"Acid mine drainage can be controlled by water treatment, retardation of the pyrite oxidation reaction system, or enhanced prediction that allows preventive action to be taken. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in each of these areas; the results of this research are summarized in the eight papers that comprise this volume. Field work to evaluate overburden analysis, alkaline injection, and bactericidal control of acid formation is described, along with two new inexpensive methods to treat acid mine water. These papers were prepared for an acid mine drainage technology transfer meeting held in Pittsburgh, PA, on April 3 and 4, 1985. INTRODUCTIONAcid drainage from coal mines is one of the most persistent industrial pollution problems in the United States. Over 5,000 miles of streams and rivers are adversely affected, primarily by underground mines that have been abandoned for decades. Meanwhile, at active mining operations and at sites where mining occurred after 1977, discharge water must be treated to meet fairly stringent regulatory limits--at a cost to the industry of over $1 million per day.The Bureau of Mines has a special responsibility to facilitate integration of mining and mineral processing with environmental safeguards. This responsibility is twofold: the development of techniques to reduce or eliminate environmental degradation, and the improvement of existing pollution control processes to make them more efficient and more cost effective. Research in acid mine drainage exemplifies the Bureau's concern for these environmental aspects of mining.This collection of papers summarizes much of the Bureau's recent research on acid mine drainage and will give the reader a sense of where the research is headed, in addition to providing details regarding new technology and recently acquired knowledge. Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPF's) reduce the concentration of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and may reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) in diesel exhaust. Asamera Minerals' Cannon Mine first installed CDPF's in 1987, and currently has 12 diesel- powered vehicles equipped with CDPF's. The Cannon Mine and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to evaluate the durability and performance of a CDPF. One of the CDPF's used at the mine was periodically evaluated in the USBM's diesel emissions laboratory after 839, 1,584, and 2,881 h of in-mine service. The objectives of this report are to present results from the USBM's evaluation of this CDPF, to describe the Cannon Mine's experience and cost analysis of using CDPF's, and to make recommendations for the future use of CDPF's. CDPF's improve air quality at the Cannon Mine, but they frequently become plugged and are subject to excessive mechanical shocks and stress, shortening their useful life. Mine records indicate that CDPF's account for 0.8 to 4.9 pct of the vehicles' operating cost at the mine. CDPF life to date has ranged from 1,671 h to more than 5,992 h. Laboratory tests of the CDPF determined that DPM removal efficiency decreased and regeneration temperature increased over time.

The nonpegmatitic sources of beryllium in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and four adjacent states investigated by the Bureau of Mines are described. The investigations included 155 properties from which over 6,200 rock samples were collected; more than 5,500 samples were analyzed by the nuclear beryllium-detection technique. Twenty-four of the properties examined had rock containing more than 0.10 percent BeO. Many of the beryllium determinations were made in the field with portable detection instruments by direct scanning of outcrops and by testing samples of rock brought to the instrument. The large domestic resources of low-grade nonpegmatitic beryllium ore in Utah, which were discovered by private enterprise and which respond favorably to small-scale treatment processes, may come into commercial use and thus reduce the dependence of the United States on imported beryl.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted static tests at 2,500° F on 39 refractory compositions, and dynamic tests at [2,825°35° F] on 31 commercial refractory brick specimens to determine their resistance to corrosion and erosion by a slag similar in composition to that used in producing insulating mineral wool. The static tests showed fireclay, low-alumina compositions (<70 percent A1203), zircon, zirconia, SiC, and clay-bonded graphite refractories to be unsuitable. Dynamic test results indicated that magnesia and chromia compositions were superior to high-alumina compositions (=70 percent A1203) as a furnace lining for melting mineral wool. Data from these tests indicated that magnesia and chromia compositions with low RO/R203 mole ratios were more resis tant to attack by mineral wool slags than ones with high RO/R203 mole ratios.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on the quarrying, crushing, and grinding of limestone for cement manufacture. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total coats. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The Bureau of Mines used 50-and 800-kva electric-arc furnaces to confirm the feasibility of producing ferronickel in electric-arc furnaces from pre-reduced concentrate from the Yugoslavian FENI project. The relationships were established among metallic iron concentrations (degrees of prereduction), ferronickel grades, and nickel recoveries. Smelting the concentrate containing 1.27 wt-pct nickel and metallic iron levels between 2 and 3 wt-pct, produced 15 to 20 pct ferronickel. Higher or lower metallic iron concentrations were compensated by adding oxide pellets or carbon to the electric-arc furnace charge. Over 90 pct of the contained nickel was recovered when up to 20 pct ferronickel was being produced. Data obtained while smelting 16 tons of prereduced concentrate in the 800-kva electric-arc furnace indicated ferronickel can be recovered at an energy consumption of 530 kwhr/ton of prereduced material.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe&apos;s body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe&apos;s power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

This report describes a processing method developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to produce high-quality flake graphite from the steelmaking waste known as kish. The kish produced by current steelmaking practices is a mixture of graphite, desulfurization slag, and iron that is skimmed from the molten iron feed to the basic oxygen furnace. It is estimated that the graphite content of kish discarded by U.S. steel plants is more than sufficient to meet the total U.S. demand for flake graphite. That need is now filled by natural graphite from foreign sources. Kish was treated by a combination of screening and hydraulic classification to produce a concentrate containing greater than 70 pct graphite. Leaching of the concentrate with hydrochloric acid solution gave a graphite product with 95-pct purity. An optional secondary leaching operation with hydrofluoric acid produced graphite with a purity of 98 pet or greater. The flake size of graphite from kish ranged from 10 mesh down. Evaluation of test samples by industrial graphite users indicated that kish graphite is a suitable substitute for the natural material for most uses. A process flowsheet and material balance for pilot plant design are presented.

Despite the extensive use of fluorphlogopite, investigators do not agree as to its exact melting temperature. Data on other fluormicas and on related fluorsilicate systems are largely nonexistent. A knowledge of the melting temperature is necessary for the effective synthesis and use of fluorphlogo¬pite or other fluormicas. The increasing use of two- and three-mica systems to yield polycrystalline ceramics has made more urgent the need for melting temperature information concerning these other fluormicas. This report is part of a program by the Bureau of Mines to synthesize large-size or large-crystal fluorphlogopite and develop a usable reconstituted fluormica sheet. The melting temperature of fluorphlogopite, K2Mg6A12Si6020F4, was found to be 1,383° ±2° C. This temperature was found by studying single crystals of fluorphlogopite, heating behavior of glass of fluorphlogopite composition, and the actual crystallization of fluorphlogopite from a melt that had been heated above 1,430° C. The formation of forsterite or norbergite was directly proportional to the loss of volatiles during the experimentation. Many trials revealed that the only reliable seal was a thick platinum sheet with welded seams. If no volatiles were lost, neither norbergite nor forsterite were formed; fluormica was then the only product. Excellently formed crystals of forsterite with an optical sign different from ordinary forsterite were obtained during the single crystal melting experiments. These crystals resulted from a slow loss of volatiles. A congruent melting of fluorphlogopite is indicated by the data of this report; however, incongruency within a small temperature range is not precluded. A more refined method using phase equilibria-quench methods would be necessary to settle the question absolutely.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of 23 coal samples collected from nine of the more significant coalbeds of Fayette County, W. Va. In 1963 almost 5.4 million tons of medium to high volatile B coals of excellent quality for metallurgical and steam markets were produced in Fayette County. Of the 23 coal samples collected 11 would require some upgrading to pro-vide metallurgical quality products, 11 were acceptable as received, and 1 was a noncaking coal. Cleaning these coals to metallurgical standards would require only the removal of the sink 1.58 specific gravity material which would be quite easy as very little near-separating-gravity material was present at this gravity.

"INTRODUCTION The Iron Mountain deposits were examined in the summer of 1943 by engineers of the Bureau of Lanes, and a diamond-drilling project was set up under the Strategic Minerals Program. Actual drilling operations, under the supervision of a Bureau engineer, commenced November 9, 1943, and were completed on November 1, 1944. When the Bureau began detailed exploration of the Iron Mountain deposits, the Federal Geological Survey participated. Dr. I. W. Newhouse, of the Survey, and Dr. A. F. Hagner, of the Wyoming Geological Survey, were assigned to the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines conducted a flammability study of plastic ventilation ducts. Six rigid 16-in-diam fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducts from five manufacturers were examined using laboratory-scale, large-scale, and full-scale fire tests. The laboratory-scale tests included the American Society for Testing and Materials E162 radiant panel test, the E2863 oxygen index test, and the standardized small-scale flammability test (S3FT) developed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, and replicated by the Bureau of Mines. Ten-foot lengths of the same ducts were also subjected to a large-scale vertical fire test, and 20-to 30-ft lengths were tested in a full-scale in-mine fire test at the Bureau&apos;s Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. The data from the laboratory-scale radiant panel test and oxygen index test indicated that the ducts were fire-resistant, However, five of the six ducts failed the S3FT and vertical fire tests, and four of the ducts failed the full-scale in-mine tests with flame propagation rates that ranged from 3 to 10 ft/min. The results indicate the need for improved fire-resistant plastic ducts. The good agreement between the S3FT re-sults and the vertical and full-scale tests show that the S3FT provides a good indication of the flammability of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting under realistic fire conditions.

"The X-ray method of quantitative determination is advantageous because it permits determination of compounds rather -than ions or elements; for example, the direct determination of quartz in silicates,4/,5/,6/ The method also takes into account the finest particles of a sample, which may be lost in wet chemical methods because of solubility or in petrographic methods because of limitation of the microscope. The sample is usually reduced to a powder and is easily prepared,7/ only a few milligrams of material being necessary. The sample and its chemical composition are not destroyed and may be used for further analysis by X-ray diffraction or by other methods.This paper presents in detail some of the more essential problems that arise in the application of X-ray diffraction to quantitative chemical analysis, Photometric measurements are discussed in connection with line intensities and the choice of X-ray film. The internal standard method, successfully used in spectrographic analysis, is applied.Copper K-alpha X-rays from a demountable research-type X-ray tube were used with a camera of 20 centimeters radius with a cast-lead-slit collimating system. A combination of a tilted wedge and a lead-slit collimating system permitted irradiation of a large amount of sample with X-rays. This tended to minimize errors due to possible inhonogeneity of the sample, to decrease the time of exposure, and to keep the lines on the X-ray film to a minimum width. There was sufficient dispersion of the lines for satisfactory analysis of most samples. Power was furnished the tube by a. source of constant high potential consisting of a synchronous motor generator furnishing 500-cycle power to a 100-kv. transformer, rectifying valves, and a condenser filter circuit. The X-ray tube was operated as a gas-type tube at 35 kv, and 20 ma,, the exposure times varying from 1 to 2 hours. The constant output of X-rays from the tube, indicated bar an exposure meter built for the purpose, was satisfactory.The recording microphotometer8/has been described. It was found preferable to a nonrecording instrument for measuring blackening of lines above a background on X-ray films. This background, which usually occurs, is sometimes complicated by numerous peaks from lines of complex diffraction patterns. is microphotometer record of the pattern, therefore, facilitates the location of the background 'and the measurement of the heights of the peaks and thus contributes to the accuracy of a determination."

As a result of Synopsis 73-16 Dynadyne responded with an unsolicited proposal offering the Bureau of Mines to develop an ultra-low volume coal mine dust personal sampler. In the ensuing technical discussions the choice of a desirable volumetric rate became a focal point. While, the initial proposal was based on a volumetric rate in the area of 50 cc/min the Government expressed interest in a variety of mass flow rates ranging from 50 cc/min to 2000 cc/min. The physical characteristics such as weight, volume and configuration of a personal sampler are to a large extent - dependent on the operating volumetric rate. It became readily apparent that the optimum size of such an instrument as a function of volumetric rate was not known and that a study of the choice of optima was essential prior to beginning the development, Hence, the Government authorized a two phase approach to this project. Phase I was to include a Technical Evaluation Study of optimum characteristics in the range between 0. 1 to 2. 0 lpm. Based on these findings and in consultation with MESA personnel, the Bureau of Mines was to authorize the second phase that is, the development. Phase II, was to include the drawing of a set of performance specifications stating among others the desired operating volumetric rate. In this report, every effort was made not only to present the actual work done over the course of this development, but to reflect also our engineering "thinking" providing answers as to the "why" we preferred certain solutions over others. We believe that this added dimension is not only useful for the Government official evaluating this report, but also that the Government is entitled to it providing the official with an educational content useful in avoiding future costly repetitions of similar situations.

Currently many underground coal mines worldwide have installed or been planning to install a tracking system to trace miners mainly for their safety. Although many systems have been reported functional, a lack of sophisticated and systematic error correction methods apparently is still an issue for them; often it results in a low system resolution. To improve the system resolutions, this paper introduces two position adjustment methods for mine tracking systems. The first is an entry-matching method that optimally adjusts an off-course tracking device to the closest tunnel (entry). The second is a distance measurement adjustment method that accurately adjusts the position of a tracking device along an entry according to a measured distance from the device to a reference point. The coplanar node-path network mine model is used as the foundation for the development of these two methods.

Zwolle oil field of Sabine Parish, La., is different from most oil producing areas of the State in that the oil is obtained from marl and chalk-rock formations. The thickness of the reservoir rocks averages 500 feet; but production is not continuous throughout this thickness, as the oil apparently is localized in vertical and nearly vertical solution cavities and channelways or in porous zones of limited horizontal extent. The nature of the oil accumulation has caused two outstanding peculiarities of the field: (1) About 60 percent of the tests drilled were dry holes and (2) there were many instances of well interference. Commercial production was discovered in November 1928, after 17 years of prospecting in and around the present limits of the area now developed which has a length of about 22 miles and a maximum width of 4 miles. The field had produced 10,266,896 barrels of oil to January 1, 1934. The oil ranges in gravity from 400 to 420 A.P.I. Although the field is divided into several districts which are more or less clearly defined and separated by unproved territory the term Zwolle field", as used in this report, includes the entire area from Blue Lake on the west side, through Zwolle proper, and eastward, including the Many or Eastern extension.

Risk factors associated with the development of muscu­loskeletal discomfort and disorders during the operation of heavy mobile equipment include whole-body vibration and awkward and sustained joint postures of the shoulders, neck, and trunk. Cab design may influence awkward postures of the joints, and task duration may influence duration of exposure to awkward and static postures and whole-body vibration. To reduce exposure to risk factors related to the interface between cab design and task, it may be necessary for manufacturers to address cab design. This study assessed the repeatability of a cab design checklist developed to evaluate various design characteristics that can influence exposure to risk factors for musculoskeletal discomfort. The ability of the cab design checklist to identify posture-related deficiencies of design was also assessed. The checklist was used by two administrators across 10 pieces of heavy construction equipment. Video analysis was performed to quantify postures of the neck, shoulder, and trunk; correlation analysis was used to determine whether specific questions from the checklist were associated with the identification of awkward postures. The repeatability assessment resulted in kappa coefficients ranging from 0.52 to 1.0 (good-to-excellent reproducibility) across each piece of equipment, and an overall kappa coefficient of 0.77 (excellent reproducibility) when considering all equipment together. Results from the correlation analysis showed that shoulder flexion posture was correlated with scores from the cab design checklist. However, results of the cab design checklist were not significantly correlated with shoulder abduction or awkward postures of the neck and trunk. Results suggest that the cab design checklist may be useful for identifying cab design characteristics that need further improvement and for identifying design characteristics that increase shoulder flexion. The strength of the repeatability assessment suggests that outcomes of the cab design checklist administered by different individuals may be consistent, independent of the type of equipment being assessed.

"The mechanism of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis is not ye: clear. Recent studies have shown that alveolar macrophages (AM) can be stimulated by bleomycin in vitro releasing inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that the interaction of bleomycin with AM is an important step in the drug-induced fibrotic process. Bleomycin is known to bind DNA and generate oxygen radicals through complexation with Fe2+ and oxygen. To provide,more insight into the cellular oxidative property of bleomycin, v.s have developed a fluoromicroscopic method using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFHDA) as an oxidative fluorescence probe to study the deomycin-induced intracellular oxidation in rat AM and the inhibition of the oxida¬tion by taurine, a compound known to inhibit the bleomycin-induced fibrosis. Bleomycin at 5 to 20 ug/ml has a moderate stimulatory effect (1.87- to 2.66-fold) on the secretion of superoxide anion. A high concentration of bleomycin (20 ug/ml), however, inhibits cell response to zymosan-induced secretion of superoxide anion. At 4 ug/ml, bleomycin has no effect on cell membrane integrity or morphology but results in a significant increase in intracellular oxidation. This oxidative process is Fe2-,-dependent and is accompanied by an increase in intracellular calcium (35 nM). Both the intracellular oxidation and calcium rise induced by internalized bleomycin are inhibited by pretreatment of cells with varying concentrations of taurine (25, 125, and 187.5 uM). The inhibitory effect on intracellular oxidation .vas found to be 36, 57, and 60%, respectively. These results demonstrate a stimulation-inhibition relationship between bleomycin and taurine on re cellular oxidation at a subcytotoxic dose of bleomycin, suggesting that the oxidative effect of the intracellular bleomycin-Fe2 complex is important in the initiation of the fibrotic process. — Environ Health Perspect 102 (Suppl10):91-96 (1994) IntroductionThe pulmonary system is most susceptible to oxygen radical-induced diseases due to its constant exposure to the highest oxygen tension, and the potential encounters with oxidant gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and toxic doses of dust particles. The lung is also a well-perfused organ and thereby vulnerable to the effect of circulating xenobiotics such as paraquat, and, bleomycin, which is known to cause pulmonary injuries (1). Alveolar macrophages (AM), which act as a means of defense by phagocytizing inhaled dust particles and microorganisms while increasing production of reactive oxidative species, have been shown to play an important role in mechanisms leading to oxidative lung injury and fibrosis (2-4)."

The report provides guidance for determining those environmental impacts associated with the surface mining of steeply pitching coal seams. In addition to the environmental impacts, four additional issues are addressed, namely (1) Time and motion studies of those coal mining systems employed in mining seams which pitch in excess of 250, (2) Assessment of those mining techniques, (3) Development of rationale for the mining methods employed, (4) Identification of the reclamation practices and determine whether these practices were in compliance with appropriate Federal and State regulations. Five surface mines located in three geologically distinct basins of the United States were analyzed during the period of August through November 1979. The three basins include the Hanna Basin of Wyoming, the North Park Basin of Colorado and the Southern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania.

Zinc, silver, copper, and tungsten are the principal minerals in Dardanelles RARE II area (No. 4982). Zinc with associated silver and copper occurs in a persistent shear zone in metasedimentary rocks and in a massive sulfide vein; tungsten occurs as disseminated scheelite in a tactite zone along a metasedimentary-intrusive rock contact. Since 1883, approximately 100 lode mining claims have been recorded, mainly it the eastern portion of area No. 4982 (fig. 1). Extensive workings on the Alhambra Prospect indicate past production; however, no records were found for the prospect. At the Alpine Mine, 500 tons of tungsten ore had been mined before 1943 (Hopson, 1943, p. 1) and possibly 1,000 tons of tungsten ore mined by 1947 (Benson, 194/, pp. 2).
