An impure variety of barite, which lends itself well to the manufacture of heavy drilling mud for oil wells, is widely distributed throughout the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas. The ore mined in the area and used for drilling muds usually contains an average of 67 percent barium sulfate, although ores as low as 50 percent BaSO4 are occasionally used. Due to the increased demand for barite for drilling caused by the intense search for hew oil occurrences during the years 1945 and 1946, the Federal Bureau of Mines began an investigation of barite deposits in the Ouachita? Mountains in October 1946. In all, 10 barite deposits were examined, trenched, sampled, and studied during the investigation, which was terminated in May 1947.

Metal-mine fires in the United States are not of frequent occurrence and relatively for of those that do occur result in loss of life, although many cause heavy property loss or are costly to extinguish. Over a span of years, however, more lives are lost in metal Trines from fires than from any other of the untoward occurrences which afflict metal mining, such as electrical storms, floods, cave-ins, magazine explosions, or strikes. In perhaps more than 90 per cent of the fires. in metal mines' there is no loss of life; hence, the general public, even the general mining public, seldom hears of these fires, though the property loss frequently reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars; on the other end, in some instances the property damage from an underground metal-mine, fire has been negligible and the loss of life comparatively high. In any comprehensive study of metal-mine fires, ventilation is certain to be found a vital factor. The influence of ventilation on fires and the influence of fires on ventilation are of vital importance. In metal-mine fires very few persons meet death from actual contact Pith heat or flame; nearly all fatalities are duo to asphyxiation or suffocation. A well-planned, well-installed, and well-operated mechanical ventilation system is unquestionably one of the best available present-day protections from loss of life and property in case of fire in a metal mine; that this is true is attested by the usual helplessness of mining officials in trying to handled underground fires in a mine that has not had the foresight to install mechanical equipment to control underground air flow. On the other hand, the establishment of high-velocity air currents without sufficient day by day attention to such details as the method of coursing, or controlling, or confining them most certainly tends to increase dangers from fires rather than to aid in the avoidance or elimination of these dangers; the truth of this latter statement is shown by the fact that the greatest, loss of life in metal-mine fires during the past 20 years has been in relatively well-ventilated workings, and in every case the life loss has been due to some more or less trivial or easily remedied defect in the Ventilating system - usually a defect that has had some reference to doors used or supposed to be used to deflect or control air currents.

Ground quartzite, known in the industry as amorphous silica, is produced from a quartzite deposit near Honey Brook, Pa., by George F. Pettinos, Inc., of Bala-Cynwyd, Pa. The quartzite is mined by the open pit method and processed in a mill at the mine. The operation regularly produces five standard grades of sand and one grade of crushed stone; however, the company accepts special orders and will produce material to meet the customer's specifications. Beneficiation (chiefly crushing and screening) is controlled by laboratory screen tests on samples taken during preparation of the sand. The chief uses of the sand are for foundry operations, furnace lining, concrete aggregate, and other specialized uses. The quartzite in this deposit is of uniform composition and does not require control by chemical analysis. However, for special purposes, analysis will be furnished.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Kanawha County , W. Va . It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke , either as mined or after beneficiation . Almost 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Kanawha County , W. Va . , in 1959 , of which about 67 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants . It has been estimated that more than 5,505 million tons remain in the county . Samples were collected from Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , Winifrede , Cedar Grove , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , Coalburg , Powellton , Eagle A , No. 2 Gas , and the Lower Kittanning beds . These beds were selected by the Bureau based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves . Float - and - sink tests of the samples collected from Eagle A , Peerless , Cedar Grove , Winifrede , and No. 2 Gas beds show that these coals at one location each are suitable for metallurgical use without washing . Lower Kittanning bed at four locations ; Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , and No. 2 Gas beds at two locations each ; and Coalburg , Powellton , Winifrede , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , and Cedar Grove beds at one location each can be upgraded to metallurgical quality by mechanical cleaning . Crushing the samples to 3/ 8- inch top size increased yields substantially at 1.30 specific gravity of Pittsburgh ( 17.5 percentage points ) and Upper Kittanning ( 13.0 percentage points ) beds and increased yield for the other beds sampled to a lesser amount . At this specific gravity , finer crushing caused In the 1.58 specific gravity float a general decrease in ash and sulfur . fractions of the other samples tested , most of the yields , and ash and sulfur contents , were lowered slightly by finer crushing .

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. In 1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 yr; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. coal mining workforce from March through September 1986. A companion report, Information Circular (IC) 9193, "Characterization of the 1935 Metal and Nonmetal Mining Workforce:' provides similar information for the U.S metal and nonmetal mining industry.

This paper describing the concentrator practice of the Montana Mines Corporation at Helena. Mont., is one of a series of articles on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Spring Hill mine and mill are located 4 miles south and west of Helena, Mont., near the head of Grizzly Gulch. The mine portal is on the east slope of the gulch, and the mill is directly opposite on the west slope. Grizzly Gulch is one of the tyro gulches which unite at the south end of Helena to form Last Chance Gulch, on which the main street of Helena is built.

The objectives of this research were to determine the practicability of using cobalt as a means of controlling the amount of ferrite in the micro-structures of semiaustenitic stainless steels, and to determine the effects of reduced ferrite content on mechanical properties of these steels. Cobalt additions of up to 3 weight-percent were made to type 17-7 PH2 (AISI 631) stainless steel. Ferrite contents were determined for alloys in the aged condition, and for alloys quenched from the hot working temperature. Ferrite can be completely eliminated from the microstructure of 17-7 PH stainless steel by additions of cobalt, but complete elimination of the ferrite phase results in lower tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. Tensile properties, hardness, and impact strength were determined for aged material. A subzero temperature treatment before heattreating was necessary to obtain maximum strength in the alloys containing cobalt. Addition of 2 weight-percent cobalt enhances mechanical properties of 17-7 PH stainless steel.

Their purpose is to focus the attention of the coal-mining industry on the most - common source of fatalities and injuries in mining coal and to disseminate information that may be helpful in combating the roof - fall hazard . Inasmuch as approximately 85 percent of roof - fall accidents occur in the face region , the importance of analyzing the accident - producing aspects of methods of roof support at the face or lack of method overemphasized . - - cannot be This circular is not intended to be an exhaustive treatise on methods of roof support in face regions but rather is a description of several methods of support that appear to offer distinct advantages with respect to safety and efficient operation .

The development of glass-making industries in the Pacific Northwest as well as other industries that use pure silica has been retarded by lack of local supplies of low-cost raw material. Several quartz deposits along the Skagit River constitute the only known source of relatively pure silica within the range of cheap transportation to the Seattle industrial area. Although some silica has been mined from these deposits, very little information regarding their size, grade, and other physical characteristics has been available to the general public. As a part of its program of investigation of the mineral resources of the Pacific Northwest, the Bureau of Mines assigned the writer to examine the Skagit River silica deposits in October 1946. This report presents the factual data obtained from an examination of the so-called Stoner, Bacon Creek, and Pressentin deposits. These deposits are the largest and most easily accessible known to exist in the area. The deposits are near Marblemount, which is on State Highway 17A. They are within 1 mile to 1-1/2 miles of the Skagit. River Railway, which provides transportation to Seattle, a distance of 130 miles. None of the deposits has been developed thoroughly. The Stoner deposit, however, has been developed by a quarry about, 5,0 feet square and has been exposed by hydraulic removal of the overburden throughout a distance of 180 feet along the hanging wall of the vein

Square Butte has no history of mineral development or production. Surface mapping, radiometric surveys and chemical analyses of rock samples reveal no mineral potential. The area has a speculative potential for petroleum and natural gas. INTRODUCTION The Square Butte Instant Wilderness Study Area, in Chouteau County, Montana, consists of 1,946 acres (788 ha) about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fort Benton and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Lewistown (fig. 1). This study was performed under provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is responsible for regional geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which determines the mineral potential of existing mines, prospects, or mineralized areas.

As potash is more necessary to the agricultural economy of the United States now than ever before it is gratifying to find that the virtual stoppage of imports from Germany in late 1939 caused none of the anxious foreboding that gripped American farmers in 1914. For long decades this country, in common with tie rest of the world, depended upon German potash, but today our expanded needs can be mot from domestic sources. The present armed conflict in Europe, like that of 1914, disrupted a world monopoly, but the cartel that in recent years controlled 90 percent of the world output (see fig, 1) was an international syndicate comprising French, Polish, and Spanish as well as German producers and having reported sales agreements covering production in the U. S. S. R. and Palestine. The break-up of these commercial agreements has necessitated readjustments but generates no such alarm as the closing of a single source of supply. In striking contrast to the critical shortage that developed a quarter century ago, no increase in prices has occurred or is anticipated in the domestic market.

This report presents a detailed study of low temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of an Australian coking coal. The coal studied was high-volatile B bituminous from the Foybrook mine, an open-cut operation in the Liddell seam, New South Wales, Australia. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, continuous vertical reactor at several temperatures from 960° to 1,300° F. It was demonstrated that this bituminous coal can be carbonized within this temperature range to produce tar and a nonagglomerated char, without prior oxidation or char recirculation. Carbonization rates from 138 to 287 lb/hr (as-carbonized basis) were investigated. It was found that the carbonization temperature and the air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values to insure continuous operation. At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coa1 ratios, part of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. On the moisture-and ash-free basis, the yield of tar plus light oil ranged from about 26 to 44 gallons per ton, and the char yield ranged from approximately 1,160 to 1,370 pounds per ton. The heat in the gas ranged from about 900 to 3,000 Btu/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal. Carbonization product yields correlated well with air-to-coal ratio and carbonization temperatures. The volatile matter in the char was found to be temperature dependent. At 1,300° F carbonization, the volatile matter in the char was 8.7 percent (dry basis), whereas at 9600 F carbonization, the residual volatile matter was about 16 to 18 percent (dry basis).

Bureau of Mines Research has demonstrated that it is technically feasible to segregate oxidized copper ores by use of a direct-fired, refractory-lined rotary kiln. Previously, the segregation process had been effected only in much more complicated indirect-fired, stainless steel kilns, The method comprises heating crushed ore premixed with small quantities of salt and carbonaceous material, such as coke, to about 830° C to produce copper as fine flake and metallic films on the surface of the coke particles. After grinding of the cooled furnace calcines, the copper is recovered by conventional flotation. During direct-fired segregation it was necessary to closely control the air-gas mixture in the burner. Good copper recoveries were obtained only when adding air in the limited range of 1.15 to 1.2 times the theoretical amount required for combustion of the natural gas. Batch trials of the new technique on quartzite-, limestone-, sandstone-, and limonite-type oxidized copper ores containing from 1.4 to 6.2 percent copper yielded flotation concentrates containing from 3.7 to 45 percent copper, representing 84 to 95 percent recoveries. Analyses of the furnace gases showed that loss of copper by volatilization was negligible. The preliminary direct-firing segregation studies were complemented by continuous runs on the quartzite ore, containing 1.4 percent copper, in an integrated segregation-flotation pilot plant having a 60 pound-per-hour capacity. In a typical test, 84 percent of the copper was recovered in a cleaner flotation product containing 25 percent copper. The study will be continued to further delineate the conditions for good segregation as effective use of standard ceramic-lined kilns will render the process more attractive from a commercial standpoint.

Solid-state equipment offers a number of potential advantages in the coal mining industry. These advantages can only be realized, however, through careful and judicious design of the control and protection circuitry. Problems relating to the interaction of solid-state equipment on the electrical system and the special design considerations which apply to solid-state circuitry are examined. Design guidelines are provided for solid-state applications in the areas of: (a) equipment operated from a DC trolley wire, (b) drive systems for surface mining equipment, (c) AC motor starters, and (d) electromagnetic interference.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study of cyanide leach technology used in Alaska's mineral industry from 1987 through 1990. Literature and cost data were obtained for mines in the contiguous United States, Canada, and Alaska that use cyanide to recover gold and silver. The data was compiled in an effort to evaluate the economics and conditions associated with cyanide use in Alaska. This report discusses heap leaching methodology and evaluates a "typical" heap leach operation in Nevada and compares the results of the Nevada operation to an analogous hypothetical mine in Interior Alaska. Five daily tonnage rates were analyzed for both the Nevada and the Alaska operations to evaluate the spectrum of economic possibilities. The discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) for each production rate was then evaluated in terms of recoverable metal value (RMV). The Nevada RMV for each production rate was then compared with its Alaskan counterpart, and the results averaged. The Alaskan production costs are an average of 1.71 times greater than costs associated with mining in Nevada at a 0% DCFROR. At 15% DCFROR, costs in Alaska are 2.01 times greater than those in Nevada. Costs are higher in Alaska because of the shorter leaching season, increased labor and transportation costs, and heavier precipitation and vegetation.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. The inspections and tests are designed to insure that each equipment satisfies the minimum requirements for safety in use. Bulk density tests were made on a Western U.S. coke oven plant blend to obtain bulk density control data that would be directly transferable to plant practice . Maximum bulk density values were obtained at zero surface moisture . Increase in surface moisture to about 6 percent decreased the bulk density to a minimum value . Increase in the fine grinding of the blend , at constant surface moisture , decreased the bulk density . The effect of oil on bulk density was observed with five oils at concentrations ranging from 1/8 to 1-1 / 2 gallons per ton . Maximum bulk densities were obtained within the 1 / 2- to 1 - gallon - per - ton range . Essentially the same bulk densities were obtained with petrolatum- and nonpetrolatum- containing oils . Storage effects were observed on samples tested at selected intervals from 0 to 56 days . No significant change in bulk density took place if no surface moisture was lost during storage .
