A method for destroying the caking properties of bituminous coal was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Coal is treated in a fixed bed by heating through its plastic range under controlled temperatures in mildly oxidative atmospheres composed of inert gas and/or steam containing about 1 volume-percent oxygen. High-volatile A (hvab) and high-volatile B (hvbb) and low-volatile bituminous (lvb) coals in the size range 1/8 to 1-1/2 inches were successfully treated at 0 (atmospheric pressure) to 300 psig in static beds 6 to 18 inches deep. Conditions of treatment depended on the coal and ranged from 80 to 200 minutes at 350° to 510° C. Char produced in this manner from hvab coal was gasified with steam at 800° C and 100 psig in a fixed bed in one series of tests and in other tests was exposed to hydrogen in a dilute co current free-falling-bed system at 750° C and 3,000 psig without agglomerating.

The Torpedo Copper mine in the Organ Mining District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered In 1899. Production was begun immediately and continued until 1907. Since 1907 very little ore has been produced, although Many individuals and companies have been interested in the property at one time or another. Approximately 6,621 feet of diamond-core had been completed on the property before 1949. The results from some of this drilling were unsatisfactory because of the poor core recovery. In addition to its investigation of the Torpedo ore deposits, attention was given by the Bureau of Mines to obtaining better core recovery through the use of special equipment and techniques. This project was begun October 3, 1949, and was completed April 30, 1950. Four diamond-drill holes totaling 2,140.5 feet, which includes 18.2 feet of overlap in a deflected hole, were drilled. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feed drill with some special rods and core barrels, in addition to the usual equipment. The over-all core recovery was 89.5 percent. Omitting the drilling in overburden where little or no core was desired, the recovery was 94.6 percent. Core recovery in the ore zones averaged 95.2 percent. This paper describes the location, the general features of the area, the geology, the Bureau of Mines procedures, and the results attained by these procedures.

Economic studies of four processes for using the glass fractions obtained from processing municipal incinerator residues are presented. Three processes--brick production, floor tile production, and glass wool production--use the colored glass fraction from an incinerator residue separation plant, and the fourth process, glass spheres production, uses the colorless glass fraction. The fixed capital cost and the estimated annual operating cost for six plants are presented in the report and summarized, as follows: [ ] The value of the product obtained from each of the plants was calculated on the basis of the interest rate of return method. Each of the processes appears economically attractive when comparing the product values with estimated selling prices. However, the effect of the products on market size and price must be determined.

Low-carbon shales from 65 deposits and 11 sources of coal-mine waste in western Oregon and Washington were tested in a rotary kiln for their suitability as raw material for expanded aggregate. Shales from 41 sources bloated enough to produce crushed, expanded aggregates, weighing less than 65 pounds per cubic foot in the preliminary tests. The samples were judged on the basis of processing qualities, physical properties, and size and uniformity of the source. Nine low-carbon shale deposits and three coal-mine waste sources were selected for more extensive bloating tests and for examination of the expanded aggregates in concrete shapes. Composite samples from these 12 sources and from 2 commercial operations, when processed for testing in concrete shapes, had bulk densities ranging from 37.S to 72.9 pounds per cubic foot. Damp-cured concrete shapes made with these aggregates had bulk densities ranging from S6 to 119 pounds per cubic foot, and all but three of the lightweight concretes had crushing strengths ranging from 3,270 to 6,810 p.s.i. Properties of the lightweight concretes were compared with those of concrete shapes made with commercial aggregates, and with sand and gravel.

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt. The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Hecla Mining Co., is conducting a rock mechanics study of the 6,200-ft-deep circu-lar, concrete-lined Silver Shaft in northern Idaho. The objective of the project was to instrument and evaluate lining behavior and rock de-formation when a deep shaft is constructed in a high in situ stress field and anisotropic rock mass. Rock mass displacements were moni-tored with multiple-position borehole extensometers. Liner stress and strain were measured with concrete pressure cells and embedment strain gauges. Field data from the 5,955-ft test level show that rock displacement is controlled by rock mass anisotropy. Liner stress and strain levels reflect the high in situ stress field as well as nearby station and raise construction. Maximum stresses measured in the lining, as a result of shaft excavation, are about one-third of its compressive strength. Subsequent loading pocket excavation resulted in signifi-cantly increased stress and strain levels in the liner. Continued monitoring and preliminary analysis of the data indicate that concrete-lined, circular shafts are stable for the high, unequal horizontal stress fields and rock anisotropy encountered in deep-level mining. Adjacent development work can be expected to significantly alter the initial stress and displacement conditions.

This paper has been written to aid the owner of a small gold mine or prospect in preparing a report on his property for the purpose of interesting capital. If an owner can afford to do so, he should employ a mining engineer of recognized standing and experience to examine and report on his property, but many owners of small -mines and particularly of prospects cannot make the expenditure required for this. Further, many of them do not know how to prepare a description which will cover those features of a deposit on which a potential investor promises his opinion as to its worth. If such an owner is convinced that he possesses an orebody of sufficient grade and size to warrant the required expenditure for a thorough investigation and wishes to present his property to prospective investors, then the following suggestions concerning the proper way to sample his deposit, estimate the tonnage of developed and probable ore, and prepare a report may be of assistance.

Engineered scavenger compounds (ESC's) developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are a novel class of compounds that selectively can recover a desired element from a solid or molten alloy. Lithium titanate (L2Ti307 or Li2O?3Ti02) is used as an ESC to recover lithium (Li) from aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that Li2Ti307 undergoes a phase change during scavenging from an orthorhombic structure to a hexagonal structure. This change is due to the incorporation of lithium in the matrix of the material and the effect of temperature. Although both phases are metastable, the hexagonal phase that forms during the scavenging of lithium from Al-Li alloys appears to be the more stable phase. Recovering lithium from the ESC by electrodeposition does not cause the structure to revert to the orthorhombic phase. The orthorhombic and the hexagonal structures of Li2Ti307 have similar scavenging capacities for lithium. This report proposes a new mechanism for the phase transformation.

The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of nee' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gal¬lons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain this high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ore near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand for new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements ill the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. In coal mining, longwall mining is a preferred method to maximize production by extracting large blocks of coal that have been outlined with a set of development entries. In U.S. mines, longwall panels are typically 305 m (1,000ft) wide (with a continual trend towards even wider panels), and usually over 3,050 m (10,000ft) in length. The increasing size of longwall panels, while helping to increase coal production, may also increase methane emissions due to the exposure of the mining environment to a larger area of fractured, gas-bearing strata. Thus, understanding the impact of increased panel widths on methane emissions, and designing gob gas ventholes and bleeder systems accordingly, can enhance the safety of the underground workforce by reducing their exposure to potentially explosive accumulations of methane/air mixtures. As part of its mine safety research program, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has initiated a reservoir modeling effort to better understand the interaction of the various geotechnical factors influencing gas flow within and to the underground longwall mining environment. A focus of this modeling effort has been 1) the prediction of the incremental amount of methane emissions to be expected due to increasing longwall panel widths, and 2) optimizing gob gas venthole completion practices to capture more of the gas in the subsided strata above longwall panels before it can enter the ventilation system of the underground workplace. The history matching phase of the study has been carried out on a 381-m (1,250ft) wide panel in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. Simulations have also been completed for a 442 m (1,450ft) wide panel to estimate the incremental increase in methane emissions and the performance of current gob gas venthole placement configurations. Additional venthole placement configurations were simulated to investigate options for optimizing methane capture from the subsided strata above the wider longwall panel.

"IntroductionAir sampling for airborne contaminants requires a system for moving air, a collection method, and a procedure to determine the quantity of contaminant collected. Because occupational exposure limits and air quality standards frequently are expressed in terms of concentrations, a method of determining the volume of air sampled is also needed. The four principal components in a sampling train are shown in Figure 12-1. The inlet admits the air sample into the train; the collector(s) separates the gas, vapor, or particles from the air; the flowmeter measures the rate or total quantity of air sampled; and the pump (air mover) provides the suction required to draw an air sample through the train. Inlet sampling considerations are discussed in Chapter 21. Various types of collectors are described in subsequent chapters. Flowmeters are discussed in Chapter 7.This chapter will describe the air mover portion of the sampling train and air sampling systems that contain three or four components in a convenient package. The chapter consists of two parts. The first part contains a brief description of the different types of air movers and air sampling systems. The second part consists of tables and figures showing detailed information on a wide variety of commercially available air movers and sampling systems. ient size is filled with a liquid in which the suspected contaminant is insoluble. When the liquid is allowed to escape from the vessel, it is replaced by air from the atmosphere to be sampled. Such an air sample is an integrated sample rather than an instantaneous sample because the mass of fluid requires a finite time to empty. In fact, by employing a large vessel with controlled drainage, this method can be used to move air at low flow rates through a sample collector for extended intervals. In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel studied 7,040 acres of the 7,240-acre Sheep Mountain Wilderness Study Area (OR-006-003) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied is along the divide between the Snake River and Pine Creek about 1.5 mi south of the village of Oxbow in Baker County, OR. No mineral resources or mineral-related activities were identified in the Sheep Mountain study area. The basalt covering most of the study area has no known mineralized sites. However, it contains common agate and opal that is of limited interest to mineral collectors. This basalt (stone) could be used locally as construction material (crushed stone or fill); however, suitable material is wide spread in the region and more accessible to possible markets.

The quarrying and related industries of the United States made a large gain in employment (man-hours of work) in 1942 with a somewhat smaller number of men employed than in 1941. This was accomplished chiefly by increasing the number of workdays per man and also by increasing the length of the workday. In spite of the greater volume of work performed, the industry had a more favorable accident-frequency rate in 1942 than in the previous year. Accident and employment reports from operating companies showed that the industry employed 84,270 men for an average of 271 days per man in 1942, with a volume of work of almost 181 million man-hours. The average workshift comprised 7.93 hours, and the number of man-shifts worked totaled nearly 23 million. Injuries from accidents in and about the quarries and plants caused disability to 6,461 employees, 112 of whom died as a result of their injuries, including 28 employees whose lives were lost in a single disaster. The accident-frequency rate in the industry was 35.73 per million man-hours worked, comparing favorably with a rate of 40.11 for the previous year. However, the figure for 1942 included a death rate of 0.62 per million man-hours which, because of the disaster referred to, was considerably higher than the fatality rate of 0.44 for 1941. Had the disaster not occurred, the fatality rate for the industry for 1942 would have been 0.46. The major disaster in which 28 lives were lost occurred on March 26 at the Sandts Eddy quarry of the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. near Easton Pa.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a technique for determining the confining pressures that must be provided for stabilizing underground openings in incompetent rock. The technique is adapted for use with a nonlinear finite-element computer code, NONSAP, to obtain stabilization pressures for linear or nonlinear stress distributions in the rock media around the excavation. This analysis permits a point-wise calculation of active rock pressures that depend on the values of shear stress and strength along the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the solution of several sample problems. The results show that both the magnitude and the distribution of stabilizing confining pressures are significantly influenced by rock and joint strengths, joint orientation, and biaxial nature of the load field.

["Phosphate rock" is a broad term applied to natural deposits of minerals valued chiefly for their phosphorus content. More specifically, phosphate rock may be defined as a natural rock containing one or more phosphate minerals, usually calcium phosphate, of sufficient purity and in sufficient quantity to permit its use directly, or after beneficiation, in the manufacture of phosphorus-bearing products. The grade or quality of phosphate rock is expressed either in terms of its phosphorus oxide (P20S) content or the equivalent in tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(P04)2). The trade name for tricalcium phosphate is bone phosphate of lime (B. P. L.).]

Alluvial cassiterite concentrations are widespread in river gravel and high level terraces within the Ray River watershed. The area lies in unglaciated terrain of Alaska's northern interior. Cassiterite originates from several calc-alkaline plutons of the Ruby batholith. Extensional stresses resulted in graben-like Tertiary basins that were flooded by a 200 ft thick section of mid-to late- Tertiary basalt flows. Basalt blocked local drainages, and 50- to 100-ft of terrace gravel was eventually deposited on top of the flows. Further downwarping and eventual fluvial downcutting of the flows resulted in cycles of accelerated sediment transport, deposition, and reconcentration. Repeated erosional cycles concentrated heavy minerals and resulted in development of tin placers. Preliminary resource estimates of contained tin in Recent alluvium range from 62 to as much as 172 million lbs-Sn in 300 million yd3. Grade of about 90% of the gravels is estimated to range between 0.2- to 0.5- lbs-Sn/yd3. Associated gold and rare earth elements (REE) in monazite and xenotime may be recoverable. Most of the tin is considered a subeconomic inferred resource, though, at least some of the gravels contain 2-to 6-lbs-sn/yd3. Estimates are projected on the basis of surface sampling and several auger drill holes and are provided for the purpose of land-use management planning.
