A study of the records on file in the Bureau of Mines reveals that moray fire in coal mines have been started by electrical equipment or circuits. There the fires were of undetermined origin, electricity often was Strongly suspected as the probable cause. While it is unfortunate that positive evidence as to the cause is so often lost in the general destruction resulting from fires, there are many lessons to be learned from fire s in which the origin was definitely established as electrical. For modern high-speed methods of producing coal, electrically operated machinery has become virtually indispensable underground. With increases in the amount of equipment it has not always been necessary to increase the number of circuits in the mine where direct current is mainly used, but it has been necessary to increase the carrying capacity of these circuits. For example, lends such as heavy-haulage units drawing 1,000 amperes or more have brought boat the introduction of 6/0 and "No. 9 section" trolley wires. This has not made the task of fire prevention any easier, for it has meant that circuit breakers s must be set so high that partial short circuits fail to open them, therefore an arc of considerable proportions can be maintained without causing the, beaker to open. Thus, if as fall of roof brought a trolley wire down against a loaded car of coal, an arc might be struck that would ignite they cowl without opening the circuit breaker.

The emphasis is on the measurement procedure and the interpretation of the measurement rather than on the instrument itself.] The failure to properly sample for methane is a major contributing factor to methane explosion risk. Sampling errors are most likely to occur at mines or tunnels where the presence of methane is not suspected or during nonroutine tasks at mines or tunnels known to have gas. More specific information on methane sampling at continuous miner sections is in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss sampling at longwall sections, and Chapter 14 discusses sampling at tunnels. METHANE DETECTORS FOR MINING Many models of gas detectors are available to measure methane concentrations, as well as most of the other contaminant gases found in mines and tunnels. An example is the iTX Multi-Gas Monitor, a portable gas detector available from Industrial Scientific Corp., Oakdale, PA. This handheld instrument measures several gases simultaneously. The cost (2004) ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on the number of gases measured. Similar instruments are available from other manufacturers. Most methane detectors used in mining use a catalytic heat of combustion sensor to detect methane and other combustible gases. These have been proven through many years of reliable operation. Electrical dewatering tests are described in which the laboratory cells were designed for continuous operation using an endless metal belt as the anode . The test slurries were dilute , containing from 2.5 to 14.4 percent solids (specific gravity of 1.02 to 1.10 ) that were all minus 8 microns in size . Recovery of the solids of low water content was the practical objective of the investigation . Process variables evaluated and reported are : The effect of feed rate , amount of electrolyte , samples from different sources , and the use of two cells in series . These variables are evaluated on the basis of yield of clay per kilowatt - hour , recovery , and the amount of solids in the deposited clay . Recovery , yield , and solid content of the belt anode product are interdependent , and changes that will improve one of these characteristics often are accomplished at the expense of the others . Tests in which recoveries range from 50 to 60 percent usually result in yields of 8 to 9 kilograms (kg ) of dry clay per kilowatt- hour (kwhr ) . Under these conditions , the solid content of the deposited clay approximates 50 percent . One test sample , composed of kaolinite , showed very high yield , 13 to 16 kg per kwhr ; high recovery , 53 to 58 percent ; and 52 to 54 percent solids in the cake .

"IntroductoryThe common practice of the petroleum industry is to measure viscosity by the use of instruments of the efflux or capillary tube type. The Saybolt universal viscosimeter has been tentatively adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials and is used extensively in the United States.Several instruments of foreign origin are also more or less familiar, such as the Redwood, the Engier, and the Baroey.Effina-type viscosimeters are well adapted to the ordinary needs of petroleum testing laberatories as they are simple and rugged in construction and away to manipulate, even in the hands of operators lacking scientific training. They have, however, certain limitations and for certain spacial types of work there are notable advantages incident to the use of the so-called torsion types of type of viacosimeter. The most satisfactory type of torsion viscosimeter now available in the market some to be that of MacMchael, which has been discussed in detail in a recent paper (Herschel, W. H., The MacMichael Torsional Viscosimeter. Jour. of Int. and Eng. Chem., vol. 12, 1920, pp. 282-286). The present paper indicates conditions under which this viscosimeter may be used to advantage in the petroleum laboratory, and outlines simple methods of operation and calibration."

The Cebolla Creek titaniferous iron deposits near Powderhorn in southern Gunnison County, Colo., were examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines as part of an overall program to investigate the Nation's titanium and iron resources. The deposits occur around the periphery of the Iron Hill stock, which underlies an area of about 12 square miles. Concentrations of magnetite, ilmenite, and perovskite arc localized along fractures in the pyroxenite stock. Mineralogical studies of composite surface samples collected in 1956 showed that most of the iron is present in ilmenite-bearing magnetite. Perovskite is the chief titanium mineral in the magnetite-rich and augite-rich types, and sphene is the principal titanium mineral in the placer material. The mica-rich rock contains approximately equal amounts of perovskite, ilmenite, and sphene.

Changes in the 1980 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1979, were of a mixed nature. Output of garnet and special silica stone products increased in both tonnage and value during the year, while emery and tripoli-type materials production decreased in both tonnage and value. The reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material-fused alumina and alumina-zirconia, silicon car-bidet and metallic iron and steel shot and grit-also decreased for 1980. In 2007, a total of 14,871 mining operations reported employment data to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Almost half (48.4%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (31.2%), coal mines (13.7%), nonmetal mines (4.9%), and metal mines (1.9%).

Real-world levels of attenuation from hearing protection devices are usually much lower than the rated values obtained under near-ideal circumstances. The shortfall is even more extreme for earplugs than it is for earmuffs, primarily because of the complicated process of fitting the plugs within the ear canal. This study examines the use of a commercially-available lubricant for hearing aids to determine whether it would facilitate improved fit and attenuation for earplugs. In this experiment, ten participants inserted earplugs with and without using the lubricant. Average attenuation was assessed with the Real-Ear-Attenuation-at-Threshold (REAT) technique, and showed over 5 dB improvement when the lubricant was used. Participants obtained an 85% mastery rate using the lubricant versus a 50% mastery rate without. These results indicate several possible applications for improved earplug performance in real-world settings where hazardous noise is unavoidable and effective hearing protection is necessary.

The transverse loading requirement for stoppings as specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations is 39 psf. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on arching has been developed to determine the true transverse load capacity of stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate rigid-arching of stoppings was developed and verified through full-scale in-mine tests. Using this protocol, a systematic study of the design parameters that affect arching capability in block stoppings was conducted. The study included a theoretical assessment of arching and development of design formulations that can accurately define the transverse load capacity of various stopping constructions under various loading conditions. This approach should lead to a safer mine environment by matching the transverse load capabilities of the stopping design to the requirements in the mine to ensure proper ventilation control is maintained.

The Melrose zinc-lead. deposit is in an area of structural disturbance of sedimentary rocks in the Melrose mining district in Cherokee County, Kans., 25 miles west of Joplin, Mo., adjacent to the northwest limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling in the Melrose district has been sporadic and. very limited, largely due to the high cost of exploration through great thicknesses of barren rock, 350 to 440 feet overlying the ore deposits. No mining has ever been done on the Melrose zinc-lead tract, but it has been drilled extensively. The drill-hole logy indicate extensive structural deformation, silicification, and zinc-lead deposits in the Boone limestone-chert formations of the Mississippian series, which is overlain by thick-bedded Pennsylvanian shale and sandstone. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate the ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with no evident oxidation. During the period from November 2, 1949, to March 13, 1950, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 23 holes aggregating 10,405 feet of bore. Factual data on the investigation and logs of holes drilled by private parties and the Bureau of Mines are presented in this report.

This paper describing the methods and costs of milling scheelite ore at the Silver Dike concentrator of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. In the Silver Dike mill tungsten ore which contains about 1 per cent of scheelite is treated at the maximum rate of 45 tens per 24 hours by tabling followed by magnetic separators to clean the table concentrates. Unusually high-grade concentrates are produced which average between 70 and 75 per cent of W03.

Two degasification test boreholes were drilled to depths of 1,238 and 1,212 feet on Bureau of Mines property at Bruceton, Pa., as part of the Bureau's long-range coal degasification program. The holes provided detailed geologic information and geologic sections, which were correlated with regional stratigraphic cross sections prepared by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Gas content determinations and coal analyses were made on the Upper Freeport, Middle Kittanning, Clarion, Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds; gas content of the coalbeds ranged from 53 to 165 cubic feet per ton. Formation pressure and gas flow tests were conducted on selected coalbed intervals in borehole 1; formation pressures ranged from 292 to 473 psig. The middle Kittanning coalbed was hydraulically stimulated using very heavy gelled water, but gas production remained low because gel residue and formation water inhibited the flow of gas. Gas contents in the Clarion, Upper Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds were anomalously low owing to the proximity of porous sand-stones which act as reservoirs for gas migrating from coalbeds.

Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Footnote references serve to guide the reader to more detailed information.

"The use of small such as canaries and white mice, for detecting carbon monoxide depends primarily on the fact that the volume of respiration of these animals in proportion to their volume of blood is much higher than for man. Accordingly, when animals and men are simultaneously exposed to a given concentration of carbon monoxide the animals will absorb it more rapidly and attain serious poisoning in less time than men. Prom a practical viewpoint the use of the animals depends on the margin of time between observable symptoms in them and serious poisoning in man, during which man can return to fresh air or use respiratory protection. It should be remembered, however, that during the time the animal is incurring a detectable degree of poisoning, man is also absorbing some carbon monoxide, and the margin of time is not very wide. Experience with canaries has shown that an occasional specimen may have a tolerance above the average of the species and fail to exhibit symptoms before man incurs a very discomforting and possibly a serious degree of poisoning.It is also well known that physical activity increases the demand for oxygen by the body, and the respiratory exchange and circulation of the blood are increased to meet the demand. This sets up a vicious condition if carbon monoxide is present in the air because the rate of absorption of carbon monoxide is not only increased by the increase in respiration and circulation, but the absorption of carbon monoxide decreases the capacity of the blood for carrying oxygen at a time when the demand is high. These facts, together with the increase in respiration and circulation which attend excitement, underlie the caution to be calm and to walk slowly and to reduce physical exertion to a minimum when exposed to carbon monoxide. For these same reasons, when using animals for detecting carbon monoxide it is endeavored to keep them active, thereby tending to increase the response of the birds and widen the time between observable effects in the birds and effects in the man. As rule canaries are kept fairly active through fright at the unnatural surroundings and in their endeavor to remain on the perch of the cage when carried into the atmosphere to be examined. They also experience an excitement stage with oncoming carbon monoxide poisoning. Sometimes, however, especially if the air is cold, they tend to be inactive and quiet. Ordinary mice and white mice become inactive with use and also with oncoming poisoning. They huddle in the corner or the cage, and thereby not only reduce their sensitivity but make it difficult to observe signs of poisoning."

The removal of the mud sheaths that are deposited against the faces of productive oil sands during rotary drilling is one of the important problems confronting operators, especially in semidepleted fields where formation pressures are low. Unless the mud sheaths behind the perforated oil strings and, liners are removed and the sands exposed, oil cannot enter the wells. Consequently much oil that otherwise eight be produced from low-pressure sands is trapped and never recovered. Various types of perforation washers, down swabs, and agitators are used at present for breaking down the mud sheaths and. removing the disintegrated clay particles from wells after the perforated pipes have been inserted. Mechanical methods for removing mud sheaths are quite satisfactory, but prompted by tie request of certain operators in the California oil fields Bureau of Mines engineers have conducted a series of laboratory tests with the view of developing a chemical method for removing mud sheaths in oil wells that will be applicable to field conditions.

Solutions containing Cr6+ and sulfuric acid are used in a number of surface-finishing operations. Substantial quantities of chromium and copper are lost and pollution problems are created when the spent solutions are discarded. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving secondary resource recovery technology, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to detoxify and recover metals from these solutions. Spent etchants are treated to remove copper and reduce Cr6+ to Cr 3+ in an electrolytic cell. The anodes and cathodes are granulated coke. The spent solution is continuously pumped through the electrodes. Hexavalent chromium is reduced to trivalent chromium, and copper is recovered at the cathode. Reoxidation of Cr3+ at the anode was not observed. The removal and recovery of copper reduction of Cr6+ lessen chemical demand and increase efficiency in waste in treatment operations associated with the use of these solutions.

Data are presented on the characteristics of lignites with emphasis on the composition and fusion properties of the ash. Differences in the analyses of commercial-grade lignites are related primarily to variations in moisture and ash contents. Lignite ash is generally characterized by high concentra¬tions of alkaline earth oxides and a greater tendency for retention of sulfur in the ash than higher-rank coals. Composition of ash varies significantly within and between mines. The differences within mines are significant for short distances and may be eliminated under certain circumstances by normal mixing occurring during mining. The sulfur in lignite averages 0.6 percent and is found primarily in the organic or pyritic forms with only a trace of the sulfate. During the stan¬dard laboratory asking procedures, from 60 to 100 percent of the original sul¬fur is retained in the lignite ash. Trace elements, such as uranium and germanium, in the ash from commercial¬-grade lignites are present in low concentrations, but others, primarily copper and silver, are present in specific samples in concentrations approaching those found in some commercial ores.

This report describes the laboratory work and deals generally with a chemical method for removing the mud sheath, cake, or plaster deposited against the face of oil sands in drilling wells end in wells that, on being shut in temporarily during periods of overproduction of oil, are conditioned for the shutdown .period by filling the well opposite the producing formations with mud fluid. The method described in this report was devised in the San Francisco laboratory of the Bureau of Mines and, as far as the writers have been able to determine, differs from any chemical method ever used in actual wells. The method proposes to add a small amount of calcium carbonate (preferably pulverized limestone) to the mud fluids before they are introduced into the wells so that the resultant mud sheaths will be susceptible to disintegration by acid solutions when it is desired to expose the faces of the oil sands in the wells.

"INTRODUCTION The ti taniferous-iron deposits in the Iron Mountain area of the Laramie Range, and particularly the Shanton deposit, were examined by several engineers. 3/ of the Bureau of Mines during 1942, 1943, and 1944. A dip-needle survey also was made early in 1945. 4/ Interest in this property has increased as a result of the exploratory work completed by the Bureau in 1944 on the Iron Mountain deposit, 6 miles northeast of the Shanton property.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy.
