Over the last thirty years production of heavy minerals from Australian deposits has dominated the world market. The main incentive has been to suoply the raw material for titanium dioxide based pigments. These ~ninerals include ilmenite, rutile, leticoxene and more recently, synthetic rutile. Inevitably the viabilit/ of developing placer type deposits has seen influenced by other heavy minerals present, such as zircon and monazite, but these have been of secondary importance. For most of the sixties and seventies, Australia supplied the 'najority of free world rutile and zircon, and a large proportion of the ilmenite. With the run-down of rutile- rich reserves in eastern Australia, the emphasis has s:iifted in several countries, including Australia, to fill }the gap with i l Wen i to and its derivatives, leucoxene, synthetic rutile and titanium rich slag. over the next 15 - 20 years, as high grade beach placers in Western Australia are mined out, less traditional sources for mineral sands products will be opened up. Low grade placers (particularly those dominated by ilmenite) will be reassessed in Australia, U.S.A., Africa and Asia, and exploration will shift from beach and dune environment, to heavy mineral concentrations in alluvials, lake deposits and continental shelf deposits. At the same time, production of anatase and bastnaesite will be expanded, as required, from the huge resources contained in carbonatites in 3razil, U.S.A. and China.

Laboratory scale simulation experiments show that the adsorption capacity of Au(CN)Z- on activated carbon in the presence of organic plant contaminants is dependent on the particle size of the carbon. This observation suggests that fine carbon in a CIP contactor can protect coarse CIP carbon from fouling in a dirty CIP plant. A preliminary test of this concept was made using fine lignite coal as the organic scavenger in the presence of the CIP carbon Calgon GRC22 in an alkaline cyanide solution containing Teric 401, sodium ethyl xanthate and kerosene.

Mining in Guyana dates back into antiquity and a brief history of gold and diamond mining and of the small-scale miner, the pork-knocker, is given. The gold and diamond deposits found on the beds and in the flats of old and present rivers and the current methods of investiga- ting these deposits are briefly described. Methods of mining these deposits including the small-scale hand methods of pitting and diving with or without helmets are also briefly described. 'The small-scale method of dredging using a suction dredge in conjunction with a diver is described in more detail, from its develop- ment to current practice, without giving too much mechanical and technical details. The organisation of the industry and the mining titles, laws and policy relating thereto are reviewed. A brief account is given of the socio- economic role of the industry. Conclusions are made regarding the need for improvements in existing equipment and financing and for incentives to stimulate production. The future outlook of the industry is con- sidered.

Multiple regression analysis applied to ventilation records of stopes on the Witwatersrand showed that it was possible to estimate the temperature increase per 100 ft for a new stope with a standard deviation of 0' 5°F. The analysis also threw light on the relative effect on this estimate of five different factors.Application of the analysis of variance technique to a factorialexperiment on the production of dust during rock drilling showed that the effects of air and water pressure were quite small but also showed that the between-machine variation was unexpectedly large.Analysis of variance also proved a valuable means for assessing the bias and random error variation of aneroid barometers used in pressure surveys.INTRODUCTIONThree examples are discussed to illustrate the use of the techniques of "analysis of variance" and "multiple regression" in research on the ventilation of gold mines. Although the techniques are basically similar their application to each example has a slightly different emphasis and the examples were chosen for this reason. The variation ofemphasis is as follows.1. Temperature increases in stapes. This work was undertaken as a preliminary to possible extensive controlled experimentation (Lambrechts, 1959). Data collected in routine work by the mine ventilation personnel were used for analysis and no specific experiments were carried out. The main object was to see whether such data could provide any strong pointers to factors which might be worthy ofmore careful study and to factors which could initially be ignored. Of course, there was hope that the study might provide an empirical formula for rough forecasts.

Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. Prospecting in arid terrain can produce substantial environmental impacts, comparable to or greater in magnitude than the impacts associated with actual mining or petroleum production. Impacts are likely to be particularly severe where prospecting involves intensive geophysical exploration, especially in areas which have escaped degradation by other land uses such as pastoralism. With appropriate environmental planning and management, however, the environmental impacts of prospecting in arid terrain can be greatly reduced and mitigated, at low cost. In many countries, prospecting licences, exploration leases and associated tenements now carry a range of conditions relating to environmental protection. The assessment, avoidance and mitigation of environmental impacts is therefore an important component of and-zone exploration. My aim here is to give an overview of some of the main aspects of an environmental planning and management (EPM) programme for prospecting in arid terrain (PAT). Detailed operational prescriptions for environmental protection procedures are necessarily specific to particular areas and types of prospecting: see. e.g., Buckley (1982a, 1984, 1985a, 1986a), Klepacki et al. (1985) and Stone (1986). The intention here is to provide a checklist rather than a recipe book: as an aid in incorporating environmental aspects into the overall planning and management of an exploration programme, and in liaison with company environmental staff, consultants and regulatory bodies. I also hope to show that whilst some of the techniques used in particular environmental disciplines certainly require specialist expertise, the overall design of an EPM programme is not in the least esoteric, but simply an exercise in straightforward common sense. Perhaps this paper could be subtitled: "Demystifying environmental Planning".

The, Ore-bodies.-The ore-bodies of the North mine, North Broken Hill Ltd.; consist of two lenses, connected by a narrow neck of mineralized country. They pitch at an angle of 40° in an easterly direction and dip north at 60° to the horizontal. The southern ore-body, on a horizontal plane, has a total maximum length of 800 feet and in one place attains a width of 230 feet, whilst the northern orebody has a maximum'length of 600 feet and a maximum width of 80 feet.

Attention to the design of facilities for drainage, of both surface water and seepage, made it possible to attain, for a qam impounding residues from a concentrating mill, a more stable sand wall which can eventually be carried to a greater height.EXPERIENCE WITH No. 1 DAMResidue from the lead zinc concentrating mill, which treats the ore from the Rosebery and Hercules Mines, was pumped 3,600 ft. through a 5-in. diameter woodstave pipeline to the site of the dam. It was formerly delivered through a 4-in. steel pipeline.State laws prevent the residue being discharged to waste into the Stitt River. Furthermore, as a pyritic residue it is a potential source of sulphur.Between 1936 and 1956 more than 1,000,000 tons. of residue was paddocked. The run-of-mill product was roughly classified at the dam in a 6-ft. diameter cone classifier and the sand fraction was pumped by a 3-in. pump to the front wall of the dam across a shallow valley. THE object of this paper is to offer some suggestions to assist metallurgists to supervise the operations of flotation plants. We do not yet thoroughly understand what "flotation" is or "why minerals float" and all attempts that have been made to explain the phenomena have been based on theory or imagination, and have not been capable of substantiation by practical demonstration, or even by laboratory tests; but it is wellknown that particular minerals will float in a liquid under certain specified conditions, and that some other minerals will not float under those conditions, and that, if a mixture of the two classes of minerals be subjected to those conditions, there will be separation of the minerals, of which one class will float and the other will remain unfloated as a residue. The duty of the flotation expert is to so control the operations and the conditions of the liquor as to obtain the best commercial result from the ore he is treating. The chief controlling factors in a flotation plant appear to fall under the following eight headings, all of which are important:1. Crushing.2. Rate and regularity of feed.3. Density of pulp.4. Temperature.5. Addition agents.6. Condition of circuit liquor.7. Agitation.8. Aeration.

Every step on the path from the mine to the smelter invites a comparison between material inputs on one side and outputs plus accumulation on the other. Or put simply, between what you think you have produced with what you find you have at hand. The discrepancy between these sets of comparisons is the error. Following that error in a systematic and objective manner is a way to improve the mineÆs measurement systems, that in turn leads to more accurate accounting for ores, metals and concentrates. Because the control of production is so tightly coupled with the accounting of materials, any lasting improvements in materials accounting will benefit the predictions of materials movements and quality. This translates to more reliable planning and scheduling in stockpile management, logistics, shipping and marketing. The statistical tools described are direct adaptations from the long-standing methods used to maintain the quality of manufactured product in the discrete parts industries. Their use in the process industries, of which mining is one, requires some care owing to the continuous nature of ore extraction and its variable properties. The tools can be used for problem diagnostics and as early warning systems. In common practice many professional staff, in attempting to get a perfect reconciliation between expected and observed results, try to explain away the error or bury it completely. The methodology advocated here requires a different mindset because the error must be given pre-eminence for lasting improvement to be realised.

The oxidation of nickel sulphide and copper sulphide concentrates, and coal, has been studied under non-ignition and ignition conditions using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetry (TG). The non-ignition reaction was favoured by slow heating rates < 10°C min-1), low masses < 10 mg) and an air atmosphere. Under these conditions, the typical stepwise oxidations of the various sulphide minerals present in the concentrate were observed as resolved exothermic peaks in the DTA curves and weight losses in the TG curves. Above a heating rate of 10°C min-1 , sample masses in excess of 10 mg and an oxygen atmosphere, an ignition reaction was induced, as indicated by a major high energy exotherm in the DTA curve and a major rapid weight loss in the TG curve. The ignition temperatures of the minerals under ignition conditions, found for 15 mg samples heated at 20°C min-1, were 434°C for the nickel sulphide concentrate, 372°C for the copper sulphide concentrate, and 230°C for the coal. By plotting a curve for mass against ignition temperature at constant heating rate and extrapolationto zero mass, a value of 470°C was obtained for the mass independent ignition temperature of the nickel sulphide concentrate. Ignition temperatures and extents of reaction at various temperatures were obtained using the TG technique in a novel manner which produced heating rates of 4500°C min-1. Under ignition conditions, the oxidations approximate to flash smelting conditions.

The source and origins of the hydrothermal fluid of orogenic, or quartz-vein lode-gold deposits remain uncertain and disputed: Resolution would likely have a significant affect on exploration strategy. The gold-carrying fluid is interpreted to be a low-salinity mixed aqueous-carbonic fluid of near ambient pH and redox state, that may be derived either magmatically through crystallisation of granites at depth in the crust or through metamorphic reactions in a range of rock types. Classic isotope and geochemical tracers of fluid source have not differentiated these possibilities and have produced conflicting conclusions. Mass balance calculations show that fluid composition will be modified by wallrock reaction between source and deposit, and tracers should not be expected to give clear indications of fluid source. Fluid oxidation state can also be modified along flow paths. Tracers should be interpreted with care and with view to possible modification. Modelling of full flow paths and examination of the hydrothermal histories of proposed source rocks may be alternative approaches to determining fluid source.

Today, most organisations are familiar with the pressure to increase their effectiveness and efficiency, regardless of the nature of their business. Cost cutting and increased productivity are the main themes of many initiatives to ensure the profitability of operations and, ultimately, shareholder satisfaction. It is well known that the cost of comminution to liberate minerals such as gold from their respective ores is a major expense for mines. Comminution costs consist predominantly of grinding balls and electricity. However, there are no national or international standard specifications for grinding balls û on which a single mine may spend several million dollars per month. In addition, in the past mines generally did not specify the minimum requirements when purchasing grinding balls from suppliers. The result is that every supplier has its own grinding ball recipe (regarding chemistry and heat treatment), and is under no pressure to implement a quality assurance plan to ensure that a consistent product is delivered. The resulting variation in the quality of grinding balls leads to increased steel consumption rates and hence increased milling costs. A more stringent quality plan will generally not be welcomed by suppliers since this may entail further investments and/or reduce the production rate. In a sense, suppliers benefit from poor quality grinding balls as this leads to increased sales. Perhaps the main problem is a lack of understanding of the factors that influence grinding ball performance. This paper will describe the factors that influence the wear rate of grinding balls from both a microstructural perspective and a mill perspective. In addition, some insights are provided on the different grinding balls available and ways that users can verify their quality.

Various factors influence the exploration geologist or geochemist in his choice of.an analytical method for gold and other elements which may help him find the elusive gold deposit. One of the first decisions the geologist must make is the nature of sample media to collect for his survey. Needless to say there are many media available depending on the situation. These include rocks, soils, heavy mineral concentrates (from overburden drilling and panned concentrates), humus, vegetation, water, lake bottom sediments, stream sediments, etc. The choice of the sample media will depend to a large degree on the state of development of the particular project from grassroots to mine feasibility. The nature of the geological information required will affect which media and which analytical technique should be chosen for the analysis. Valid sampling from the initial sample collection, preparation and subsampling aspects may also help to determine which analytical procedure is best. Cost and turnaround time are of prime. importance to the explorationist, as it should be, however, these aspects should not be detached from receiving accurate and reliable results.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Palmarejo mine, located within the Mexican state of Chihuahua, contains a complex mix of electrum, native silver, silver sulfides and silver chlorides. This paper presents a case study that describes the selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of silver and gold from this ore. Process circuit feasibility study modelling, metallurgical test work and engineering studies are outlined. Options considered to optimise the recovery of the contained silver and gold are compared, based upon cost, operability, recovery and engineering aspects. Concentration by flotation was found to be the preferred primary recovery route. Intensive leaching of the flotation concentrate resulted in solution grades sufficient to allow direct electrowinning to be evaluated against the more traditional Merrill Crowe process. The flotation tailings stream is processed through a separate leaching stage as there is sufficient economic metal extractable from this stream. The processing flow sheet, which is designed to maximise the recovery from both the flotation concentrate and tailings, and to utilise a common metal production facility, is presented.

Stratigraphic correlations across the Mur- phy Tectonic Ridge are crucial to regional corr. elations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River areas. Recent work in the Westmoreland and surrounding areas has substantiated the earlier general correlations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River sequences. The Mount Isa and McArthur Groups, and their equivalents, remain prime prospecting targets for major lead-zinc deposits of the Mount Isa and R.Y.C. type. A prospective area for Redbank-type copper mineralization is suggested.

Shortwall continuous mining as first introduced at Burwood colliery, and currently being used at John Darling, Lambton, and Corrimal collieries, is a method of coal winning which was pioneered in the Newcastle district. The system uses individual hydraulic self-advancing chocks for roof support and the coal winning operation is by continuous miners and shuttle cars. Where physical conditions are suitable the system provides a safe, efficient and economically viable basis for pillar extraction. Shortwall operations have been conducted successfully in the Victoria and Dudley seam, near the coastal fringe of the Newcastle district and are now being tried out in the more difficult conditions of the Bulli seam in the Illawarra district.

Accidents in open pit mining have a high cost in lost time of person- nel, damage to equipment and installations, and lost production. The realities of export competition require that Mine Management sig- nificantly reduce the costs associated with accidents and workplace ill-health. Newer management approaches are proving effective in reducing the Total Cost of Risk through a strucured Occupational Health and Safety Programme exhibiting the following features: ò Formal Company Policy ò Accountability for OH&S performance clearly designated to each level of management and supervision ò Effective utilisation of a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Co- Ordinator and a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Adviser ò Development of realistic OH&S Objectives ò Training of Management, Supervision and Workforce in Occupa- tional Health and Safety ò Development and adoption of Safe Work Practices and Procedures ò Effective employee selection procedures, control of Contractors ò Monitoring of the health of the workforce ò Collection, recording and distributing information on all Mine inci- dents, accidents, injuries and damage ò Ensuring that the Mine environment is healthy and safe ò Effective Emergency Procedures to deal with injury, fire, rescue and other situations of risk ò Controlling those Mine hazards which cannot be removed ò Adopting a high standard of Occupational Rehabilitation ò On-going visible Management participation in the programme to ensure that momentum is developed and maintained. This approach requires that Occupational Health and Safety be given equal status with product quality, maintenance of plant and output per- formance; its implementation is rewarded with improved morale and major cost reductions.

Although the flotation cell has been under continuous development over the past 80 years, an understanding of the precise roles of a cell in produc- ing the flotation result had evolved slowly. In fact, detailed studies of cell dynamics began only in the 1940s when flotation practice had almost reached the half-century mark. The earliest generalizations related cell capacity to power intensity (hp/vol- ume) (Rose, 1946), and specific operating features such as aeration and power ' consumption to impeller submergence and operating speed (Read, 1933). In the 1950s hydrodynamic characterization of cells through power coefficients and air flow numbers began (Arbiter and Harris, 1961) and has continued to the present, with increasing industrial use of these concepts (Degner, 1982; Degner and Treweek, 1976). Liquid flow measurements in Wemco cells (Degner, 1982) made liquid flow numbers and turnover frequencies available for more complete under- standing of cell dynamics. The present overview of flotation technology is a critique of cell design. The cell process represents the interactions between cell dynam- ics, cell geometry, and ores, with the latter prepared for that interaction through size reduction and reagent treatment. While previous invest- igations of flotation cells have accepted all cell designs uncrit- ically, the present study considers the physical process components that an effective cell must provide, and then compares a limited number of

Mine geologists have access to an economic mineral deposit, production parameters and secure exploitation title. They are well placed to understand ore formation and should contribute to the effective exploration of company mine property. Application of their special skills has been curbed by pre-occupation with production duties and by company re-engineering, including staff reductions. Contributions to exploration have been diminished and personal development inhibited. Modified management is required. Participation in mineral system studies and in exploration research comprise part of the basis for the re-emergence of mine geologists on the exploration scene. Changes in investment strategies in the minerals industry may create new employment opportunities. With regard to estimation of resources and reserves, the competence of practitioners who are incapable of disclosing their methods in transparent terms is under question. Ethical standards are also under public scrutiny because of some notable malpractice. Independent auditing may hecome more intrusive. While understandable in a market context, it reflects poorly on the profession. More substantial effort in public communications can improve the credihility ofthe industry and equip practising mine ceolouists for snider responsihility.
