In coal room and pillar, and pillar extraction panels, the sidewall conditions were investigated based on underground measurements and numerical simulations. Three-dimensional linear elastic models provided a useful and quick prediction of the amount of sidewall spalling. However, more complex constitutive models were required to simulate more accurately the extent of fracturing and its effect on the stress re-distribution. The input parameters of a Mohr-Coulomb model were determined by back-analysis of underground measurements, and the effect of the depth of the workings and the time dependent occcurrence of coal pillar fracturing were analyzed.

The problems arising in the excavation of hard rocks with the use of mechanical tools consist chiefly in a slow advance rate accompanied by an intensive wear due to the toughness and abrasiveness of the rock. In order to allow the further extension of mechanical excavation beyond the limits of the presently available technology, the assistance of waterjet aiming at improving the performance of the equipment while reducing the wear rate of the tools, has been recognised as one of the most interesting technical solutions. The paper illustrates the improvement of the performance of both disk cutters and picks obtained with the waterjet assistance at the Waterjet Laboratory of the University of Cagliari on a medium-hard rock.

The current copper ore handling systems in use at Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 33 years old and have hoisted over 160 Mt at a rate of around 6 Mtpa. The mineÆs production profile is increasing in line with the optimum life of mine plan to over 6.6 Mtpa, which requires a system utilisation and reliability above that previously achieved. Copper ore is hoisted up the U62 shaft, which forms the central part of the U62 ore handling system. In theory this system can cope with the duty planned if the bottleneck is only the U62 winder. To achieve the planned production rate will require increased focus on reliability of each component in the ore handling system so that ore is available at the shaft for hoisting whenever the shaft is available, and the shaft is available for the maximum practical time. Increased availability will be achieved through the outcomes of the study of each component in the U62 system, and the internal ore handling systems that deliver ore from as far as 2 km laterally and 700 m vertically from the U62 shaft. The true capacity of each component is being determined and current performance is being measured with the aim of improving performance through root cause analysis and engineering out the causes of delays. The program began in March 2004 and this paper describes the progress achieved as of April 2005.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become.more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width- to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

WMC Resources Ltd has been involved the development and trialling of an automated load haul dump vehicle system since 1997. This paper describes the introduction of the system into the Olympic Dam Operation and its performance compared with existing manual loaders. In certain situations the autotram loader will outperform the manual operation, particularly on the longer distances. There were no personnel injuries associated with the operation of the system during the testing period.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. Caving is the lowest cost underground mining method, provided that drawpoint spacing, drawpoint size and ore handling facilities are designed to suit the caved material and that the drawpoint horizon can be maintained for the draw life. In the near future several open pit mines that produce in excess of 50 000 tons per day will have to examine the feasibility of converting to low cost, large scale underground operations. Several other large scale, low grade underground operations will experience major changes in their mining environments as large dropdowns are implemented. These changes demand a more realistic approach to mine planning than has occurred in the past, where existing operations have been projected to increased depths with little consideration of the change in mining environment that will occur. As economics force the consideration of underground mining of large, competent orebodies by low cost methods, the role of cave mining will have to be defined. In the past caving has generally been considered for rock masses that cave and fragment readily. The ability to define cavability and fragmentation, the availability of large, robust LHDs, a better understanding of draw control requirements, improved drilling equipment for secondary blasting and reliable cost data have shown that competent orebodies with coarse fragmentation can be exploited by cave mining at a much lower cost than with drill and blast Methods.

Two-dimensional (2D) estimation approaches have significant advantages over three-dimensional (3D) approaches when dealing with a narrow vein- or layer-like geometry. The main motivation for 2D estimation is that bias due to non-additivity of grade is avoided. The various aspects of 2D estimation are illustrated by use of a case study from the 1A Shoot Nickel deposit at Leinster, Western Australia. The width of the 1A mineralisation is variable, and so are the angles of drilling intersection. Consequently, the variable of interest (in this case nickel grade) is not suitable for direct kriging because it is defined on non-uniform support. However, grade can also be defined as the ratio of two variables that are suitable for direct kriging: thickness and accumulation. In the 2D approach, tonnage equates to thickness and metal equates to the product of grade and thickness, also called æaccumulationÆ. In the simplest approach we can independently krige accumulation and thickness and derive the grade by the ratio of the two resultant estimates. The thickness and accumulation variables must be in a consistent projection orientation, for example a horizontal projection in the case of steeply inclined mineralisation like 1A. Because the density is not constant across the 1A (and most other) deposits, the issue of density weighting is also discussed. The impact of the correlation between grade and length, or grade and density are important issues in implementation of 2D estimation. The circumstances under which these correlations need to be taken into account (by co-kriging) are reviewed. Finally some comments are made on the final use of the resultant 2D estimate for mine planning purposes.

In the Mesel sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit, the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration is controlled by steeply dipping faults and shallowly dipping lithologies. Hydrothermal alteration of carbonate rock is characterised by decalcification, dolomitisation and silicification. Intense argillic alteration occurs in a laccolithic andesite intrusion adjacent to decalcified and silicified carbonate units. Sulphide minerals (pyrite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite and cinnabar) accompany hydrothermal alteration and precious metal mineralisation. The trace elements Ag, As, Sb and Hg are zoned spatially throughout the deposit. Mesel contains a mineable gold reserve of 7.8 million tonnes at 7.3 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is preferentially localised in carbonate rocks adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion. The ore body consists of a central, near-vertical, high grade "feeder" system flanked by tabular, inward dipping, moderate grade "ouflow" zones. Mineralisation is controlled predominantly by two steeply dipping faults with high grade (>10 g/t) gold zones centred about structural intersections and fault splays. Unplanned dilution has the potential to seriously undermine the economic viability of a mine, and in some cases results in mine closure. The effect of stress damage on dilution has become increasingly relevant as mining depths increase. In the case of narrow vein mining, the incremental extraction of long-hole rings has the potential to result in a moving high stressed zone at the stope brow. This leads the hanging wall and footwall to experience a spike in the stress to strength ratios as the brow passes. In some cases, the stress to strength ratio may be high enough to result in fracturing or damage to the rock mass. The aim of the study described in this paper was to investigate whether stress damage results in a significant increase in dilution. The study involved analysis of overbreak from 410 case studies from the Kundana Gold mine in Western Australia. Site personnel had already undertaken calibration studies of the stress levels that result in rock mass damage. This calibration, in conjunction with numerical modelling showed that stress damaged stope walls at this mine had on average 50 per cent more overbreak than stope walls where stresses had not exceeded the damage criterion. For a design mining width of 1.5 metres, and with both walls impacted, this represents 36 per cent increase in dilution. After adjustment for possible sources of bias the difference reduced to an average 0.10 metres per stope wall, representing 13 per cent dilution for the mining width under consideration. The potential for stress damage related overbreak should therefore be considered as part of any assessment of narrow vein dilution.

BHP Minerals Ltd operates an open cut iron ore mining operation on Koolan Island, off the coast north of Derby in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The mine comprises a number of pits, the largest of which is situated adjacent to the coast on the southern side of the island. The lowest bench is currently at RL +2 m, and the mine has planned ultimate depth of RL -82 m. Mining has already extended below the pre-existing water table level, and below mean sea level. In 1984, an extensive program of drilling, geophysics and test pumping was instigated to evaluate the aquifer hydraulic properties and the nature of the groundwater flow regime. With the aid of computer modelling, predictions have been made of the likely dewatering and depressurization requirements, and a conceptual pumping and drainage system has been designed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

Palaeomagnetic work on the red beds of the Hervey Group from central N.S.W., and on the Mount Eclipse Sandstone from the Ngalia Basin, Central Australia, reveals a pre-deformational magnetization from the Hervey Group, which indicates a semi-equatorial palaeolatitude during the latest Devonian or earliest Carboniferous and a syn-deformational magnetization from the Mount Eclipse Sandstone which places Australia at a palaeolatitude of about 70¦ ¦ 20¦S during the early Late Carboniferous. By comparison with the existing data from Australia, the new results indicate that: (1) Australia (and thus eastern Gondwanaland) underwent a rapid southward movement of about 60¦ during the late Early and early Late Carboniferous, (2) the Lachlan Fold Belt has been part of cratonic Australia since at least latest Devonian or earliest Carboniferous, and (3) the New England region and cratonic Australia were at a similar palaeolatitude during earliest Carboniferous, but they may have undergone the rapid southward movement separately.

The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity Modelling Projects recently completed by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250 000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, which was to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with new companies acquiring new tenements and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were undertaken at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. HPD New Zealand Ltd recognised the value of the prospectivity modeling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process started by the projects. They recognised the need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting.

Microbial oxidation of refractory sulphide ores (particularly gold and copper ores) are well-established techniques that are increasingly employed because of their low capital and operating costs and environmental benefits. CSIRO has established a multidivisional project, the æBioMineral Processing InitiativeÆ, with the goal of generating new and improved high temperature micro-organisms for biological oxidation of these refractory ores. The project is currently focused on the discovery/generation of novel hyperthermophiles for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. As part of this project we are investigating the practicalities of genetic modification of iron/sulphur oxidising micro-organisms. The molecular biology of iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles is still in its infancy. This work is aimed at improving our knowledge of vectors, promoters, selectable markers, gene transfer and expression in these organisms. The Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans genome is currently available and genomics is proceeding at a rate where in the next few years we can expect at least one or two relevant microbial genomes to be sequenced each year. New genes that impart useful characteristics to iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles will be available from published genomes and the study of newly isolated hyperthermophiles. We need to be in a position to clone and express those genes. This paper will describe the isolation, transfer and expression of thiocyanate hydrolase genes in Escherichia coli and At. ferrooxidans. Most common antibiotics are not effective against iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles. Also, the use of antibiotics or their resistance markers outside of a laboratory setting would not be appropriate. Resistance to thiocyanate should be a useful selectable marker, without implications for human or animal health. Additionally, thiocyanate resistant iron/sulphur oxidising acidophiles might have application in gold bio-oxidation plants in arid areas where reuse of contaminated tailings water is desirable. The cloning of thiocyanate genes in broad host range plasmids under the control of E. coli and At. ferrooxidans promoters and the expression and phenotypic effects in both species will be described.

The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.

Past experience with fully bonded cable dowels placed as a means of reinforcement in highly stressed crop pillars at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine indicated such support was not fully effective. Typically overbreak of the crown occurred leaving long lengths of cables hanging from the back stripped of grout and rock with the potential load carrying capacity of the cables not having been fully utilised. This mode of behaviour had been observed in the cable dowelled crowns of three longhole open stopes (EROS) mined to the No. 12 level at NBHC. A system of support with improved mechanism of load transfer from rock to cable and capable of full utilisation of cable strength was proposed for the crown pillars of future Stopes.
