A two-inch diameter probe containing an intrinsic germanium detector, a canister-type solid cryogen cooling system, cooled FET preamplifier, linear amplifier, high voltage supply, analog-digital converter, microprocessor, buffer memory, bidirectional cable link, and all power supplies has been designed, assembled and tested. A surface support vehicle was designed, built and outfitted. A mini-computer system was constructed and preliminary software developed and tested. A special handling system for a Cf-252 neutron source was designed and has been ordered. The entire system (less the neutron source) is ready for its first field tests. Lab description of the system is presented.

A 1,000-hour test with a gas turbine at 1,200° F showed a working fluid of 1 gr of ash per 100 scf of power gas (79 percent of the ash 7 to 35 microns in diameter) to be excessive for acceptable blade wear for commercial practicability. Blades in the turbine consisted of about 20 percent each of chromium, cobalt, and nickel; 3 percent molybdenum; 2-1/2 percent tungsten; and smaller amounts of manganese, columbium, and tantalum. Erosion of both the fronts and backs of the turbine nozzles was particularly heavy, the trailing edges being worn to a featheredge. Erosion of the buckets was less marked, although the leading edges were somewhat pitted. A refractory-lined combustor performed efficiently and with little abrasion of the lining by the ash-laden gas.

"MANGANESE-SILOCON ALLOYS AS DEOXIDIZERSThe basic open-hearth process for steel mining requires large amounts of oxidized iron for oxidation of the elements carbon, silicon, manganese, and phosphorus which are to be removed from the metal. Some of this oxidized iron (FeO) dissolves in the metal during the refining process, Subsequent to the elimination of the elements named, a considerable amount of dissolved iron oxide must be removed before the metal may be cast into ingot form. The elements generally used, for iron oxide removal, or deoxidation, are silicon, manganese, and aluminum. Silicon and manganese are always alloyed with iron, either singly or in combinations of various compositions. Aluminum generally is used in a commercially pure state and sometimes in complex alloys. A double deoxidizer of manganese and silicon alloyed with iron for furnace deoxidation has been the subject of an extensive cooperative investigation between the United States Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. Certain grader of steel, especially low-carbon rimming steels, require a low-carbon deoxidizer to keep the finished steel within the carbon specification after deoxidation. "The wetting behavior of coal has been determined in the presence of nonyl and octyl series of nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy groups of different sizes. The wetting behavior was determined by a modified Walker technique and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wetting rate of coal varies with coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain and number of ethoxy groups in the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. A close relationship has been observed between the wetting rates and the short-time advancing contact angles.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants are used in many applications to improve wettability of solids. They can be used as dispersing agents [ 1 ] or dust suppressants [ 2-5] and to control the flotation, flocculation, filtration and, flowability of particulates. This study was undertaken to study the effect of a series of nonionic surfactants on the wetting behavior of coal. Two series of surfactants, namely, ethoxylated nonyl and octyl phenols were used. The nonyl phenol series con tains a linear hydrocarbon chain containing nine carbon atoms (CH3 ( CH2 )8-C6H4- ( OC2H4 ) n, where n is the number of ethoxy groups) . The octyl phenol series contains a branched hydrocarbon chain containing eight' carbon atoms ( ( CH3 ) 3CCH2C ( CH3) 2-C6H4- ( OC2H4 ) n ).Initial wetting rates — modified Walker techniqueWalker et al. [ 6 ] developed a sink test to determine the wettability of coal particles. In this technique, coal particles are dropped individually onto the surface of surfactant solutions of different concentrations, and the most dilute concentration in which coal would sink ""instantaneously"" is determine& This technique is a variation of a procedure initially developed by Draves and Clarkson [ 7 ] to determine the effect of surfactants on wettability of cotton fibers."

This Bureau of Mines report reviews and assesses the technology for preparing electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals from molten alkali metal cyanide baths. Methods are described for the preparation and purification of the cyanide electrolyte. Vacuum drying, fusion, and purity of the cyanide salts are discussed. Use of a sodium borosilicate test tube as a sodium-ion-conducting membrane for the addition of the desired platinum-group metal is described. The optimum plating parameters of potential and current density for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, and Ir coatings that result in the best deposits are given. A method for producing platinum-rhodium alloy coatings of predetermined composition is also described. The importance of careful substrate surface preparation is illustrated. While problems still remain with respect to coating porosity, careful application of the methods described permits the preparation of adherent, coherent electrodeposited coatings of the platinum-group metals.

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. In order to reduce waste and improve resource conservation, mine planning, and development, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the effects of multiple seam interactions associated with longwall coal mining. Field investigations were conducted at a mine located in Boone County, WV, where a longwall panel was operating subjacent to room-and-pillar workings in an overlying seam. To assess the effects of overlying workings on longwall headgate stability, the Bureau gathered various geotechnical information at this minesite. Headgate pillars and entries were instrumented and monitored to study their behavior during side-abutment loading as the longwall panel approached and passed beneath the overlying room-and-pillar developments. The two operations are separated by 800 ft of interburden, and although interactions between operations separated by this distance are uncommon, geomechanical measurements indicate the occurrence of an interaction. These measurements show that convergence on the headgate entries was most adverse subjacent to barrier pillars in the overlying mine. Pillar measurements indicate that side-abutment pressure increases were slightly greater than predicted values. Several factors related to both geology and mine design, believed responsible for this large interactive distance, are discussed.

This Bureau of Mines study covers 25 underground mines that were active in the Upper and Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coalbeds in 1976. The coal ranges from low to medium volatile in rank; its primary use is for steam generation. Seven mines emit more than 100,000 cfd of methane gas; those mines are the deepest and largest producers. The methane gas content of three core samples of the Lower Kittanning coalbed was estimated by the direct method. A sample from a depth of 320 feet contained 0.5 cu cm of gas per gram, at 620 feet there was 0.8 cu cm of gas per gram, and at 1,060 feet there was 11 cu cm of gas per gram. These results suggest that methane control problems will be encountered in the future as deeper coal is mined.

This volume describes software developed for programmable calculators that is useful in the analysis and design of mine electrical power systems. The programs are equally useful for any industrial or commercial power system. All programs are written for both the HP-97 and the TI-59 programmable calculators. Listings of both versions of the twelve programs that were developed appear in the report. The programs that were developed can be broken into two groups. The first group encompasses design-oriented programs. The second group encompasses analysis programs. For each program the following items are provided: a description of the program's capabilities, the solution technique used, instructions on how to use the program, a worked out example with data and results and, finally, listings of the programs for the HP-97 and TI-59 programmable calculators. Typical problems that can be attacked with these programs include ground bed design, selection of contactor size, fuse size, relay settings, instantaneous overcurrent trip settings for trailing cables, allowable cyclic cable loading, short circuit analyses, prediction of transient voltages and others.

As part of the first-order assessment of potential manganese nodule processing reject waste materials, the Bureau of Mines estimated the physical and chemical characteristics of reject waste materials that would be generated from each of five potential process flowsheets. These processes were chosen because of their economic and technical feasibility for first-generation nodule processing. A brief description of the five processes is given to show process inputs and outputs, The physical characteristics are predicted based on land-based laterite processing where applicable, and where no land-based analog exists, on the basis of process chemistry. The probable chemical characteristics such as element content and compound form are tabulated for each process for 16 elements: As, Ba, Be, Cd, Go, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, TI, and Zn. These elements were chosen based on their presence on the toxic substance list of priority pollutants, EP toxicity criteria, and major and minor elements of economic importance (Co, Fe, Mn, and Mo). Physical and chemical analyses as well as results of the EP toxicity test of one industrially supplied pilot plant reject waste material are presented.

This paper describing the practice at the concentrator of the Minas de Matahambre, S. A., is one of a series being; prepared by the Bureau f Mines on milling methods and costs. The Minas de Matahambre, S. A., concentrator treats the production of the Matahambre mine and has a capacity of 1,300 tons of copper ore per day by selective flotation. During the year 1930 the heads averaged 4.55 per cent copper, the concentrates 29.20 per cent copper and the recovery was 95.96 per cent.

Approximately 6,000 coal mines are operated in the United States. All of them have in some degree the elements that are likely to contribute to an explosion, hence it is surprising that explosion disasters are not more frequent and that many mines have been operated for years and finally worked out and abandoned without experiencing an explosion. The absence of coal-mine explosions does not always indicate that effective efforts have been made to prevent them but rather that the nine has been fortunate in that the combination of circumstances necessary to cause an explosion has not existed. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions, disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. The methods of preventing mine explosions are known to experienced, well-informed persons engaged in coal mining, yet despite this knowledge far to many coal-mine operators continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in numerous explosions. Moreover, many mine workers persist in following past procedure irrespective of consequences and in breaking safety rules or indulging in practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. Continued failure to apply known common-sense methods of accident and explosion prevention unquestionably will cell for ultimate enforcement of law.

This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities. The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented, and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed. It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred.

Four samples of Pittsburgh-bed coal, of various size consist and ash content were dewatered in a pilot-size vacuum-disk filter partially enclosed with a steam jacket. Steam fed at 2.5 to 12.5 pounds per minute reduced the moisture content of the filter cakes from 2.8 to 13.8 percentage points more than normal vacuum dewatering. Approximately 1.5 pounds of steam was required to remove 1 pound of water.

Numerous alternative processes have been proposed as being potentially more economical or less polluting than the traditional smelting of copper sulfide concentrates. One such process as recently developed in the laboratory by the Bureau of Mines is composed of a two-stage fluid-bed, oxidation-reduction roasting followed by ammoniacal leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. A copper-leaching recovery of 97.4 percent was obtained, and electrolysis of the acid strip solution deposited metal assaying 99.99 percent copper. The roaster gases contain over 95 percent of the sulfur at a concentration of 12 percent which is better suited for acid making or elemental sulfur production than conventional smelter gas. When considering byproduct recovery, a preliminary estimate indicates copper production costs are com-parable to the conventional smelters.

This report describes a method for treating pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data obtained with a Burnett compressibility apparatus. The method makes use of a general nonlinear least-squares technique developed at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center. It is assumed that an adequate functional form is available for the expression of the compressibility factor as a function of either the molal density or the pressure. The functional form of the compressibility factor can be either linear or nonlinear in the parameters to be evaluated. Formulas are given for calculating variances and covariances of all parameters evaluated and for calculating the variance of calculated quantities of interest.

Research was conducted to examine the feasibility of extracting manganese from Georgia umber ore by a three-stage continuous sulfuric acid-ferrous sulfate pickle liquor leaching process. A continuous cyclic process for treating the umber was operated successfully, using a synthetic solution simulating a ferrous sulfate fortified anolyte solution discharged from a manganese electrolytic cell as the leaching medium. Leaching efficiency based on removal of the manganese from the ore ranged from 83 to 89 percent for all systems tested.
