During mechanical grinding high intensity vibration is emitted that contains information on the mill's operating state. Tests, using a laboratory ball mill, studied the influence of operating parameters on the vibration signature. The parameters studied were: mill speed; powder filling; pulp density; grinding period; and pulp temperature. Vibration signals were detected by an accelerometer, amplified by a vibrometer and recorded onto digital audio tape. A digital oscilloscope converted the signals into IBM-compatible data format. Digital signal processing and multivariate data analysis were carried out with specially developed software. The power spectral density was estimated from the time-domain vibration signal. Four new latent variables were used to describe changes in the vibration spectra. A relationship was established between operating parameters and latent variables which could form the basis of a quick and automatic method of monitoring operating parameters in ball mill grinding.

Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

Thermodynamical data of importance in connection with copper smelting have been reviewed and a collection of the most reliable information is presented in Tables XXV-XXVIII and Figs. 67 and 6 8 (folding plate). The data given in these figures and tables consists of (i) graphs and equations showing the variations in the temperature range 0-2000°C. of the standard free energies of formation of most of the oxides and sulphides met with in copper smelting (Table XXV and Fig. 67); (ii) equations showing the temperature variation of the free energy of formation of iron silicates (Table XXVI); (iii) graphs showing the variation with temperature in the range 1000°-1600°C. of the standard free energies of the principal reactions occurring in the smelter (Fig. 6 8 ); (iv) the standard heats of formation at 1200°C. of the main iron and copper compounds and gases reacting in the smelter (Table XXVII); (v) the standard heats of reaction at 1200°C. of a few of the reactions for which the free energy relationships were given in Fig. 6 8 (Table XXVIII). The data presented are discussed in more detail.

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. The activity of MnO has been measured in the system CaF2-MnO at 1773 and 1873 K and in the system CaF2-CaO-MnO at 1773 K by the method of equilibration with platinum. Large positive deviations from ideal solution laws have been found, but these became less as the lime content rose. The loss of a volatile component made activity measurements impossible in the CaF2-AI203-MnO system, but the boundaries of a two-liquid region have been measured at 1773 K.

"The mechanism of joint action of a frother (alpha-terpineol) and a collector (ethyl xanthate) in the flotation of chalcocite has been examined. In order to study the dynamic effects of frother and collector in bubble-particle collisions, the following aspects were investigated : determination of zeta-potential. Measurements of the thickness of fluid film on the surface of chalcocite and adsorption of xanthate, as influenced by alpha-terpineol, induction time and flotation versus concentration of alpha-terpineol and ethyl xanthate.The mechanism of the adsorption-desorption phenomenon on chalcocite with regard to non-ionic molecules, e.g. a-terpineol, has been considered, and the influence of this on the stage and thickness of the intervening wet layer between a bubble and a particle, changing the probability of collision and attachment, is suggested."

Discussion by A.C. Fitzgerald of the paper, published in Trans. IMM A, vol.104, 1995, p.B121-B135, is presented together with the authors' response. Fitzgerald points out a number of problems with the idea of mineralising fluids leaving no trace in the large volumes of rock traversed before depositing all minerals of value in a particular horizon or rock type with which the required isobaric or isothermic surface also coincides. He suggested that in the case of the Rooiberg tin deposits, the Lebowa Granites may be batholiths that reached the surface and were capped by sheets of their own volcanics. The authors agree that they had considered a possible syngenetic origin for the stratabound deposits, explain that no conclusive evidence for this could be found, discuss the relative ages of the sediments and volcanics of the Rooiberg Fragment and explain the role of its low-intensity deformation and flat dip in the coincidence of an isobaric-isothermic surface with the lithological stratification

A new range of wear-resistant materials is being produced by technology that has been used to develop high performance metal-matrix composites. These include steels and aluminium alloys that can be made as sheet, plate, rod or bar. The incorporation of hard, wear-resistant particles in an alloy matrix is achieved by reactive casting, spray deposition and powder metallurgical techniques. For example, large particles of TiC can be homogeneously distributed in steel during casting and the subsequent product can easily be rolled to plate. Similarly, up to 20% alumina particles and SiC can be injected, respectively, into steel and wear-resistant aluminium alloys by spray deposition. The current state of development of the process is reviewed and indications are given of the projected applications of such materials.

The activity coefficients of oxygen in liquid Pb-Sn alloys have been measured between 550 and 1100°C by use of solid oxide galvanic cells: Pt, Ni-NiO | Zr02 Solid electrolyte | O (Pb + Sn), Cermet, Pt; and Pt, Fe-FeO | Zr02 Solid electrolyte | 0(Pb + Sn), Cermet, Pt. Alcock and Richardson's quasi-chemical equation, with the coordination number of atoms set to 2, is found to predict successfully the activity coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The relative partial molar enthalpy and entropy of oxygen at 1 atom per cent in the alloys have been calculated from the variation of the activity coefficient with temperature. The addition of Sn to an unsaturated solution of O in Pb is shown to decrease significantly both the partial molar enthalpy and entropy of O. As the measurements were restricted to a narrow range between 750 and 1100°C in Pb-rich alloys, however, the pronounced variation of the partial molar enthalpy of O with temperature at constant alloy composition predicted by the quasi-chemical model could not be verified.

The fixed-time locked-cycle grinding test is employed to simulate the industrial closed grinding circuit on the laboratory scale. A mathematical algorithm for 'cyclewise' computer simulation of the locked-cycle test has been derived and used to study an idealised laboratory-scale model of a closed ball-mill circuit. "Prior to the publication of the General Report of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee of South Africa in 1916 little attention was paid to the dust hazard and the necessity for its suppression in the underground workings of the Broken Hill mines. Such precautions as were observed for the elimination of dust were related rather to the prevention of lead poisoning, which, in the early days of Broken Hill when large tonnages of lead carbonate ore were being won, was rather prevalent. Ventilation and hygiene followed the general practice in this and most foreign countries.This paper covers incidence and action since 1918, considering medical aspects and operating aspects. "

The paper traces the pattern of spontaneous combustion in the workings of what was originally Hemsworth Colliery, but since July 1967 is now part of South Kirby Colliery. Examination is made of the Barnsley Seam sections and the part played by the top section of the seam as it comes in close proximity to the main seam. In this area of the colliery nine mechanised faces were set away between the years 1953 and 1968, every one "fired" at the pillar edge and six "fired" at the face line when production had ceased. The paper deals with the different preventative measures used, from sandbag walls, cement injections, spraying with polyurethane, until finally using Mandoseal as a sealant. Since the latter method was first used, the last three faces worked in this particular area were all salvaged completely, without any sign of a heating developing.

Almost all the presently viable nickel reserves in the Yilgarn Block contain nickel in a sulphide phase. Both volcanic peridotite- associated (VPA) deposits and intrusive dunite-associated (IDA) deposits are characterized by massive, matrix and disseminated sulphides (typically, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and other spinels), though in the IDA deposits the volume of disseminated sulphides is far greater than that in the VPA deposits. Potentially all geophysical techniques have application in the direct detection of these deposits'gravity for the detection of the dense massive and matrix ore; magnetics for the detection of magnetite and pyrrhotite in the ores; electromagnetics for the detection of the massive and matrix ore; and induced polarization for the detection of disseminated and to some extent matrix and massive ore. In practice the application of geophysical techniques is limited to a varying extent by (1) the relatively small size of an economic accumulation of sulphides, particularly the VPA deposits, (2) the extreme depth of weathering and lack of outcrop on the Yilgarn Block and (3) the abundance of geological noise or anomalous responses caused by sources other than economic mineralization.
