of Mines.The plan of this investigation was to vale a single daily determination, except on Sundays and holidays, of the SO2 content of the atmosphere at the exposed test screens, for a period of one year. No attempt was made to determine the variation during the day, except on the morning of October 15, 1927, when the atmosphere was unusually foggy and smoky. Several successive determinations were made on that date to ascertain changes in the SO2 as the morning haze disappeared. The SO2 determinations were begun on August 11, 1927, and continued until August 11, 1923.The Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines is in a residential section about 3 miles east of the central or main business district of Pittsburgh. The air samples were taken on the roof above the auditorium, or the center rear of the building. This was also the place where the pieces of screen were placed for corrosion tests. The height was about 40 feet above ground level. Several sources of considerable smoke and SO2 are in the immediate vicinity. On the west side of the building is a double-track railroad. At this point the line runs through a cat below the level of the building. The horizontal distance between the air-sampling position and the railroad tracks is about 400 feet, and the vertical distance about 70 feet. The power plant for the Bureau of Mines building is about 250 feet south of the sampling position. About 1000 feet farther to the south are the engineering building and power plant of Carnegie Institute of Technology, and 1/4 mile to the southwest is the power and heating plant for the Carnegie Library and Museum. About 1 to 2 miles farther south and also southwest"

A numerical method is presented to calculate the isopressure (isobar) lines and streamlines for an oilfield from the pressure distribution. A knowledge of these lines is useful in the study of the flow of fluids in underground reservoirs, especially for those containing gaseous and/or liquid hydrocarbons. This work was done primarily to enable determination of the shape factors needed in the calculation of petroleum reservoir performance. However, it has application for the flow of water in aquifers, or electricity or heat in odd-shaped geometry. Techniques previously developed were used to calculate the pressure distribution. From this pressure distribution, the isopressure lines were calculated accurately by the method presented in this paper. Then by successively projecting orthogonal lines from one isopressure line to another, the streamlines are determined. From the coordinates of the isopressures and the streamlines, the shape factors can then be determined by a published method. Computer methods are presented to calculate the streamlines and isopressures for any well-spacing pattern existing within a field with multiple wells. The method reproduces the flow net for several well configurations having extensive geometrical variations. Such information provides the petroleum engineer with data from which he can compute oil recoveries for different patterns and thereby maximize the recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir.
