This paper describes the methods and costs of deepening the 3-compartment underground shaft in the Hooper Tunnel adit at the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Company Crescent mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining region, 7 miles east of Kellogg, Shoshone County, Idaho. The work was done with the aid of a Defense Minerals Exploration Administration contract (No. Idm-E493, Docket No. DMEA-2764). Preparation for deepening the shaft was begun March 26, 1953, and sinking was completed May 27, 1954. The shaft, bottomed at 1,275.5 feet in 1939, was deepened to 3,276 feet, using mechanical mucking and intermediate pockets. A total of 50,349 man-hours was required to complete the work of sinking 2,000.5 feet, cutting 7 pump stations, and driving 2 pocket raises. The rate of advance was 7.1 feet of shaft per operating day, or 8.4 feet per day of actual sinking. The total direct cost for sinking was $205.20 per foot.

The technical feasibility of gasifying powdered, noncoking, low-rank coal with steam in an externally heated tube has been demonstrated. The tube, 112 ft. of alloy-steel tubing shaped into a helix, served as an electrical conductor of electricity used for heating. The effects of the following variables were studied: Residence time of coal in reactor, average reaction temperature, steam concentration, and rank or geologic age of coal. Reaction pressure was maintained in the range 19-26 p.s.i.a. High carbon conversions and large yields of synthesis gas were obtained with low-rank coal. In one test, for example, about 88 pct. of the carbon in a subbituminous C coal was gasified at 1,910* F. with a residence time of 1 sec. The gas contained 58 pct. H2, 19 COD 15 CO, and 3 CH4; the yield was 30 cu. ft. (at 32' F. and 14.7 p.s.i.) of synthesis gas (CO + H2) per pound of dry coal.

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .

NIOSH has recently completed a study of the interaction between polyurethane (PUR) and coal mine roof in order to determine the mechanism of reinforcement, in both highly fractured rock and unfractured rock. Four case studies of PUR rein­forcement are presented. At a West Virginia site, a borehole camera revealed the location of roof voids and guided the PUR injection. By injecting polyure­thane into a zone from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2?6 ft.) high in the roof, a roof beam was created and ongoing intersection falls were halted. In another highly fractured roof in a western Pennsylvania mine, a total of 5.8 cm (2.3 in.) of rubbleized rock was found in a zone up to 3 m (10 ft.) into the roof. Untargeted PUR injection filled approximately 1/2 of the fractures. These two case studies showed that it is not necessary to fill up 100% of the void space to create stability. In the other two field sites, polyurethane was injected into weak, but unfractured roof. Post-injec­tion video monitoring showed that weak bedding planes were hydraulically wedged open and polyure­thane injected along bedding. The reinforcement value of this injection method is limited because of the wafer-thin layer of PUR introduced along bedding, and the lack of a PUR ??webbing?? which would serve as a structural framework to provide strength. It was determined that video inspection prior to PUR injection can aid in identifying the fracture zones to target, and minimize ??blind?? pumping and loss of PUR.

As a part of a larger study of the distribution of metals within ore deposits, the geometry of distribution of gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc in five veins of the Fresnillo mine, Zacatecas, Mexico, was established. The purpose was to obtain basic data necessary for evaluation of geological theories about processes of vein formation and useful for practical mining applications in ore estimation and prediction of ore beyond present workings. The Bureau of Mines investigation comprised statistical analysis of 64,000 assay values from some 16,000 mine samples. The samples were taken at 2-meter intervals in drifts exposing the veins through a vertical range of some 750 meters. Within individual veins, the metals are distributed in dome¬like patterns with highest metal contents tending Lo occur in oreshoots at the centers of the developed parts of the veins. However, in the block of ground containing all five veins, base metals define mathematical domes with highest contents near the center; precious metals define mathematical basins or troughs with low contents near the center. The ratio of silver assay values to lead assay values corresponds to two geographically distinct types of mineralization: one in which silver is closely related to lead, and another in which silver is independent of lead. Other metal ratios also vary regularly from one place to another. The statistical methods employed in this study would be useful for other geologists or engineers who need to analyze large amounts of assay or similar numerical data.

Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). The surge in gold and silver prices during the 1970's attracted many new mining operators and has rekindled interest among experienced ones. With its low capital investment requirements and fast payout, leaching has attracted many operators--particularly those with small or low- grade deposits. Although in certain situations leaching offers many advantages over conventional mining methods, many operators are uncertain how these relatively new techniques should be implemented. Consequently the Bureau of Mines has prepared this circular to disseminate information on gold and silver leaching practices, techniques, and problem. Engineering data gathered from 26 operations indicate that most ores are leached in heaps following crushing and distribution on pads. Metal values are recovered from cyanide leach solutions using either zinc precipitation or charcoal adsorption. Potential problems that my hamper on block development of a leaching operation are poor percolation characteristics of the ore, calcium salt buildup, low temperatures, and solution losses. Mineral production in Fiji, a group of 322 volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, continued to be dominated by gold. However, the Fijian mineral sector remained a minor factor as a source of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment, generating only 1% of the gross domestic product (GDP), estimated as $1.2 billion.2 The largest and most important mining operation was the Vatukoula gold mine on the north side of Viti Levu, the main island. The Vatukoula Mine has been in prduction since 1932, producing about 3.8 million troy ounces of gold and 1.3 million troy ounces of silver to date. In April 1983, the large Australian mining firm, Western Mining Corp. (WMC), assumed operation of the mine in a joint venture with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., which operated the mine previously. The WMC takeover of the mine management was expected to bring in additional capital and technological expertise in order to modernize operations, increasing both efficiency and output. During the year, rate of recovery was only about 75% of the gold contained in the ore and only 40% of the contained silver. Mining at the Vatukoula Mine was done using bath opencut and underground methods, with about 60% of the ore mined attributed to the underground operations.

The Bureau of Mines conducted seven pioneering experiments in a 12-inch-diameter Kroll reduction reactor to examine the feasibility of coreducing the chlorides of Ti, AI, and V to produce a homogeneous titanium alloy sponge. The coreduction studies proceeded in a normal manner, and the yields of sponge were comparable with those of pure titanium sponge made in the same reactor. Vanadium concentration was very uniform throughout the sponge cake when VC14 in solution in TiCl4 was fed into the molten magnesium. More difficulty was encountered in feeding solid VCl2 and AIC13. Vanadium and aluminum concentration in the sponge was not uniform, and mechanical difficulties were experienced with the small-scale screw feeder. Although the sponge varied in composition from region to region, the ingots prepared from it were uniform in composition.

"INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1942 a series of magnetometer surveys on deposits of black sand underlying Pleistocene raised marine terraces along the coast of southwestern Oregon was nada by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. A few preliminary tests had been made in the same area in May 1940 and December 1941.The sands contain fine gold and metals of the platinum group, and, beginning in 1852, extensive, but spasmodic mining and exploration have been done for these precious metals. There are many old placer, mines and prospects, although for the most part the yield of the metals has been small. The sands also contain other minerals of potential value, including ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, zircon, and particularly chromite, and the wartime demand for domestic chromite resulted in extensive testing and development of the known deposits. The purpose of the magnetometer surveys was to determine the efficacy of, magnetic methods in tracing and outlining these known deposits and in prospecting for new ones. The field work was done between March 17 and May 29, 1942, by the author assisted by W.W. Paulsen of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries."

This paper is a preliminary report of the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-second semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A more detailed discussion of the whole survey is in preparation and will be published as a companion, report. The second paper, in addition to giving a more complete summary of the data included in this report, will present results of the determination of copper-strip core lion (method 530.22), color (method 10.11), sulphur content (method 520.11) evaporation residue (method 530.1), and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam oven method.9 The retail price at the time the sample was taken and tax will also be stated for each sample. The present paper deals specifically with data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation. It has been the feeling of some investigators that the practice, followed in previous semiannual surveys, of grouping all types of motor fuel together without discriminating between "competitive price gasoline," benzol blends, Ethyl gasoline, "high-test" fuels, etc., has detracted from their usefulness because the data did not permit drawing conclusions in regard to any one type of fuel, and tended to obscure differences between fuels of the various types. Therefore, in order to remedy this condition, the samples of the present survey have been divided into two groups; one called "competitive-price gasoline" and a second group called "premium-price motor fuels."

The Bureau of Mines compared the effects of surface-active chemicals with those of pure water on core-drilling rock and quartz and on fracturing quartz. The objectives were to determine if these chemicals assist drilling and fracturing rock and if zeta potential control was worth pursuing as an aid to full-scale drilling. All tests were performed in the laboratory. No significant increases in drilling rates were observed for 1 to 10,000 ppm Al (as AlC13) in flushing water when drilling microcline or serpentine, nor for 1 to 10,000 ppm Mg (as MgC12) when drilling microcline or marble. Concentrations near those giving a zero zeta potential were used with microcline and marble. A 50-pct rate increase was observed for drilling quartz in 0.7 ppm oleylammonium acetate, which gave a zero zeta potential. No other concentrations were used. No effect on the tensile strength of quartz thread in 0.05 ppm Al (as AlC13), which gave a zero zeta potential, was observed. Heptanol, reported to give a zero zeta potential on quartz, did not reduce the bending strength of small quartz bars below that in water. These generally negative findings raise doubt about the usefulness of zeta potential control in full-scale drilling. The results, combined with previous studies, suggest that controlling physical properties of drilling fluids, such as viscosity, is more useful than altering chemical properties.

This report describes the timed release analysis technique that was developed to serve as a tool for assessing the froth flotation cleaning potentials of fine-size coals. Using this developed technique, 16 coals from 10 different coalbeds were tested. All of the coals included in this study were quite amenable to froth flotation with float coal yields ranging from 80.7 to 99.5 percentage points. Float-and-sink analyses of the coals tested are shown to be of limited value in predicting froth flotation cleaning potential. Generally the float-and-sink analyses indicated a better product could be obtained than froth flotation could provide; although, in four of the coals tested froth flotation results were superior to those expected from the gravimetric analysis. The fixed carbon content of the samples collected was found to correlate with the floatability of the coals. The higher rank coals were the most readily floatable coals while the lower rank coals did not respond quite as well to flotation.

The greatest hazard of early mining was from explosions of methane ignited by open lights . With the advent of safety lamps and forced ventilation this hazard was greatly reduced until the application of electricity to modern mining not only multiplied the sources of gas ignition but the accompanying , machines and haulage systems increased the amount of explosive dust , through which a methane explosion is more liable to become a major mine disaster , and thus greatly furthered the need of adequate ventilation to keep down the concentrations of methane . Adequate ventilation is still the best preventive of such explosions . However , even with a well laid out and controlled ventilating system the amount of air passing through entries and rooms is liable to vary within wide limits because of open doors , falls of rock , or other accidental causes . The percentages of methane under normal conditions should therefore be kept so small that they will not be increased to explosive proportions by short interruptions in ventilation . Mine ventilation and methane detection are inseparable safety precautions . The increasing importance of ventilation necessitates more accurato determinations of the methane concentrations throughout the mines . This paper discusses in detail some of the steps in the development of methane detection and specially notes the more accurate detectors now available . One of the earliest means of detecting methane was by a candle . About 1835 , John Buddle , Sr. , a noted mining man of his period , when questioned by a Parliamentary Committee as to the safety of using candles , replied :

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) research simplified an earlier hydrogen chloride (HCI) leach-sparge process developed by the USBM to recover reduction-grade alumina from domestic kaolin clay. Improvements were made by decreasing the initial leaching acid concentration from 25 to 20 pet, decreasing the leaching time from 1 to 2 h to 15 to 30 min, eliminating the solvent extraction step for Fe removal, and eliminating the step to recover the AI content of the bleedstream circuit. A 10-cycle bench-scale experiment of the simplified process showed that the ferric chloride (FeC13) concentration built up to 9.3 g/L in the recycle stream. This did not interfere with any of the unit operations or final alumina product purity because Fe forms stable soluble chloride complexes when sparged with HCI and is easily washed from the large aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) crystals. The reduced leaching time and acid concentration did not decrease Al extraction.

Mining injury statistics show that a significant number of back, neck, and head injuries are linked to exposure from vehicle vibration. Use of a suspension seat is a common way to isolate the vehicle operator from the adverse effects of vibration exposure. Thus, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 – Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH – PRL) performed laboratory studies on four passive and two semi-active seat suspension designs. These are typical of seat suspensions commonly found on large off-road heavy surface mining, construction and agricultural vehicles as either replacement or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) systems. One included a pneumatic (air bladder) spring mechanism. The fifth and sixth suspensions were a NIOSH magnetorheological (MR) semi-active damper design based on the pneumatic (air bladder) and one of the coil spring suspensions above. These suspensions were modified with a commercially available MR damper substituted for the OEM damper. These six seat suspension systems were tested and analyzed, for vertical vibration only, using the ISO 5007 Standard [1]. This paper describes the laboratory vibration tests using a MTS® shaker table and discusses the results obtained for the different suspension designs and highlights the rheonetic technology studied. Implications of the seat suspension designs relative to their capabilities for isolating vehicle operators from vibration exposure are discussed. Results for suspensions 1 through 3 showed frequencies of isolation from 2.1 to 3.0 Hz using the 40-kg (88-lb) mass and from 1.65 Hz to 1.8 Hz using the 80-kg (176-lb) mass. Suspension #4, in tests with only the 80-kg (176-lb) mass, showed an isolation frequency of 3.7 Hz. With the MR damper added to seat suspension #4, the peak transmissibility was lowered from 1.3 to 0.95 and showed a corresponding downward shift in frequency from 2.25 Hz to 1.4 Hz. In fact, the results for suspension #5 (the MR damper added to seat suspension #4), using test #3 conditions of the programmed control algorithm, showed isolation (attenuation of transmitted vibration) throughout the test frequency range from 1.0 to 6.0 Hz.
