Excessive residual stress in Al engine blocks may result in cylinder distortion which reduces engine operating efficiency. As such, neutron diffraction was used to measure residual strain along the Fe liners and Al, in the hoop, radial and axial orientations with respect to the cylinder axis, at the cylinder interbore region. Residual stresses were subsequently calculated using generalized Hooke's law and related to the microstructure along the cylinder bridge. The results suggest that the residual stresses in the Al interbore region are tensile and increased with depth in the axial direction of the cylinder. The increase in residual stress at the bottom of the cylinder coincides with a finer and more uniform microstructure in this region of the cylinder. The refinement in microstructure at the bottom of the cylinder likely increased alloy strength, thereby decreasing this section's susceptibility to distortion. This study successfully quantified the residual stress profiles in a heat treated engine block and related the stress profiles to an as-cast engine block.

Measurements of the settling rates and the rheological behaviour of heavy media formed of fine suspensions in water of each of magnetite, ferrosilicon, and galena have been made. For media ranging from 1.6 to 2.8 specific gravity the settling measurements gave initial settling rates of from 0.5 to 0.01 ?cm. 'Per minute for magnetite; from 4.0 to 0.8 cm. per minute for galena; and from 35 to 1.6 cm. 'Per minute for ferrosilicon. These measurements indicate the ?relative stability of the suspensions and should be helpful in establishing the useful specific gravity range for each medium. Measurements of the consistency of the media were made with a Fann Model 35 rotational viscometer. Aibnormal or non-Newtonian behaviour was observed in the case of each media, the apparent viscosity being dependent upon the rate of shear or the intensity of motion. Measurements were made over the rate of shear range of 10? to 1,000 reciprocal seconds. The apparent viscosities of the magnetite media ranged from 450 down to 4?0 centipoise at 2.30 specific gravity, and from 2,450 down to 700 centipoise at 2.80 specific gravity. In the case of the galena media, the variation was from 40, through a minimum of 6, to 10 centipoise at 2.20 specific gravity, and from 950, through a minimum of 180, to 450 centipoise at 3.6 specific gravity. The ferrosilicon suspensions exhibited apparent viscosities ranging from 42, through a minimum of 5.6, to 9 centipoise at 1.9 specific gravity, and from 160, though a minimum of 35, to 85 centipoise at 2.8 specific gravity. The dependency of apparent viscosity or consistency upon intensity of motion is considered to be of particular significance in applications of heavy media where the medium is in rapid motion.

Hydraulic fracturing and hydraulic shearing techniques are essential for the development of unconventional oil & gas and geothermal resources. Such techniques will also play a key role in the development of CO2 sequestration, and management of high stresses encountered with deep mining. However, the optimal design of hydraulic injections is often limited by continuum treatments of the rock mass without consideration of the influence of the natural fractures present. These may interact with the hydraulic fracture to promote offsets or arrest, or may cause the natural fractures to undergo shear and dilation. Given the limited access to the rock afforded by deep boreholes common to oil & gas and geothermal projects, advanced numerical modeling is critical for understanding key mechanisms and interactions. In this work, we first present a coupled hydromechanical distinct-element model focusing on the propagation of a hydraulic fracture. Normal and shear displacements arising from the generated hydraulic fractures are subsequently integrated into a fracture flow model for detailed analysis of specific flow behaviour and fracture permeability. For this, a scanned 3-D profile of a natural fracture is used to correlate surface roughness to dilation as a function of shearing. Fracture flow is computed at different time steps corresponding to different fracture propagation states and geometries. Modeling results indicate that the opening of a tensile hydraulic fracture is accompanied by millimetre-scale shear displacements associated with slip and wedging between adjacent blocks. This may leads to a mismatch between the upper and lower walls of the fracture if asperities are irregular and strong enough. However, fluid-induced tensile fractures have low Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC), and associated millimetre-scale shear displacements are too small to ensure a significant offset of asperities that prevent a fully-elastic closure when the hydraulic fracture is depressurized. Injection of proppant is thus critical to keeping hydraulic fracture apertures open. Future work is planned that will see the models calibrated against field data including microseismic event locations, magnitudes and source mechanisms, tiltmeter deformations, stress change, and pore pressures.

Abstract-Gahnite, a zinc-bearing spinel, is a resistate mineral that may be used as an indicator mineral of polymetallic deposits in high-grade metamorphic terrain. The Ontario Geological Survey recently completed surficial mapping and sampling programs in the Separation Lake area of northwestern Ontario and Kinniwabi Lake area of northeastern Ontario in which gahnite was recovered from samples of surficial sediments. Ternary plots of the composition (ZnO, MgO, FeO[t]) of gahnite recovered from these surficial studies reveal three distinct groups: Group 1 is characterized by low (< 1 wt%) MgO values; Group 2 by higher (>1 wt%) MgO values; and Group 3 by higher FeO(t) values than Groups 1 and 2. The composition of in situ gahnite recovered from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization, Zn-rich Sedex-type mineralization and peraluminous rare-element mineralized granite and pegmatite also was determined. The composition of the gahnite obtained from surficial samples was compared with that of in situ material. Gahnite from the peraluminous rareelement granite and pegmatite overlapped very well with surficial gahnite of Group 1. Gahnite from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization and Sedex-type mineralization overlapped well with surficial gahnite of Group 2. These results suggest that determination of gahnite composition in indicator mineral surveys may be useful in exploration programs when assessing the mineral potential of a region.

The objective of the Canadian International Development Agency program is to facilitate the efforts of the people of developing countries to achieve self-sustainable economic and social development in accordance with their needs and environment. The British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines (BCMEM) is the executing agency for the four-year Peru Minerals and Metals Public Sector Assistance Project which began in December 1998. The primary beneficiary is the Ministerio de Energía y Minas del Peru (PMEM). The project is designed to address mine health & safety, environmental management and mineral resource information. Project activities currently underway include joint development of: an inspection system, a mine rescue system, an enhanced and e-Commerce capable mineral information website, environmental guidelines for industry and standardized ministry evaluation criteria for environmental impact assessments and closure plans. In addition, reports on management options for mineral concentrate transportation, storage and handling, and on mine reclamation security policy have been delivered at workshops.

Barrick&apos; s Buzwagi copper-gold deposit in Tanzania comprises oxide, saprock and sulphide mineralized zones averaging approximately 0.058oz/t gold, 0.13% total copper and 0.03% cyanide-soluble copper. A comparative evaluation of the project based on two potential flowsheet alternatives is presented. The first flowsheet included a gravityconcentration and carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. The second flowsheet was based on a Gravity-Flotation-CIL plant, which proved to be more economically robust. Selective flotation of copper minerals to produce a saleable copper concentrate proved to be challenging. Detailed characterization of the Buzwagi deposit was carried out through understanding of ore mineralogy, mineral liberation, floatability and selectivity, reagent chemistry and regrinding issues. With this insight, a flotation concentrate of greater than 25% Cu was achieved, recovering a significant amount of copper minerals and tellurides. The overall economics of the project improved significantly with the addition of flotation. Leach tests on gravity and flotation tailings showed an overall increase in gold recovery of approximately 6% for a Gravity-Flotation-CIL plant compared to that for a Gravity-CIL plant.

The Alcan Bayer Process Experimental Centre (BEC) is an essential development tool for the Bauxite & Alumina researchers at the Alcan Arvida Research and Development Centre in Jonquiere, Quebec. Between the laboratory tests and the industrial prototypes or the industrial applications, the BEC is a key element for technology transfers. The Bayer process is the extraction of aluminium oxide (or alumina) from the bauxite ore. The Bayer Experimental Centre&apos;s history and flowsheet are presented. The major pieces of equipment are described. Safety and design considerations are presented. Finally, examples of applications, double digestion and pressure decantation, are briefly described.

"Dofasco began operations in 1912 as a steel foundry located in Hamilton, Ontario. Today, Dofasco is a fully integrated mill that manufactures hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized and tinplate steels. Customers include the automotive, construction, tubular, manufacturing, appliance, packaging and steel ser-vice centre industries. Raw steel production and purchased semi-finished steel processed in1994 was 3.5 million net tonnes. Dofasco employs 7300 people at its Hamilton facility.Environmental management at Dofasco is guided by its environment policy and associated commitments. This paper discusses Dofasco’s responsibility for its products as it relates to these commitments. This paper presents the fundamental study of the temperature distribution in a reforming planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using mathematical modeling and experimental testing approaches at Versa Power Systems (VPS). In order to investigate the on-cell temperature distribution under high rates of Natural Gas direct internal reforming (DIR), both the computer simulation approach and the experimental testing approach have been developed. In this work, comprehensive in-house DIR and SOFC models were developed and employed for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based 3D computer simulation. The current SOFC module has been corrected to take into account both the on-cell electrical leaking effect and the stack stage structural resistance. Meanwhile, an instrumented single-cell test jig with multiple thermocouples was built, and a series of experimental tests were performed at various conditions. The numerical results based on the single-cell jigs are in very good agreement with the physical test results.

ABSTRACT The settling, shear strength, and index properties of oil sands fines-sand mixture tailings (FSMT) for a wide range of solids and fines content are investigated. Results indicate that the liquid limit of FSMT obeys a linear mixture law. The fines-water ratio (FWR) governs the permeability of composite tailings (CT) and CT with comparable geotechnical behaviour can be produced from the same initial FWR mixtures. A phosphogypsum (PG) dosage > 900 mg/kg does not improve the dewatering behaviour of CT. The undrained shear strength of FSMT at the liquid limit is approximately 2.4 kPa, but is dependent on fines content at the plastic limit.

In this paper, it is investigated how different types of automation would affect the safety for workers in asphalt paving. The risk for the workers on road construction sites is consistently high in comparison to the average risk of the working population. Automation has been suggested as an alternative for improving the safety in roadside construction assuming that removing workers will inherently eliminate the risk of them being injured. In this paper, the potential for improving the safety using automation is analyzed in detail. By investigating accident statistics and understanding the type of accidents that appear, several different automated functions for increased safety are proposed and described. Based on available statistics, it is possible to estimate the safety benefit, as the reduction in fatalities, for several of the proposed functions. The highest safety benefit would be achieved by automating the road traffic driving through the work zones. This has the potential of reducing the total number of road worker fatalities with over 30 %. In addition, it would decrease the number of road traffic accidents in work zones. Automation of construction machinery and dump-trucks also has the potential to increase the safety.

ABSTRACT Stope backfilling is a common operation in many underground mines, which requires a barricade at the base of the stope near the drift entrance to retain the backfill in place. In this paper, the distribution of pore-water pressure in barricades made of waste rock is analyzed. An analytical solution is introduced and applied to estimate the pore-water pressure along the base and full height of the barricade. Results show that the analytical solution generally accurately predicts the distribution of pore-water pressure obtained from the numerical calculations, especially in the upstream part of the barricade, where it is most critical.

Coal mining and railway transportation are so closely en-twined and so dependent one upon the other that the failure of one would mean the total collapse of the other. With this indisputable fact in mind, there is no doubt that the operator of each is deeply interested in the other&apos;s success. Railway transportation began at the mouth of a coal mine. The first railway car was the English coal-wagon, a crude box on four wooden trowlets, running on wooden rails and holding 1,600 pounds. This was operated by gravity or horse-power in England to convey coal from the mines to the rivers. The first coal-cars used on Nova Scotia railways were of 4 tons capacity with side doors and "V" shaped centres. Then followed flat-bottom, 4-ton cars that operated on tipples, the car bei.ng held in tipple by a chain passing over the top and fastened on either side. Next came the 6-ton car with drop-bottoms, then the 10, 15, 30-ton cars, and now the modern 50 and 100-ton steel cars, equipped with automatic couplers, brakes, and rachet dumping device. Contrast the first coal-car with a modern luxurious pull-man or a I 00-ton coal and ore car, and you have a record of progress in railway transportation. The development of the steam locomotive was no doubt the greatest factor in this progress, but let us not forget that the foundation of all industrial development was and is coal. and that development in mining and railway transportation should keep abreast.

The rheology artificial mixtures of bitumen with fine quartz of varying bitumen content, as well as actual oil sand ores, was investigated under different physicochemical conditions (pH, temperature). All rheological measurements were conducted using a Haake Rotovisco VT550 rotational viscometer, connected to a fixture specifically designed to measure properties of settling suspensions. It was found that at low bitumen contents (1 %, wt.) the pH of the slurries was the most important parameter that controlled the rheology of quartz-bitumen slurries. At higher bitumen contents (10%, wt.), it was a combination of high temperature and high pH that gave the lowest apparent viscosities and yield stresses of the model mixtures. These model observations correlated well with the rheology data obtained for slurries of actual oil sand ores. The overall results were discussed in terms of aggregation-dispersion phenomena between bitumen and mineral particles.

"A theoretical framework based on a detailed analysis of mine operations data from an oil sands mine in northern Alberta and the static simulation of truck cycle times are developed, verified, and validated in this paper. Implementation of this framework provides better results than existing tools that rely solely on manufacturer data. This, therefore, aids in efficient equipment planning for the life of the mine. The use of this framework to modify existing productivity curve estimation methods currently in use at the mine site is also proposed. This method replaces “loaded flat haul” with “loaded effective flat haul” in the productivity estimation. More than a decade ago, CANMET management recognized the need to make better use of existing technological information in mining and extractive metallurgy-two fields basic to the economic well-being of Canada. There were at that time no indexes or files dedicated to disseminating technical information for the many minerals mined and processed in Canada, including coal. CANMET, with the nation&apos;s largest research and library resources in the minerals field, was in a unique position to fill this need. Initial efforts were concentrated on building a mining file, beginning with identification of world sources of published information, development of a special thesaurus of terms for language control and adoption of a manual indexing/retrieval system. By early 1973, this file held 8,300 references, with source, abstract and keywords given for each reference. In mid-1973, operations were computerized. Software for indexing and retrieval by batch mode was written by CANMET staff to utilize the hardware facilities of EMR&apos;s Computer Science Centre. The resulting MINTEC file-one of the few files of technological information produced in Canada-is the basis for the national literature search service in mining offered by CANMET. Attention is now focussed on building a sister-file in extractive metallurgy using the system already developed. Published information sources have been identified and a thesaurus of terms is being compiled and tested. The software developed for CANMET&apos;s file-building operations has several features, including the selective dissemination of information and production from magnetic tape of photo ready copy for publication, as in a bi-monthly abstracts journal.

"Attempts have been made to produce hardened structures of a pseudomorphic type in various carbon and alloy steels. In order to obtain martensite with a fine distribution of cementite, an initial structure of fine lamellar or nodular pearlite is required; this may be obtained by conventional means. This is followed by partial austenitization and quenching.Two methods have been tried to induce partial austenitization:(a) A resistance (direct current) heating method involving rapid entry into the austenite field.(b) A new method, described as the ""threshold"" technique, involving homogenization of temperature just below A 1, followed by entry into the austenite field; two furnaces are required.The resulting structures have been examined for microstructures, hardness, tensile, and impact values. The tensile properties are comparable with those obtainable by conventional treatment methods. Impact values are disappointing, but this is explainable from the nature of the manifold changes occurring."

"The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc. developed a guide of minimum standards for reporting exploration results, mineral resources, and mineral reserves for the purpose of informing the general public. The SME Guide has been adopted by the Society.History1. In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), Inc., the President of SME formed Working Party #79, Ore Reserve Definition, with the mission to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration results, resources, and reserves. A Subcommittee was appointed by the Working Party to draft these guidelines and submit recommendations to SME. The Subcommittee's recommendations were published by SME in the April 1991 issue of ""Mining Engineering"", and as a document entitled ""A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, Resources, and Reserves"" (the SME Guide) in January 1992. Work continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996, when Working Party #79 was renamed the SME Resources and Reserves Committee and became a standing committee.In 1994, the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI) started a concerted international effort to create a set of international definitions for reporting mineral resources and mineral reserves. An ad-hoc International Definitions Group was formed, with representatives from mining and metallurgical institutions from the United States (SME), Australia (AusIMM), Canada (CIM), the United Kingdom (IMM) and South Africa (SAIMM). A major breakthrough came on October 18, 1997 when the CMMI International Definitions Group met in Denver, Colorado and reached a provisional agreement (the Denver Accord) on definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Concurrently, and since 1992, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) was developing an international framework classification for mineral resources and mineral reserves. Starting in October 1998, joint meetings were held in Geneva between the CMMI International Definitions Group and the UN-ECE Task Force, resulting in agreement to incorporate the CMMI definitions into the UN framework classification."

FROM 1921 to 1939, the aeroplane played an increasingly important role in Canadian prospecting and mine development. This service has been interrupted by the war, but undoubtedly it will be accelerated in the postwar years, if suitable aircraft are available. The purpose of this paper will be to review the uses to which the aeroplane has been put in prospecting and development in the past, and its future possibilities as an aid in prospecting. If by review, and deduction, we get a clear picture of what we expect the prospecting plane to do, we may be able to arrive at a very close approximation of its required characteristics and, from this, an idea of costs. &apos;Function&apos; is defined as the mode of action by which it (the aeroplane) fulfills its purpose. We will endeavour, therefore, first to find what this purpose is, or should be, so that our expectations will not be too limited nor too great-and then find, by analysis, what performance we require in an aeroplane to meet our reasonable expectations at an economic price.
