"The CANMET SPOC project aims at inducing progress in process evaluation and optimization by developing user oriented software based on state-of-the-art theory. The present work is the result of a joint effort by CANMET, Noranda Mines and Université Laval to develop two computer packages: one (RTD) to calculate the residence time distribution that best describes the material transport through the mill, the other (FINDBS) to estimate the rate of breakage and distribution function of the population balance model in a ball mill. The RTD package can handle data from various experimental methods (impulse or complex tracer feed, with or without recycling, etc...). The FINDBS package provides options for the functional description oj both model parameters Band S. The full detail of the methods and programs appears in a users guide. The program capabilities and several sample runs are presented.IntroductionSimulation of mineral dressing operations by computer has been largely contained within academic and research circles and has not yet gained a status of routine practice in the ore and coal industries. It is however a matter of time before process simulators are available on every process engineer's desk to assist process optimization tasks, flowsheet design and professional training. The CANMET SPOC project (Simulated Processing of Ore and Coal) was initiated in 1980 to assist the Canadian industry in integrating computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization(1). Software development, documentation and transfer is one of the main priorities of the project which will mature in 1985 by releasing a complete package of manuals and programs covering sampling, material balance computation, unit modelling, flowsheet simulation and optimization . This paper is a condensed description of a typical project element in its 1982-1983 state of development. The required methodology for ball-mill modelling and simulation was consolidated an d merged to other project elements during a joint study under contract financed by CANMET and Noranda Mines Ltd . The first part of the study dealt with documenting experimental methods and software for ball-mill computer simulation. Université Laval GRAAIM (Goupe de Recherche en Automatistion Appliquée à l'Industrie Minérale) acted as sub-contractor for this part of the study(16,17). A second part dealt with applying the model calibration techniques to a large industrial data base and is reported elsewhere(2,18,19)."

ABSTRACT A diamond processing plant is being designed for the Star–Orion South diamond project in central Saskatchewan. Key to the plant is diamond liberation, which occurs in the comminution section and is the process of breaking up kimberlite rock as gently as possible to minimize diamond damage, particularly in larger, high-value diamonds. Kimberlite from the crater area of a volcanic pipe is generally softer than kimberlite from the diatreme zone. Softer kimberlite, comprising the majority of Star– Orion South deposits, can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition by autogenous grinding mills, the preferred comminution method for minimizing diamond damage.

"Mineralogical evaluation of ores containing platinum-group elements (PGE) is fraught with difficulties because of the low grades (often 1-3 g/t PGE), dispersal of PGE (usually as finegrained platinum-group minerals [PGM]), as well as occurring in solid solution in some base metal sulphides (BMS) such as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Mineral processors not only need to know how the PGE are distributed, that is, their mineralogical distribution, but the grain sizes of the PGM, and especially the associated minerals.After obtaining a representative ground sample, common approaches include studying a large number of polished or polished thin sections, concentration of the PGM and sulphides by different gravity methods (e.g., heavy liquids, elutriation, micro-panning) and study of the produced concentrates. Unfortunately, these methods often do not produce concentrations that are sufficiently representative of a particular ore. The newly developed patented technology of hydroseparation (Rudashevsky et al., 2002) is especially effective at making concentrations of PGM over a wide range of concentrations (down to <300 ppb Pt+Pd+Au) and size fractions, including <45µm (down to a few micrometres in size), a size range not possible by other techniques. This water-based environmentally friendly laboratory technique provides a large amount of data from samples, which can range from 5 to 1000g, giving confidence to extrapolation of results to bench-scale and larger test work, especially when combined with quantitative image analysis to determine modal percent of major minerals and mineral liberation data, needed to predict the minimum (K80) and optimum (K40) grinds. INTRODUCTIONThe invention of the electron microprobe in the early 1960’s and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometers (EDS) in the 1970’s presented mineralogists with powerful tools permitting them to obtain chemical and surface area data on minute amounts of minerals in situ, in a non-destructive manner. An area of process mineralogy that has very much benefited from this new technology was the characterization and understanding of PGM species, resulting in rapid growth of newly characterized species (Figure 1). Recognition of the first PGM may be ascribed to the Spanish explorer Ulloa in 1748, who described native platinum from South America. The second PGM (laurite, RuS2) was only recognised in 1866 by Wöhler in placer samples from Borneo (now Kalimantan) and the third (sperrylite, PtAs2) by Wells in 1889 from the Sudbury Ni-Cu sulphide deposits. The discovery of the important Pt-Pd deposits in the Bushveld Igneous Complex led to the characterization of the important Pt-Pd sulphides (cooperite, PtS2 in 1928 and braggite, (Pt,Pd)S2 in 1932). By the early 1960’s, only about 20 PGM were recognised, and many later proved to be poorly or incompletely characterized. Thus, the introduction of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) led to a 50% increase of known PGM, as shown in a 1972 review on PGM (Cabri, 1972). At the time of the next review in 1981 (Cabri, 1981) the number of known PGM had grown to 75 and as of 2002, it had increased to 109 (Cabri, 2002). However, it is the author’s experience that less than about 25 PGM may be considered to be “common”, i.e., found in many different deposit types, as shown in Table 1, but usually only some of these occur in any one particular deposit."

Communities and civic governments are destined to be vital factors in the national welfare in the days that are to come. Any improvement in national or world conditions must have its origin within the communities. Any attempt at solution of the community problem must give some consideration to the fundamental elements which exist in every community, and to the underlying principles, and ways of life and thought, upon which community life is based. The community is, in its essence, a number of people living and working more or less closely together, sharing common rights, privileges, conveniences, and comforts, which would be impossible for the individual to obtain for himself by his own efforts alone, or in any other way than by the mutual exchange of persona! services and resources. In this way, men have increased the returns from their labour and commerce, have raised the standard of their living, with better social, educational, and recreational facilities, and enjoy a greater personal security.

By arrangement between the Ontario Mining Association and Messrs. John Taylor & Sons, Mining Engineers, 6 Queen Street Place, London, E.C.4, the writer was engaged for a period of not more than three months to report on the rockburst situation in Ontario mines. This was later amplified, by mutual agreement, to include, at the expense of detail, visits to the larger camps where rockbursts had not occurred, to get a general picture of conditions and to discuss the subject with operators in their respective areas. FROM AN OLD MANUSCRIPT THE text for this contribution to the history of the Patio process is a page taken from a Spanish manuscript of Bartholomé Arzaj Sanches y Uela, now in the possession of the library of Brown University (see Figure 1). I owe the photographic print to the courtesy of the librarian. The date, as will be seen, is 1577. The subject is the treatment of silver ores at Potosi, in old Peru, but in modern Bolivia. The group of drawings (see Figure 1) is entitled "Arrangement of the machines in which the ores of silver are ground on the bank of Potosi, the one of two batteries and the other of one". First, top-left, we have the sketch of a "machine of one battery" operated by a water-wheel. From this mill the water runs in part along an aqueduct supported by pillars to the two-battery mill and in part down the hillside, where men are at work with "tubs, which are called cochas, in which are washed the charges of ore and amalgam". Along the top of the page are shown the "various offices in which are stored the copper, the salt, the ucha [llama dung, used for fuel], the lime, and other materials for the re-duction of the ores". To the right of these are "apartments and warehouses in which is stored the ore brought down from the mountain"?the cerro de Potosi. Through the arched portal come the "sheep [llamas] on which is brought down the ore". To this is added a reference to "the second gate, which closes the whole works". On the level above the aqueduct are seen six men carrying skin-bags that contain water. This is being sprinkled on the ore. On the extreme right are six more of these water-carriers. Next comes the two-battery mill. The mortero, or mortar, is marked on the right. Another description says, "Stone, on which the stamps crush the ore, which is called a mortar". To the left of these are indicated "screens of wire in which the ore is sifted after it has been crushed". Farther to the left, near the ore-washers, is a "shed, in which is placed the metallurgist to test the ore of the boxes". Along the left side of the page are sundry buildings, one of which is labelled a "shed in which are placed the cones of silver". Near it, lower, to the right, is the "furnace, in which are roasted the sulphides to facilitate treatment". Farther to the right is the "place where the Indians mix the charges of sulphide ore, which is called a buitron". Alongside is a "buitron in which the charges are prepared for reduction". Inside is a container, to which are attached the words "measure, called topo" On the extreme right is "another buitron in which the Indians mix the ores with their feet, as well as the heaps for the preparation of the reduction". Near the bottom, on the extreme left, is the "chapel where the holy sacri¬fice of the mass is celebrated". Under the first buitron is the "place where they dry the moist ores, called pãpear".

The paper reviews recent investigations of the impact of corrosion on the performance of both plain and coated Swellex rock bolts. It addresses the problems associated with estimating and predicting corrosion rates of friction bolts, and based on field data it suggests an empirical relationship to predict corrosion rates. A review of the necessary qualities for a protective coating leads to recent experience with coated Swellex bolts that suggest that they can contribute to extending the useful life of Swellex bolts in potentially corrosive environments.

Physical Conditions Great Britain The physical conditions in the mines investigated in Great Britain are similar to those found in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, with the important difference that many of the coal seams visited were interspersed by a large number of heavy faults, making the development of a continuous face operation difficult, and in many cases the life of a unit development was exceptionally short, adding to unit cost; but in spite of these difficulties, a great deal has been accomplished in the application of mechanical loading units in a number of the mines in the areas visited. The coal-bearing measures, as in Nova Scotia, consist of shales and sandstones, and in some sections mussel bands overlie the coal seams making roof conditions difficult&apos;. In several mines, the main roof consisted of weak shale bind, being held by a coal roof of varying thickness. This shale bind had a tendency to flow when the coal roof was broken. The floor, in some cases where cutter loaders were operated successfully, consisted of weak, flaky shales with very little resistance and a tendency to disintegrate into powder when broken. The depth of cover under which these mines were operating varied from 250 feet to 2,340 feet, with an average of 1,700 feet. The coal seams varied in height from 3 feet to 8 feet 6 inches, and the gradients from level to 33 per cent. The seams vary in hardness, but all-with the exception of one seam, the &apos;Morrison Busty&apos;- presented a cutting problem similar to that found in Nova Scotia. The structure and cleavage of the coal was well defined and uniform. Some of the seams visited were gassy, ?but the temperature of the workings generally was not in excess of 70°F.

An important problem associated with tandem dragline systems is that of matching the productive capability of individual draglines in the combination. In this paper, a dependence mechanism among draglines in a tandem system is described, and possible consequential problems in a poorly-matched system are defined. The rate of linear advance and the cost of stripping are determined as two major indications for an efficient operation. The proposed decision criteria and the underlying mechanism to select a synchronous couple are introduced and used in simulating tandem dragline systems. The developed model is tested on a hypothetical strip mine where pullback stripping is applied with a tandem dragline system.

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. Abosso Goldfields Limited has been optimizing the comminution circuit at the Damang Mine Operation for the treatment of 100% primary ore. The optimization process started at a base rate of 343 tph when treating primary crushed primary ore, and was increased to above 600 tph with partially crushed primary ore. Abosso Goldfields engaged Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) to assist with the optimization process in 2009 and the two companies have been working together since, to further refine the process. Continuous improvement was achieved through crushing circuit modifications, changes in operating processes and grinding control system utilization. This paper discusses the improvements developed for the increase in milling capacity and improvements in final product size.

1. Scope of project In South Australia, the Western Mining Corporation operates the underground copper and uranium mine Olympic Dam. The deposits concerned are enormous (approx. 570 million tons) and have been mined since 1988. At the end of 1996, Western Mining decided to increase the capacity of Olympic Dam from 85,000 t.p.a. to 200,000 t.p.a. Planning At this point, SIEMAG-GHH Mining Division was asked to carry out a study including the planning of the entire shaft hoisting operations and calculation of the investment and operating costs involved. With the assistance of Australian partners, the study was completed within a single month. The principal points of the study were as follows: ? Planning of the hoisting machinery for 1,375 tons per hour from the surge bin below ground to the discharge bunker above ground. ? Optimisation of the hoisting operation with regard to maximum availability and safety. ? Optimisation of the time schedule to minimise the financing costs of the investment. ? Statement of the investment and operating costs. ? Comparison of the technical data, design and availability of the planned machinery with reference plants. Construction of the plant Following acceptance of the study, the decision was taken within a few weeks to implement it. SIEMAG Transplan GmbH received the order to execute the entire shaft hoisting machinery on the basis of the study submitted. The decisive factors in placing the order were: ? Convincing study, adherence to schedule ? Reference to comparable plants elsewhere ? Reference with regard to availability.

"Asbestos tailings are a typical serpentine, hydrated magnesium silicate, consisting primarily of antigorite and a few per cent of unrecovered fibrous chrysotile. Serpentine has unique thermal properties in that dehydroxylating calcination at 600 to 700°C can yield an amorphous structure in which most of the magnesia is liberated from the original bond with silica and thereby rendered chemically active. The amount of activated magnesia can be quantified by selective leaching with a weak acid such as acetic acid. Many wet processes have been proposed to extract magnesium values from calcined or natural serpentine by means of various acids and their ammonium salts. However, the only commercial utilization of serpentine today is found in dry processes such as the production of fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer .The present paper reviews the physical chemistry of the dehydroxylation of serpentine and also various wet and dry processes in order to provide a general view regarding the chemical transformation of asbestos tailings.IntroductionAsbestos fibers occur as chrysotile, a serpentine polymorph. More than nine tenths of mined asbestos ores consist of massive non-fibrous serpentine, primarily the polymorph antigorite, which is discarded as tailings after fiber extraction. For many decades, Quebec has been a world leader in the production of asbestos fibers. As a result, colossal tonnages of serpentine have accumulated in the Eastern Townships&apos;!&apos;. Serpentine minerals are found in large deposit s throughout the world, and significant research efforts have been made, particularly in Japan and the USSR, mostly in attempts to extract magnesia or silica values therefrom.The chemical composition of serpentine (chrysotile and antigorite) may be ideally expressed as Mg3Si2Os(OH). which corresponds to 43.7% MgO and 43.3% SiO2. Natural serpentines often contain a few per cent of Ni-bearing magnetite and other impurities, and therefore the contents of MgO and Si02are both about 40% or lower.Serpentine (hydrated magnesium silicate) is virtually insoluble in weak acids. However, when dehydroxylated under controlled conditions, &apos; it decomposes to an amorphous state in which magnesia and silica are isolated and chemically active. The magnesia so activated is readily soluble in weak acids. This unique characteristic of calcined serpentine, first discovered in 1942,, has since attracted the attention of innumerable researchers, whence many processes have been proposed."

Foreword While the literature on radium is voluminous, there is no single publication available from Canadian sources which attempts to cover at all fully the world radium industry. The comparatively recent developments in the Wilberforce area, and the consequent arousal of public interest in radium, seemed to call for the publication of such a paper which would be intelligible to the layman. To satisfy this apparent need, the writers submit this paper which contains material derived from various sources, and for which the writers make no claim of originality. Direct references are made throughout the paper to sources of information.

"Worldwide, metal mines are going deeper. For example, in Canada there are six such mechanized mines planning production at 3000 m (10 000 ft). Working at such depths challenges all aspects of mining including the provision of ventilation to supply an equitable working climate for personnel and machinery.This paper explores the overall challenges of supplying ventilation in Canada’s deepest mines and how the volumes required could be minimized. This is essential because it must be remembered that ventilation and refrigeration are not only costly items to supply, but the magnitude of their cost is also very sensitive to the volume supplied. For the primary ventilation system this is obvious because of the cubic relationship between volume and cost.In deep mines, the main function of ventilation is the removal of heat transferred from the strata and generated by the mining machinery, and the air volumes supplied are designed accordingly. The second consideration is the removal of other pollutants that could be harmful to humans such as diesel and explosive fumes. However, the need for ventilation at its present design levels could be reduced. This paper discusses the implications of such technologies as: tele-remote mining and alternatives to diesel equipment on the magnitude of the volume supplied; ventilationon- demand which recognizes ventilation as a costly and limited resource; plus other aspects, such as the benefits of controlled recirculation, local cooling, and possibly heat rejection back to the strata to gain further advantage from new developments.Furthermore, this paper advances the need to be able to design ventilation systems more cost effectively and how such new advances as process simulators can be used in conjunction with ventilation simulators to explore the diverse options that could affect the air volumes required and provide more realistic economic data upon which to base design decisions."

MECHANIZATION During the last fifteen years, numerous attempts have been made to mechanize the operations of loading ore and placing till. It is to be regretted that, to date, little progress has been made in this direction. The comparative efficiency of manual labour in Spain is the factor largely responsible for the failure to cheapen costs by mechanization. The necessity for careful classification of the ore and the need for keeping all openings small also makes the problem one of difficulty. It may be of interest to describe the various attempts at mechanization that have so far been made. CONVEYORS: (1) When stoping by layout III in San Dionisio, a trial was made of transporting the filling by jigging conveyors. This method proved un-economical, as the wall building and spreading of the till could not keep pace with the delivery, with the result that the machinery was idle a great part of the shift. (2) The transport of ore from the working places to the ore-passes by jigging conveyors and belts was also tried. Although more successful than in the case of the fill, the method could not compete with that of hand tramming, principally due to the high cost of (a) maintenance caused by the abrasiveness of pyrites, and (b) labour constantly employed on re-aligning the conveyors owing to the constant settlement of the floor. In a few cases, where a sill floor was being blocked out in virgin ground, the method showed a saving. SCRAPERS: Frequent attempts at loading by scrapers have been made, but again the only success obtained has been in the blocking-out of sill floors. The principal obstacle to the successful application of scraping, other than on the sill floor, has been that the openings, which have to be small, call for a light scraper outfit, whereas, in practice, a heavy scraper and at least a 25 h.p. winch are necessary for handling satisfactorily the ore, which is heavy and which breaks somewhat blockily.

THE H.B. MINE and concentrator are located in the Nelson Mining Division of British Columbia, on the north side of the Sheep Creek valley about seven miles southeast of the town of Salmo. It is an operation of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), which has its metallurgical plants at Trail, about 25 miles west. The property was originally staked about 1907 by Horton and Benson, whose names are commemorated in the designation "H. B." Up until 1927, a considerable amount of development work was done in the upper levels by various companies. Cominco purchased the ?property in 1927 and carried out intermittent work until 1946. Following this, an extensive surface diamond drilling programme and a subsequent underground exploration were undertaken. Sufficient ore was outlined &apos;to warrant the construction of a 1,000: ton concentrator. This was started in April, 1952, and completed by the spring of 1953. However, because of adverse base metal market conditions, operation was deferred until May, 1955.
