In 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Mallard study area near Elk City, Idaho. The study area comprises most of the original Mallard RARE II area (1-847) plus some additional lands. The investigation is part of an ongoing, multi-year study of north-central Idaho that is being conducted in cooperation with the Idaho Geological Survey and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The only identified resources are rock suitable for road metal. Five lode prospects and a pyrite-bearing rock quarry, which is operated by the Forest Service for aggregate, were examined for metals. One of the prospects warrants additional exploration for silver in quartz veins, but the chance of finding an economically minable deposit is limited. Several rock and stream sediment samples were anomalous in various metals. Two of the more promising localities for gold and/or other metals are adjacent to a unit of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness that the USGS classified as having a moderate potential for gold deposits related to fossil hot springs.

"INTRODUCTION This report presents factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines in the course of an investigation of the Antler mine in the Cedar Valley mining district, Mohave County, Ariz.The Antler property was first examined by Thomas L. Chapman, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, on December 18, 1943, and January 28, 1944. In June 1945, A. H. Wadsworth, Jr., and R. L. Griggs, geologists, Federal Geo¬logical Survey, examined the Antler mine and several other mines in the district. Both Chapman and Wadsworth recommended diamond drilling of the Antler property to determine the character and extent of ore deposition.In October 1946, the surface and underground workings were surveyed by George Huseman, Mining engineer, and T. M. Romslo, project engineer. The following month Eldred. D. Wilson, geologist of the Arizona Bureau of Mines, assisted by the project engineer, mapped the geology. Subsequently trails were built to drilling sites and diamond drilling started January 16, 1947. The project was completed April 25, 1947.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a system for estimating mining and processing costs as a function of process feed rate with the objective of applying this system to abandoned mine tailings and to evaluate the benefits, if any, of metal recovery. Cost analysis was applied to the mine wastes of Smelterville Flats: an extensive area of mine tailings in the Bunker Hill Superfund Site with high concentrations of lead, zinc, and other sulfide minerals. Results from previous site characterization and metallurgical processing studies were used as the input for the cost analysis. This analysis indicated that processing this site at an optimum production rate of 3,500 short tons per day (st/d) could generate a positive cash flow.

The electrochemistry of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was investigated at a variety of electrode materials in different supporting electrolytes. A portable detector for carbon monoxide was developed using a porous gold anode in perchloric acid supporting electrolyte. This detector has two full scale ranges, 0-100 ppm and 0-500 ppm. A portable detector for mixtures of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was developed using a porous silver cathode in sulfuric acid supporting electrolyte. Nitrogen dioxide was determined in the gas stream by electroreduction. The nitric oxide in the gas stream was oxidized to nitrogen dioxide by passing it over Cr(VI) on firebrick. Electroreduction gave the sum of NO + N02. Analog circuitry was used to display the amounts of NO and N02 separately. Two ranges were available for each gas. They were 0-10 and 0-50 ppm for NO and 0-2 and 0-10 ppm for N02.

"The development of Alaska depends on the existence of an adequate fuel supply in the Territory. The need to investigate coal deposits was recognized as early as 1911, when the first investigations were conducted in Alaska by engineers of the Bureau of Mines.Conditions existing in the Bering River and Matanuska coal fields, as found by Dr. Robert A. Holmes, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, are described by the Honorable W. L. Fisher, former Secretary of the Interior.4/Following Dr. Holmes' investigation, a party of Bureau of Mines engineers headed by R. Y. Williams visited the Bering River field in 1912 in cooperation with the Navy Department. A detailed examination was made of the Bering River field, and 855 tons of coal were mined from three prospects on Trout Creek. This bulk sample was delivered to the Navy for steaming and other tests. A description of the work of the field party and results of tests of the coal by the Navy Department and the Bureau of Mines has been published.During 1920 to 1922, the comparative steaming properties of Alaska bituminous coal, lignite, and wood were determined by the Bureau of Mines.6/In the early 1920's, the Bureau of Mines established a coal laboratory at Anchorage, where Alaska coals were analyzed. Subsequently, this laboratory was transferred to the Alaska Railroad and was used by the railroad for coal and other tests.Since 1910, the Bureau of Mines has made analyses of coal from Alaska, and the results of these analyses have been published.7/ The coal analyzed was obtained from mines, tipples, delivered lots, and face samples of coal deposits, and these samples were obtained in the field by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey.Because of the shortage of petroleum and petroleum products in Alaska during the war, low-temperature carbonization assays of coals from the Broad Pass, Forty-Mile, Matanuska, and Nenana fields were made by the Bureau of Mines, and the results were published.Coal beds in the Matanuska field contain interbedded impurities in the form of shale, clay, and bone. The coal should be cleaned mechanically to obtain a satisfactory fuel. A coal-preparation study of bituminous coal from the Eska and Evan Jones mines was made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and the results were published.9/Coal production in Alaska is less than the requirements, and coal is imported to make up the deficiency. The cost of this imported coal is high. Greater production is necessary to supply coal for Army installations, industry, and homes. At present, there is only one bituminous coal mine (Evan Jones) in Alaska. The output of this mine is used at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, and by the Alaska Railroad. The economic life of this mine is limited (reported to be 3 years), and its closing, because of accidents or exhaustion, will cause great hardship to the inhabitants of Alaska. There is need to develop new, modern mines for the production of bituminous coal in the Matanuska field."

Mineral resources, or a potential for their discovery, occur at 34 localities in the Glacier Peak Wilderness and adjacent areas of the north Cascade Range of Washington (see plate). Eighteen of the mineral deposits are in the established Wilderness, four are in or partly in contiguous RARE II (Roadless Area Review and Evaluation) lands recommended by the Forest Service for addition to the Wilderness (A, D and G6031.), three are in adjacent RARE II lands excluded from wilderness consideration, and nine are in nearby roaded areas excluded from the RARE II inventory. Mineral commodities that might be produced from the Wilderness and recommended additions are gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, arsenic, cadmium, tungsten, cobalt, limestone (marble), pumice, and volcanic cinders. Mineral production from adjacent lands might include most of these commodities, plus antimony, decorative stone, pyrite, silica, and garnet.

The objectives of this research were: 1. to determine the stability relationships of coal mine roof rocks which are cut by fractures or intersecting joints with and without roof bolts, under various sets of conditions including horizontal formation pressures, inclination and coefficient of friction of joints, bolt loads, roof spans and rock properties; and 2. to develop criteria for the design of roof bolt sys terns for such roofs. The problem was studied by mathematical finite element models and by laboratory models. From the results of the mathematical and laboratory models, equations were derived to express the relationships listed above for cracked, single-layered roof beams and design tables for such beams are included. The analysis was then extended to include multi-layered cracked beams reinforced by roof bolts and a method for analyzing and designing bolting patterns for such roof rocks is presented.

The purpose of this publication is to discuss grounding mediums and the phases of grounding related to corrosion and cathodic protection. The material presented is believed to contribute to a better understanding of this subject. It also indicates more effective methods of reducing corrosion damage to metal structures and equipment in the mining industry by cathodic protection. The authors do not intend to discuss technical aspects but rather to explain the general principles of this method of inhibiting corrosion. The relationship between soil resistivity, protective grounding, and corrosion is presented. Corrosion causes the annual loss of billions of dollars; which can be greatly reduced. Losses in the mineral industry can be excessive owing to the extensive use of direct-current power, the presence of considerable dampness, and the frequent, indiscriminate use of dissimilar metals.

This paper, one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining at various mica mines in the United States, describes the methods now in use in the principal mica mines of the Southern Appalachian States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

The Condrey Mountain RARE II area lies mostly within the Elliot Creek mining district, a significant producer of gold from placers, and gold, Silver, copper, and minor soapstone from lode deposits. No mineral production has occurred within the study area; no resources are known in the area. However, significant resources in lode and placer deposits are just outside the west and northwest boundary of the area. The Blue Ledge Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) adjacent to the western boundary, is reported to contain 226,000 ton; (205,000 t) of identified resources averaging 0.05 oz gold per ton (1.7 g/t), 2.16 oz silver per ton (/4.0 g/t), 3.5 percent copper, and 3.95 percent zinc. The mine has produced 11,131 tons (10,114 t) of ore that yielded 1,026 oz (31,908 g) of gold, 58,431 oz (1.8 million g) of silver, and 2.7 million lb (1.2 million kg) of copper. Exploration is currently underway at `he mine and vicinity, including part of the study area.

This report covers investigations of the Bureau of Mines for the period of June 15, 1952, to June 15, 1953, on a research project for the Materials Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. The primary purpose of this investigation was to make high-purity chromium-base alloys having room-temperature ductility and high-temperature strength. The Nonferrous Metals Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., has, during the past 7 years, developed on a laboratory scale a hydrogen treatment method for making high-purity chromium that can be fabricated into thin sheet and wire. This material can be bent at room temperature. The object of this investigation was to use this material to develop improved chromium-rich alloys for high-temperature uses.

In late July 1985, air samples from a sealed portion of the Quinland coal mine in West Virginia showed the presence of carbon monoxide (CO). Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel concluded that a fire was burning behind the seals. Since an imminent danger existed, the mine operator was given a closure order. The gases behind the seals were monitored and almost 2 million ff of carbon dioxide (C02) gas was pumped into the sealed area to stabilize the environment. Sixteen days after the closure order was issued, MSHA allowed the mine to return to production. Approximately 1 yr later, mine management submitted a seal breaching request to MSHA in order to drive a set of entries to further develop the mine. The Bureau of Mines established a sampling strategy and monitored gases from behind the sealed area during the breaching operation until the atmosphere was safe. This report is an account of the seal breaching conducted by the mine, MSHA, and the Bureau. The logistics of this event, the sampling strategy, and the equations applied could be used by the mining industry in future breachings or mine recovery operations. Time to reenter the area was calculated by using the methane (CH4) concentrations sampled at the discharge of the seals. Tracer gas was used to verify the ventilation flows through the area.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1950, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual refinery capacity survey there were 357 refineries January 1, 1951, compared with 367 a year ago. The total throughput capacity increased 267,344 barrels daily during the year to 6,963,644 barrels daily as of January 1, 1951, continuing the trend of the past several years to increase the throughput capacity of the refineries and decrease the number of plants. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1950 from 18,246 barrels daily to 19,506. The Indiana-Illinois refinery district accounted for 110,175 barrels, or 41 percent of the total crude-oil capacity increase, the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 17 percent, the California district, 14 percent, the East Coast district, 13 percent, and the Louisiana Gulf Coast district, 12 percent. Slight declines ill crude-oil capacity were reported in the Texas Inland, Texas Gulf Coast, New Mexico, And Appalachian refinery districts. The 160,100 barrels of additional crude-oil capacity that was building January 1, 1951, represents an increase of 10 percent over the year earlier figure. The only completely new refinery listed as under construct ion at the beginning of 1951 is located at Superior, Wisconsin. Other new construction involves enlargement of existing refineries. Plans for at least five additional new refineries are under consideration, and construction is expected to begin during the current year.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 x 106 to 0.06 x 106 m3/d, but rates over 0.10 x 106 m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to' several factors, including completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension because of the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location, which is in compression. Analysis of 7 months of gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

Hard rock mining has grown in importance in the Yukon Territory during the last 10 years while Alaskan hard rock mining has declined. One asbestos deposit in Alaska is dormant, but an asbestos deposit 55 miles to the east in the Yukon Territory is being mined by the Clinton Mine Div., Cassiar Asbestos Corp., Ltd. In this Bureau of Mines report, the economics of mining in the two locations were derived using the Clinton mine as a model. Both deposits were assumed to be of equal size and mined by similar methods. Conventional open pit mining and processing methods were assumed, and capital and operating costs were derived using flowsheets and standard costing methods. The estimated cost for the mine, mill, and support facilities in Alaska was about 30 percent more expensive than that in the Yukon Territory. The higher labor rates in Alaska were the primary contributor to the higher construction costs; freight rates added only slightly to the total costs. Approximately two-thirds of the additional annual costs of operating in Alaska were for wages and fringe benefits. The price required for the Alaskan asbestos fiber was $356.65 per ton compared with $287.44 for Yukon fiber, plus or minus 20 percent. A 12 percent discounted cash flow rate of return, 100 percent equity financing, and a rapid writeoff of assets were assumed.

The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. This is the final report on Contract H0220049 covering the period from 27 April 1972 to 30 April 1974. The objective of the contract was to develop and evaluate materials and methods to achieve post explosion identification of explosives reliably and economically through the use of phosphor coded grains incorporated into the explosive during its manufacture. A coding system of two spotting phosphors and seven coding phosphors was successfully developed during the execution of the contract. The ability of the coded grains to survive detonation in many different types of explosives was demonstrated and the complete code was extracted from a single 100 micron post-explosion fragment. A method was established for testing grain strength to correlate with field test results and an optical system was designed for extracting the code from the grains. Also in fulfillment of the contract requirements a laboratory method for manufacturing the coded grains was established and ten one-pound samples, each with a different code, were fabricated. Finally, a method was developed for applying a coating of polyethylene to the grains to prevent sensitization of the tagged explosives and the ten one-pound samples were coated and delivered to the Bureau of Mines.
