Airborne geophysics and geomatics is at a crossroads as to whether it remains a viable mapping tool, both technically and commercially, and broadens its potential for new applications (eg environmental monitoring, civil engineering and precision farming). The use of small and stable multisensor aerial platforms to conduct highly flexible surveys flown at a low/reasonable cost of operation is a recurrent wish of many stakeholders in the natural resources exploration and mining industry. Through its Fly Light Airborne Geophysics research program, EXIGE and partners have pushed the development and testing of two new airborne carriers with unique capabilities for geo-surveys: GyroLAG’s gyrocopter and Infotron’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). These carriers are the next generation of versatile and innovative aerial vehicles for remote sensing and monitoring. They are rotary, smart tailored, ultra-high resolution manned (gyrocopter) or autonomous (UAV) airborne platforms that combine the merits of dense data sampling, accurate position location, very low clearance above ground or sea level, slow speed, interchangeable and combined multiple geo-sensors, automatic data quality control and real-time quality assurance. They also have the benefits of being highly efficient, cost-effective, commercially attractive, safe, reliable and easy to deploy and operate. Their technical specifications and multiple advantages compared to traditional aircraft and/or ground crews are presented in this paper. Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.

The Wamum and Idzan Creeks Prospect, located 79km W of Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG) was discovered by the exploration arm of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Pty Ltd (CRAE). The detailed surface exploration and 11 vertical holes drilled by CRAE, combined with the recent work by Highlands Gold Limited, indicate the occurrence of porphyry copper-gold mineral- isation and associated alteration. The prospect occurs within andesitic volcanics of the Middle Miocene Langimar Beds. It is bounded by NE trending faults to the NW and SE. The alteration and mineral- isation is hosted in the andesitic tuffs adjacent to high level quartz diorite and hornblende diorite stocks. A NW trend to alteration and mineralisation is obvious in Wamum and Idzan Creeks. The main alteration type is propylitic with minor zones of potassic alteration. A late sericite-quartz-kaolinite-pyrite alteration overprinted the earlier alteration and mineralisation. Copper and gold mineralisation is related to a quartz-carbonate-chalcopyr-ite-pyrite (¦ bornite) vein stockwork and biotite ¦ K-feldspar alteration. The mineralisation system at Wamum and Idzan creeks is low in total sulphides. It is considered as a high- level fracture-controlled system with limited low grade Cu-Au mineralisation.

Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount lVIorgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operation, the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be ineluded, as it is necessary to understand the eonditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. This paper is intended as a review from a planner's viewpoint, of the relationship between town and country planning, a primarily government activity, and the minerals industry, which, with the exception of coal, is a largely private enterprise activity. The paper first considers the nature of the system of planning in New Zealand, and the objectives sought by planners in relation to minerals are discussed. The reasons why these objectives are not generally being achieved are investigated. A final section deals with the gap between objectives and achievement, and suggests a number of ways in which this gap may be narrowed.

Since 2001, the AMIRA P420 gold processing technology project series has been studying the recovery of gold using gravity devices, with particular emphasis on the centrifugal units, Knelson and Falcon concentrators. The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

The quality of iron ore fines have been deteriorating, which has affected sinter quality and productivity adversely. New pretreatment and sintering technologies are therefore required to tackle the gradual change in the quality of iron ore fines. In the sintering process, iron ore fines are first granulated with fluxes such as limestone and coke breeze, and are then loaded and fired in a sinter machine. Sinter productivity and quality are heavily influenced by the reactions occurring in the sintering bed. Hence fundamental understanding of these high temperature properties of ores is urgently needed.Formation of initial sinter melt, penetration and assimilation of nucleus particles by the initial melt, and consolidation and final solidification of final sinter melt are believed to be the key sintering reactions. The assimilation and penetration phenomena have been studied separately in the literature with model particles and diffusion couples and are therefore difficult to relate to sinter quality. In addition, the effect of ore mineralogy has not been studied in detail.In this study, tablets consisting of coarse particles from various iron ore fines as nucleus particles and chemical reagents as adhering fines were made and fired under various sintering conditions to investigate the penetration and assimilation behaviour simultaneously. The degree of assimilation, pore structure, compressive strength of the resultant analogue sinters were evaluated and the relationship between sinter strength and ore characteristics was further discussed. The nucleus particles from Ores A and B were found to be more porous and assimilated more readily with sinter melt, resulting in a viscous melt and a macro-porous sinter structure. The nucleus particles from Ores C and D on the other hand, assimilated less readily with sinter melt, resulting in a fluid melt and a denser sinter structure. A general outline of the significant features in the quality and manufacture of the more common refractories is given. Where possible, linkage between quality development and control and service applicationhas been shown and explained. INTRODUCTIONThe refractory industry is no stranger to change. New processes and revision of old processes in other industries are the harbinger of new and revised products in refractories.Few of the changes are dramatic; generally they are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. New developments are additional to, and inclusive of, established practice.Therefore in this paper it is necessary to repeat much of what is already known in order to show the development taking place.FIRECLAY REFRACTORIESGeneral technology Fireclay refractories are the most common, the most varied and the most versatile of all refractories. Virtually any composition of silica and alumina up to the composition of kaolin is possible. For purposes of comparison they may be classified in the Continental fashion in accordance with chemical composition or in the American way according to "duty". That the two methods are equivalent is shown by an inspection of the alumina-silica diagram of Bbwen and Greig (1924). 'Fireclay refractories are composed of a glassy and a crystalline component derived from the chemical and physical nature of the raw materials used in their manufacture.

The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. Fosterville gold mine recently celebrated production of its one millionth ounce of gold based firmly within a history of refractory sulfide gold mining. Compared with other Victorian gold mines, the disseminated nature of the sulfide gold is a deposit style with low estimation variance combined with established processes to accurately delineate the controlling structures. The systems in place had been established and have worked effectively for the majority of the one million produced ounces.By the end of 2014, diamond drill campaigns targeting the lower Phoenix orebody at depths of 800 m below surface began showing a change to the nature of the gold within the deposit. Coarse visible gold within 0.5–2 m thick quartz carbonate veins were being intersected with regularity showing the emergence of a different zone of gold mineralisation.Data about the new and exciting discovery couldn’t be gathered fast enough, however, established systems and processes throughout the geology and processing departments were not developed to handle a coarse gold environment. Change would be commensurate with the size and scale of the discovery, and new learnings would need to be implemented quickly to keep in front of a mining schedule that was focused on producing tonnes due to the dropping grades of the sulfide ore.Gold assays being returned were showing that the gold nature was different to those of other Victorian deposits. Comparative to the highly nuggety nature of gold found in other Victorian goldfields, the fine grained gold accumulations were dispersed in relatively consistent narrow linear trends grading consistently into the hundreds of grams per tonne. New drill intersections were being returned by the day and research to find developed orebodies that had published information into how to handle such a rapid change yielded few examples.The challenge was to review and set new standards with regards to handling an orebody that transitioned the very nature of the gold being mined. This involved reviewing all steps in the estimation process including data capture and quality control and quality assurance through to mineral liberation through the mill. Difficulties also involved finding analogous orebodies that consisted of both free milling and refractory ores that were dealing with drill assays that were measured as percentages of gold.CITATION:Phillips, N, 2017. Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. With increasing depth, stresses and stress phenomena are becoming more important considerations in Australian coal mining.A large number of compressive and tensile strength tests was made on coal and rock cubes cut from samples taken in various Australian collieries. In addition, an empirical impact strength test was carriedout on fragments of the same samples, to obtain a correlation with compressive strength.In one colliery, flat-jack measurements were taken to assess stresses in coal ribs and in the roof.INTRODUCTIONBy world standards, some of the New South Wales collieries are approaching depths of cover considered a maximum for bord and pillar the normal Australian coal mining method. Several South Coast collieries are winning coal at depths of about 1500 ft., and future operations are being planned at deeper cover. Some areas of these deep workings produce considerable quantities of seam gas.Phenomena associated with high stress and copious gas under pressure in the seam violent phenoma presenting a danger and a nuisance in mine working - have occasionally occurred, and the phenomena are being investigated as a whole (Hargraves, 1958), and separately as a gas problem (Bolt and Innes, 1959; Hargraves, 1962) and as a stress problem. Best practice gold (Au) recovery is not an accident. It is the result of proper operation of the adsorption circuit using good quality activated carbon. A conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot process carbon fouled with floatation chemicals and achieve best practice gold recovery. A high temperature, controlled atmosphere carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln is required. Carbon circuit design allows for low quality carbon by increasing the carbon advance rate, carbon inventory and setting an easily achieved and commercially prudent solution tails target of typically 0.02 ppm Au. These design criteria are important to ensure the commercial success of the gold operation in the first instance. Most carbon ‘regeneration’ kilns will produce carbon of sufficient quality to achieve a 0.02 ppm Au solution tail in the absence of flotation reagents.Best practice recovery is considered less than 0.005 ppm Au in solution reporting to tails. If the carbon is heavily fouled, as it will be if used for flotation leach circuits, then a conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot achieve world’s best practice recovery no matter how much carbon is advanced. World’s best practice gold recovery requires a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln and the whole of the carbon circuit operated optimally.The competing reactions occurring in a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln are presented and discussed in terms of kiln design and operation. New industrial and laboratory findings are presented to fill gaps in the body of knowledge and identify that a large reduction in residence time at temperature will not significantly impair reactivation, but can significantly reduce the size and cost of the kiln or permit significantly increased carbon throughput.The carbon circuit performance is modelled in terms of gold adsorption, as a function of carbon reactivation using ‘simulation of carbon-in-leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits’ (SIMCIL). An optimum carbon advance rate is identified as a function of optimum carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln operation to achieve 0.005 ppm Au in the tails solution. Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.
