In general terminology, the West Texas Permian Basin comprises the area south of the Texas Panhandle and west of the Bend Arch or Central Basin region. It is outlined mere definitely by geologists, however, as that area underlain by the south half of the Permian Salt Basin4/ and includes Scurry, Mitchell, Sterling, Howard, Glasscock, Reagan, Crockett, Upton, Midland, Martin, Gaines, Andrews, Ector, Crane, Pecos, Ward, Winkler, and Loving Counties in Texas, and Lea and Eddy Counties in New Mexico. The oil fields of the area, of which more than 70 have been discovered, are shown in fire 1. Approximately 4,200 producing oil wells have been drilled in these fields. Oil has been produced from limestones and dolomites of Permian age in most of the fields in the West Texas Permian Basin. Some of the fields produced oil from sandstone beds above the limestone, and in two fields production has been found below the limestone in formations of Ordovician age.

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. One of the chief hazards in mining bituminous coal is the accumulation of coal dust in the mines . When coal dust is thrown into suspension , it can be ignited and exploded by electricity through short -circuiting of mining machinery and trolley wires , or by arcs and sparks . The Bureau of Mines has endeavored to assist the coal -mining industry in preventing disasters from this cause by urging that all bituminous -coal mines be rock -dusted . As it has been difficult to convince some mining men of the danger of ignition of coal dust and of the effectiveness of rock dusting in preventing widespread explosions , a small , portable , coal -dust - explosion gallery has been designed to demonstrate the explosibility of bituminouscoal dust . Such galleries are furnished to Bureau engineers , inspectors , and safety instructors to illustrate visually and impressively the Bureau's accident -prevention educational work on the causes and prevention of dust explosions in bituminous -coal mines .

A part of the Bureau of Mines mission is to help improve the Nation's mineral posture by providing the technology for utilizing low-grade ores. In this regard, laboratory testing by the Bureau of Mines has shown that the removal of insoluble slimes using selective flocculation and flotation is a viable method for treating low-grade potash ores that have a high content of water-insoluble impurities. Results indicated that over 82 percent of the insoluble slimes could be removed from sylvinite ore containing 5 percent water insolubles and 13 percent K20 by using nonionic or cationic polyacrylamide flocculants and cationic, anionic, and/or nonionic collectors. Subsequent potash flotation recovered 87 percent of the potash in rougher concentrates containing 57 percent K2O. Sizing and cleaner flotation of the rougher concentrates upgraded the products to 60 percent K2O. Filtration of the water-leached insoluble-slimes flotation concentrates on a bed consisting of leached insoluble-slimes concentrate mixed with potash flotation tailings recovered 80 percent of the brine. Filtration rates using the mixed bed were nine times faster than filtration rates obtained when the insoluble-slimes flotation concentrates were filtered separately.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U. S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 56,623-acre South McCullough Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-435) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied is located in Clark County, NV, about 30 miles southwest of Boulder City. No mineral resources were identified. The study area contains the eastern part of the unorganized McCullough Mountain (McClanahan) mining district which has had no recorded production. Between 1911 and 1982, 23 lode claims were located in the part of the mining district that is in the study area; four of these claims are currently held by assessment (1986). A total of 11 mineral sites were found and examined during the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations; 26 mine workings were examined. Of the 11 sites, four are within the study area, and seven are nearby. Of the seven nearby sites, six are adjacent to the west boundary and consist of precious-and base-metals bearing vein occurrences in metamorphic rocks. The seventh site is near the east study area boundary, and consists of a tungsten-bearing vein occurrence that is also in metamorphic rocks. The four sites within the study area consist of vein occurrences in metamorphic rocks that contain silver, gold, arsenic, lead, zinc, and copper. The veins at these four sites are too small and low grade to be classified resources; however, there are indications that three of the sites may have silver and gold resources at depth. Detailed delineation of the veins, and determinations of tonnages and grades are needed. This would entail additional mapping and sampling, trenching and drilling, and opening inaccessible workings.

The vibration levels of the heavy machines used in surface mining are much greater than for vehicles used on highways. In order to assure the proper functioning of electronic equipment placed on the surface mining vehicles, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted a program of field measurements to define their vibration environment. The information in this report is for a class of vehicle that has a blade for scraping and wheels with rubber tires. The statistical information derived from these measurements can be used as a basis for laboratory testing to qualify equipment for a surface mining vehicle of this class. The envelope that would encompass 99 pct of the vibrations encountered in normal operations is presented for each location on the vehicle. The five locations for which data were recorded are the floor of the cab, the engine, the frame, the drive train (gear, differential, and torque converter), and the axle. Tabulated data are provided for those who wish to use a different probability level. The appropriate test profile for the laboratory testing can be determined from the information presented in this report.

On September 4, 2007, Mine Safety and Health Administration, in alliance with the International Union of Operating Engineers and the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers, presented the first annual Mine Construction Maintenance and Repair?s Safety Contractor of the Year Award to Artisan Contracting, Inc., of Cape Girardeau, MO. Eligible contractors located throughout the United States were nominated. Artisan Contracting was nominated by Illinois Cement Company located in LaSalle, IL. Illinois Cement Company is a Division of Eagle Materials Inc., located in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Larry Frankum President of Artisan Contracting Inc., stated, ?While it is gratifying to receive a wonderful award such as this, we must not forget how fragile a good safety record is. We must constantly remain diligent in pursuit of maintaining safe work sites.?

TONNAGE of natural abrasives sold or used in the United States in 1959 increased 12 percent. Artificial abrasives produced in the United States and Canada jumped 24 percent. Imports, exports, and reexports of abrasive materials also showed gains. Sales of grinding wheels were up 33 percent and coated abrasives 17 percent. The purpose of this U.S. Bureau of Mines study was to assess the ability of trainees to don an unfamiliar self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) after having become familiar with how to put on a different type of apparatus. Prepractice instruction was the same for all individuals learning to put on a device: a step-by-step, hands-on talk-through using the "3+3" method. Subjects were assigned to groups that had their initial donning instruction delivered on either the Draeger OXY-SR60B or the CSE SR-100. Trainees' performances were then evaluated using the other model. Donning trials were analyzed using a number of measures. It was found that SCSR design had a moderate influence upon how well the donning task transferred.

Thorium and yttrium oxides were recovered from siliceous ores of the Powderhorn , Colo . , area . Processing comprised ( 1 ) acid curing and subsequent ( 2 ) acid baking , ( 3 ) leaching , and ( 4) solvent extraction of thorium , using a primary alkylamine , and yttrium , using di - 2 - ethylhexyl phosphoric acid . About 95 pct of the contained thorium and yttrium was recovered from ore containing 1.2 pct Th02 and 0.5 pct Y₂ 03. The thoria product was 99 pct Tho ; the yttria product was 77 pct Y₂ 03. A 150 - to - 1 concentration ratio was effected on the latter , but some contaminating lanthanon - group oxides remained .

In an effort to decrease noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in coal preparation plant employees, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conduct­ing research to identify and control dominant noise sources in vibrating screen (VS) machines. To this end, acoustic measurements of the noise radiated by a dewatering VS were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) using microphone phased-array technology. These measurements allowed for the identification of the screen as the dominant source in the 250 Hz 1/3-octave band. The sidewalls are the major contributors in the 315 and 400 Hz bands, whereas the eccentric mechanisms and the electric motor are the dominant sources in the 800 and 1,000 Hz bands, respectively.

Underground mining methods at the Gray mine of Tri-State Zinc, Inc., are of special interest because of the low unit costs achieved through use of jumbos and loading equipment mounted un crawler-type tracks and of diesel trucks that haul from the stoping areas to the mill through inclined adits. The operating company, Tri-State Zinc, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields American Development Co., Ltd., the latter being the American branch of New Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., a British-owned company.

Scale inhibitors and slow-release polymers were tested by the Bureau of Mines at mine drainage treatment facilities. The scale inhibitors were investigated to determine their effectiveness in controlling gypsum (CaSO4) scale; the polymers were investigated to determine their effectiveness for increasing settling rates of suspended iron hydroxide. Two types of scale inhibitors were tested at a site having a severe CaSO4 scaling problem. Both proved to be effective in controlling scale formation; in addition, one caused the dissolution of CaSO4 deposits. Slow-release polymers were tested at three mine drainage treatment facilities. These gelatinous polymeric flocculants were found to be convenient and easy to use, but only effective when pH could be controlled.

This report is based on data collected in and about the Liberty mine of the Liberty Fuel Co. by D. J. Parker and W. W. Kessler on December 13 and 14, 1933. An important phase of an examination to determine the general condition of a mine with respect to safety is the collection of dust samples from rock- dusted areas. Definite conclusions, based on intelligent interpretation of the analyses of such samples, can be reached only when the general condition of the mine is known. A similar examination and report were made on this property in January 1930 by D. J. Parker and R. I. C. Manning. Since that time much has been done by the management to improve safety conditions in this mine. The changes made will be noted in the course of this report. The mine is in Spring Canyon at Latuda, Carbon County, Utah, and is served by a branch line of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad about 7 miles long and connecting to the main line near Helper, Utah. The writer desires to express his sincere appreciation for the many courtesies and helpful cooperation extended by Superintendent George Schultz and Mine Foreman F. W. Koelling.

"This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a fluorite deposit near Vado, N. Mex. Results of trenching are given. Together with analyses made upon samples of the ore. The Federal Geological Survey3/ completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the summer of 1944. A Bureau engineer examined the deposit in August 1944. As a result of these investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves. Exploratory work was recommended to obtain information that might possibly lead to production from the property. Assistance was given the Bureau by the Geological Survey.A gasoline-powered air compressor, other equipment, and supplies were delivered to the property from January 20 to 25, 1943. Trenching began under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer on January 25, 1947, and ended on March 15, 1945. The results of trenching and sampling form he basis of this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IT is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, R.G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervisions of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. "The Phelps lease in Jasper County, Missouri, was first examined by the Bureau of Mines3/ in December 1943, at the request of Thomas Phelps of Joplin, the lessee. Owing to urgent war requirements for zinc and lead and evidence of favorable geological conditions and past productivity of adjoining properties, it,considered justifiable to explore for extensions of known ore deposits and possible undiscovered ones. In August 1944, funds were allotted for this work, which was started January 5, 1945, under the direction of the author.The provision of facilities and storage space on the property by the lessee during drilling operations is gratefully acknowledged.The Phelps lease is on land belonging to the Rex Mining & Smelting Co. It lies immediately southeast of the city limits of Joplin, Mo. It may be reached by going cast from Joplin on paved 20th street to half a mile beyond Range Line road. Twentieth street is the northern boundary line of the property, which consists of approximately 145 acres and includes the W 1/2, NE1/4, and all of the E ½. NW1/4 except 15 acres along the west side of that quarter section, of sec. 18, T. 27 N., R. 32 W., as shown on figure 1.The property is part of a 1,000-acre tract owned by the Rex Mining & Smelting Co., Paul D. Porter, president, Joplin, Mo. The lease was acquired by Thomas Phelps of Joplin, in 1937. At present the lease is controlled by a recently formed association known as the Eureka Products Co., Charles W. Madison, manager, Kansas City, Mo.Dependable skilled mine labor is scarce in the district at present, but there seems to be enough transient mine labor for small operations. The prevailing wages of the district run from 55 cents to 95 cents per hour for various types of mine labor.Living accommodations and markets to supply all domestic requirements are available in Joplin.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the and that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada's production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

Since 1982 standard calibration materials recommended for respirable crystalline silica analysis by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) P7 Infrared Method and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Analytical Method 7500 have undergone minor changes in size distribution. However, a critical assumption has been made that the crystalline silica in ambient mine atmosphere respirable dust samples has also remained essentially unchanged in particle size distribution. The objective of this work, therefore, is to compare recent particle size distributions of underground coal mine dust and the silica component of these dusts with estimated aerodynamic particle size distributions of calibration standard materials MIN-U-SIL 5, Berkeley 5, and SRM 1878 used by two crystalline silica analysis techniques. This work provides resolution to a previously reported discrepancy involving the proper sample dilution for the particle sizing method used. Dust impactor sampling data for various locations in 13 underground coal mines were collected between 1991 and 1998 and analyzed for the respirable mass median aerodynamic diameters. The data suggest that the MSHA P7 Method will underestimate the silica content of the sample by at most 8.5 % in the median size range of 0.9–3.6 µm and that it is unlikely one would obtain any significant error in the MSHA P7 Method analysis when the method uses Berkeley 5, MIN-U-SIL 5, or SRM 1878 as a calibration standard material. The results suggest that the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 would be more appropriate for a dust sample that is representative of the total (no cyclone classifier) rather than the respirable airborne dust, particularly since the mass fraction in the size range below 4 µm is usually a small percentage of the total airborne dust mass. However, the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 is likely to underestimate the silica content of an airborne respirable dust sample by only 5–10 %. The results of this study also suggest that any changes that may have occurred in the median respirable size of airborne coal mine dust are not significant enough to cause any appreciable error in the current methods used for respirable crystalline silica analysis.
